I don’t own a business, although I’ve wanted to, but one thing that’s bugged me about all this isn’t just about spreading the wealth.

It’s that he specifically said anyone making over $250,000.00. Didn’t he say before that he wouldn’t be raising taxes on people making that amount? I thought he said $4mil, but maybe I heard wrong.

And since when is $250K rich? It’s nice, but if you live somewhere like Los Angeles, or New York, or San Francisco, it doesn’t go far. Even here in Las Vegas, it’s comfortable, but it’s not rich.

several years ago i owned a small business with 7 employees. my first year i grossed $250,000.00. how much did i end up taking home? less than $20k. on what was i taxed? my gross. oh, sure, i had deductions and an adjusted gross, but still… the expenses were insane. listen, i had a business with something like the 2nd highest workers comp rate, my workers were skilled craftsman and rare so i had to pay them top wages. even though we did high-end, custom work, we were still located in a market where i could only get so much per job. every red cent i made, i paid taxes on someway, somehow. if i had that business today, the second obama was elected i’d be making plans to either start making personel cuts or unload it because i know my main clientele would be getting hit with tax increases as well.

people who work for someone else whether it’s a private sole proprietor, a corporation or the government is most likely never going to see $250k, and they don’t get how THEY will be impacted when their employers’ expenses go up. i remember how my employees who ended up making more than i, always grumbled about how rich i was – supposedly. there’s just a mindset with workers and they just don’t get it. and obama is taking advantage of that.

My brother is Joe the Plumber. He dropped out of high school and has worked since he was about 12. At around 16 he started working in a fast food restaurant, by 26 he was a manager, by 36 he was a supervisor of about a dozen, by 46 he became part owner of the franchise. If one of the Arugula crowd (coffee-shop commies) met him, they’d think that he was some stupid hick that was far beneath them and wouldn’t give him the time of day (they would have thought this when he was still in the ranks of the proletariat before he became a “rich capitalist”). Damn them all to hell because the ones I’ve known in my life (especially in academic circles) couldn’t jump high enough to kiss his ass and would need a step ladder to do the job.

Add to that Obama’s raising of the Capital ains Tax. We had a high Capital Gains Tax before and spending by my wealthier, but retired clients almost stopped. Yea, the had money, but it was tied up in investments they had made throughout their working life. I learned from them that they wanted to spend more and sell these investments, property, bonds, etc, but because they would pay almost half of the proceeds to the gov’t, they just sat on these investments and didn’t spend. As soon as those taxes were lowered in the Clinton years, I began to see them spend alot more money and they were very generous about it. That was an eye opener for me because although they seemed rich, they were cash poor.

I left out the most important part: for all his labor and risk he gets to keep about .39 of every dollar he makes. And for this, the far left hate him and want more.

Newsday devoted one full page yesterday on an “investigation” of Joe the plumber – particularly since they failed to do the same about Bill Ayers or Jeremiah Wright.

They used the AP story that deceived the reader that Joe had said that he made $250,000. That is a lie. What he said was that he was looking “to buy a company that made $270, $280.000″ – company being the key word.

They went on to have a sidebar by 2 Newsday reporters who surveyed individual plumbers Long Island what their salaries were in order to further the lie that were perpretrating.

What Newsday refuses to address IS the issue of what Obama’s response was: SHARE THE WEALTH. That is classic Socialism and why is the media ignoring something as dangerous as that? (that was a rhetorical question).

As previously stated there are countless small businesses that will be hurt by Obama’s tax plans and are similar to the one Joe is interested in.

I guess if you are brain washed into thinking that the world will end if you don’t get this guy elected you will do some crazy things. I am sure you have already read the paper.

People are all too ignorant. They don’t know anything about life cycle. Birth, childhood, adulthood and maturity. The economic cycle does regenerate but humans can only modify lightly theirs.

These problems with Obama’s plan versus the present state of the economy are complicated because things do not happen at speeds that are discernible. McCain tries to be honest, but honesty sounds silly. Obama builds a house of cards and that looks pretty.

Obama wants to change our country and change the world towards a government controlled government directed economy. In theory may sound good, I personally don’t really care, but that type of economy’s danger is the fact that works on one life cycle theory. That means that once it matures it leads to death. And the problem is that the death of a Gov Cont/Dir Econ is slow, last decades and sometimes centuries. Look at Africa. Essentially Obama wants us to enter into a cycle that would lead to a situation seen today in many countries of Africa where maturity has lead to centuries of death.

