Late Night Reverend Jeremiah “God Damn AmeriKKKa” Wright Open Thread

The National Republican Trust PAC will air the following advertisement in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida:

According to the Politico, the National Republican Trust PAC will spend $2.5 million in order to air this advertisement in important media markets in the three swing states.

Many here at No Quarter desired an advertisement on Reverend Wright, and now we finally have it. Republicans are also excited about this advertisement. I quote:

This is the base giving a collective direction to where the campaign should have gone a long time ago,” said Rick Wilson, the consultant who made it.

Do you agree with Wilson? And what do you think of the advertisement? Do you believe McCain should have discussed Reverend Jeremiah “God Damn AmeriKKKa” Wright in June and not in late October? Or is now the perfect moment to remind voters of Obama’s ties to the radical pastor who humps the altar and issues threats and calls for violence from the pulpit?

Consider this an open thread.

      Yes, the new server is speedy. Plus after three days without, it is great to be able to access NQ again. I missed you.

    There’s that famous Obama cool, calm equanimity the press is always gushing about “I don’t think my church is particularly controversial.”

    That’s our new leader folks! What would he have said on 9/11? “I will look into this. As soon as I get back from Hawaii. They’ll call me if they need me.”

  • Suzanne

    20 years of this? And Ogreat didn’t hear anything wrong. Well we never saw his medical records. He must be deaf.

  • streetparade

    Obama has never been able to give an answer for sitting in that pew for 2 decades…because there is no answer.

    Wright, Phleger, Ayres, Rezko, Al-Mansour (he makes Wright look like a puppy and matches Ayres in evilness), ‘redistribution’, voting against the Born Alive act, over-reaching government power, civilian military forces – it’s who Obama IS.

    If someone shows you who he is – BELIEVE HIM.

    • http://firefox McAnnie Baracuda

      Yep and don’t leave out Farrakhan. He’s the really rabid one who the others quote. That idea about the 401k’s, redistribution, etc., is right out of his script.

      i posted at the bottom of thread,

      Audio of Bill Ayers talking to BO in 2001 chgo radio show

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZmCN7DnXYI

      Maybe this will be on FOX tomorrow.

    • bemused

      Yes, another quick vid that could play off this, linking O>>Wright>>Farrakhan>>Monsour, that would really be good, reinforce the message that it is a group, there is a base, it has a history and is ongoing. Start with the Malcolm X speech with “hoodwinking” and “bamboozling,” then segue into O. saying that, then work up to Mansour “tearing the flesh” and back to “hoodwinking.”

  • Geoff

    This spot needs 20 million behind it to truly work. I wish some GOP bigwigs would step up and fund this thing.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/blog/ Truthteller

      I hope more advertisements similar to this surface before election day. But I also hope more money is invested in this advertisement.

  • Jon

    They need to air it in Missouri too.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/blog/ Truthteller

      I agree. The 527 should also air the advertisement in NC and VA.

  • Indy

    I’m going to visit there website to donate a few bucks for this cause. However I believe that people did see it the first time around, and BO may have lost this race long before the DNC anointed him as “the one to win us the White House”. Hillary did kick his butt just about everywhere after that.

    I’ve said it before, and I’ll say again: he is going to lose, and perhaps lose big. And I’ll be up on election night, drinking my beer and laughing my typical white woman bitter a$$ off.

  • Docelder

    Well here he goes again… with that redistribution word. Chicago DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) in April 1996.

    The state government can also play a role in redistribution, the allocation of wages and jobs.

    • Geoff

      Nice, thanks.

    • athena

      “Luckily, Mr. Obama does not have any opposition in the primary. His opponents have all dropped out or were ruled off the ballot. But if you would like to contribute to his campaign, make the check payable to Friends of Barack Obama, 2154 E. 71st, Chicago, IL 60649. If you would like to become involved in his campaign, call the headquarters at (312) 363-1996.” Yea – lucky us.

  • Patience

    I think this little reminder is well-timed. I was on Politico earlier today when the story broke. The Obama supporters were out in FULL FORCE trying to dismiss this ad as either old news, desperate, racist, irrelevant — you get the picture. But the sheer flurry of their comments betrayed their fury. And this was right after Politico covered the Obama Supreme Court/civil rights/redistribution of wealth audio which REALLY set them off — they were absolutely out of control.

