“Friends In High Places” * Open Thread

Ah, democracy. How wonderful that we have a system of checks and balances, ways to insure a fair election. A whole, entire Department of Justice to oversee and protect our electoral process. Hip, hip hooray for the DOJ! Except, not so much…Check out this video:

And this one:

So – just to be clear – the very people who are supposed to be on the look out for organizations like ACORN, which is now under investigation in at least FIFTEEN states, is backing off. Huh – so much for that whole “one person, one vote” democracy thing.

And one last video on voting. This one deals with our military and their ability to vote while serving oversees:

OPEN THREAD! Have at it.

  • Hope is the last to die

The election day will be a far bigger chaos than the ones we saw in caucuses. I hope the McCain supporters won’t give into the bullying like the Clinton supporters who ran away from caucuses without using their vote (or letting someone else to give to Barack).

My open thread topic is pretty simple.

I really am worried that people are so polarized that they can’t agree to disagree.

I worked for years in a very conservative environment……..banking.

Banking used to be a very dull business. You make loans. You take in deposts. The difference….profit.

It was a “slow” industry, but predictable.

    And then……the 80′s hit.

    *hoohaw*

    And then the crash came.

    *ohno*

Anyway, a group of us from this very conservative business used to go eat Chinese and debate politics every Wednesday.

    We enjoyed it alot.

Those who were too emotional, never joined us.

I have operated as though on-line people MUST be like my Wednesday Chinese group.

    Perhaps I’m wrong.

When will YOU get it? Hillary Clinton is not on the ticket because Obama and his surrogates are crooks. So, now votes for crooks.

    • Firefly

When I become detached and apathetic about the harm that’s being done to our country – when I view politics as an intellectual exercise that can be dispassionately debated over Chinese food – then maybe I’ll fit in with your group.

“This is an extraordinary statement by Senator Biden. I don’t ever recall a vice-presidential candidate predicting that the election of their candidate for the President of the United States would invite forces in the world to test the mettle of the person elected. It has to mean that Joe Biden continues to harvest serious doubts about whether Barack Obama is prepared to be commander-in-chief as he famously announced a year ago.” — Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani
“This statement is what Michael Kinsley once famously called a gaffe, ‘a politician inadvertently speaking the truth…the next President of the United States will be tested. There are enemies of the United States that are awaiting the results of this election. John McCain has passed every test in his life. He’s spent over two decades wearing the uniform of this country. He’s spent over two decades traveling the world, learning the issues, getting to know the leaders, and taking very difficult positions. Senator Obama’s chief claim to experience is leading in the front lines of community organizing and doing legal work with ACORN. As Joe Biden said, Senator Obama would invite testing and his responses would not be the right ones.” –Randy Scheunemann, McCain Foreign Policy Advisor

    From the Patriotroom.com:

Virginia Attorney General Saves Military Ballots in Fairfax
» by Bill Dupray in: Democrats, Election, Law, Military, Virginia
The Republican Virginia Attorney General, Bob McDonnell, has advised the Democrat Registrar in Fairfax that he cannot toss military absentee ballots due to a lack of a witness’s address. Keep in mind that though the state law requires the address, the ballots themselves were not printed with a space for it.

Virginia’s attorney general told state election officials Monday that they must count perhaps hundreds of federal absentee ballots despite a state law ordering some of them to be cast aside.

A dispute arose last week after Fairfax County’s registrar said state law bars him from counting dozens of federal absentee ballots because the witnesses failed to include their addresses on ballot applications, as required by a 2002 state law designed to stamp out voter fraud.

In an advisory opinion Monday, Republican Attorney General Robert McDonnell said that federal law trumps state law on this issue, and federal law calls for the ballots to be counted.

Here is the official press release from McDonnell’s office.

McDonnell Opinion: Count Absentee Military Ballots

Opinion Finds Federal Law Preempts State Law; Federal Ballots without Witness Address Are Lawful, Must be Counted

FAIRFAX – Attorney General Bob McDonnell released a formal opinion today concluding that federal absentee ballots from overseas military voters lacking the printed name and address of a witness must be counted. The opinion affirms that federal law preempts state law, thus clarifying the state and federal statutes regarding the issue. The confusion centered over whether a state law requiring a witness’s printed name and address controls federal absentee ballots or the federal law governs this issue. The opinion was requested by Delegate Bill Janis (R-Henrico). Click here to read it.

