McCain Campaign Demands That LA Times Release Obama-Khalidi Video

Is there anybody Barack Obama hangs out with who would be welcome at your home for dinner?

From Politico: (Ben Smith)

John McCain’s campaign is demanding that the Los Angeles Times release a video of a party for a prominent Palestinian activist that Barack Obama attended in 2003.

The Times described the going-away party for former University of Chicago professor, and Obama friend, Rashid Khalidi, in a story in April. The story reported that Palestinians thought they might have a friend in Obama because of his friendships in that community, despite the fact that his positions have never been particularly pro-Palestinian.

“A major news organization is intentionally suppressing information that could provide a clearer link between Barack Obama and Rashid Khalidi,” said McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb, citing Obama’s friendship with Khalidi, who is now a professor at Columbia University.

….snip…

Critics have suggested that the Times is witholding the video for political reasons, but there are other possibilities: competitive reasons, or simply out of tradition. In the mechanics of reporting, there’s another possibility as well. The video may have been given to the paper on the condition it not be released, or releasing it could compromise its source.

But the Times hasn’t explained the move, and the McCain campaign is turning up the heat on a story that, whether or not the tape is released, is a reminder that some of Obama’s Hyde Park friends stand well to the left of his stated positions.

  • Shiloh

If this were the other way around there would be mass demonstrations in front of the LA Times and all the media would be screaming bloody murder. Just keep making the case that if the tape were released it would be devastating to Obama. Get that point across and the actual release won’t even be necessary.

    • AnninCA

I can see I need to avoid this story.

Folks, the public can’t bully the rights of the press anymore than the government should be allowed to do so.

I’m once again in the minority here.

I think you have no clue that you’re talking about dismantling a free press.

That…..I’ll never go with you on.

      Never.

      • Shiloh

A lot of us have doubts whether you are with us on anything at all.

        • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

I think it is misplaced ideology? Giving her the benefit of the doubt I think she is not giving weight where it belongs: We have a right under the same First Amendment to demand the release of the video. The LA Times is under no obligation to comply. No one is suggesting we march on the Times with torches and pitchforks. I fail to see how making a demand dismantles anything. It is our right!

          • tillthen

Annie is a dolt who can’t see beyond her nose. The story sounds fishy to me. Why would anyone give a tape to the LA Times and then say it can’t be aired. The only thing that would make sense is that the one who provided the tape asked for confidentiality. I don’t trust these people in LA. If it does show an anti-Israeli bent and Obama leads Israel into harm’s way, I wonder what the reaction in Hollywood would be with all these fawning phony liberals supporting the One. How on earth could they ever accommodate that?

            • tillthen

What I didn’t make clear above is that this is most likely a smoke screen, an excuse, not to show the tape because they are so far into the toilet for Obama.

              • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

Maybe they don’t have a video even? And why did they report on this at all if they are in the tank for Der Precious?

              • goldengrahme

The LA Times, like the corporate media everywhere is compromised; were they not bought up by the Chicago Tribune conglomerate? (Chicago–that has a familiar ring.) They have reduced staff and run through several more honest editors, who were genuinely interested in preserving journalism–after the takeover.

My Lord, a state apparatus that set by and let the people’s choice (Gray Davis) be usurped by the likes of Hollywood mogul, groper, Arnold Schwarzenegger, can hardly be counted on to deliver justice; a fair and balanced system of information is not the norm in CA nor a priority.

Los Angeles is the fiction/drama capital of the entire world. They love a cliffhanger.

We are intellectually starved and anemic
for truth. The body politic is on life support, and like most corporate profiteers, the LA Times is withholding treatment.

            • Lizzie Struthers

LA Times are Obama fellaters. The tape came in an a higher editor put a stop to it to protect his dream boy.

              • Zee

I believe the term is “Obama fluffers.”

It’s encouraging that the McCain campaign is demanding this.

          • oowawa

I think that AnninCa is worried about compromising journalistic integrity if they are forced to reveal their sources. Well, I’m not sure that applies here. The identity of “Deep Throat” was rightfully withheld, but the story itself was not. The L A Times does not have to reveal its sources–just provide the content of what those sources provided. Sources should not be allowed to cherry-pick the content provided to the press. Protect the source? Okay. Protect the information? Not okay.

            • Idiocracy08

I don’t see how it would protect the source. If only a one or a few people have the tape, narrowing down who it could be – then it wouldn’t matter anyway because we know the tape exists.

          • Liz B

            Okay Galt,
If you scroll down through the comments somewhere, I actually did suggest we march on them in protest…
I omitted the torches and pitchforks, but now that you’ve supplanted that idea in my brain, I like it. I think it lends a sort of midieval touch to the process. I also think it would give the appearance of true outrage.

            • Lizzie Struthers

I’m for torches and pitchforks. And we can wear garlic clove necklaces and stuff like that too. We might try to get Uri Geller to come to LA and try to bend their HQ in half.

            • oowawa

I omitted the torches and pitchforks

C’mon Liz, you’re no fun–can we at least shoulder our toilet plungers?

      • ACT

I could not agree more about the imprortance of a free press.
Unfortunatley I know the inside of both the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune. It breaks my heart to tell you that the free press as you knew it does not exist in those news rooms any longer.

A look at the Managing Editors that have FLED both news rooms should be all the evidence you require.

        • AnninCA

          Thank you!

Good Golly, 3 MAJOR news editorial managers have resigned from the LA TIMES just in the past 18 months.

          They walked away.

          You are SO right.

          • bemused

Then if it is no longer a free press, we should lean on them mightily, because they are functioning the opposite of a free press, they are a propaganda machine. You are arguing perhaps for protection of the person who submitted the tape. What if they actually believed it would be played, not reduced to misleading fragments? I think the Times needs to produce news to be credible, and they can think of another excuse.

            • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

No need for all the mental gymnastics. AnninCA is way off here. We have a right under the First Amendment to demand the release of the video. They do not have to comply. End of story.

            • tillthen

Exactly. No one is asking them to shape the information. We are only asking that the information be made public. There is no jeopardy to a journalist here. The only one who is at risk, is Obama, WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR POTUS

              • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

No one is asking them to shape the information.

True but to my main point, we have a right to ask for that or for their editor to appear on national TV naked if we want.

                • bemused

I thought that’s what I said too. :) and also I was arguing for the unknown who purportedly gave them the tape–if it happened, it wasn’t so the LAT could reshape or suppress it. That individual’s right to expression is also being thwarted.

            • DAB

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. They have become Obama protectors and enablers. They are a far cry from what they should be. They no longer expose truth equally — only when they choose to do so. The corruption of the Press is the most scary thing to me in what is becoming an increasingly bizarre scenario.

Ordinarily I would support the Press’ right to confidentiality but they have not kept up their end of the bargain! Who is left to protect us??

              • NOBAMA2

In a way the open hostility being shown by the LA Times at least removes any argument for their horrid bias for Obama.

            • Deep Truths

AnninCA is arguing both sides of the schizophrenic fence. She has take up permanent residence there.

      • Shiloh

        And furthermore:

Freedom of the press means freedom from GOVERNMENT interference. It does not mean freedom from public outrage that a newspaper is intentionally suppressing critical news to protect a candidate. If the NYT and the LAT were indeed dismantled, we would be a lot closer to having a free press than we are today. I don’t hear anyone saying that the LA Times has any legal obligation to release this tape so their “freedom” is not being threatened at all. Let them come out and say they have no obligation or responsibility to report the news they are in possession of and that their freedom is the freedom to mislead the voters and distort the truth. See how that plays.

        • ACT

          AMEN !!

          • WasLNbutNoBamaBotsKeepStealingMyName

I’m in the Amen corner too! AMEN!

        • AnninCA

That would mean something if those “outraged” people actually are even subscribers.

If not, then there is no real consequence.

          Are you a subscriber?

          • Shiloh

Right. No-one but subscribers are subjected to the bias and news suppression of LAT. We never hear in other media that “LAT reported this” or “LAT says that.” If it were only subscribers that were affected by LAT none of us would give a whit since their subscriber base is shrinking every day (for obvious reasons).

