Barack Obama’s Adventures in Egypt’s Wonderland

* Bumped Up *

Who knew? Lewis Carroll is still alive but is now writing his marvelous works of fantasy for Barack Obama rather than waste any more literary effort on young Alice Liddell. Who better than Carroll, who pioneered the art of literary nonsense in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, to launch a new genre for Barack Obama–political nonsense?

So we have the cable channels and the internet, not to mention Twitter, all a flutter over the euphoria and joy of the dawn of democracy in Egypt. Hell, this foolishness is not confined only to Democrats or to Barack Obama, I heard a clip of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham getting all teary eyed over the wonder of the dawn of political life in Egypt. Only thing lacking was the Mormon Tabernacle Choir belting out Handel’s Hallelujah chorus.

We are now officially in upside down land. Lewis Carroll’s Alice would feel quite at home with the bizarre logic now being spouted by leading politicians and pundits. You see? The Egyptian military has dissolved the Egyptians Parliament, voided the Egyptian Constitution and declared itself in charge for the next six months (at least). Now if that ain’t frigging DEMOCRACY in action I don’t know what is.

According to the New York Times:

The statement by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, read on television, effectively put Egypt under direct military authority, thrusting the country into territory uncharted since republican Egypt was founded in 1952. Though enjoying popular support, the military must now cope with the formidable task of negotiating a post-revolutionary landscape still basking in the glow of Mr. Mubarak’s fall but beset by demands to improve Egyptians’ many hardships.

Since seizing power from Mr. Mubarak on Friday, the military has struck a reassuring note, responding in words and actions to the platform articulated by hundreds of thousands in Tahrir Square. But beyond more protests, there is almost no check on the sweep of military rule. Its statement said it would form a committee to draft constitutional amendments — pointedly keeping it in its hands, not the opposition’s — though it promised to put them before a referendum.

While opposition leaders welcomed the moves, some have quietly raised worries about the future role of an institution that has been a pillar of status quo in Egypt, playing a crucial behind-the-scenes role in preserving its vast business interests and political capital.

Once upon a time this kind of act would have been called a military coup. Didn’t matter whether it was benign or malicious–if the military suspended normal law and procedure and put itself in charge then the resulting rule of government was commonly referred to as a Military Government. But not in Barack Obama’s new fantasy world of political nonsense. Nope! This is democracy in action. The people have spoken and we should celebrate.

So let’s extend this logic to Iran. Let’s say a million Iranian’s take to the streets demanding change. Let’s say that poor Ahmadhinejad, who is a weak example of a Mubarak type figure, resigns and flees to a resort on the ocean. Let’s say the Revolutionary Guard suspends Iran’s legislature, suspends the constitution and promises (double pinky swear) to hold elections in six months. That is democracy in action?

The silliness surrounding the reaction in the West, especially in the United States, to the political drama unfolding in Egypt is staggering. Self-delusion is a symptom of mental illness. Pretending that Egypt is embracing democracy because the military has taken power is the kind of insanity and bizarre logic that was the hallmark of the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll’s underground fantasy. My biggest problem is that Barack Obama and Lindsey Graham are not children. But goddamn!! They sure are thinking and reacting like children enthralled by a wonderful story of fantasy without appreciating that they are part of an historical event that is likely to shift the Middle East in the direction of Islamic extremism. There is nothing entertaining about that.

It fits the progressive obot narrative that obama brought “democracy” to Cairo. All he had to do was flap his gums and wait about one year. Poof. Democracy. Now please direct your attention to Lady Gaga who will be performing on Stage 1.

As as aside I really hate Egypt. Its the only place I have ever completely lost it and yelled at a hotel employee – Egyptians are quite often lazy and entitled – and this punk was no exception. Their country hasn’t progressed at all to my eye since 1972 – the first time I went there as a kid. It literally has not changed.
99% of Egyptians suck at the teat and expect the government to provide everything. Rant off.

