1) Research the firearms and self-defense regulations in your area and obey them to the letter;

2) Go to a reputable sporting goods/firearms dealer to purchase your weapon;

3) Follow that dealer’s advice (and also do some research) regarding the correct weapon (one that fits your person and needs) and ammunition to use;

4) Find a reputable firearms instructor or knowledgeable friend to teach you how to use your weapon safely and effectively;

5) If your state offers a CCW or CHL course, take it and get your license, even if you don’t actually intend to carry–this will save you all sorts of hassles;

6) Spend a lot of time on the range getting used to the weapon;

7) Consider joining the NRA to make use of its training and safety resources;

If you live in one of those sad locales that restrict this second-most Constitutional right to the point that it is null, campaign to change that.

The best home defense weapon is, IMHO, not always a handgun, but a pump shotgun loaded with #4 lead shot. Nothing deters a home invader like the sound of a shotgun pump being racked back–and I say this based on my personal experience with two home invaders who literally hurt themselves running away when they heard me do so. At close range, there’s not much that is more fear-inspiring than a shotgun blast.

Also, a solid shotgun slug or a high-caliber handgun or rifle round (except for Glazer safety rounds) can penetrate a sheet rock wall and wound someone on the other side, sometimes even after it has passed through your target. #4 shot will not do that, but it will get the job done on your target.

I believe in the Second Amendment right of all American citizens, I support it vigorously, and I exercise it regularly. I don’t want to discourage any responsible citizen from doing so, but please, don’t buy a gun unless you’re willing to accept the responsibility for learning how to use it responsibly and effectively and are ultimately willing to use it in self defense.

At least at this point this plan is better for America then Obama’s plan.

It was quite difficult at times being a Veteran at the DNC open thread. I remember yelling “troll” quite often to people that came in calling Vets heinous names. But found a way to over look it as most were decent to me most of the time. But there was a unanimous hatred for everything bush/cheney. Which surprises me NOW that they are forgiving POWELL (he was one of the most despised for quite some time)