    • AF catfish

      You know, it just isn’t racist to bring this up.

      He knew Wright might be AN issue in his campaign, but he didn’t quite grasp WHY Wright would be an issue.

      Wright is a poverty pimp. He may have good intentions, but he urges people to remain in a state of powerlessness and blame whitey and America.

      • Northwest rain

        The AA leaders didn’t want their base to move out into the suburbs because that would live voids into which non AA would fill and dilute the power of the solid AA voting block. Which means a few AAs would become very wealthy — sort of like Rev. Wright.

        Sort of like the Democrat leadership using women — claiming that ONLY the Democrats could “protect” women from the big bad GOP. Ha! Turns out that the Dems sold women down the river and approved Alito and Roberts — so much for “protecting” women.

        Many women have realized that our votes were being used and we have gotten nowhere. One of these days the AAs will also wake up and realize that they are being used.

      • cathnealon

        AF
        Yeah, good intentions and he’s sitting in them right now in his 1.6 million dollar mansion next to BO in Chicago–the only difference between Wright and the Wall Street guys is that he used religion to get his money. Remember what Jesus did to the money people and their tables set up outside the church in the New Testament?

    • Ai1een

      For the life of me, I have never understood how airing this TRUTH – that this hate filled WACKO was a close mentor of Obama’s, is “RACIST”. I just don’t get it.

      It was Obama’s CHOICE to attend that church just as it was my choice to be a member of a church whose congregation is about 52% white/48% AA.

      Obama endorsed Wright in every way possible for 20 years.

      He endorsed him financially, by giving Trinity Church his money – $26,000 in one year alone – money which went to help pay Wright’s salary.

      Obama endorsed him publicly even introducing Wright with the following words: “…a great man, not just for Chicago, but for the world!”

      Obama endorsed him politically – placing Rev. Wright on one of his own committees for the Obama for President Campaign.

      Those who say reminding America of Obama’s personal choices is “racist” are the ones who seem to believe that we should not hold Obama accountable for his actions. Such mollycoddling, such handling of Obama with kid gloves is the epitome of RACISM for it is saying, somehow, that he should not be treated equally – not the same as the other “white” candidates – that he is somehow a candidate for which we need to make allowances. However, to do so is the truist form of racism no matter which way you look at it.

      I say it’s past time someone ripped the lace off of Obama’s jockey shorts and he was treated to the full onslaught of the media like every other candidate has been subjected. Has anyone seen PALIN get treated with such “allowances”?

      If we aren’t supposed to hold Obama accountable for his actions now – what is going to happen IF he wins the Presidency?

      • baby-puppy

        Mentioning Jeremiah is racist because Bill Moyers said so! I can’t stand this fear both Hillary and McCain let the media impose on them. They should fight for America, media be damned.

        As Sarah says, she didn’t come to seek the good opinion of those dorks.

      • AnninCA

        I don’t think that’s McCain’s reason for not encouraging these ads.

        I think it is because the story was done over and over and over again back when it broke. To bring it up again is to allow Obama the opportunity to turn this away from his tax policies and go back to the all-too-successful race card meme.

        He wins that one, hands-down.

        He won it the first time this story broke. He’d win it again.

      • fif

        Didn’t you get the memo? He wasn’t “IN church THAT day.” As if Wright didn’t live, breathe, and eat Black Liberation Theology for years. I know intelligent people who willfully believe this lie and repeat it. It’s like a little kid offering the most transparent lie that any adult can see through. I wish someone had done a good ad with all his associations and corresponding excuses back to back:

        “He was just a guy in the neighborhood”

        “He’s not the X I knew.”

        “I was not aware of that…”

        Every lie has been followed by emerging facts and subsequent explanations, admitting more and more of a relationship. This pattern has been repeated many times. HE IS A COMPULSIVE LIAR. It’s that simple. The ad could end with: if he’s lying about these relationships, what will he lie about to you, the people, if he sits in the Oval Office?”

        It also bugs me that the danger of his associations has not be more clearly defined in terms of national security & foreign policy. If he did not know when to remove himself from the company of raging bigots and anti-Americanism (especially as a Senator), then he will not have the judgment to know how to conduct himself in delicate relationships with foreign powers. He will not know where to draw the line with hostile influences. I DO NOT TRUST HIM.