For us in the West we are probably better off with the military running the place than to have them all voting. Unless of course the military has gone Islamic. Then it really doesnt matter.

  • SeriouslyStrongWoman

    Mr. Larry,
IMHO, THIS statement is still true and DID in fact happen for the MB CULT!!

Once upon a time this kind of act would have been called a military coup.

I do not live in Fantasy Land which is the WHOLE LIFE OF babyO, a made up FAIRY TALE (Bill Clinton Quote)!  I never believed a single word of any speech and from his books, the church audio and the mystery around this manchild. I am left with the conclusion that someone somewhere made a past and history up to present this manchild to the world stage and put him in power for an agenda that is sure to rip America apart and has. For example, WHY so many Social Security Numbers issued for babyO? I am not a member of the babyO Pep Rally Cheerleading Squad, even when he does something right, I question his motives bc I know somehow he is getting something for it.  These politicians are unbearable and slapping each other on the backs and on a personal note, which I never like to say things about a person on a personal attack, but did Lindsey Graham have his Adam’s apple cord cut, his voice makes me crazy, sorry, no offense, LOL!  Thank you, Mr. Larry for your input!!  I closed my good eye over the GD word, haha!

Egypt’s Military Leaders Dissolve Parliament, Suspend Constitution

    ———————–
Now, How you demand DEMOCRACY AND THROW OUT YOUR OWN CONSTITUTION???  Well, like I said, someone did not educate the people of Egypt with the two words REPUBLIC and DEMOCRACY if this is the outcome?  Who wants to bet the new GOVERNMENT is stacked with MB members hiding under another agenda.  UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE!!!

Mr. Larry, A COUP now proven, IMHO!! You are so SMART and WISE my favorite ex CIA man!!!

  • AbigailAdams

A long, long, long time ago, back in 2008, I once described Obama as everyone’s seriously crazy uncle (or sister, aunt, cousin, etc.) who spoils all the family get togethers with their odd mutterings or outbursts.  And there is a part of them, if you’ve ever been around someone who is certifiable, that is so utterly compelling you can doubt your own grip on reality momentarily.  I don’t know what causes this effect on people.  Just what in the world is it that’s got the media and so many of the U.S. policy makers and legislators nodding their heads in mute assent with Obama?  It’s totally creeping me out.  It’s like a giant Heaven’s Gate cult or something.

  • stodghie

i have heard that mubarak was quite ill and perhaps even with a limited time to live. now the military didn’t want his son in power as i have read in articles too. and the military doesn’t want the muslim brotherhood. that is like holding up a cross in front ov a vampire to them. same reaction at least in my view.

dissolving parliament doesn’t say elections in september to me. now if mubark had stayed with the understanding that we would work with him toward elections, then euporiah might at least be somewhat warranted.

we were lied to in 2008 and our pathetic media is still lying. we had better learn to separate reality from fantasy. i think about the lies told in pravda and in pre second war 2 in germany and i am filled with deep concern at the stupidity and downright villany of those who know better.

  • seattlegonz

Right on Larry. It’s like all the politicians and all the news outlets are conspiring to gaslight the American people. And, I’m worried. As long as the media can get talking heads from both parties to go on the news and make it appear that there isn’t a living soul in the US who thinks the only difference between now and before now was that there used to be a commander in charge of the military. Someone nations could talk to. Now, there’s no one but the guy with the biggest gun in charge.

Anyway, the media suppresses opinions that challenge the Obama line, and only brings out those that make it look like all politicians believe this is wonderful, in fact the world does.

Hillary has been muffled, and we haven’t seen her since she called for a calm and reasoned transition. She’s only the sec of state. I didn’t hear too much any dissenting opinions coming out of CPAC except from the cpacers.

Obama is in charge of the military. That’s to keep the military from being in charge of him. Nations are designed so those with the weaponry don’t get to call the shots without checks and balances. That’s all over for Egypt. Let’s come right out and declare that there’s no constitution, no leadership, no parliament…nothing but guys with guns.