        • Andy

          Good points Shiloh !!

The “press” has been a propaganda machine for Obama this election cycle; so the only freedom I see is their freedom to pick, choose and slant feed us propaganda.

      • HARP

When a news organization suppresses a story, that can influence an election, that makes them a 527, not a news outlet.

        • Firefly

Exactly! Plus, I think the LA Times is LYING about “we promised the source we wouldn’t release the tape.”

Last night Greta had a “journalist” on (not LAT, somebody else) and IMO he was making up this excuse on the spot – the “reason” sounds plausible, eh? LAT Times has since run with their brand new shiny “reason.”

The LAT was looking for some plausible excuse to not release the tape – they found it when they thought up the mysterious “source” who “made them promise” not to release the tape.

          I think it’s complete BS.

          • Annie Oakley

It doesn’t make sense. Someone gave them a tape but said don’t release it. We want you to have this information because you’re a newspaper, but we don’t want you to tell anyone. In any case, they gave information. Giving the benefit of the doubt that the source needs protection, what is the point in giving information if the information is protected?

            • Ani

They can certainly protect their source but release the tape. Sounds to me like someone found out the LA Times had a tape. The LAT decided to cover it up cause it looked bad for their candidate — otherwise the tape would have been released with the original story they printed in April.

          • Clara Barton

Why would they give them the tape then ask they not release it? Why would they not have simply shown the tape to 2-3 people so the story could be confirmed and written, but not left the tape in their possession? The LAT is not telling the truth, IMO. They are clearly trying to protect Obama because they know that a visual image is much more potent and easy to disseminate than written word.

      • Sue

Expecting the press to do its job..which means reporting the news fairly..is NOT anything near dismantling the press.

Get real sister. They’re covering for Obama plain and simple and they need to be called out on it.

        Good grief.

      • Idiocracy08

Are you kidding? Did a bot take over your name?

They are withholding the video you obviously do not want to come out. They are here to report the news to us. They are supposed to tell us what’s really going on.

What about our rights? Our rights to know the truth about the man that wants to be Commander In Chief.

How can demanding to see a video they want to keep from the public because they endorsed him, be dismantling the free press?

Your reply was to someone who said that if it were the other way arouund, people would be screaming bloody murder.

Shiloh said that is what the BOTS will do, and that we just need to get the point across that IF the tape were released, it would be devasting. How is that dismantling a free press?

Why am I replying to utter nonsense???

        • kgirl1028

uh oh, somebody didn’t clean up the Obamalaid those Obama Witness brought by this morning, and one of you got a hold of some. Darnit kids how many times do I not to touch that stuff without protective equipment. For a few people it soaks through the skin.

      • Cindy

AnninCa—-They are NOT “free”….They are being held hostage by the Obama camp.

      • Midlife Mama

The so-called free press lost their right to be defended by their horrific performance during this election cycle. They fellated Obama and covered up for him long enough. The outrage against the LA Times is warranted due to this behavior.

        Storm the offices, I say!

        • oowawa

“Midlife Mama” is ready to “storm the offices.” I love it! And former domestic terrorist turned mild-mannered professor William Ayres will no doubt be cowering inside. How the times have changed!

      • barry bums a ciggie

The free press is now Obama’s propaganda arm. If you haven’t noticed that, then you’ve been asleep.

      • Artemis

There is something REALLY strange with AnninCA’s continual criticism of anything that would shed some light on Obama’s real history. Ann, why would you defend the media’s refusal to expose Obama’s history? We know every detail of McCain’s (and Cindy’s due to the NY Times expose on her) – and the herd of investigators that descended on Alaska to dig up any dirt on Palin…I don’t recall you complaining about any of those ploys, but you really cannot stand for any scrutiny to be aimed at Obama. Hmmm….

        • ces

I’ve just reported her to NQ as a possible Troll hijack of the name.

          • AngryWhitePerson

I think we should call the current AnninCa “Legion”…..The He/She/Group/AlienInvader posts 20 different messages on a subject they are trying to “avoid” and most of them are contradictory opinions.

          • oowawa

Maybe AnninCa fell asleep too close to one of those pod thingies. You know, sometimes it’s really difficult to tell the difference. Well, if AnninCA is really an Obot facsimile, she or he is doing a really good job and deserves a medal from the Axis of O.

Seriously, A. is not a bot. Anytime you have this many people communicating with each other, you are going to have a spectrum of opinion, and she has been pretty consistent in speaking for one end of that spectrum. I like consistency and do not like Change with a capital “C”.

        • AnninCA

          *blink*

I posted about that travesty several times.

      • felizarte

The press, these days, have sadly misused the protections guaranteed them in the constitution. In this election cycle, they have failed to inform the citizens so that they could have informed decisions regarding the candidates, especially Obama.

      • NoTrollZone

        boring troll.

      • C.S.

What free press? If they feel constrained to report favorable Obama all the time, negative McCain all the time in spite of the millions (yes, millions) of anti Obama voters they aren’t really “press” but copy readers. Wasn’t it just last week that a reporter was banned from access to the Soertoro/Obama campaign for asking questions of Biden? There’s two instances of suppression of and by the press.

And “the press” has shown no retrain in going after Governor Palin, so why this blackout on Obama even when his skeletons come tumbling out of his closet?

You want your “free press”, then cover them with the Fairness Doctrine where they are free to investigate and report what they are finding and not required to “hold it until after the election”. With a free press we’d know if Soertoro/Obama was a natural born citizen, a Kenyan citizen, and Indonesian citizen, a dual citizen,an illegal alien, and the nature of his long standing relationships with crooks, liars and terrorists. Or is that too much “freedom of the press”?

      • NoTrollZone

Ann is obviously a troll or someone with a fried brain and nowhere else to go. I wish people would ignore her– she never adds anything but a low continual whine to the conversation.

Don’t worry Annie this information will come out the old fashioned way..It will be purchased from one of the newly laid off employees at the LA Times….after all we are a democracy and a capitalistic society…Capitalism rules! Socialism Sucks..Money is generally all that counts.. so don’t worry we WILL get the info the old fashioned way…WE WILL BUY IT.

        • oowawa

Hey American Sawbuck, I appreciate your humor, but I am currently a little low on sawbucks. I hope you have plenty to make the purchase, because if the info is for sale, it is going to cost big-time, far beyond the $25,000-$50,000 figures I have seen mentioned so far. And if it’s really for sale, bidders will include the O-Machine, whose pockets, I hear, are way deep. So do we start watching E-Bay?

          • AMERICAN SAWBUCK

            OOwawa
Fear not..the good guys will end up with this tape ..the only problem is that barry and joe will tax it if it cost more than $250,000…0r was that $200,000 oops I guess I mean $150,000 or whatever the number is today..
Its too hot for EBay…FOX will get it …

        Bye.

      • Concerned Citizen X

There is far too much ballyhooing about “free press”. The press is anything but “free”. It is bought and sold like any other commodity. The only thing about a “free press” that actually holds water is the ability to say whatever you like in print without fear of government retribution. The public has every right to demand the release of the tape. That’s called “free speech” and it’s the right that “free press” is derived from. The LA Times in this instance is simply being irresponsible. Protecting sources isn’t a right. It’s an agreement between the parties involved. The courts were adamant on this with Judith Miller. And sometimes the public interest overrides agreements. This is one such case. In this instance as in many others in this election, the hypocritical, double-standard-mongering, biased media is getting above itself, inventing fake rights to protect sources that don’t exist. The LA Times should release the tape immediately, either to quell unfounded alleggations or to allow the public access to information that will show them conclusively that one of their candidates for president cavorts with anti-semites and terrorists.

      • bev

The problem with AnniefromCa is her pretensions to sensibility and logic. Her reasoning is nothing but a comic farce, which is made more ridiculous by an egotistical belief in her own intellectual superiority.

She among all of us is the most likely to succomb to the kool-aid.

      • Ai1een

What AnninCA DOESN’T choose to say is she is evidently FOR CENSORSHIP IN AMERICA…that is what the LA Times is engaging in – censorship of information that the American public DESERVES AND HAS A RIGHT to know. That’s where the free speeches comes in as well…

    • Typewriterstreaming

You are right Shiloh. Farce and a half what Obama gets away with.

