Patriot Room: McCain and Obama Nearly Even in Polls, Obama’s Fundraising Is Dropping “Like a Stone”

Hey, I could paraphrase the Patriot Room’s report, but why should I? They do it perfectly (and h/t to Bud White for sending me the link):

Shocker: Obama Fundraising Drops Like a Stone – Campaign Cash Essentially Even

From ABC.

Barack Obama and John McCain enter the final days of the presidential campaign amid dwindling reserves, with Obama hindered by a sudden drop in fundraising and McCain restrained by spending limits.

As Larry Johnson has noted, the Obama campaign and supporters may be celebrating just a little bit toooooooo soon. So confident are they, that they’ve put their credit cards away. (But don’t tell THEM that.) Heh. Read on:

Obama, the Democratic nominee, spent more than $105 million during the first two weeks of October, according to new campaign finance reports. He reported raising only $36 million for his campaign during that period, about half the fundraising pace he enjoyed in September.

The Illinois senator shattered records and dumbfounded Republicans and Democrats by raising $150 million in September. Obama could still do better in October. His more recent report showed he had taken no share from a joint Obama-Democratic Party victory fund that raised about $27 million during the same October period.

But with the election 11 days away, both Obama and McCain, the Republican nominee, are operating with diminishing funds.

And how much is that? You have to look at the numbers because ABC won’t do a side-by-side or any analysis of what it means. Fortunately, that’s where we come in.

Obama had nearly $66 million in the bank at the end of the two week period and debts of about $2.3 million. The Democratic National Committee and the joint victory fund reported combined cash on hand of $31 million.

McCain and the Republican National Committee reported having a combined $84 million as of last week to spend before Election Day.

That’s $94.7 million for Obama and $84 million for Mac. And look at Obama’s staggering burn rate. he spent $105 million in two weeks. McCain got less than that in matching funds for the entire general election. If you figure that throughout this campaign Obama had to outspend Hillary by margins of 2:1, 3:1, or 4:1, and still didn’t win a lot of states, who has the real problem here?

Visit Patriot Room, and give them some clicks for writing a great report.

AND (!) stay tuned for a hot story tonight on Obama’s slippery campaign fundraising methods. You will not want to miss it.

Well what the hell did everybody expect. Oil has dropped on the stock market like a rock too. Sort of cuts into the Obama contributions from the Middle East.

  • Honora

I wonder if the fundraising drop is do to the pressure on the Obama committee to check credit card info. They have been utilizing a ‘loophole’ and driving a tractor trailer through it. PUMA

  • Mandelay

Great story, Susan, thanks! This explains the “he needs $10 more from each of us” story in the LA Times. It also shows how willing Americans are to believe “things as advertised,” providing there’s an avalanche of advertising. And with all the money he’s spent, the audience still doesn’t know who the bum really is.

  • Steve in KC

I am confident the BO voters are over-confident. In fact, I am COUNTING on their complacency. I suspect many will be partying and celebrating instead of voting, because they are so sure BO will win, they know he doesn’t need for them to get sober motivated to go vote.

Voting is too much like responsibility. I’m counting on the youth voters being a no-show low turnout, as usual. It’s all old news by now. The thrill is gone.

  • Typewriterstreaming

Oh Oprah – time for you to transfer funds back and forth again…

  • Shiloh

Lots of factors at work. The seriousness that comes over voters as an election gets near, the bad sampling in polls, the Bradley/Obama effect, the PUMAs of course, the mystery around Obama which was once intriguing is now scary, and not in the least the Reagan democrats are abandoning Obama.

    O stands for over

I think the biggest factor is the tanking of the economy and the market. Trillions of dollars…gone….just like the scenario that will occur if Nobama and his style of Chicago politics get their hands on the White House. If we thought corruption was bad with Bush and his regime, just wait. NObama will make dumbya look like a piker.

  • kinthenorthwest

This is what really shocks me….Obama is spending money like there is no tomorrow. I mean look at all the other things that that money could go for.
It wouldnt be so bad if a lot of the money wasnt just for things that were not really necessary….Like using the big plane to go to Hawaii(wouldnt a smaller jet be cheaper since it was only him and secret service), the stadium and background for his acceptance speech, his around the world tour, and the list goes on…….Why does Obama feel he needs to buy America and the World’s votes….