Hey, smells like democracy to me!

The media are calling THIS a win for Obama. Let`s see what they say when it all falls to crap.

Egypt’s New Military Rulers To Ban Union Meetings

CAIRO  – Egypt’s new military rulers will issue a warning on Sunday against anyone who creates “chaos and disorder”, an army source said.
The Higher Military Council will also ban meetings by labour unions or professional syndicates, effectively forbidding strikes, and tell all Egyptians to get back to work after the unrest that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Yes.  We have gone Through the Looking Glass, and our leaders are morons.  Isn’t it amazing how Obama has cleaned up the mess in the desert!

    The POTUS and the Senator
    Were walking close at hand;
They wept like anything to see
    Such quantities of sand:
“If this were only cleared away,”
They said, “it would be grand!”

“If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose,” the POTUS said,
“That they could get it clear?”
“Yes, they can!” said the Senator,
    And yelled a hearty cheer.

I’ve refrained from commenting for a while because this whole ME situation is just too darned frightening.

I do believe that when all is said and done, we will all remember W as the one who lied to us about WMBs in Iraq and O as the one who lied to us about how benign and “moderate” the MB is.

Sadly, in both cases the damage will be too great for anyone for feeling pride in being right about it all–

I read they disbanded the parliament and cancelled the Constitution. Not sure what that means.

Happy Valentine’s Day? Mass Protests Planned For Iran on February 14

We’ve reported here before that the Iranian government is taking credit for supporting and inspiring the uprisings taking place in Tunisia and Egypt. Now here’s an interesting development:  opposition forces in Iran are planning demonstrations in Tehran to show their support for protesters in Tunisia and Egypt. They are planned for February 14.  How will the government respond?  Police officials have already announced that they will “act harshly” if they join the planned demonstrations.

Out of all of these sudden calls for Democracy in the Middle East. I have true hopes for only ONE! Yemen…I had the good fortune of actually visiting Yemen while I was in the Navy. The first US warship to dock there in over 30 years at the time. And I was lucky enough to meet some of the citizens. Not politicians or dignitaries, but ordinary people. I learned that the people of Yemen actually liked the people of the US, but hated our politicians. I can certainly understand that sentiment! As a Yemeni soldier I stood security watch on the pier with told me. Too many US politicians gave aid to tyrants and dictators in the middle east, simply as a means to offset the other tyrants and dictators being supported by the USSR at the time. And he had a very valid point. Anyhow, as I was saying, I do have some hope for Yemen.

Other Mid East countries that are now beginning to call for the changes…Not so much. For instance, during two six months Persian Gulf cruises, we stopped in Bahrain many times. And I truly believe that country will go the direction of Muslim extremism. The people, were not interested in talking to us, they tried their best in fact to ignore us completely unless it was involving business. They welcomed our money not our people. To me, that has always been a red flag in dealing with anyone.

I felt the very same way this morning watching all the Sunday talk shows. Both liberals and conservatives had all this happy-talk about what had transpired in Egypt.

Isn’t it amazing that when the military got what it wanted everyone started dispersing and going home at once.

Now you have the “brave” Obama administration suddenly (and very belatedely) challenging the Iranian mullahs to let their people protest.

Some have regarded the Obama foreign policy as weak and misguided, others have characterized it as a Whac-A-Mole foreign policy. I believe that Obama and his senior foreign policy advisors want to see a Middle east ruled by Islamic theocracy and would like nothing more than to see Israel gone.

  • Rabble Rouser Rev. Amy

Jim, I swear, every time you use that expression, I cannot help but think of Jeremiah Wright and his infamous sermon.  Oh, my.

Larry – you are spot on.  I was shocked when a friend, a retired Naval officer, no less, was all hope-y, change-y abt this “democracy.” When I pointed out this was a military coup, his response was nada, zip, nothing.  They don’t want to hear it.  Hell, even liberal commentator/former Clintonite Kirsten Powers said this was a military coup. She added that people really needed to educate themselves on the Muslim Brotherhood and for what they really stand, not this claptrap from Clapper.