    • NoTrollZone

Good point Shiloh about the tape. As to the
protest if it had been McCain doing something like Obama has here…. good god, it would be defeaning.
And forget about the protest… the amount of death threats would be staggering. Also every piece of personal information on the reporter and on the LA Times editorial board would be plastered across the internet. Obots would be standing outside reporters and editors homes chanting creepy sayings and being verbally abusive. Why the din would never stop. And of course the LA Times would be branded as a racist organization.

Too bad no one on either the NY or LA Times has a brain. They still are complicit in the Obama scam.
Even though they know damn well how Obama treats any free media. Stupid, irresponsible people.

Lordy! And the day’s just started.

McCain campaign accuses L.A. Times of ‘suppressing’ Obama video

The Times says its promise to a source prevents the paper from posting the video, which shows Barack Obama praising Palestinian activist Rashid Khalidi at a 2003 banquet. The story first appeared in April.

        By a Times staff writer

        October 29, 2008

John McCain’s presidential campaign Tuesday accused the Los Angeles Times of “intentionally suppressing” a videotape it obtained of a 2003 banquet where then-state Sen. Barack Obama spoke of his friendship with Rashid Khalidi, a leading Palestinian scholar and activist.

The Times first reported on the videotape in an April 2008 story <http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-obamamideast10apr10,0,5826085.story > about Obama’s ties with Palestinians and Jews as he navigated the politics of Chicago. The report included a detailed description of the tape, but the newspaper did not make the video public.

“A major news organization is intentionally suppressing information that could provide a clearer link between Barack Obama and Rashid Khalidi,” said McCain campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb. ” . . . The election is one week away, and it’s unfortunate that the press so obviously favors Barack Obama that this campaign must publicly request that the Los Angeles Times do its job — make information public.”

The Times on Tuesday issued a statement about its decision not to post the tape.

“The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it,” said the newspaper’s editor, Russ Stanton. “The Times keeps its promises to sources.”

Jamie Gold, the newspaper’s readers’ representative, said in a statement: “More than six months ago the Los Angeles Times published a detailed account of the events shown on the videotape. The Times is not suppressing anything. Just the opposite — the L.A. Times brought the matter to light.”

The original article said that Obama’s friendships with Palestinian Americans in Chicago and his presence at Palestinian community events had led some to think he was sympathetic to the Palestinian viewpoint on Middle East politics. Obama publicly expresses a pro-Israel viewpoint that pleases many Jewish leaders.

In reporting on Obama’s presence at the dinner for Khalidi, the article noted that some speakers expressed anger at Israel and at U.S. foreign policy, but that Obama in his comments called for finding common ground.

It said that Khalidi in the 1970s often spoke to reporters on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Khalidi later lived near Obama while teaching at the University of Chicago. He is now a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University in New York.

The LA Times has a duty to this country to release the tape. For gosh sakes, trust that the American people can make up their own minds!

Journalists do not have to reveal their sources. If the source is revealed in the tape, the tape should be edited to, in effect, “redact” the source. No one is asserted the “free press” be “dismantled.”

    • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

The press has already been bought and dismantled. It is no longer “free.”

      • AnninCA

The press has never been “free.”

        Good gravy…..

        • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

          You said it was:

I think you have no clue that you’re talking about dismantling a free press

I put the “free” in quotes as not to confuse with my “bought” comment. “free” meaning able to exercise an action without government interference, in this case.

          • AnninCA

            OK, galt……

Here’s a simple thing to remember. The press is free enterprise.

            People PAY for the press.

It isn’t some entity out there which just exists for nothing.

Go back in history. Boosterism for the West was a huge influx of money. Write stories plugging the “beauty and attraction” of the West….get advertisers.

The press isn’t free in any sense that I see posted here. It is a business.

            End of story.

It relies upon subscribers, advertisers, and money from other sources.

To think otherwise is, honestly, just indicative that you have no real sense of the history of journalism in our country.

Even this blog is clearly commercial.

            So is Huffington Post.

            So is Talk Left.

            So is Taylor Marsh.

This notion that there is some kind of wonderful press out there who will report what you think is “FAIR” and no need money…..

            Doesn’t exist.

            That’s fantasy thinking.

            • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

The LA times is the pits its is there duty to release this tape, by holding it back just makes one feel there is more on it that what they are saying.

If according to them its no big deal well then release it and let us all judge for ourselves, am sure we are all intelligent enough to do that.

Maybe there is a spot where Obama has some kind words for Jews and Israel, maybe there is a spot where Obama is sitting with Ayres and his wife, and since he did not know him well that should not be a problem.

Maybe Obama in his speech shared his own views on how he felt Israel should be handled, who knows what is on this tape they only way we will find out is by showing it, if the LA times so want to support Obama they should release because at this point we can think anything as to why they are hiding this tape.

  • Dad

Why is Fox news the only one covering this story? Obama stands a good chance of becoming the leader of the FREE world and there is no mention of this by the MSM. The people on this site seem to have a way of getting things done. What is your plan? How can I help?

  • SJ

My conclusion is that there must be some kind of damaging evidence on this tape against Obama and they do not want to be the media house that sunk his boat.

    • Liz B

Then they should forward it over to Fox. I think Fox would be okay with being the media house that sunk the Obama boat.

  • melisa

I would appeal to the La times through multiple mailings and emails, as well as phone calls, to plead with them to release this tape. It is important that this country is fully informed.
Interestingly, what I have noted is that the press in general will create stories from whole cloth, yet are hesitant to simply play a video that is in the canidates own words. This is very suspect.

What a joke! We should respect the sanctity of the press when they trample notions of ethics, integrity, and justice? Give me a break! Based on recent performances, asking the LA Times for that tape is a no-brainer, and it might just be an opportunity for the fourth estate to redeem itself. J

Excuse me, the press has a RIGHT to inform the people of newsworthy stories. This is relevant and newsworthy. I think you have this backwards.

        • Pennsylvania Red

You are trampling on freedom of the press rights.

So funny. Nobody’s trampling on anything. Whatever happened to “all the news that’s fit to print”? See what happened to that storied newsrag – its stock is now enjoying junk bond status.

It’s not about “freedom of the press rights”.

It’s about providing RELEVANT information that will INFORM the voting public. And, from a business standpoint, it’s about the LA Times’ desire to remain viable as a business entity.

So they can honor their DUTY as journalists, and also give their prospective readers a reason to buy their newsrag, and thereby ensure their own survival into the next fiscal quarter.

      • cat

You ALL can agree to disagree with me.

I will never agree with you. That’s OK.

What I hoped for this thread, honestly, was a discussion about the dangers of the Obama methodology.

I think it puts people into the position of being challenged to defend their right to view reality.

          I think it’s highly dysfunctional.

Alas, nobody seems to want to discuss that.

It’s all about some hope for an October surprise “moment.”

John is closing well. He doesn’t need some crazy October surprise.

What he does need is a lot more people feeling comfortable that their perception of the flip-flops, the issues with Obama’s walk versus the talk, and their OWN grip on reality……is actually quite adequate.

          They’ll vote McCain.

      • Shiloh

And again, you have a warped notion of what freedom of the press is about. When the press may not be criticized for what they do and don’t do, there really is a trampling of rights going on it but isn’t about the press.

LAT has a legal right to bury the tape. We have every right in response to scream in outrage and do everything we can to bring that rag to its knees!

      • KarenG

Isn’t it true that you have the right to protect your source. We are not asking for their source,
just the tape. There is no reason for protecting the tape…only the source.

      • wodiej

YOU ARE SKATING ON THIN ICE-we are no better than the Bots for Obama?? You may think it is perfectly ok what the media and press is doing but we don’t. I thought the press was supposed to report all of the news not just the parts they like! That is not “free press” that is biased press.