If he is spending money like this How is the money going to be spend when he gets into office.
Just out of curiosity does anyone know how the expenses are handled in the white house? You know like food, decorating, entertaing and etc. For I know that most of those expenses are not part of his salary….I keep wondering if Obama will bankrupt America if he moves into the white house—Dont forget they all keep talking about a basketball court…That shouldnt cost too much should it.

Remember, he kept saying, “this is about you [his creepy supporters], not me” Everything is about him.

Speaking of massive ad dollars pouring out of the Obama campaign war chest and the continuing lack of any sense of substance to the man, question:

Has anybody ever watched an ad and thought, “Wow, that was a really cool ad,” and a few seconds later realized you didn’t remember what the ad was for?

    Same thing.

What’s the man ever done, ever, any significant constituent achievement of his own creation, not piggy-backed with others, whether in the part-time Illinois Legislature or during his brief lay-over in the U.S. Senate, that qualifies him to run the free world?

An ad campaign can create an image.

An ad campaign cannot create a history.

    Great ads.

I have thought the emails a waste of keyboard time and have ignored them.” This is rather dismissive of the many who bothered to write her with an urgent legitimate concern, which her own journalistic integrity should have demanded that she investigate. Yeah. I can’t cheer this supercilious attitude. It sounds like she just wants to clear up her inbox and get all of us loons to shut the f- up.

Obama, the Democratic nominee, spent more than $105 million during the first two weeks of October

On what? No really what the world could he possible have spent that much money on in that short of time? After he had been spend $30 to $40 mil a month for close to 6 months. In the month of sept obama’s campaign spent $96 million dollars. Two weeks later another $105 mil. On what exactly.

Ani, during the primaries the Obama and Clinton supporters were asked by the najor polling companies who they would vote for if their candidate didn’t get the nomination. 20% of Obama’s supporters said they’d go for Mccain, and 28% of Clinton’s said the same.

I know polls can be inaccurate (I’ve carped about the statistical errors before), but given the treatment of Sen. Clinton and her supporters by the Obama camp, I think that figure might be for real.

It’s large enough to drive a truck through, but visiting the various web sites, I’ve heard estimates of 10% to 40% of Clintonites switching over. 25% seems reasonable.

When will the Obama and Michelle tapes become available to the public from the African Press International. I heard Fox News was going to receive them–did they? They mentioned many terrible things about us, The American People. When a man is running for the highest office in our land, he needs to be proud of America and her Great People or he should bow out and live in some other country. He also has to be truthful about all the answers he gives when asked. We’re still waiting for the answers and the elections only 11 days away—what gives. I love this country and I’m an immigrant, now a proud citizen since 1973- My parents couldn’t wait to become Americans -I don’t like Socialism or Communism. I’m so looking forward to reading this blog on November 4. October began with Obama having a 3-1 cash advantage over McCain. He bought half an hour of prime time on all the networks. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, he’s up by eight to twelve nationwide and it’s starting to look like the electoral map I drew in June was a bit conservative.

  • Leisa

Wow, Sen M troll is in true bot form, how sweet.

  • Sen. Magoo (R, AZ)

Looks like Obama leads by 2.2 according to RCP in Florida, a state whose import in this election looks to be on par with Kansas and Utah. McCain leads in the Rasmussen and Mason-Dixon polls by 1, while Obama leads in every other recent poll by as many as 7. FiveThirtyEight shows 3-1 odds against McCain winning there.

    Tied? Maybe. Important? No.

  • Jane the Plumber

People are waiting 4 hours in line to vote here in Florida. They look like Obama supporters to me.

My husband and I mailed absentee ballots to avoid the lines. We voted straight republican for the first time ever. I pray there are more of us, I worry myself sick over this election.

Excuse me but those are IMPORTED styrofoam pillars from Zeus’s temple on Mount Olympus!

  • KathyNeocon

    Yeah right.