One life, one life cycle, the whole organism dies at once. It is contrary to nature. It is anti-futuristic. It means that the generation still unborn is confined to being born of a botched abortion and left to die in a basement laundry. Obama prescribes that type of economic death to a generation still unborn.

It is sad that people can’t see they are condemning our future and the future of the world.

Since the world will not stand for it, you are looking at another world war in order to prevent the U.S. from killing the rest of them. That will happen around 2035.

I have heard him say 150,000 before and 200,000 as well. He cannot keep up with his own lies promises. He won’t keep any of them anyway. Obama is talking about raising taxes on personal income. What I don’t understand is why a small business with an income of over $250,000 uses the personal income tax if this is actually business income. I always thought that business income was separate from the salary the owner pays himself. There would be deductions if that income is reinvested in the business or used to hire more people, raise salaries, improve health care, so no little or no taxes would be paid.
If the entire amount is taxed as the owner’s personal income, it seems that that is exactly what it is and it is the owner, not the business that is being taxed.

Can anyone explain this? The media certainly isn’t.

As for raising taxes on income over $250,000, that is what Bill Clinton did and it did not hurt the economy. On the other hand, Clinton did this as the economy was moving out of a recession. Now we are going in the opposite direction – quickly – so if taxes are raised on upper income people, it needs to be paired with money going out for things like extending unemployment benefits, food stamps, etc. that can be done quickly so that demand does not drop further.

Unfortunately nobody will lift a finger. Obama won’t even lift his eye brows. In an election year politicians will not deal with this. It is horrific that we even have the death penalty in this country.

Obama is true evil because he knowingly deceives many many people for his own personal benefit. He is like so many other true evil people that thrive on deception.

There are several ways to orgainize a small business. A sole propriator and even an LLC can use the Schedule C of the 1040 Individual Tax return to claim their business income. If the business is orgainized as a corporation that is a diffrent return.

Clinton’s good luck was a unique cycle that rode a wave of technological innovation. That cycle matured. We are in a very different cycle. We are in a sudden death cycle today caused by greed. It will take years and years to rid of the effect of stupid greed. Any one human being smarts place on the economy to direct it to a renewal has in probability sense almost zero chances, but lets give it 5 percent. Economies in these conditions need complete freedom of field in order to allow the potential of Sarah Palin ‘American ingenuity’ to come up with a healing balsam. Electig Obama will be like chanting ‘death to America.’

Thanks for the update. Yes, I would like to know why Obama has virtually imprisoned his grandmother and hides her from the press. In that brief glimpse of her in a photo greeting Obama at the elevator to her apartment in his recent visit to Hawaii, his handlers made sure that we did not get a view of her face. By that photo, however, it was clear that the lady could walk just fine and she was making a welcoming gesture that indicated she was in total charge of her faculties.

Also, in the Saddleback Forum, Obama indicated that his grandmother (besides his wife and dead mother) were the three people he would look to for advice if he faced a difficult decision. So, by his own admission, his grandmother is not senile. It will be quite interesting to see why he has hidden his own grandmother who he has used in a prop for his “Kansas” roots (what a joke).

We turn the TV away from him. I too cringe when I hear his voice or name. My 11 year old grandson is afraid of him. There is a reason some drink the koolaid and some are like us.

I know that I could never be hypnotized, a proven fact with me. I once lived in a town with a large cult following. The members all had a strange quality about their eyes. In my opinion they would kill anyone if their leader gave the word. In fact there were some unusual deaths in their compound from people (women) who had planned on leaving.

Sounds about the right percentage to me. If he would keep just maybe 2 to 3 percent more he would probably risk a little more sooner rather than later.

The press and journalist are different from entrepreneurs and labor. They are move always as a reaction of what other do. They are never moved from within (except writing books that are also directed by editors). And the press is always after ‘incentives.’

So the press cannot see anything different between what Barack speaks and their editors and bureau chiefs.

The thing that really bothers me most about this discussion of a small business owner making $250,000 is that it’s being discussed in the most ignorant terms by the elite media and Ivy League types, totally devoid of reality.