        • requiredreading

I think the point that AnninCa doesn’t get (and won’t ever, if she keeps up her ridiculous “Fine, but I’m right and you’re wrong” attitude, which is strange for someone who says she wants “conversation”) is that the L.A. Times suppression IS the Obama methodology. That methodology is clear: They can break the rules and use any strategy they damn well please with the media and anything else and get away with it, and then they express outrage in terms of “rights,” “justice,” “morality,” and “legality,” whenever anyone considered to be an opponent tries to do ANYTHING – even things that are “right,” “just,” “moral,” and “legal.” But what’s the use of conversing with anyone who sigsn off with “I’m right and you’re wrong”?

          • Annie Oakley

Yes, there seems to be a monopoly on the public square in this election, and it fits Obama’s method of “community” organizing and consolidating power to get his business done. It is our need as a democracy to know what business he has in mind.

AnninCa is referring to the adage that freedom of the press belongs to those who own a press, or in this day owning a television network is more to the point.

Nonetheless, democracy depends on a free debate. Thus, the power of the press has often been abused, but it was not as much an issue before it became such a monopoly. Capitalism limits monopolies because it represents a decayed state that no longer if for the greater good, in that case competition. The same is true with our media. It no longer represents the greater good, in this case the need for free exchange of information in a democracy.

            • AnninCA

Good post….but breaking up monopolies is always a struggle.

To this day, the press promoted a picture of Jesse James which, is, in fact false.

              It was a hot topic.

My entire point about the press is that it’s free, and that means…..we have to accept that it’s not always fair.

Fair is in Pomona. (local reference here)

This obsession with making everything fair is actually not democracy.

I personally think…..let it flow. Nutcases about birth certificates to Sarah’s effigy in West Hollywood.

              Let it flow.

              That’s Democracy.

              We’ve never been particularly “pretty.”

              That’s our beauty.

      • felizarte

In the same token, Annin, why don’t you just leave people alone to express their opinions, thoughts. Freedom of speech and expression, remember? How about the same attitude towards all inalienable rights under the constitution? Don’t you think that’s a bit hypocritical on your part?

      • Ani

I have to say, AnninCA, I have been following your arguments and posts on various threads and find your logic a little confusing.

Free press is about expressing itself — not withholding valuable information from a public that has to make one of the most important decisions it can make.

That is not freedom of the press, that is gaming the system for their favorite candidate. LA Times is owned by Sam Zell — big Obama supporter — so much for the freedom of the press — he is also on the board of AP — the same crooks who put out the false story that Hillary was conceding the morning of June 3rd — while 2 states were JUST going to the polls.

I called AP’s district offices in 3 states — I also called a government regulatory agency — they basically said that no one could touch them for printing lies.

Is that freedom of the press, too?

And now they have freedom to withhold valuable info just as newspapers did in advance of the 2004 election which helped Bush.

What in the hell is the press there for if not to tell us the truth? The whole truth and nothing but the truth so help them God?

You are making an argument I cannot follow.

The media has been ridiculously biased this entire election season and as a Hillary supporter, you as much as anyone must be aware of that.

Even reporters like CNN’s John King, people at ABC, MSNBC and CNN are now admitting this — it means they have been LYING — we have a right to hold them accountable for misleading and withholding crucial information from the Americna people. These are not smears or someone’s private business -these are important political issues, unlike what the NYT chose to print about Cindy McCain last week — though she is not running for anything.

Free press? Freedom of the press?

More like freedom to bamboozle the American people.

Where are their ethics? Or perhaps you are defending their right to have none — and to get paid for having none and to have us buy their product and keep them in business when they have no ethics.

I prefer to protest and boycott.

        • Annie Oakley

That is exactly what she is defending, their right to have no ethics, or as Tony Soprano would say, “Hey, it’s just business.” Yes, we know, business has no ethic except profit. But you raise an interesting point: fraud. In this case, the media has perpetrated a fraud on the voters.

There are plenty of limitations of free speech. If I call for the death of a candidate, I can be arrested by the secret service. If I sell cigarettes as health aids, I will be shut down. But if I systematically trash the better candidate and deprive the voters of the information they need to give their consent in a representative democracy? Well, that is a greater harm to the public, yet no one seems to care.

Any newspaper that withholds facts and information because it just feels like it, doesn’t warrant any empathy from me. Screw ‘em. Hope they go down in flames.

Yesterday I read that ABC News has cut out all print subscriptions for its division’s employees, and no holiday parties or trade functions. Today, I read that TIME Magazine will eliminate 600 jobs starting in about two weeks. Newspapers around the U.S. with even more limited budgets are cutting back each year on editorial to save money. Why? Cause fewer and fewer people are watching and reading “the free press” owned by corporate conglomerates.

To counteract, Obama BUYS media time to get in our faces and bombard us with lies, rhetoric and hypnotism. But who wants to come home tonight from a long day of work or school, or start a night shift with Obama on all the fucking networks??? Does that seem like a good idea? NO. Does it really matter if the tape is released or not? Unless Obama is on the tape cursing America and saying he’s a muslim (or supports the regimes in the Middle East) this tape isn’t going to do anything. The whole ‘he’s a muslim’ thing hasn’t been working anyway, especially since everybody knows about Rev. Wright. Mccain needs to move on from that and find something else to stick to Obama or another way to counteract him. The guilt by association tactic doesn’t work with Obama, so unless he can find a tape of Obama himself saying something Mccain needs to leave it alone and concentrate on more important things. Time is running out. I’d say his time would be better spent in getting more Republicans to vote than trying to release a tape of Obama at someone’s going away party.

    • wodiej

does it really matter to you that there was hate speech against Jewish people at this gathering? That Obama was in the company of a terrorist and other unsavory people?

      • Cindy

Yes it matters to me, but I don’t think it’s going to matter to the general public unless Obama himself said something. If Wright, Ayers, and Rezko couldn’t stick what makes you think this guy will? Rev. Wright cursed America about 9/11, and Obama still won the primary and is still popular. If this tape comes out and only this Khalidi guy is making the hate speech, then the blame won’t stick to Obama. Obama will say that he doesn’t support his views, or it’ll turn out that Khalidi has mended his ways or has some Jewish friends that will back him up about what a great guy he is. And a lot of people will buy, just like they did during the Wright thing. Turning out voters is more important than going on and on about how Obama is a muslim. If it was working, I wouldn’t care, but it’s not, so Mccain needs to drop it and find something else.

        • Kathy

Obama LOST most of the primaries after the Wright tape came out. Problem was too many primaries and caucus frauds had been held before the tape was released. That and the DNC cheating…

          • Cindy

In the end, Obama still got the nomination, and general sentiment did not turn against him. He still has strong support from the Democrats as far as I can see, and enough of the general public see him favorably so the Rev. Wright tape didn’t hurt him like it should have. If it had, he would have had to withdraw from the race back then and numbers would be as strong as they are now. Mccain should be winning in a landslide against him, but instead the race is actually close. I’ll never understand how that tape didn’t put the final nail in his coffin. Any other politician would have had to step down after that tape, but somehow Obama avoided it.

            • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

Mccain should be winning in a landslide against him

Its the other way around. The Dems should be winning this in a landslide, yet it is close.

            • Wisewoman

Cindy. Obama is leading in the lying polls just as he “led” in these same polls then lost many state primaries to Hillary (NH, CA, TX, IN, SD to name a few). Mccain is struggling for one reason only and that is due to the recent economic melt down so close to voting on Nov 4. Otherwise McCain would be leading by double digits. The irony of the situation is that the country might elect the one person in the whole US who is most to blame for the economic disaster set in motion by the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage fiasco in which Obama and the dems are mostly to blame. Thanks to your “free press” the average voter is not aware of this fact. See links below:

      • Cindy

If Obama didn’t directly say something, it won’t be enough. Stories have already been spread with no effect to the people that matter (as far as I can see judging by the polls and general sentiment). It’ll take more than that, which is why Mccain should drop it and concentrate on more important things.

If Obama didn’t directly say something, it won’t be enough.

Don’t you just ‘Hope’ that’s true, your master just can’t be that bad, can he?

          Use your Brain
          Vote McCain!

          • Cindy

I’m already voting Mccain. Maybe if you used your brain and read what I’ve written you’d know that. I ‘hope’ you can read, but I’m beginning to think that might be to much to ask.