    Hey Bot–

Here’s an idea for you. Since according to you The Precious has already won the election, why don’t you stock up on Kool-Aid and head on over to Chicago to set up your tent in the front row for the Messiah’s election night bash. There are probably lots of Obots there already. You want to get as close to your Master as possible on Election night to bask in his aura and glory.

  • Sen. Magoo (R, AZ)

Yeah, plus there’s this ACORN story which is one of the top five most idiotic things I’ve ever heard. Also, you’re an idiot for believing it.

  • Latina

Thank you Susan, I am a little less depressed today. At least there is still some fair competition (budget related) to continue this upright battle till the end. No wonder MEEEEEchelle was asking for more money this week.

  • workingclass artist

    Yeah…Barky’s supporters are Barn Sour…lol
When a horse senses to is close to home they get Barn Sour…and if you don’t know what your doin they will run themselves right into a tree…lol…

  • Mary Kay

I was called on that survey during the primaries.

  • Sen. Magoo (R, AZ)

I’m going to the one in Topeka, because that’s where I vote.

Here’s an idea for you: why don’t you make some outlandish proposition that makes no sense. Let’s see, what can we do that hasn’t already been done…Obama not born in Hawaii? No, that’s been done and debunked…Michelle Obama rails against whitey? Oh damn. You got assaulted by an Obama supporter who carved a B into your cheek! No. Shit.

Okay, I give up. Looks like all the crazy’s been used up for this election. But I’m sure there’s more coming from here.

  • Leisa

Sen Magoo, you are an ambassador of hate, and your name calling and ignorant comments are as divisive as your dear leader.

Once you remove the beam form your eye and hate from your heart, maybe people will listen to you.

  • KathyNeocon

which is one of the top five most idiotic things I’ve ever heard.

    Really? Thanks for sharing.

    Here are my top five:

    1) Obama is qualified to be President.
    2) Obama is not racist.
    3) Obama is a US citizen.
    4) Obama and MEchelle love America.
    5) Obama is not a Marxist.

  • Sen. Magoo (R, AZ)

Roy Blunt is one of the reasons Obama is winning in Missouri. Choose your heroes wisely.

Actually, everyone is so sick of seeing him, this is going have backlash that isn’t even conscious.

What politician is more important than the World Series?

    McCain/Palin

  • Jane the Plumber

If you think he’s spending a lot now…wait till he gets his hands on the Federal piggy bank. :(

  • Leisa

That Sen Magoo belongs on Looney Tunes, what a maroon, as Bugs Bunny would say.

  • Sen. Magoo (R, AZ)

Ah, there’s hate in my heart, is there?

I suppose there’s an ounce of truth to that. I hate ignorance. I hate prejudice. I really hate lies and the people that tell them. And possibly my greatest hate is for people who use lies to whip ignorant or prejudiced people into a frenzy of wrongness. So I suppose you could say I have hate in my heart for Larry Johnson and Sarah Palin.

Also I hate people who use the flag of this great country to hide their sins. So I suppose throw John McCain on that list.

  • Sen. Magoo (R, AZ)

See, those things aren’t idiotic, they’re just facts. Might as well put 1+1=2 on your insipid list.

  • athy

    Jackie,
I have been hearing and seeing heavy spending here in local and some statewide races.

Several months ago these Democrats were crying poverty NOW all of a sudden I am getting an average of 8 mailers (sometimes 2 in 1 day) to support local Democratic candidates and I am seeing a TREMENDOUS increase in local TV ads for the local Democratic candidates.

I wonder where our local and state level democratic candidates are getting all that money from. Like I said, several months ago they were all crying poverty.

If Sen Obama campaign is passing on some of the contributions meant for his presidential campaign-if he is passing on to other local or state wide democratic races, is he breaking any campaign finance laws?

  • KathyNeocon

And possibly my greatest hate is for people who use lies to whip ignorant or prejudiced people into a frenzy of wrongness.

Then you must really hate “get in their faces and argue” Obama. What about those rabid Obots vandalizing cars and homes all over the country, assaulting McCain supporters, and inciting misogyny and racism?