1) Most small business owners (whether they are plumbers, retail store owners, doctors or lawyers) have worked years for long hours to finally get where they are – sacrificing leisure time and time with their families, foregoing luxuries and extras to put money back into the business, save for the business, or pay off student loans and/or obtain expensive post graduate education.

2) When they reach that magic $250,000 figure (for couples) or $200,000 (singles), it may be after a decade or two of sacrifice. They will have old bills and unmet needs.

3) In a small business, $250,000 of income may occur on a sporadic basis, say one out of 3 or 4 years. Thus, when you do manage to have a great year, you will be penalized for it instead of maybe enjoying a little vacation from that 7-day a week obligation or putting something aside for retirement.

4)$250,000 nowadays for a family in many, many parts of this country is NOT RICH. After taxes, insurance, and some attempt to save for retirement or your kids’ college educations, you may actually have less than $100,000/year to spend in very expensive areas.

5)Based on the above, many small business owners will simply cut back rather than kill themselves to make over $250,000, just to give it to Barack Obama to redistribute to those who have not worked as hard (or younger folks working their way up, just as the business owner did), or they will pass extra costs on to clients/customers or raise prices so that their income does not go down in the face of rising taxes. Jobs will be lost and consumers will pay more for everything.

Just think Orwell’s 1984.

I work with small business owners in two indsutries where you begin small with much sacrifice and hopefully become successful at very high incomes.

When it comes to those early stages these businesses are no different than a small plumbing and construction business.

What greatly disturbs me is the wolf in sheeps clothing – Obama.

This man never ran a business and has spent his life learning socialism – getting mentored by various people who we know know – and becoming an apprentice in that field with his work in Chicago. He finally makes the mistake of revealing who he really is and the media completely ignore it.

McCain MUST hammer this message home for the balance of the campaign inspite of the attacks he will receive. This could have been Obama’s October surprise and he created it himself.

One last comment: Not only do most small business owners usually only reach those peak earning years after decades of hard work, those higher-income years can disappear in an instant due to forces totally outside of the business owner’s control, e.g., illness, disability, loss of a partner, changing business conditions, lawsuits, natural and man-made disasters – fire, flood, etc.

Under Obama’s socialistic plan, after paying all of those taxes, the ability to save for such a rainy day would be reduced, guaranteeing more people would end up dependent on President Government for handouts. The solution? Raise more taxes to support more people, I suppose.

MY wife and I mortgaged the house, ran up credit card debt and worked 18 to 20 hours a day, 7 days a week for 8 years to get our business going. Now, when it looks like we may finally start to get a return on our investment, Obama wants to institute his “trickle up theory of economics”. Start at the bottom and spread the poverty upward.

No way would we ever take that chance under Obama.

Even with media there is the incentive of “money.” The people that own these media companies are more interested in revenue than they are in ideology which would generally put the clamp on out-of-control journalists like we see now. So behind this there has to be money that forces these owners to look the other way allow wholesale propaganda to occupy their pages or airwaves. I alwasy wonder how far away is George Soros in all of this?

I think that is what I thought too as I watched a video of the plumber listening to Obama and wondered what it was I was seeing. For me it was like America was standing there, real America self contained and respectful,and just not buying it. An embodiment of the hard working “clingers”, which demonstrates just how offensive the description “clingers” was when referring to our hard working.

I can’t help but wonder if Obama knew something he had never encountered before was standing in front of him. After all his life living in the fog of black victimhood preached by Davies, Ayers, Alinsky, Wright, the wacko Plager, the sun finally comes out and he find himself standing in front of Joe America, and the only favor Joe wants is to be left alone to work hard and use his money himself. And in return Joe promises that besides working hard he will create a few new jobs, which will give a few others the chance to dream and work toward owning their own business.

I am amazed at the supreme arrogance of Obama yesterday as he ridiculed and mocked Joe the Plumber during one of his rallies. How insensitive, how foolish and how elitist! He simply cannot help himself if anyone makes him look the least bit foolish like Joe did, he must strike back and strike back hard. This is clearly a vindictive man who is immature and very insecure. A-rack shows no ability to put himself in the other person’s shoes and fully expects everyone to fit into the mold HE chooses. How in the world can he ever know the pain or hardship of the ordinary man or woman? It’s an impossible task for him. Should he become president, be prepared to fit into his world or else you’ll be laughed at, mocked and cast aside.