            • McHope

You can say that all you want, but all you’ve really managed to convey is that you believe you can decide what is or is not important to others.
And the ‘Use your brain, Vote McCain’ is a slogan, not an insult, unless YOU feel you’re not exercising your own intelligence.

        • felizarte

Typical Obama tactic, tell the opposition to stop doing whatever is effective against Obama e.g.: Palin is a drag (because she connects well with people and has energized the base) Drop Wright, Rezko, Ayers, Acorn talk (they cast doubt on Obama’s character) Attack Joe the Plumber because through no fault of Joe, Obama got to say something straight from his heart that revealed what is really going on with his thinking process all along which he had successfully obscured.

          Game’s up. You lose!

          • Cindy

Yeah, I lose. I’ll go and report that to my master Obama right now. Oh wait, it seems I forgot that I don’t like Obama and won’t be voting for him. Silly me.

I’m reminded again of why most sane minded Americans avoid political blogs. One little statement that isn’t in lock-step with the rest of the group and suddenly you’re supporting the other side or you’re not a ‘true believer.’ Put the tape out there if you think it’ll help, but don’t get pissed off if Obama manages to avoid it once again or if he tries to turn it on Mccain. I’ll try to stop myself from posting from now on since I’ve crossed over to the dark side and become an Obama supporter. I may need that early voting ballot back since I think in my delusion, I may have chosen Mccain.

        • csuzeq

Well, if there were anti jewish statements or slurs, and Obama just sat there with his cheshire cat cmile, I think that is just as damning as if he said things himself.

    • McHope

Oh please. Enough with the obama talking points. STOP telling other people what they do and do not care about. If this man who seeks to serve this nation, once again, sat in a room full of people while they profess a profound hate of America or it’s allies, the public deserves to SEE it.

People do care if their President has the best interest of the country at heart and seeing with their own eyes is different than reading about it.

Just so you’re clear, Republicans do not own this tape- a very liberal news organization does. AND while you’re at it- stop blaming Republicans for everything Obama does himself.

      • AnninCA

I ask again. Why is there only one tape?

        That makes no sense.

        • McHope

Are you implying the LA Times lied in their original story?
I’m sure there is not only one tape. But there has only been one tape reported on thus far.

I know, let’s ask Ayers to give up his home video of the event.

      • Tj

This is how they are trying to make you believe you dont care. They even said “The American people do not want to hear about this.” To the fox comentators this AM. If they say it enough you just might start believing it and stop asking.

      • Cindy

Why don’t you stop assuming what someone is saying. I haven’t blamed Republicans for anything. Maybe you’re the one who’s blaming them since you seem so eager to put it on someone else. I’m not rehashing any Obama talking points or telling people what they do/don’t care about.

I’m saying that this tape isn’t going to sway voters away from Obama unless Obama himself did or said something. If the Rev. Wright tape (with all the cursing and damning America about 9/11) couldn’t stop him, what makes you think this will? Time is running out and Mccain needs to be concentrating on something that will actually work rather than a losing strategy. By now, they should be able to see that ‘guilt by association’ doesn’t work on Obama. We need to convince Republican voters to come out in huge numbers. That’ll probably work better than the same ‘Obama is a Muslim’ or ‘Obama knows a terrorist’ strategy that we’ve been using since the beginning (and which I might add, hasn’t been working).

        • McHope

Hey, how about Republicans come out and vote AND people learn the truth about Obama, too.

          What a concept.

Do you consider yourself some kind of campaign strategist? You say the exact things all Obama surrogates say. Don’t worry about anything Obama says or does because the voters don’t care about that.

If you don’t think Republicans vote in large numbers, you should be fired from the Obama campaign.

For the last time, it may not bother you if the POTUS sympathizes with terrorists, and has an extremely naive foreign policy to boot, but it just might matter to others. You do not get to decide what other people consider important.

          • Cindy

For the last time, it may not occur to you that every Mccain supporter doesn’t think the same way, but you don’t get to decide what I or any other supporter should say. I don’t know nor do I care what Obama supporters are saying (I try not to raise my blood pressure by going to their websites if I can help it.) And as I said in a previous post, I do care about what Obama does and who he associates with, I just don’t think the general public will care in this instance. Wright, Rezko, and Ayers didn’t stick, and I don’t think this guy will either. He’s just another association like Ayers, and that strategy didn’t work last time. If it had, I’d have no problem with them going after this tape and devoting time/energy to getting it.

I didn’t say the tape should be buried and never released, just that I don’t think it’ll make a difference and Mccain’s time would be better spent somewhere else. I never said Republicans don’t vote. I pointed out that it would be better for Mccain to focus on getting Republicans out to vote (and those Dems and undecideds who would be willing to vote for a Republican.) Or finding something else that’s incriminating that Obama himself said. And no I’m not a strategist. Like you, I’m just a regular, everyday smart ass who thinks I know everything.

  • Objective Analysis

What happen to using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or urge release under national security?

Keep the pressure, it will get released. I hear the Obama Campaign is squirming b/c after that the Rev. wright (in the church) and whitey racist rant tapes will come out for the grand finale….

    • Kathy

Let’s bombard the Obama camp with emails asking that he tell the LATimes to release the video. After all, he can’t have anything to hide can he?

    • Terry

FOIA applies to the government – it cannot be used against a private entity, like a corporation.

The LA Times obviously lacks journalistic integrity – we’ve seen a lot of that this year.

  • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Anninca…What a joke. The “free press” made up stories about Palin and her special needs child. They assaulted her, Hillary, Joe the Plumber, etc. and have reported unethically, dishonestly and amorally through this entire race. “Free press” would mean unbiased, unfiltered truth, not the continual lies by the MSM that we get. This is an important race that determined whether America survives as we know it. I find it deplorable that anyone would feel that the MSM has done their jobs this year. And it’s Pelosi and her band of thugs who want the Fairness Doctrine that would stop us from doing what we are doing here and now. Give me a break. We are just asking for fairness and ethical reporting. If this were a McCain tape the Obots would be screaming racism if the LA Times hung on to it. What a load of crap. Ann, you can be a little annoying and seemingly in the Obama tank.

    • AnninCA

So who promised you life was fair, hon?

You guys mix this up a lot.

      • kgirl1028

The only fairness in life is what you create for others.

      • Idiocracy08

so why are you complaining about us complaining about the LAT not releasing the tape?

        life ain’t fair!

        You guys

So now we’re “you guys”? That tells me a lot. Either you’re now (or always were) a bot, or someone did steal your name.

      • Buzz Latte

There’s a few markers that punctuate AnninCA’s posts. Smug. Condescending, Arrogant. Intolerant. Limiting. Negating. Holier than thou. KIA (know it all). You get the picture.

Ann you were probably a perfect match for the banking industry.

Part of democracy is tolerance and belief that people will strive to do their best. It’s the premise that gets us into the mess we’re in with socialist Obama. Some, like Obama, take advantage of situations. Hence, the NPD armchair diagnosis may not be so far off

Tolerance for where people are in their learning process is needed here.

Can you wrap your head around that, AnninCA?

    • Just Sayin’

Sounds like a witch hunt to me. Cindy and Anni, you’d better run for your lives because you’re about to be burned at the stake if you don’t agree with the pack :-)

It doesn’t matter if they release the video or not. It’s nothing. Khalidi is hardly an al-Qaeda sympathizer or a terrorist. He’s a highly respected scholar and a compelling intellect. Give it a rest. This isn’t the October Surprise we were hoping for. It won’t make any difference at all. Save the ire and outrage for something real.

    • HARP

In this video interview, Sutton says he first heard of Obama about twenty years ago from Khalid Al-Mansour, who Sutton described as advisor to “one of the world’s richest men,” Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

Prince Alwaleed catapulted to fame in the United States after the September 11 attacks, when New York mayor Rudy Guiliani refused his $10 million check to help rebuild Manhattan, because the Saudi prince hinted publicly that America’s pro-Israel policies were to blame for the attacks.

Sutton knew Al-Mansour well, since the two men had been business partners and served on several corporate boards together.