In the formal opinion the Attorney General finds, “It is…. my opinion that the applicable provision of Virginia law, § 24.2-702.1(B), interpreted to require an overseas military voter submitting only a Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot to include the printed name and address of the person who signs the witness statement is preempted by the provisions of the (federal) Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. Finally, it is my opinion that general registrars may not reject a Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot submitted by overseas military voters for the November 4, 2008 federal election that does not include a printed name and address for the person who signs the witness statement…..”

Approximately 100 Federal Write-In Absentee Ballots have been set aside in Fairfax County pending a legal conclusion regarding the discrepancy between state and federal law. Additional Federal Write-In Absentee Ballots may also have been received in other jurisdictions. The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot is most commonly used by members of the military who are stationed overseas and have not received a state absentee ballot. It is a means by which service members can be guaranteed a vote in federal elections.

A copy of this formal opinion was provided to the State Board of Elections this afternoon.

Chalk up one more for the good guys.

Dick Morris’ Political Insider RSS ARCHIVE
    McCain Closing the Gap

Zogby, Rasmussen, and Gallup all report McCain closing the gap to within 5 points. Zogby had him 12 back, Rasmussen 8, and Gallup 6 in their previous polling. McCain’s use of Joe the plumber, combined with the tax issue, is working!

Unilaterally, John McCain agreed to disarm himself by refusing to use perhaps his most potent weapon in exposing Barack Obama: the Democrats’ relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The McCain campaign and, at its direction, the Republican Party, have banned use of footage of Rev. Wright from their campaign commercials. Perhaps for fear of being accused of racism, they are not bringing up the single most compromising association in Obama’s past — his close liaison with Wright.

But it does not matter that Wright is black, white, or brown . . . or purple. What matters is that he spews hatred of the United States and that Obama was an active participant in his church.

Or are we supposed to believe that Obama regularly attended church with Wright for two decades, chose the reverend to baptize his children and officiate at his wedding, titled his book “Audacity of Hope” after hearing a sermon, but did not know of his anti-American views?

    Nonsense.

The only time the issue has been used was during the Democratic primary when Obama’s ties to Wright were first revealed and the reverend’s horrific anti-American sermons were aired on television. Even then, Obama tried to distance himself from Wright in the mildest of possible terms, only denouncing him more sternly after the relationship had begun to sap his standing in the polls.

Fortunately, one independent expenditure group — NationalRepublicanTrust.com — has the courage to bring the truth about Wright to the attention of the American people.

Our local paper spread disinformation…this is the same paper who didn’t publish the correct McCain Hqs address before Palin came to Roswell…gave us TWO of Obama’s address!!

Went to do ‘in-person absentee voting’ which we were led to believe involved getting and filling out the absentee ballot request, getting the ballot, then filling it out on the spot. NOPE….meanwhile, people are complaining the haven’t gotten ballots they requested 2 weeks ago…

The person who took our info was someone I had known from a now-closed pet store. She put our data in on the spot…but I saw a pile of them in front of her.

Meanwhile, the computers where DOWN and there were a lot of confused people trying to vote on the machines! I think some were just leaving…

Rather than take a chance on machines, I opted for having the absentee ballot sent. If it doesn’t arrive by Friday, I have the clerk’s direct line…may have to vote “provisional” for the first time ever!

But since this is NM, I wanted to vote on an real absentee form…so I took the chance…One time I voted a couple of elections ago on the touch screens–the guts of a machine was lying on the floor, a guy came over, put it back in…and I was supposed to trust my vote to THAT????

By the way, all you have to do to “prove” who you are is give them an address…don’t even need to give them proof of a BILL!!! So why do I have my voter ID registration card??? Or a license? Why just be required to give an address….she didn’t indicate I need to show anything to prove it…what’s up???

Hillbuzz says something is definitely up with Sarah remarks today about the LAT and the Khalidi dinner tape.

Sarah Palin was just in Toledo, Ohio this morning and talked about the LA Times protecting Obama by refusing to release the tape it’s holding of him enjoying himself while anti-Semitic comments were made at a dinner honoring Palestinian Rashid Khalidi in 2003.

It feels to us like the pump is being primed for something to break on this tomorrow. It also seems like FOX anchors know more about what’s on that tape than humanly possible without actually seeing it.

We personally believe tomorrow morning that tape will indeed be released, to steal the thunder of whatever Obama’s doing tonight on his big TV special. The exact same way McCain stole Obama’s thunder from the last night of the Democrats’ convention by announcing Sarah Palin as his VP the next morning. (snip)

Palin’s remarks today were very well crafted, and expertly delivered. Her choice of words was careful, deliberate, and somewhat out of normal syntax for her. We can usually spot the lines in a speech a candidate’s been given by campaign writers — and those the candidate incorporates from her or his own personal style. Everything to do with the Khalidi tape and the LA Times was straight Steve Schmidt. The rest of the speech was Palin being herself. (snip)

So, we expect FOX to start airing the tape tomorrow. But, in the public’s mind, the tape’s 100% associated with the LA Times. There’s also been offers of rewards for the tape circulating the last day or two, with the price tag on that up to over $125,000 from what we last saw.