I would think that the experienced politicians in office now would be shuddering to hear the condescending comments. They would know to never mock the middle class, blue collar voter in Ohio!! We do have a business. What Barky doesn’t seem to understand is that we already pay quite a chunk in taxes. Since we’re a small business, making those tax payments has been hard. Nobody in their right mind would look at our tiny business and decide the best way to improve the economy is to raise our taxes. 250,000 as a wage is a small fortune. As a business, it puts you in the category of a mom and pop operation. You’re barely making it.

Many small businesses are set up as S corporations. It has something to do with not being taxed twice (I guess first tax is on business profit, then second is on that same profit when you you move it into your own acct). So personal income and business income are similar for a small business- the business is their job and akin to our salary. Under Obama, if they make more than 250k, I have read they will only bring in 39 cents on the dollar. So then, its not encouraged to work harder and make more because you end up making proportionately less.

Under Clinton, its true as you say, the economy was good. Now that the economy is bad, many economists say raising taxes will send us into a worse economy.

Also, I don’t know what all Bill taxed, but ccomparing O’s plan to Hillary’s, she was NOT going to increase capital gains, dividend, death, and social security taxes. She hammered O on that. He will increase all (or some combo, depending on which article you read on which day). Those are additional burdens, and the first two decrease investments, which is what we need right now. This is my understanding, sorry if I misrepresent anytihng.

I read this late into the night last night, and re-read it again this morning. Even though it’s long (67 pages total), it is prepared in a simple to understand way. I’d encourage you to read it, if you haven’t yet already.

The one piece I wish could’ve been made more clear, is what can be done to counteract the effects. Perhaps I’m missing it, and if so, I sure would appreciate hearing about it.

When they think of capital gains they think of fat-cat stock investors, but they don’t think of us 401k folks. When they think of 2nd homes, they think of another mansion, but they don’t think that maybe I’ve had a couple good years and I got me a little fishing cottage on the lake. This is quite a disconnect between us and these Lords of the Universe. We are incomprehensible to them, and so we are invisible to them.

I wish people who aren’t self-employed could understand just how much tax self-employed people are already paying.
For one example, FICA (social security). When you work for something else, your employer is splitting your tax with you. You only pay half, and your employer pays the other half. However, if you’re self-employed, then you pay the whole enchilada—15.9%, and there’s no getting around that FICA tax. If you have more than $400 in self-employment income, you have to pay it. For a few years, I had self-employment income of less than $6,000 per year and paid almost $1,500 in FICA taxes per year. Needless to say, it hurt my checkbook.
Now, imagine what self-employed people who employee other people have to pay. In addition to FICA and income taxes, there is also unemployment insurance that has to be paid to the state. (This is the money that out-of-work people draw from.) If a small business owner offers health insurance, usually that’s split with the employee, too.
It’s hard enough to get a small business off-the-ground and manage the taxes that are already coming off the top of the profits. I can’t imagine having to pay more.

Your basic message is SO true, EducatedWhiteWoman. Good years and bad years and some where you just scrape by. All the while, your few employees need you, and it feels like a huge responsibility. It’s like having 15 families instead of just your own to care and worry about.

When you think about it the wealth redistribution would be important to a Chicago thug because they need to get the money flowing through the government coffers so they can do their skimming game. That’s what they’re really up to.

And the subchapter S election for qualifying small business corporations flows corporate gross receipts and expense/depreciation charges through to the owner(s) so that it is as if the corporate structure does not exist at all.

This whole discussion is still very fuzzy, because I have not seen anything that specifies whether BO is talking about —

– gross receipts, including from businesses > $250K,

or

– total income (on personal tax return), which would just include net business profits, after deductions; depreciation > $250K,

or

– taxable income > $250K

And don’t forget, if BO increases the CG rate, he is really increasing the CL recognition rate too, which, when used with excess loss carrybacks by rich folk who had taxable CG in prior years, will generate instant tax refunds for those taxpayers — quick cash, and carrybacks can reach three years into the past.

There is no way for Obama to NOT raise taxes on people earning less the $250,000 and keep any of his spending programs. That means you are next for a tax increase. Please let us not forget Bush Sr. and “read my lips, no new taxes.” Among the first things he did was raise taxes. People have not learned from history if they vote for Obama and a Democratic majority. I fear they will make the Republican period of control look like the good old days.