As Sutton remembered, Al-Mansour was raising money for Obama’s education and seeking recommendations for him to attend Harvard Law School.

“I was introduced to (Obama) by a friend who was raising money for him,” Sutton told NY1 city hall reporter Dominic Carter. “The friend’s name is Dr. Khalid al-Mansour, from Texas.”

Apparently, al-Mansour serves on the Board of, among others, Saudi African Bank and was responsible for the Africa investment activities of Kingdom Holdings, Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal’s investment company.

The L.A. Times has claimed that they received the tape on condition that they would not release it. Of course, we don’t know if that is true, but it does give them a justification for withholding the tape.

As to Freedom of the Press, I am totally against any GOVERNMENT action to restrict, coerce or intimidate the free flow of ideas. Those of us who are not part of government are free, consistent with Freedom of Speech, to try to impose consequences on those who excercise their rights in a way we find objectionable. Remember our outrage at the MSNBC reporter who said that Hillary was “pimping Chelsea”?

So, please, everyone, put the heat on the L.A. Times. Not because they will release the tape, which they won’t, but so this story gets some more coverage in the media. Let people imaginge what is on the tape that is being withheld.

    • Kristen

      Exactly JJ,
All this does is reinforce the truth that the media is biased for Obama to win. All that does is pi$$ people off. I’d love the tape to come out but even if it doesn’t it just looks like the media is once again covering for Obama. And everyone can IMAGINE what is SOOOOO bad that LAT has to cover for him. Either way is good news for the McCain camp. IMO

Folks, do not worry about the 1/2 hour infomercial tonight. There has been one continuous infomercial on MSNBC for the last 6 months. What one more half hour?

    • AnninCA

      I agree. I watched Hillary’s bought program.

      It was way flat.

      • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

You made some provocative statements and seem to have walked away from them. Why is that?

I can see I need to avoid this story.

That’s fine its your right to say that.

Folks, the public can’t bully the rights of the press anymore than the government should be allowed to do so.

It is our right under the same First Amendment to demand they release the video. You can characterize it as bullying but it is our right. And the LA Times does not have to comply with any demands. No one is suggesting we march on the times brandishing torches and pitchforks.

I’m once again in the minority here.

I think you have no clue that you’re talking about dismantling a free press.

For good reason you are in the minority. Your argument makes no sense and is hypocritical. On the one hand you are concerned about “dismantling a free press” and on the other you are calling our right to free speech bullying.

That…..I’ll never go with you on.

        Never.

And we will never censor ourselves to please your misplaced and illogical sense of ideology.

        • AnninCA

          That’s Ok by me.

          I was simply stating….I disagree.

I am far, far more interested in making sure I support the principles of a free democracy than any candidate or election cycle.

There are principles more important than winning, to me.

          • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

I am far, far more interested in making sure I support the principles of a free democracy than any candidate or election cycle.

Then don’t say we are bullying to demand something. That is a liberty you need to protect as well. The free press and our right to criticize them or even make demands of them are all protected rights.

I’m beginning to think the only professional journalists left in this country are those college kids at Palestra.net. At least they are willing to do real investigative reports unlike the current nerfball media types who claim to be professionals.

    • AnninCA

The economy has decimated this industry. I guess the internet has also undermined the industry.

      • wac for hillary

The main thing that has decimated this industry is the lack of journalistic integrity and its takeover by the corporate world and the entertainment industry. Journalism should be to inform regardless of the consequences, not to entertain or create “stars” instead of reporters.

        • AnninCA

Well, I don’t have a real answer. People like you claim to want a return of objective journalism.

but then I read story after story where people are “thrilled” when some idiot screams at another person and talks over them, all in the name of “tough journalism.”

So I’m not sure I buy that people are interested in objective journalism.

I keep suggesting…..read JAY COST from RCP.

          He’s a quientensial objective guy.

I’ve yet to receive a post back agreeing with me or even anyone who bothered to go check him out.

I think this blog represents the same thing as Huffington Post, except the opinions are flipped.

          Drama….intrigue……drama…..

          • wac for hillary

“People like you”? Number one–you don’t know me, so don’t try putting me in the category of being “thrilled” with the screamers. I don’t like reporters who ask questions and then don’t allow the person they are interviewing to answer the question. I also don’t like the interviewee to try to prevent the reporter from making his/her point by talking over them. Number two–I don’t know how many other people want objective journalism; I only know I do.

Our media should not be in the business of electing candidates; they should be in the business of giving the voters (all of them) the factual information they need to make a reasonable decision.

If my opinion is too idealistic for you, so what. I only know if our media doesn’t get its act together, the people will never rule, the special interests will.

          • shadow

Then why are you here and posting so much?

  • DancingOpossum

Shiloh, I’ve been a Hillary supporter and posting here longer than you have, I would. Your calling me an Obot because I don’t happen to fall for every hysterical screeching new conspiracy theory is well, it’s interesting. Almost Obamafanesque, I would say.

As for Ayers, there is enough proof without this tape that he and Obama were close friends and worked very closely together, and that Obama has lied about it repeatedly. That the press is ignoring THAT is what’s truly troubling. The evidence is out there and could not be clearer yet nobody dares to bring it up. THAT is what we should be demanding coverage of, not some snoozy tape where Obama gives a speech about some college professor.

  • sassy

Uppity, my answer to your question is a resounding NO!
BO’s pot of stew would foul up a hog pen!
If it’s not BOTS, it’s infiltrators! They think they are under the radar, but I’m not buying their slant!
The press in this country has an obligation to the public!
They have protections, as do public officials…but both should put their moral responsiblity to work for the country!
Otherwise, we will receive only “tabloid” regurjitation, while the major issues go unreported!

  • Pragmatist

    Anninca:

There is nothing wrong with people wanting to see this video (as long as it is authentic); I also agree with you regarding the other comments you made about people seeing that Obama’s methodologies are bad for America and then (hopefully) voting for McCain. We CAN walk and chew gum at the same time!

    McCain/Palin 2008!

    • AnninCA

I know……I just also understand that if a journalist promised not to release the tape or the source from his/her source, that’s his right.

The information is in the article.

So, although I disagree with nearly 90% of the LA TIMES on this election, I stand by this journalist.

It’s just a freedom of press deal with me.

I don’t mind everyone disagreeing with me.

I’m just stubborn enough to ignore you all.

The press has that right. That IS freedom of the press.

      Take that away?

You truly are talking about a facist state.

I don’t think we’re remotely close to fascism. We’re not remotely close to socialism.

In my opinion, just me, speaking for me, we are so incredibly Democratic it’s in our bones.

This country is truly safe in that regard.

      We are most definitely……democratic.

We just don’t tolerate attacks on those who disagree except to whine.

To me? This business with LA Times is a “whine” story. People want some “knock-out” video that will defeat Obama, nevermind the freedom of the press issues.

I disagree. What is obvious to me, anyway, is that I can disagree.

I appreciate that immensely. There are so many parts of our global world where that’s not the case.

      We CAN disagree.

And that is worth protecting, to me.

      • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

Making a mountain out of a mole hill here. We have a right under the First Amendment to demand the release of the video. They do not have to comply. End of story.

Reason we can’t release it is because statements Obama said to rile audience up during toast. He congratulates Khalidi for his work saying “Israel has no God-given right to occupy Palestine” plus there’s been “genocide against the Palestinian people by Israelis.”

It would be really controversial if it got out. Tha’s why they will not even let a transcript get out.

This is exactly what I was thinking there something on this tape that they are hiding.

    Doug Ross:

RED ALERT Tip: Two quotes from the Obama-Khalidi videotape

You know the videotape that shows Barack Obama toasting PLO terrorist Rashid Khalidi? The one that the Los Angeles Times refuses to release?

“The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it,” said the newspaper’s editor, Russ Stanton…

How frickin’ stupid do they think we are? Someone gave the Times a videotape so it wouldn’t be released? And they can’t publish a transcript?

I guess that’s the kind of executive talent the newspaper business is attracting these days.