But the Kool Aide is free flowing, and breaking through that haze just seems a daunting task.  Thank you for your continued efforts to bring some sanity to this situation.

  • TeakWoodKite

Larry, having much misguided experience in the Land of Alice, in my youth, this shit is well beyond any semblence of even that world of The majick bus…..

Nope, we are on to a Brave New World at warp seed.

“Human beings act in a great variety of irrational ways, but all of them seem to be capable, if given a fair chance, of making a reasonable choice in the light of available evidence. Democratic institutions can be made to work only if all concerned do their best to impart knowledge and to encourage rationality. But today, in the world’s most powerful democracy, the politicians and the propagandists prefer to make nonsense of democratic procedures by appealing almost exclusively to the ignorance and irrationality of the electors.”
Aldous Huxley (Brave New World Revisited)

On the side of the NQ page, is this tweet from Fox…..

“says there’s something in the soul that cries out for freedom — and those are the cries heard in Tahrir Square today”. BO said.

Only an Unhinged man child who has gone of the rails would willing endanger our national security over some “well orginized” poor buggers in a square halfway around the world.

Obama is a clear and present danger and should be relieved of his duties under the 25th amendment.

Gird your loins. They are becoming more and more obvious.

An American jihadist who set up the terrorist training camp where the leader of the 2005 London suicide bombers learned how to manufacture explosives, has been quietly released after serving only four and a half years of a possible 70-year sentence, a Guardian investigation has learned.

The unreported sentencing of Mohammed Junaid Babar to “time served” because of what a New York judge described as “exceptional co-operation” that began even before his arrest has raised questions over whether Babar was a US informer at the time he was helping to train the ringleader of the 7 July tube and bus bombings.

“Islamist-Supporters Infiltrate Obama Admin to Subvert US Security”Islamist-allied operatives appointed by Obama are undermining U.S. security policy – explains counter-Intelligence expert, Prof. Clare Lopez. Aimed at co-opting Americas foreign policy in the Middle East, a network including well-known American diplomats, congressional representatives, figures from academia and the think tank world – with ties to the clerical regime in Tehran – is directing the Obama Administration’s policy towards the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Middle East.Clapper on… Clapper off.

The first article I’ve ever seen, or heard that puts forth what Mubarak was doing. And, it says that the fighting that took place in Tahrir square was because the protestors saw that there was a large contigent of pro-mubarak sympathizers coming out, wanting to support Mubarak and the money men behind the protestors hired thugs to come out and destroy the Mubarak sympathizers.

The protestors are responsible for the violence.

  • Danforth

That’s a very informative article, seattlegonz, but I think it is saying that this faction within Murbarek’s party sent in the violent thugs to try to crush the protesters:

“The internal divisions deepened when a bloc of wealthy businessmen shut out the party intelligentsia and set about grooming Mubarak’s son Gamal for succession in order to protect their interests.”

They seemed to want to hijack the party to set up a corporate facist state.  That’s probably why a junta government looks good right now to the average people in Egypt.

I agree with Larry, though, that there is no reason for elation.  A lot of people think corporate interests are taking over both major parties in this country, too, so who knows what is ahead for anyone?