    • Phillymiss

      Hmm . . . I wonder if McCain had gone to a church run by a white supermacist if people would think it is irrelevant?

      Many black people share your sentiment, but their voices are drown out by the racist MSM and pseudo intellectual radical liberals who pigeon hole you into some “community” to exploit you for their idealistic felgercarb (bullshit). Its disgusting. I keep saying that 95% figure of support in blacks for Der Precious is nonsense. If people believe it, it makes it easier to stuff the ballot boxes in heavy minority districts.

    • AF catfish

      I saw the news about the death threat and said yeah right Obama wishes. Then I felt bad for being so cynical. You’re right – it was timed to trump the 2001 interview.

    • Indy

      Excellent point. Obama is an un-trainable puppy, the kind who wags the tail and pretends it didn’t do one wrong thing.

    • C.S.

      However, Governor Palin being hug in effigy on someone’s porch isn’t even news. Did the Secret Service or FBI investigate at all?

      We’re still a Democracy and I’m sick of double standards. We know that Obama disciples are just as violent as these skinheads but law enforcement is keeping a close eye on skinheads while state (MO, Iowa) and federal officials just can’t see a connection between the violent threats against Palin ranging from rap to murder and the skinheads’ violent plots!

    • AnninCA

      The story is ridiculous. It’s as far-fetched as the lady with the B cut into her face.

      Someone got ahold of these idiot’s writings and blew it up to be a hero.

      I know skinheads can be quite dangerous, but the fact is that most of them are so into meth that the plans never get to first base. About all they can do it beat some poor unlucky victim up on the street.

    • bemused

      I thought the funny part was that O. was actually last on their hit list! They didn’t really think they’d get that far.

    • Phillymiss

      Amen! I mentioned before I am AA and I don’t like Obama. However, I dare not say it in public for fear of being attacked. I casually said once that Hillary was more qualified to be president and received so many hostile glances, I just decided to be quiet and vote McCain Nov. 5th. The sad/funny thing about the primary, however, was that before Hillary was running black people LOVED the Clintons, but then she became a be-atch, racist, etc.

      However, I think that the 95 percent voting for Barky is not too far off, because black people traditionally vote Democrat.

      The skinhead attack however, was scary. Sounds like it was foiled by some good police work. Those young men that planned the attack seemed like they had some serious mental health issues. I hope that if Obama gets elected, he doesn’t get assasinated. I don’t like the guy, but I don’t want him to be shot. There’s a lot of miserable, hateful people out there. And given all the nonsense going on during this election cycle, I wouldn’t be surprised if the MSM tried to link these attacks to McCain.

    Did they really have to use the picture with the kids? I don’t like that at all. Michelle is fair game, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to use their images in an attack ad.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/blog/ Truthteller

      Wright baptized the children, and he presided over the wedding. In other words, Wright is an adviser, role model and mentor to the entire family. Indeed, he is a member of Obama’s family. Did not Obama refer to him as an uncle?

      • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

        I think he was trying to rationalize the racist pastor by saying he was like one of those meschuga uncles every family has.

        Der Precious referred to Wright as his “friend, mentor and pastor.”

        • socalannie

          I think he was trying to rationalize the racist pastor by saying he was like one of those meschuga uncles every family has.

          You’re right, that’s exactly what barky was trying to put over on people. But it doesn’t wash. I have a crazy, prejudiced uncle myself. I see him at family funerals every few years. I don’t seek out his company on a weekly basis or give large donations to him, or include him in the most important events in my life. Barky’s comparison is lame, like all of his arguments.

      • Crystal

        Obama decision to take his girls to the church was a very bad one, but that doesn’t excuse the bad judgment of another person. If we intend to defeat Obama, we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Using images of his children in an attack ad will only serve as a distraction to the important message. We all know Obama is going to whine that this isn’t fair. He is looking for things like this. I think the ad would have been just as effective without the photo with the children.

        • SarahRocks

          Crystal–

          I had to go back and take another look at the ad since I missed the photos of the kids.

          I’m not saying this is good/bad. They were missed by me and will probably be missed by others.

          • Northwest rain

            Do NOT over think this.

            Obama said that nut job Rev. Wright is like an uncle, a member of the family — Rev. Wright married Obama & wife, Rev. Wright baptized the children.