However, I received a tip from a person who has provided useful, accurate and unique data from LA before (e.g., “All six of CNN’s ‘undecided voters’ were Democratic operatives”). Take it for what it’s worth, but I believe this person is on target.

Saw a clip from the tape.

I’m really getting sick of the anti-Muslim, anti-Arab bigotry that gets expressed here on a regular basis. We are all opposed to Obama and there are many MANY good reasons to oppose him. Let’s not let our various forms of worship divide us. ONe thing you have to realize is that the biggest difference between our two parties are that we interpret the constitution different. So even though i did heckle Annie CA evidently she interprets freedom of the press differntly than I do. Just like Methodist sprinkle and baptist believe in submersion. If we focus on what we do have in common and leave out the particulars it works out better that way. My Aunts morman i’m advenstist I believe that people go to sleep when they die she believes they die to the Celestrial Kingdom. Let’s not get hung up on small stuff. Ok.

I wouldn’t let Billy Ayers, Rashid Khalidi, Reverend Wright, Khalid Al Monsour, Tony Rezko, etc. PET MY FRIGGING DOG. But OHitler will put them all in the WHITE HOUSE. Can you IMAGINE Wright and Pfleger delivering the Sunday morning sermons on the White House lawn while Jayzee sings “99 Problems But A Bitch Ain’t One?” This is a load of crap.

I am no less angry about the supposed suppression of tapes by the McCain campaign. If that fraud wins the election, and the public has been denied the truth about Meshell, and others, along with the Wright controversy, because McCain wants to play ‘nice guy’, I will despise him as much as Obama for what he is potentially doing to our country. It serves no one but himself.

    • Firefly

The RNC, the NRA and many of the 527s are rolling in dough.

My question: why aren’t they releasing this stuff either?

      • Ani

        Uh, the race card.

I am sure they are walking a very fine line here especially with the media 90% in the tank for Obama. Perhaps they are worried these attacks might backfire and make people run to protect Obie.

They are also counting on the support of crossover Dems — if Republs play dirty as theyhave in the past, that may make people feel like — oh, more of the same and not vote for Mac.

        Just a possibility…

  • DanNY

I wonder how many papers will be left if they don’t start getting the truth out in their newspaper. Every person who ever got the LA Times should be canceling subscriptions now if Obama is going to be protected from himself by the “free press” what a crock!

  • DaddysDarlin

How long do we have to tip-toe around Obama? I doubt the MSM are afraid of being called racist for releasing a tape that is news, why aren’t the MSM reporting the news that concerns Obama?
If this man and his corrupt relationships aren’t enough to get the MSM interested in a big story, then nothing will get the MSM off their asses and report the news.
Anything that has to do with Obama that reports on his life and his associations is off limits as far as the MSM is concerned, why?
I thought they took some kind of oath to report the news, all news, good and bad, yet they have passed over stories about Obama that could have made their careers.
Why in the hell are they so afraid of this man? Do they think they might wind up dead like some of Obama’s critics have? No reporting on that either.
I am not afraid of Obama, this 51 year old grandma will take him on, if they let anyone with a dissenting opinion anywhere near him.
I am a lifelong democrat no more, I will try my best as a voter to save our country from the corrupt administration that Obama and his thugs would bring our country.
I am ashamed of the corruption in the DNC that followed Obama and his money without considering the American people or our votes.
In Indianapolis there are more registered voters than there are people, yes Obama has started busing in people to early vote that don’t even belong in those battleground states. Yes Acorn has provided Obama with more registered pets, dead people, and phony names than there are people in our country, and that is how you would want a president to win?
I am appalled at our voting system, it is made to be corrupted. You think those votes for McCain will be counted honestly and fairly electronically?
If there is a way to corrupt our voting system further you can bet Obama and his thugs have already thought of it and are enacting them as I write.
One person, One vote, no more fraudulent caucus’s and primaries. Just one person, one vote. Let them try to corrupt that. How about showing some identification when we vote? Is that so outrageous? Is it racist?
No, its just fair and Obama doesnt speak that language and never will. God save us.

    • DanNY

They’re not affraid – they are saving up the story’s until he’s in office. Then the SHIT will hit the fan! That’s the way the corporate media likes it – nice and messy!

John McCain – not so messy. He’ll actually get to work on making America a better place and to the media that is equal to not having a source for the story.

Here’s a link that has one source claingin to know about at least one incriminating Obama quote from the LATimes’ tape.

    quote:
The reason they can’t release it is because statements Obama said to rile audience up during toast. He congratulates Khalidi for his work saying “Israel has no God-given right to occupy Palestine” plus there’s been “genocide against the Palestinian people by Israelis.”

    http://www.directorblue.blogspot.com

    • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

For obvious reasons we should question those quotes as being authentic. With all the mud being slung from Der Precious’ side all these months, it is no surprise someone would take advantage of the LA Times refusal and release those quotes, even if they made them up. I am not condoning this type of behavior and I also have no idea whether or not this is a smear attempt.

You need to examine this more closely. He was apparently the unpaid chair of their voluntary board. They gave out many grants. If this is the best the Oborgbots can dig up to practice their usual moral relativism, it won’t fly. The story of the withheld video with alleged disparaging things being said against Israel with Obama there, is far more powerful than a line item on a list of grantees. And remember, this being dug up shows the bots are on the defensive and it keeps the overall story alive.

      • ddd342

Yeah it’s so tenuous. Kind of like giving a grant to Acorn or serving on the board with a 60′s radical.

If Khaladi is as bad as everybody says, McCain headed a BOARD THAT GAVE MONEY TO PALI TERRORISTS AND ARAFAT (one in the same).

        • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

This line item is an attempted distraction and as I said, all it does is keep the story of the video alive. Remember, the people deciding the election don’t dice things up into such fine details. All they will care about is “Liberal news paper withholding video.” Der Precious is clearly on the defense here. I think bloggers tend to forget the electorate does not behave as they may wish they should.

      • McHope

Obama and Ayers gave money to Khaladi through the Woods Fund.

In 2001, the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit that describes itself as a group helping the disadvantaged, provided a $40,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, for which Khalidi’s wife, Mona, serves as president. The Fund provided a second grant to the AAAN for $35,000 in 2002.

Has anyone seen this about API-FOX??

    From their site today 10/29—-

    http://tinyurl.com/59c8z9

A finalagreement has beenreached between African Press International(API) and Fox News Network (USA) on the dates to air the Michelle Obama tape arising from a discussion Mrs Obama had with the APItwo weeks ago. The show will take place any day/time from now, with a 15 minutes alerton when it is to take place. Other programmes will be interrupted. This is a precaution taken to avoid interference from any quarter.

In the agreement, Fox News Network will broadcast 39 minutesof the 54 minutes long tape. The whole tape cannot be aired unedited due to security reasons and especially due to the explosive political temperature in the country because of thePresidential elections that is just around the corner, November 4th.

The tape will be aired in two portions by twoseparate units in the Network. API’s representative will appear live in one of the shows.

Don’t overthink this one. At least we know the tape exists because the LA Times has already let that out. So now we know it must be one incriminating piece of video to make up such fake excuses not to release it. Just one perosn with access needs to have the guts to get it out, thats all. Somebody with a conscience.

  • NoTrollZone

The LA Times is showing what an unethical org they are (yeah, again). The Times reporter wrote that they were in possession of the tape. He advertised the fact. Supposedly, the Times listed what was on the tape (or part of what was on it). They found the material fit to comment on in the first place, so they obviously deem it newsworthy. But they refuse to release the tape.

It sounds like they are protecting Obama or trying to buy all the hype they can for their rag.

Either motivation is base and reprehensible.

Why did the source give the tape to the Times in the first place? To up their circulation? I assume they gave the tape to the Times because they wanted the information made public.

The source can be protected– or the source can muster the internal fortitude to come forward. It doesn’t matter which way it happens– but it needs to happen.

This is feeling like a defense attorney’s argument of evidence being weighed on probative versus prejudicial considerations– and that is not the role of the media. The media’s job is to inform the public of information in the public’s interest.
Obviously this tape falls into that category.