  • Agent X

Yes indeed…. The bull has wings. I was listening to Beyond the Beltway last night. DuMont had the three Muslim guests, one I believe was , Mahmoud Cherif Bassiouni of DePaul Law. ( My apologies I tuned in late and did not get the names). A rep from CAIR was one of the other guests, and another academic who was born in Baghdad. To hear these academics talk ( hopefully DuMont will post the evenings Podcast, stay tuned) you would think that the Muslim Brotherhood was the Middle East version of the Rotarian’s. According to CAIR there was 10 million Egyptians protesting all over the country. I think it was Bassiouni, who compared the Egyptian event to the American Revolution saying, that the people of Egypt have the same beliefs and desires as our Founding Fathers. Really? The panel was being challenged by a couple of callers but the guests were doing the Middle East shuffle and blowing smoke. 10 Million protesting on the streets and throughout Egypt? The last call-in started pounding and pressing the group and especially where CAIR got those numbers from? The caller seemed to have some knowledge. He was told to stop watching the TV and get his information for alternative sources, then abruptly disengaged. His statement of, you do not overthrow a government without a plan, and his questions of, so what is the plan (which he repeated a few times)? Was never answered.

Bruce DuMont needs to get other opposing and realistic analysis from people who understand the Middle East as well. Otherwise he (DuMont) is doing a disservice to his audience and propelling propaganda.

They didn’t throw out their constitution, they suspended it, big difference. The military don’t want an Islamist government in Egypt any more than we do. Taking over the government was the only sure way to prevent an Islamist government run by the Muslim Brotherhood. To do that, they had to suspend the constitution which calls for elections shortly after Mubarak stepped down. If held now, the elections would be co-opted by the Muslim Brotherhood and they would end up running the country. The MB is interested in jihad and keeping things stirred up in the Middle East. The Egyptian military isn’t interested in anything more than stability and control in Egypt. Which, interestingly, is what Egypt needs right now. I, for one, am glad they took over, the alternative was frightening, much more so than the military being in charge.

  • Sassy

No one actually knows the ramifications of the events in Egypt. There is the conundrum of accepting a ride on the crocodile’s back.
First, democrats and the BBP ( BO’s Bootlicking Press) must portray this as a victory, especially since they are addressing the Arab street.
Secondly, republicans who supported deposing Saddam cannot go weak-kneed now.
I would not stake my money, or my life, on a smooth transition to tranquility in the Middle East, but the dastardly deed is done in Egypt and now comes the waiting game.

    A Clue:

“What did people use before toilet paper? Well, just use your imagination: grass, leaves, fur, mussell shells, corncobs, stinging nettles… okay, maybe not that last, at least not more than once. The ancient Greeks used stones and pieces of clay; ancient Romans used sponges on the ends of sticks, kept in jugs filled with salty water. Mideasterners commonly used the left hand, which is supposedly still considered unclean in the Arabian region.”

Maybe this is where the expression originated: Never let your right hand know what your left hand is doing . . .

I hope that this story gets some strong traction in the UK — especially on the heels of Cameron, Merkel and Sarkozy’s recent announcements about the multi-culti failure.  If it’s happening in the UK, you know it’s happening in the U.S.

    Hi, Danforth,

It was this passage I was referring to:

Emboldened by Mubarak’s defiant speech, his supporters took to the streets the next day for the first time since the uprising began. However, Abdellah said, groups of paid thugs overtook the legitimate pro-Mubarak demonstrations, in a move he thinks was orchestrated by millionaire legislators and elements of the security forces.

“When those people saw there was some real sympathy for Mubarak, they thought, ‘It’s now or never, let’s clean out Tahrir,’” Abdellah said. “And that was a crime. It was the stupidity of those who believe they can defend a regime while killing it.”

The battle for Tahrir Square lasted all night. The protesters prevailed, but suffered heavy casualties: at least three people were killed and more than 1,500 injured, according to news reports.

Another excellent and fair analysis by Larry Johnson. Thank you for these amazing posts.  I don’t understand why so many people on both the left, right and in the middle are all gaga over what is happening in Eygpt.  It reminds me of how everyone was so enthralled by Obama before he was elected. Are we that defeated and unaware as a people that we can no longer look at things objectively and for what they truly are? Apparently so. It seems to me, people already know the answer they are looking for, and then stick to the one story they read on the internet, or the story they hear from a certain commentator to validate their wishful thinking. I can’t imagine that the transition from the old government in Eypgt to any new type of gov. will be easy and smooth.