            Obama used his family to hide his poor judgement — photos of family — photos of Rev. Wright — WITH photos of family.

            This is about saving America from an inexperienced person with very poor judgment — and Obama called Rev. Wright his family.

            This ad is mild compared to what the fucking Democrat nut cases on blogs etc. have been doing to Palin’s family —

            To most people these photos would seem like generic family photos — except that Rev. Wright is included in intimate family moments as a family member.

            Sometimes liberals are a pain in the butt — trying to be so damned PC — screw that — this is war.

            • ray

              Wright on, Northwest.

    • Ai1een

      In this ad, the camera skims over the picture and one can see, accurately, that there are two girls referenced, however, the image of their faces are not seen whatsoever.

      It could have been my two daughters in the pic, yours or anyone’s. To not reference them at all would have been inaccurate as everyone knows that Obama has 2 daughters. I believe it was correct of the producers of this ad to acknowledge the daughters existence, while at the same time they did not show any visage of their faces whatsoever, therefore remaining ethical.

  • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

    Hi All,

    The election is in 8 days. Obama must be defeated. It will
    be difficult but I now believe it can actually happen.

    We are working with just over 600 colleges and 25,000 students
    who will be out in force on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    They will be handing out flyers that will drive people to either
    a website: http://www.ReleaseYourRecords.info or to a toll-free
    information line (you’ll get the number in a later update).

    If each student meets their commitment we will have visited
    a MINIMUM of 5 million households or about 12-15 million voters!

    We have PRIMARILY targeted the “battleground” states as much
    as possible.

    ***I am still looking for a number of “coordinators” in several
    states… if you are able to be a “point” person in FL, VA, WI,
    OH, PA, NM, MO, NC or IN please let me know… we may need you!

    ***If you would be willing to call colleges in your area please
    let me know. There are many colleges that are not a part of
    the CRNC.

    ***If you are able to travel to Washington, DC BEFORE the election
    to help coordinate students who will be gathering in front of
    public buildings please let me know asap.

    We are also asking all of the students to send to their email
    list this video: http://getresponse.com/click.html?x=a62a&lc=IASa&mc=3&s=in2mA&y=J&

    While I am hoping that one of the state lawsuits “stick” and
    am looking forward to Phillip Berg’s appeal to the U.S. Supreme
    Court, I believe that this is the best method of influencing
    this election.

    PLEASE continue to post http://www.OperationExposeObama.com on the
    forums and websites you visit. The more people who get behind
    our efforts the more we can continue to do after the election,
    if need be.

    Don’t let the polls get you down… we are changing them!!!

    More tomorrow…

    All the Best,

    “Talk to your grandparents about Obama”

    The one thing most grandparents have in common is that they have the most wonderful grandchildren in the world – so clever, so handsome, so pretty, ever so precious. Even if you are still unsure of your path in life, and even if your parents and friends occasionally wonder about you, your grandma and grandpa love you and have faith in you.

    That is your weapon! “Precious” needs to get on the phone and say, “Grandpa, Grandma, I am asking you to vote for Barack Obama. This is really important to me. It’s about my future. It’s about the world I will be living in. It’s about the world I want for my future children. (They will love that one!) Please! Do it for me!”

    …The really great part of this strategy is that everything you could possibly say to your grandparents about how important Barack’s election is for you is one hundred percent true.

    TIME OUT! TIME OUT! TIME OUT!

    MOST…SINISTER…DESPICABLE…CAMPAIGN…EVER!

    • http://firefox McAnnie Baracuda

      Hahahhaha. My grandson knows what my answer is already to all that!

      I’m saving the world for you by voting for John McCain and Sarah Palin. If your thinking is not developed to the point that you can be independent of peer pressure and personalities, I will lead the way for this family by getting this terrible man away from you and your generation. You’ll thank me later.

    • Annie Oakley

      That is despicable. Use your relationship with you grandparents, use their love for you. If they think you’re precious, maybe they’ll give you the hopey-changey wind him up and he pees and bamboozles you fraud of a president they want for Christmas.

      Who cares if your grandparents are real people and love is a sacred bond between generations? Anything and everything for THE Precious. And that’s on his webpage, his words, his campaign. Disgusting.