I’m with you. I was forced to close my small paralegal temp. business this year after 15 years. All the law firms that had scheduled me for the current year, cancelled because they were/are experiencing a downturn in clients being unable to pay their attorney fees in a timely manner. So, outside assistants like me are not being contracted.

I experienced a slight downturn shortly after 9/11, but it was short-lived. Not this time.

Don’t forget Workers’ Compensation Fund that an employer has to pay on any employee.

I forgot to mention that I do not live in a large city nor even in a middle-sized city. I live in an area of my state that is largely rural. Wages are lower here than on the other side of the state but the cost of living is much higher. The majority of employers where I live are construction companies, and you all know how that classification of employer is taking a big hit.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t franchise businesses such as McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, etc. classified as small businesses? The individual franchise owner of these businesses will be hit real hard. There goes the price of a Big Mac!

Wow! I just read to about page 40 in this article, and it is well worth a read! It is so obvious! My gosh, this is beyond anything we have ever seen.
I always thought of myself as being quite suggestible, but when I would watch him, I would find myself asking “what is he actually saying? I don’t here anything here I can cognitively evaluate…” I thought it was my lack of finesse in postmodern speak. But, no, it is more than that. Your Joe the plumber cartoon has certainly sparked a lot of interesting and intelligent comments as well as some off the wall rants.

Both McCain and Obama have access to some pretty experienced and astute economic advisers. I think by not being very specific about how their plans will affect people in different economic circumstances, they both open the door to a lot of criticism. People view their respective plans through the prism of their own biases.

McCain says this is not a time to raise taxes on anybody. That should play well with everybody. But the queston remains as to how the country can get out of this economic mess unless taxes are raised on someone. I don’t think it is unreasonable that the big corporations should be expected to pay more taxes than they currently do. As for Obama’s plan, I don’t know if $250,000 is or isn’t a realistic cutoff for not paying more taxes. I sure wish I took home anywhere near $250,000. I wouldn’t mind paying a little more taxes if I did.

I do think both candidates need to flesh out their plans more and not talk in generalities. I wish they would expain how they are going to get us out of the economic mess we are in. Many of us who have stock investments have seen a big drop in our stock values.

Many people have had to sell their stocks at depressed values in order to just pay their bills. Many are walking away from their houses because their house is now worth less than their mortgage. Costs of food and medicine and health care are skyrocketing. It certainly sounds good to hear someone say let’s not raise taxes on anybody. Sounds great, but is it realistic?

No matter what promises the candidates make, they are unlikely to be able to keep them. This is partly why they remain vague about details. What actually will happen will depend upon the balance of power in the House and Senate. There will be endless hassles over budgets and budget cuts, earmarked funds, etc

So it seems to me, you pick your candidate, and you live with the results. And the results are unlikely to resemble anything you hope will happen.

Yes, if I still had my small business, I’d write in, too. I was appalled at how much of our income went to taxes. If it wasn’t for R&D deductions and related credits, some years it would have been very close to a 50-50 split between the company (me and all 2-3 of my employees), and the government.

I don’t have any family on whom to depend. My savings is my lifeline, and I’m still building it back up after the dot com and 2008 debacles. Higher taxes on me and higher prices = less income I can put into savings = greater chance I will need government handouts later to stay alive, which is very distasteful to me.

Well, there’s something more to be said about paying the FICA, etc. My (ex)husband and I started a small busness and after about the third year we were doing better than before….but….ONLY HE could pay into FICA….I didn’t exist except to work in the business full time. Several years later, we divorced and I got the business. It was after that time the law was changed and both married partners of a business could pay into FICA. So, now after we divorced and I retired, I could get more Social Security on the amount I paid in for the years that I worked than ANY that he paid for 30 years!…..he now gets several hundred dollars a month more from Social Security than I do….and only when he dies do I get to claim on “some” amount that he paid in…that doesn’t look too promising. I closed the business and worked another job for 10 years, and the “givernment” sez I’m below the poverty level. But I’m not worried yet…my house, car and everything are paid in full, and my credit card is paid every month…. My parents taught me how to survive on what you had to work with and not to buy what you couldn’t aford to pay. It’s working for me….!! Yes, I pay for my own supplemental health insurance! and I don’t know what I’d have done without it for the past couple of years.