To us, that looks like great cover for someone to bring that tape forward without it smelling like an “October Surprise”, when that’s exactly what the Khalidi tape is.

      Much more at the link…

Is it true that McCain chaired a committee of some sort which gave Khalidi to do social research on the Palestinians? It was back in the 90′s from what I understand.

However, a committee simply giving $$ to an professor is a far cry from attending an affair in which Khalidi and Obama sit through anti-Semitic remarks…and don’t leave or criticize them…Same situation as sitting listening with Wright….

        • http://insightanalytical.wordpress.com InsightAnalytical-GRL

sorry, I missed the $$… something like $500,000 or so to Khalidi to do research….

The more I learn about Barack Hussein Obama the more I dislike him and will never trust him.

As I said yesterday, we need to enact laws to protect us as citizens of the USA, against people like Obama these crooked judges and lawyers, Senators, Mayors and the like.

The have run amok all over our country and do as they please, if we attempt to do the same thing they are ready to throw us in jail.

Well I say Jail the lot of them, they are a disgrace to our country they need to forfeit their positions and go back to being private citizens. God help us if Obama gets into the White House.

I am so angry I do not know what to do. I will be putting out more fliers this week-end right up until Election day.

I wish a O-Bot would get in my face, it will be H*LL to pay. I am sick and tired of all of them, including members of my own family.

How did we let ourselves get to this point???? We are too trusting of our government officials and they took advantage of us. I say NO MORE, We have to take back our country and send these scags straight to jail. We need better laws in place that do not leave any wiggle room for these lowlifes to get around the law to suit their propose.

    COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS!
    WE WILL REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER!!!!!!

    PUMAS ROCKS!!!!!

SEND THAT ONE OR THE ZERO BACK TO THE SLUMS OF CHICAGO OR TO PRISON. I do not care where just get him out of the public eye SEND HIM TO KENYA.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! I am mad as H*LL AND I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!

  • CheatedFLVoter

I just voted and I feel great. It didn’t hurt one bit to vote Rep for the first time in my 64 years. Not only did I vote McCain/Palin, but I voted straight down the party line. I figured they could use some help. This one’s for Hillary in 2012. You know, this is the first time I feel like my vote counted in a while. Go Pumas!

    • http://JohnMcCain.com Galt, Master Thrall of Planet Triskelion

I’ll be doing the same as you on November 4! PUMA power!

    • McPalin

This bitter voter cast a ballot for Mac/Palin and all repubs on the down. It still smarts that they stole the primary election from us and ‘our girl’.
Pelosi has to go! How’s Cindy Sheehan doing running against Pelosi? Can she win?

    • KathyNeocon

Me too. Already voted straight Republican for first time by mail.

    • hilldemgoneindie

me too. straight repub for the first time since my first election in 1980 (i would have voted in ’76, but i was active duty military overseas and curiously, no one made absentee ballots available to us), and for those folks on my ballot whose affiliation is unknown or unavailable i left blank. i didn’t want to accidently give even one dem candidate my vote – that’s how bitter and over the dem party i am. although, i must say, i am surprisingly very pro mccain/palin after being forced to look elsewhere after the 5/31 tragedy. i like them both very much and feel confident they’ll win (i predict a massive landslide of epic proportions).

  • Dark Knight

    from national review’s Jim Geraghty:

“What I’m happy to hear, but am not putting too much stock in:

Comments from a McCain campaign source that their man is running 6 percent ahead of where Bush was in key parts of Ohio, that Obama is running behind Kerry in key parts of Pennsylvania, that McCain surging in Minnesota and Michigan, Sununu back up in NH, Coleman tied in Minnesota, the race is tied in Iowa, McCain safe in Florida and Colorado, and Obama’s team is worried that his lead Virginia isn’t as solid as the polls would make it appear.
More Republicans have shown up for early voting than Democrats in California.
A sudden surge in McCain advertising in swing states. I’m not sure the waverers are going to decide based on a commercial in the final week.”