    • Annie Oakley

      And it continues:

      Put some urgency in your voice. Sound very disappointed in them if they give you excuses. Come back again, even harder. “This is about my future – my ability to get a good job, to live a healthy life, to have the same (or even more) opportunities than you had to succeed. I have never felt more strongly about anything. I am begging you to vote for Barack Obama. I need you to do this for me!”

      This is just a sample script. You know what it takes to get to them.

      WORM was “GET IN THEIR FACES.”

      This is really despicable and low even for a Chicago thug. Some one should make an ad of Obama’s campaign telling kids to use their grandparents’ love for them as a WEAPON for the Obamboozler.

      LOL – I beat you to the same theme by 8 seconds.

      Horrible stuff though, ain’t it?

      As someone commented on another blog regarding this targeting of kids by the Obama campaign..

      When it comes to commercial advertisement, government bodies such as FDC and FDA have been going after marketers who target children age 12 and under. Yes, it’s exactly the same age group that Sen. Obama targets so explicitly. Just last year FDC along with its European counterpart pushed Masterfoods to stop marketing of its products (e.g. Snickers, Milky Way and Twix) to kids. Apparently, from the government’s perspective, kids age 12 and under are not mature enough to figure out whether Snickers are good or bad for their health, and thus can be misled by advertising. But of course, figuring out where a presidential candidate stands on taxes, abortion, education and national security is much easier. So why would the government have any problem with that?

    Barack’s job at the Gamaliel Foundation. As I recall reading somewhere Barack talks of getting a $25K per year job as an organizer. From the website …Pay is commensurate with experience; $25,000-$58,000 per year. Guess he has been hitting the “experience” wall from the start. ;)

    EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

    ORGANIZERS for community based power organizations. Position involves organizing poor and working class people to combat corporate and political power at the local, regional and state level through institution based organizing and strategic action.

    Must be self-motivated, systematic thinker with a deep desire to transform America. Positions available at all levels in a variety of major metropolitan areas. Pay is commensurate with experience; $25,000-$58,000 per year.

Obama sat in that church, listening to that for twenty years, yet claims he never heard it, never saw it, never knew it was going on.

      Could well have just been some genuine neo-Nazi scum who had no real intention of shooting a single person but just hatched the story in order to get back into jail to be with their neo-Nazi gang members and to be hailed as heroes. There are of course gangs of white supremacists in jail as there are Bloods and Crips. They all stick together and for some, jail is a way of life.

    I posted the following on YouTube today, just revised and upgraded the quality and re-posted.

    Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zdJfjcNgXQ

    I recommend it to all. If you find it worthy (just lost the ***** rating because I replaced it), please pass it on.

    Nothing contained in this piece is from anyone outside the Obama campaign casting stones at the House of Glass. There is no need for that.

    Who has always made the best case against the candidacy of Barack Obama?

    Barack Obama.

    The only things in this “Web Ad” are Barack Obama’s own words (in 2004, not when he was 8 years old) and those of the friends he claims.

    One Note: John McCain — a man who might be too honorable for his own good, in this case — has declared this material off limits.

    My response: THE TRUTH IS NEVER OFF LIMITS.

    For your consideration.

    • http://firefox McAnnie Baracuda

      Along with the ranting of Wright, the other enlightening aspect is how his audience cheers every word damning all of us. This is what the Obama’s have had their children exposed to for all of their young lives. When he loses this election, will their hatred be solidified? Are they already immersed in Wright’s victimhood?

      It’s always the fault of others. No one can ever be sorry or apologetic enough for the past. They are determined to be angry forever. As one acquaintance said back in the 70′s after being taken for $$$ by the Black Panthers (doesn’t if feel great to help the oppressed?)…”They never let you forget that you are white and privileged and they do their best to punish you for it.” Yes, that trumps all.

      Can we be grateful to Dr. King and successful people such as Bill Cosby for giving their all to show the way for AA’s out of this misery?

      • IndieDogg

        Exactly, McAnnie. Watch the audience. And I have a question.

        Is it possible to sit in that congregation for over 20 years and never hear a thing but the choir singing?

    Obama: The WRIGHT man for the WRONG job.

