So Your Monday Isn’t Just About Anna Nicole

  • Josh Marshall answers the e-mails of “a few who seem to be asking, genuinely, what the big deal is” with the U.S. Attorney scandal. And TPM‘s David Kurtz nails why former U.S. Attorney John McKay was left off a list of nominees for an open federal district judgeship. Glenn Greenwald claims that “Congressional oversight is a linchpin of how our democracy works” (huh!), and bashes the pooh-poohing talking heads on The Chris Matthews Show.

  • Salon‘s dogged muckraker Mark Benjamin finds that “soldiers on crutches and canes were sent to a main desert camp used for Iraq training. Military experts say the Army was pumping up manpower statistics to show a brigade was battle ready.”

  • “GO BACK TO AFRICA AND DO YOUR GAY VOODOO LIMBO TANGO AND WANGO DANCE AND JUMP AROUND AND PRANCE AND RUN ALL OVER THE PLACE HALF NAKED THERE.” — U.S. Army recruiter Sgt. Marcia Ramode, using her military email address to respond to Jersey City resident Corey Andrew, after Ramode learned Andrew was gay. (ThinkProgress)

  • Steve Clemons concludes that Chuck Hagel, in his This Week interview yesterday, suggests that Bush could face impeachment if he ignores Congress on the Iraq war.

  • The LA Times has a doozie of a story: “Germany rattled by militant’s release” (Thirty-plus years ago, “Brigitte Mohnhaupt helped lead a terrorist gang whose assassinations of politicians and industrialists mesmerized postwar Germany.”)

P.S. This veterinarian’s article about cat nutrition rocked my world. (And if you have a dog, it’ll set you straight on “prescription” products like Science Diet.)

I sent it on to Ben who runs the excellent blog, Itchmo, that’s packed with all the latest info on the pet food recall scandal, as well as many fun, heart-warming stories and photos of dogs. Ben then wrote this: “What Should You Feed Your Cat?

Here’s what Keith is going to talk about tonight:

The White House stood by Alberto Gonzales on Monday, even as support for the embattled attorney general erodes on Capitol Hill amid new questions about his honesty. Three key Republican senators sharply questioned his truthfulness over the firings last fall of eight federal prosecutors. Two more Democrats on Sunday joined the list of lawmakers calling for Gonzales’ ouster. Several Republicans also urged President Bush to allow sworn testimony from his top aides about their role in dismissing the U.S. attorneys _ a standoff threatening to result in Capitol Hill subpoenas of White House officials. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17783788/

    Susan,

Don’t happen to have the canine equivalent of those last two links, do you?

  • http://noquarter.typepad.com SusanUnPC

No, but let me ask Ben at Itchmo. I’ll ask Ben to get back to us on that. His site is primarily for dog lovers.

And — this is important — Ben is collecting all of the anecdotal reports of pet owners whose cats and dogs have had serious and/or deadly problems with DRY food. Ben says he’ll report on that on Wednesday.

There’ve been many reports I’ve read, in newspapers and in blogs, of cats and dogs who suddenly stopped eating their dry food and/or who got very sick. I’m very suspicious that, given the big corporate nature of pet food manufacturing, there are common ingredients in most of the supermarket and some high-end pet foods that may be causing the deaths. See, the FDA et al. still aren’t sure that the “rat poison” came from the wheat gluten imported from China. The exact origin is still an open question.

That’s why I went to a local pet food-only store this weekend and got the meat-only wet food for my cats. It doesn’t cost that much more. I got a 5.5 oz. can of Innova meat-only wet food for $1.29. My two cats love it, and it lasts two days.

I also got Wellness all-meat wet food. Wellness makes food for dogs too. Both Innova (Evo) and Wellness are highly recommended.

Also got a $2 large sample bag of a new Canadian food, Orijen, that’s 75% meat … and because I’m on a budget, I’m mixing that with the wet.

Still, the info in that veterinarian’s article about the c-r-a-p in Science Diet and other such foods is pertinent for dog owners.

Add me to the list of sick dogs with Nutra dry.

I’m so sorry, Sometimes. Is your dog recovering? What did the veterinarian say? Is he getting intravenous fluids?

    Please report your experience here:

    March 26th, 2007
We will continue to gather reports of dry food related illnesses until Tuesday at 5pm Pacific time (8pm Eastern). Not 100% sure of the cause yet. Rather severe liver behavior, which wouldn’t necessarily mean a connection to me except the other dog got ill at the same time (though he shows no signs of the same liver troubles).

Once we get the ultrasound of the female’s liver and more information from the vet, I’ll contact them.

  • http://noquarter.typepad.com SusanUnPC

Keep me posted too. Post here or e-mail me. I’m SO sorry you’re going through this. And your poor dogs :( They’re lucky you’re such a caring owner. I just hope their livers can heal from this blow. You’ll probably have to get follow-ups to make sure. What a big worry for you.

I suppose you’ll want to keep the bag of food, just in case. And you’ll also want to report it to the FDA, which is linked here:

Btw, we used to give our cats Nutro. Then our cats refused to eat it. I think it’s not as good as it used to be … like Iams, which went downhill after Proctor & Gamble bought it.

    A Special Comment tonight…

    The inspiration?

Tom DeLay’s new book… part of which reads, “…liberals have finally joined the ranks of scoundrels like Hitler.”

Of course, DeLay didn’t stop there.

    Neither does Keith.

WEBB AIDE BUSTED FOR ILLEGAL, LOADED WEAPON

Fair-minded people of both the Left and the Right today were calling for an aide to Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) to be prosecuted “to the full extent of the law” for his flagrant violation of firearms laws. The aide, identified as Phillip Thompson, was arrested by capitol police for carrying an unregistered, illegal loaded pistol and two magazines of unregistered, illegal ammunition onto the capitol grounds. Webb’s office immediately adopted an evasive, bunker-mentality stance regarding the scandal, saying only that the aide was a “trusted friend” and a former marine. Thompson apparently claims to have “forgotten” that he was carrying the illegal piece.

Critics observed that Thompson might well be the first former US Marine in the 232-year history of the Corps to have forgotten that he was in possession of a loaded firearm, let alone one that flagrantly violated the nation’s laws.

While all right-thinking people agree that this crime must be vigorously prosecuted, it should be noted that, to the extent that the scofflaw’s acts involve federal crimes, he is eligible to be pardoned by President Bush, just as I. Lewis Libby is. As legal scholars have noted, the law forbids both rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges. As one legal expert observed, the fact that Thompson and Libby stand as equals before the bar of justice is a tribute to the wisdom of our Founding Fathers.

The seemingly deranged Senator Webb could not be reached for comment.

Zorro, it ws Webbs’ gun. His aide had dropped him at the airport and Webb gave it to him since he couldn’t carry it into aiport.

    Name three.

Zorro: the “legal scholars” in question would be Anatole France who quipped that “…the law, in its majestic equality forbids the rich as well as the poor to steal bread and sleep under bridges…”

    [sigh] Okay: two. Name two.

  • Chris Vosburg

Michel, I’m afraid you’re going to have to explain it to him. Wingnuts do not understand irony.