    • Shiloh

Well what are the waverers going to decide on? I think they will decide on ads in the last few days. The reason they are waverers to begin with is that part of them wants to vote for Obama but they just have too many lingering doubts. Those doubts are being brought to the forefront and many new ones revealed in this endgame. The trend is important and the trend is for McCain. Obama knew this was coming and the BIG AD tonight was intended to blunt the trend. Will it? The msm will do all they can to make it so, but I have a feeling people are sick of seeing him. We are in a state of Obama saturation. The last time it was at this level was when he made his big euro-tour, and it was right after that his numbers tanked.

I wrote to the LA Times, here is the reply:

Thanks for your email. I understand your concerns. I want to direct your attention to the story below, which appears in today’s LA Times and offers an explanation regarding the tape and why it can’t be released.

McCain campaign accuses L.A. Times of ‘suppressing’ Obama video

The Times says its promise to a source prevents the paper from posting the video, which shows Barack Obama praising Palestinian activist Rashid Khalidi at a 2003 banquet. The story first appeared in April.

    By a Times staff writer

    October 29, 2008

John McCain’s presidential campaign Tuesday accused the Los Angeles Times of “intentionally suppressing” a videotape it obtained of a 2003 banquet where then-state Sen. Barack Obama spoke of his friendship with Rashid Khalidi, a leading Palestinian scholar and activist.

The Times first reported on the videotape in an April 2008 story
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-obamamideast10apr10,0,5826085.story > about Obama’s ties with Palestinians and Jews as he navigated the politics of Chicago. The report included a detailed description of the tape, but the newspaper did not make the video public.

“A major news organization is intentionally suppressing information that could provide a clearer link between Barack Obama and Rashid Khalidi,” said McCain campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb. ” . . . The election is one week away, and it’s unfortunate that the press so obviously favors Barack Obama that this campaign must publicly request that the Los Angeles Times do its job — make information public.”

The Times on Tuesday issued a statement about its decision not to post the tape.

“The Los Angeles Times did not publish the videotape because it was provided to us by a confidential source who did so on the condition that we not release it,” said the newspaper’s editor, Russ Stanton. “The Times keeps its promises to sources.”

Jamie Gold, the newspaper’s readers’ representative, said in a statement: “More than six months ago the Los Angeles Times published a detailed account of the events shown on the videotape. The Times is not suppressing anything. Just the opposite — the L.A. Times brought the matter to light.”

The original article said that Obama’s friendships with Palestinian Americans in Chicago and his presence at Palestinian community events had led some to think he was sympathetic to the Palestinian viewpoint on Middle East politics. Obama publicly expresses a pro-Israel viewpoint that pleases many Jewish leaders.

In reporting on Obama’s presence at the dinner for Khalidi, the article noted that some speakers expressed anger at Israel and at U.S. foreign policy, but that Obama in his comments called for finding common ground.

It said that Khalidi in the 1970s often spoke to reporters on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Khalidi later lived near Obama while teaching at the University of Chicago. He is now a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University in New York.

Fun Stuff! Hi NQ Buddies, long time..no see :)

    : Israel News, Nicolas Sarkozy

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is very critical of U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama’s positions on Iran, according to reports that have reached Israel’s government.

Sarkozy has made his criticisms only in closed forums in France. But according to a senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate’s stance on Iran as “utterly immature” and comprised of “formulations empty of all content.”

Obama Answers Immigration Questions from Chinese Newspaper

World Journal, Posted: Oct 27, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Barack Obama said he will address immigration reform in the first year of his presidency if he’s elected, according to the World Journal. The Chinese newspaper interviewed Obama on immigration, one of the top issues for the Asian community because a large percentage of Asian Americans are immigrants. Obama said he will work to legalize undocumented immigrants. He encouraged immigrants to apply for citizenship, so that they could participate in the U.S. political process. Obama also supports issuing driver licenses to undocumented immigrants for safety reasons.

I just read that the reason why the Khalidi video tape won’t be release is because of what Obama said.

(Third attempt) I see a few comments here trying to relate the firing of Attorneys to what is going on in this situation.

From what I understand , there’s a special division of the DOJ that has jurisdiction and that’s the Civil Rights Division.

The Civil Rights Division is separate from the general “division” where all the US Attorneys are.

The Civil Rights lawyers don’t take orders from the President and have the discretion to do whatever they hell they want. And that these Lawyers are basically Democrat partisans.

This has been a problem throughout Bush’s term.. there were so many people held over from the Clinton years who were totally opposed to the new policies and quite a few of these folks (in the CIA, Dept of State, etc..) did their best to sabotage the implementation of policy they didn’t like.

I could be wrong.. i didn’t research this yet.. i’m at work.