  • Jason

    What we should expect from an Obama Presidency:

    • Increased taxes result in a deepening and lengthening of the recession;
    • Deepening and lengthening of the recession leads to increased unemployment;
    • Increased unemployment leads to increased welfare payments;
    • Increased welfare payments lead to higher deficits;
    • The quality of medical care received by all Americans declines as a government operated health care system is put in place and becomes mired in inefficiency and haunted by mediocrity;
    • Increased welfare and entitlement programs lead to higher deficits;
    • Increased welfare and entitlement payments and concern of higher deficits lead to accelerated decreases in defense spending;
    • The freedom of working men and women to vote by secret ballot to determine whether their workplace will become union only is taken away;
    • Protective policies designed to keep jobs in America hurt ability of American business to compete with companies that have access to less expensive labor markets;
    • Protectionist business and trade policies greatly deepen and lengthen the recession in developing parts of the world;
    • US agreement to the Kyoto environmental treaties increases cost of energy to all Americans;
    • New laws to coerce conservation drive up the cost of energy, impact the freedom of Americans to chose how to spend on energy, and fuels a lower standard of living for Americans;
    • Abrupt withdrawal of US troops from Iraq instigates a new civil war and instability in Iraq;
    • Withdrawal of US troops from Iraq motivates and inspires Islamist radicals world wide and is seen as proof of Alah’s approval of jihad by any method;
    • Inspired by defeat of the Great Satan (US) in Iraq, Islamist movements in the Middle East become overwhelming polical forces that further radicalize the area;
    • Iran continues development of nuclear weapon program unabated;
    • Hamas and Hezbollah become further emboldened and step use of terror to achieve political ends;
    • Islamists seize control of Pakistan;
    • Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwaiti governments fall under Taliban style Islamist control, subjecting women all over the Middle East to radical traditional Islamic rules;
    • Sources of energy in Middle East dominated by radical Islamists, who use that threat of cutting off oil to intimidate energy using countries;
    • Russia, sensing US and western weakness, invades former Soviet block countries to re-establish empire;
    • Weakened US seeks peace through appeasement of Russia and gives up missle defense capabilities in Europe;
    • North Korea re-establishes nuclear programs;
    • America refuses to ratify the Free Trade Agreement with Columbia, and relations with capitslist in South and Central America are undermined;
    • Cuban Venezuela alliance spreads communist influence in South and Central America, undermining US interests and weakening heispheric trade;
    • At home, the movement to scrap the US Constitution becomes public and gains support in Democratic circles as it has with the radical left;
    • Efforts to redistribute wealth serve to divide Americans into competing interests seeking advantage and favor from politicians;
    • America begins a tranformation from a nation of laws with a system of justice designed to ensure the protection of rights, liberty and property of every American into a more European style government where the power of the state through oppressive regulation is determined by the whims of policitians gleaning public good from political contributions and support here and abroad;
    • The United States Supreme Court is stacked with law professor intellectuals whose agenda makes the Warren Court look like the John Birch Society;
    • Through treaties and executive agreements, there begins a process whereby US sovereignty is ceded to international organizations like the Untied Nations and the International Court; and
    • This is just the first term.

    Financial Post

    Dr. Doom Forecasts Depression

    http://www.europac.net/externalframeset.asp?id=14421

    By Janet Whitman

    Peter D. Schiff, an extreme bear who correctly foresaw the U.S. stock-market slide, the home mortgage meltdown and the credit crunch, still sees plenty of doom and gloom ahead. As president of Euro-Pacific Capital, a Connecticut-based brokerage, the 43-year old financial advisor has long been urging his clients to get their money out of U.S. stock and bond markets and look for safer investments outside of America or put their nest eggs into silver and gold.

    Mr. Schiff, a frequent pundit on U.S. business channels whose gloomy views have earned him the nickname “Dr. Doom,” sees no need to alter that strategy. He expects a lot more downside, despite the already precipitous drop in U.S. stocks, which has seen the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumble 40% from its October 2007 record of 14,164 to 8,379 points as of Friday’s close.

    Far from fixing the problem, the US$700-billion Wall Street bailout and other government interventions are only going to prolong the pain, predicts Mr. Schiff, who was economic advisor for libertarian Ron Paul’s 2008 presidential campaign.

    The economy, he says, appears headed for its first depression since the Dirty Thirties. Mr. Schiff spoke with the Financial Post’s Janet Whitman.

    FP: How did the U.S. get into this mess?