You know Abigail; these stories do have traction in the UK. The fact David Cameron, has just recently come out with these announcements, are what the regular British people have been voicing their concern on for years. We know how that goes; it seems to fall on deaf ears!  As we are all well aware “No One” listens… if it brings in the votes for the local Labour councils right up to parliament they went along, allowing these minorities to chip away at the very fabric of the country, to change the landscape drastically simply to garner votes and get voted in! I don’t profess to be a political scholar by any means but a little history going back to Enoch Powell, a conservative MP MBE (16 June 1912 – 8 February 1998) who was classed as a loud mouth of his time voiced these VERY concerns as we find ourselves in today.
During the 1964 general election Powell said in his election address that “in my opinion it was essential, for the sake not only of our own people but of the immigrants themselves, to introduce control over the numbers allowed in. I am convinced that strict control must continue if we are to avoid the evils of a “color/multi-culti question” in this country, for ourselves and for our children”.[53] Norman Fowler, then a reporter for The Times, interviewed Powell during the election and asked him what the biggest issue was: “I expected to be told something about the cost of living but not a bit of it. “Immigration,” replied Enoch. I duly phoned in my piece but it was never used. After all, who in 1964 had ever heard of a former Conservative cabinet minister thinking that immigration was an important political issue?”[53] Enoch Powell

What I do know is how the immigration has had a huge effect on the inner cities, (and is now creeping into the village way of life) which has had a huge impact on employment, housing, and schooling, even down to the meat offered in schools….. The list goes on… within the UK, it is not good and I know many here simply think it will never happen here in such numbers….. It really is time to wake up and WAKE up now.

Helenk, thanks for thinking of me. I saw this article from the NY Times abt this issue, too. Why the crackdown? Well, you don’t want to upset the Taliban, do you? I know the US doesn’t, since we want to work with them – under Obama, that is. Anyway, check out this paragraph from the above article: While some are hopeful that the government may soften the provisions before final approval, women’s advocates see the effort as an example of government pandering to religious and social conservatives as President Hamid Karzai’s administration starts reconciliation efforts with insurgents.

Yeah, that’s right. Besides. they are only women, after all. Grrr.

OMG Samb–now that is a classic video segment.  First of all, I could not believe the title of the cover story in Newsweek, of all places:

“Egypt: How Obama Blew It.” written by distinguished professor Niall Ferguson of Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, and elsewhere . . .

Mika: “I want to hear more about how you think he blew it with Egypt because, uh, looking at all the different reports coming in and the pictures and the peacefulness on the streets of Cairo, so far so good, it seems like it actually went pretty damn well . . . ”

Niall: “Well, You could be for thinking that, but . . . “  And then he goes on to tear her cozy assumptions apart . . .

    Great find, Samb.

But not in Barack Obama’s new fantasy world of political nonsense. Nope! This is democracy in action. The people have spoken and we should celebrate.
    ====================
Indeed. That One is turning this world upside down and inside out with his drivel posing as intelligent discourse. Our country needs this psychopath like we need another war. Is there a pyschiatist in the WH?

  • Ferd Not-My-Site-(click to edit) Berfle

I’m really angry at the Repubs for going extreme to the point that Obama was seen as an acceptable alternative.  Who will be the next pendulum swing after Obama?  That gives me pause.
    =================
This happens because of the hard left and hard right and their reactionary, emotional responses to situations that are better resolved analytically. If the adults in this country would finally stand up and put their foot down, this wildly-singing political pendulum might be stopped.

Sorry I didn’t see this for a couple of days, seattlegonz.  Things are even more confusing in Cairo by now.  I just read about the CNN reporter who was first roughed up by regime forces and now has been sent home to a hospital after she was attacked by a mob in the streets.

Also I just saw a report that Iran has a warship by the Suez Canal.  So the same factors that drew average people into the revoltion, (food and oil prices), are being intensified.  (Oil over $100 now.)