  • PewL

Wonder why the Obama’s keep pushing people to vote early..Michelle did it again in her speech..Wonder if they know something is coming down the pipes, and wants enough votes in,just in case..My mother in law received 4 emails today for money….Two from the Clinton’s and 2 from Obama;s.She was a Clinton supporters now for Mccain. How will he ever fork out the 2 mil for his exceptance speech…Maybe they can celebrate in the basement of Rev Wrights Church.lol

I think more money is going out to Mccain actually..

  • Jason

Anti-Obama Hillary supporters get a shout out on this article entitled “Signs Pointing To A McCain Victory”:

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/10/signs_pointing_to_a_mccain_vic.html

Who are these pro-McCain Democratic voters? They overwhelmingly tend to be former Hillary supporters. Perhaps the most well-known of these voters are the “PUMAs” – which stands for Party Unity My Ass. These are Hillary supporters who are adamantly opposed to Obama. Let’s not forget that during the Democratic primaries – real elections, not polls – Hillary crushed Obama among white working-class and middle-class voters in such key states as Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. If a meaningful number of these voters end up voting for McCain, as I predict they will, then Obama’s smooth road to the White House is going to run smack into a brick wall.

  • http://obamacrimes.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

    PUMAs rock!

  • bethtopaz

    Obama is a good person.

You guys (and gals) give me so much hope this election season.

PUMAs are the stealth McCain vote.

good point! i no longer watch the blather brigade on tv anymore. i’ll watch law and order or house, the weather channel and local news. otherwise i go to the computer.

mindless know nothings with too much makeup and too few brains reading telepromoters irritate me.

  • stodghie

magoo! my, my, you sound like an angry, desperate little bot! hehehehe

  • stodghie

don’t the bots sound more desperate and angry. they used to try and use a little more subtle approach.

  • Kristen

I think a major factor is how the media is treating Palin. It brings up a lot of hostility and bad feelings with how everyone treated Clinton in the primaries. I think people are just sick of it.

  • bemused

One of the comments yesterday that seems to have disappeared was that the return of a certified letter could be used to claim that the voter was not really there and it was an invalid voter. Obviously that would be straightened out eventually, but I have used registered mail this way myself (not for voting, but to establish that I tried to reach someone and they didn’t respond). It still seems like a stupid waste of funds.

Actually, there appears to be a simple methodical error in the polls, and we can actually quantify it and adjust for it. This error is the hang-up rate, i.e. people who refuse to participate in the polls. It is far higher this election than previously. This makes sense, after all, what do you do when you get junk phone calls? You tell them to pi$$ off and hang up. Now suppose, instead, it’s a pollster, and you decide to participate. But then they tell you that they have 100 questions, and will you take 45 minutes to participate — NOW, will you tell them to pi$$ off? Don’t laugh, some of these polls are as bad as that. Specifically, the CBS/NYT poll asks 100 questions, and they consistently show a 12%-13% lead for Obama. It’s pretty clear that they are measuring only those people who are willing to answer 100 questions.

If you look at other polls, the trend is plain — those polls which ask the fewest questions show the best results for McCain. So this is the systematic bias in today’s polls — they don’t count people who won’t particiate, and those people are overwhelmingly McCain voters.

So, why has Obama’s lead been increasing lately? Simply because people are losing their patience with the left-wing biased media, and are hanging up at an increased rate as the campaign progresses. And that’s all it is, the hang-up rate, and not a swing to Obama at all. Simple, eh?

Lastly, we can remove this bias by treating the hang-up rate as a certain percentage McCain vote, and seeing what hypothetical percentage yields consistency between the polls, if you add them in. My rough rule of thumb calculation shows 80% McCain, and does not include the “excess”, that is, those voters who just hang up right away, regardless of how many questions the pollsters want to ask.

This all makes sense, as with all the junk phone calls we get, people don’t have the patience for telephone-led processes like they used to any more. It’s like the old famous Willkie phone poll, which showed only how a systematic bias controlled the result, well, today’s sytematic bias is the vastly greater hang-up rate, which are McCain voters overwhelmingly. Look for a decisive McCain win on November 4.