    Peter Schiff: It was the result of reckless monetary policies. Of course, the rest of the world is not blameless. They’re the ones who loaned us all the money that we spent. We couldn’t have dug ourselves into this gigantic hole without them. We’ve printed and spent and borrowed our way into a financial disaster. What we are witnessing is the consequences of the excesses of our economy, especially over the past eight years since the bursting of the tech bubble. We basically ended up with false economic growth. Ultimately, if an economy lives by credit, it dies by credit. When we can’t borrow any more, it implodes. A lot of companies were built around this phony economy. Americans are now too broke to buy those products. We never could afford to pay for them. We were paying for them with debt.

    FP: Are government bailouts helping?

    PS: Everything that the government is doing right now is designed to prevent the market from administering its tough medicine. All of the bailouts are a bad idea. The government is trying to put more cash out there so Americans can keep spending. We don’t need more loans for consumers. We need less. Consumers should not be borrowing. They should be doing the opposite. We’re trying to encourage more of the behavior that’s behind the problem.

    FP: What is the solution then?

    PS: What we need is real change. We need to rein in the government and let lose the free market, unfettered by government. It was government intervention that created this crisis in the first place. The Federal Reserve brought interest rates down and provided all this cheap money for everyone to speculate with. A lot of Americans refinanced and took out much bigger mortgages in the last few years. The idea was, You don’t want to leave all of that equity in your house. You’re rich now, you live in half million-dollar house. You need a media room and a Mercedes. You can’t be driving that Ford. Everybody was spending all that money like they were entitled to it. Now all the debt is still there and we can’t pay it back. We can’t fix the problem. We can’t stop housing prices from falling because they are too high. Most people still think that the government can fix it and put it back together the way it was. But we need housing prices to fall to a point where Americans can afford them – where you can put 20% down and have a mortgage payment that’s only 25% of your income. I think real estate in America is going to be the cheapest it’s ever been in real terms. Pendulums don’t stop in the center. They swing in the other direction and over shift.

    FP: How bad is the economic downturn going to get?

    PS: As of right now, we are headed for a depression, meaning a protracted period of economic contraction with elevated levels of bankruptcies and unemployment. It’s not going to be a recession the way we’ve come to know them. Whatever we call it, we’re still going to be in it at the end of [U.S. presidential contender Barack] Obama’s term. He’s going to be known as a depression-era president. Unfortunately, [things he's proposing to do] could make it worse and drag it out. The economy will be the issue when he goes for reelection…We have to restructure the economy in a different way. That’s going to involve a lot of pain. We haven’t seen the full extent of the doom and gloom in real economy. It’s showing up on Wall Street first because they funded all of the extravagance…But the bigger picture is the party is over. We’re going to have to get used to a different lifestyle. We’re going to have to start saving money again.

    FP: When might the U.S. stock market bottom out?

    PS: The U.S. stock market is still fairly expensive, especially if you factor in what future earnings are going to be. I think [the Dow] still has a long way to go down. Is it 7,500, 6,000, 5,000? I don’t know, but I don’t think we’re there yet. Adjusted for inflation, I think in five years the Dow is going to be below where it is today.

    Interesting, I went to school in England, the LSe, and we read mostly MARX and let me tell you, not a great writer. But what is significant is the extent to which MARX is unleashed in schools, and made to sound main stream.

    Colin Powell testifying on Sen. Ted Stevens:

    One of the nation’s best-known retired Army generals, Colin Powell, described Sen. Ted Stevens in court today as a “trusted individual” and a man with a “sterling” reputation.

    “He was someone whose word you could rely on,” said Powell, secretary of state in President Bush’s first term, who self-deprecatingly described himself as someone who retired as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and then “dabbled a bit in diplomacy.”

    Powell also endorsed Obama. Obviously, Powell is a great judge of character.

    Several Things…
    1. Most important – stop telling McCain what he should or should not being doing. At this point, it is a matter of what are we going to do about it. If you are scared, angry, and oppose Senator Government get off your a!@es and go to a McCain office in your area to volunteer. It is the most positive way to combat this horse shit.
    2. Yes, this is the best time to introduce Wright, the attention span in the election is about seven days long. I believe the campaign lost significant ground for two weeks because of the financial crisis and nothing was getting through. But this is all speculation and water under the bridge.
    3. Vote McCain Palin on November 4th – and take a friend to do the same.