  • pj

This Khalidi tape business is ridiculous. I don’t think a majority of the American people would really pay attention to it or care at this late stage. It looks as though most Americans seem so intent on getting rid of Bush that they don’t seem to realize that with Obama they will be getting someone much, much worse. The “packaging” is different, but Obama is much more ruthless – particularly in terms of his almost absolute control of the media.

    • Shiloh

Right, a-and the polls aren’t really tightening are they? There is a sea change underway, a wave of new concern about Obama and who he really is. The tape the LA Times is covering up is just another brick in the wall.

I think the article I posted here on another thread should provide plenty of information on the Obama links to Palestine. While on the Woods Fund Barack and Ayers gave money to Rashid Khalidi, now known as Edward Siad.

Cannot add those links here but Google this:
How Barack Obama learned to love Israel
Ali Abunimah, The Electronic Intifada, 4 March 2007

It has pictures of Barack and Hateful A/K/A Michelle at the same table with the Siads. Also insightful information about how Barack is hiding his true feelings from someone(s)about Israel or Palestine

“Over the years since I first saw Obama speak I met him about half a dozen times, often at Palestinian and Arab-American community events in Chicago including a May 1998 community fundraiser at which Edward Said was the keynote speaker. In 2000, when Obama unsuccessfully ran for Congress I heard him speak at a campaign fundraiser hosted by a University of Chicago professor. On that occasion and others Obama was forthright in his criticism of US policy and his call for an even-handed approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

If disappointing, given his historically close relations to Palestinian-Americans, Obama’s about-face is not surprising. He is merely doing what he thinks is necessary to get elected and he will continue doing it as long as it keeps him in power. “

Plus it confirms the public suspicion that the MSM is biased towards Obama.

If Obama denounces the comments as per the LAT meme then what’s the harm of releasing the tape, or a transribed version? What’s the harm – unless it rivals ‘not God bless America, God damn America’ Rev. Wright.

gerard, I agree. The economic meltdown caused McCain’s numbers to go down. Before the melt down he was leading even in the lying polls. People believe the repubs are at faught when it really is the dems with Obama as the chief cause of the ACORN/Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac mortgage fiasco resulting in the Wall Street meltdown. McCain, the RNC, and the media are derelict in their collective duty to inform the voters. Obama will get away with this one too. Maybe they should put the tape up for auction on Ebay?

  • POdVet

Since we do not actually know what is on the tape, other than the highlights published by the LA Times, I’m honestly on the fence on this one. The public does have the right to request the LAT release it, just as has been said the LAT has the right to say no. There are many questions that arise just from hearing about the tape. Was Ayers seated next to Obama, and their actions were clearly of close personal friends? Did Obama make inflammatory remarks about Israel? Etc. Etc.

But we do need to temper our curiosity for long enough to ask other questions. Does the tape show material that could be used to identify the source? If so, could the tape be cropped in such a way to protect that persons identity to save them from possible repercussions? Would it be sufficient for the LAT to release the audio from the tape only?

Perhaps what we should be doing is encouraging the LAT to release the tape in such a manner as to protect the identity of the source while still providing what could obviously be pertinent information to the public.

“i think it would be funny if the terrorist, anti semite who attended this party had his identity uncovered…”

And if it turned out that it was actually someone undercover for a 3 letter agency sent there to monitor the event? Long shot I know, but there is always that possibility. The agencies have most definitely been monitoring meetings like these since 9/11. We were all outraged when the Bush Admin outed Valerie Plame Wilson and rightfully so. I would not want to have another American intelligence operative risked unnecessarily!

My point is, that the LAT is right to protect the source if that is indeed what they are doing. But we have every right to ask the tape be released, in such a manner to protect the source while still providing the truth of what went on at that meeting.

The double standard here is so disgusting. The MSM has NO credibility and when this is over I bet things change really fast for these bozos. I hope Olbermann and Mathews lose their jobs. Finally. The LA Times need to show for ONCE that they are unbiased and produce the tape. I have said this forever – Jews voting for Obama are idiotic and are wishing that they could go back to Hitler. Period. Obama and his nasty terrorist pals couldn’t BE more clear on how Anti-Israel they are. It’s SO obvious and IMO no self respecting Jew would ever cast a vote for that idiot HATER Obama. But, then again, I don’t think any self respecting WOMAN, HISPANIC, BLACK, CHINESE, WHITE, PURPLE, BLUE whatever would vote for him anyway.

  • IndieDogg

The LA Times says it ran the “story” and that’s all there is to it.

    NOT TRUE.

The Times ran A story. Based on interviews and a video tape. Their decision regarding what to write is only one story.

I might find other “stories” from the same material. All depends on your point of view. Which is the point of viewing it. [A News Organization, generously applying that to the LA (Behind The) Times, is not supposed to have a "point of view" on the news, so there's a problem here to start with.]

The LA Times is not the gatekeeper for the truth. The truth, in this case, is the property of all. This was not a secret meeting (note that the LA Times has published audio of a CA Governor’s meeting in the Governor’s own office that I’m sure was not intended for public consumption). This was a banquet. No one hid the event. No one was required to give the secret knock at the door. Obviously people were not patted down for cameras or tape recorders. So, it is not the EVENTS that are secret. It is now only a RECORD of the events that is being suppressed.

Yes, to be as kind as possible, I call Bullshit on the LA Times.

But, to the point they lamely try to make (now they’re claiming privilege but they only brought that up when the first excuse didn’t fly), that there is only one story and they’ve already covered it. Honk — BS again.

The visuals, apart from the narrative, could well be a story. To be ridiculous but illustrative, if Barack Obama is giving a toast to his friend Khalidi while, in the background, Louis Farrakhan is making out with a Polar Bear (tried to find the least offensive animal image possible) on a banquet table, would that not be a “story” worth another pass?

With whom were the Obamas seated? Who else was in attendance. Were there visual indications that color the delivery of the actual toast? Were there other things said, in Barack Obama’s presence, that would, normally, require a response.

For example, did someone speaking just before Obama call for the eradication of all left-handed people? Again, extreme to make a point. Was Obama applauding or giggling at the call for left-handed people-o-cide?

Since when does a news organization have the right to be the sole arbiter of what is, in fact, the story within an event and cut off any other view or, in this case, re-view, of the same event and material? If it were left to the LA Times, they would merely print the story, OBAMA CLAIMS ORDAINED VICTORY!! and be done with it.

But, that is not their place or right.

    Finally, to a practical issue.

What source gives a video tape to a newspaper with the expectation that it will never see the light of day? Ludicrous and, my guess, not true. If a person has a video tape and they wish for it to never see the light of day, they burn it.

What if a source gave the LA Times a video of President Bush having sex with Britney Spears on the White House lawn in the middle of night, while Secret Service agents guarded the loving couple with backs turned? If I had that tape and I didn’t ever want it seen, what would I do? Call a newspaper and hand it to them but say, “Hey, don’t show this to anybody.”

You don’t think it would be for sale on NYC sidewalks on DVD for $10 the next day?

The American Public has been played for fools and, to a large degree, have acted the part, for most of this election cycle. But really.

Even the gullible have their limits.

If there were something on that videotape that the LA Times wanted seen, we’d have seen it already.

Oh, the last story about the tape. The LA TIMES sitting on it. Now, THEY are the story.

Whether they like it or not.

  • Liz

Another articel about khaldid (2005) that actually has a whole paragraph on the 2003 send-off party (via ace).

    quote:
“In bringing professor Khalidi to Morningside Heights from the University of Chicago, Columbia also got itself a twofer of Palestinian activism and advocacy. Mr. Khalidi’s wife, Mona, who also served in Beirut as chief editor of the English section of the WAFA press agency, was hired as dean of foreign students at Columbia’s SIPA, working under Dean Anderson. In Chicago, the Khalidis founded the Arab American Action Network, and Mona Khalidi served as its president. A big farewell dinner was held in their honor by AAAN with a commemorative book filled with testimonials from their friends and political allies. These included the left wing anti-war group Not In My Name, the Electronic Intifada, and the ex-Weatherman domestic terrorists Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers. (There were also testimonials from then-state Senator Barack Obama and the mayor of Chicago.)”
