Obama Team Hits Panic Button on Libya

Barack Obama failed Monday to make the case for the war/non-war in Libya to the American people and the White House, panicked by the tepid response, is leaking classified information about the CIA’s role in Libya. Let’s start with the public reaction reported by Rasmussen:

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 43% of Likely U.S. Voters rate the Obama administration’s response to the Libya situation as good or excellent, marking little change from two previous surveys. Thirty percent (30%) give the administration poor marks, up from 21% earlier this month before the president committed U.S. forces to Libya. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Forty percent (40%) of voters felt at that time that the administration was doing a good or excellent job responding to the political crisis in Libya. Last week, with the U.S. military actively involved in Libya, 41% rated the Obama administration’s response as good or excellent, but 28% said it was doing a poor job.

The numbers also worsened slightly for the president from last week when voters are asked if Libya is vital to U.S. national security these days. Twenty-seven percent (27%) of voters say yes, while 48% say no, up six points from a week ago. Twenty-four percent (24%) remain undecided.

But the real damage is being done by Jon Stewart, who is showing some nice non-partisan chops in giving Obama a comedy smackdown.

So don’t be shocked that the Obama team piled out of its clown car and scurried to dish national security secrets to the press with the hope of trying to alter the growing public view that Obama is a ball-less, spine-less wimp who has touched off a new war and is afraid to call it what it is. Specifically, members of Obama’s national security team are telling reporters that Obama has sent CIA operatives into Libya:

The Central Intelligence Agency has inserted clandestine operatives into Libya to gather intelligence for military airstrikes and make contacts with rebels battling Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces, according to American officials…

The C.I.A. presence comprises an unknown number of American officers who had worked at the spy agency’s station in Tripoli and those who arrived more recently. In addition, current and former British officials said, dozens of British special forces and MI6 intelligence officers are working inside Libya. The British operatives have been directing airstrikes from British Tornado jets and gathering intelligence about the whereabouts of Libyan government tank columns, artillery pieces, and missile installations, the officials said.

By meeting with rebel groups, the Americans hope to fill in gaps in understanding who the leaders are of the groups opposed Colonel Qaddafi, and what their allegiances are, according to United States government officials speaking only on condition of anonymity because the actions of C.I.A. operatives are classified. The C.I.A. has declined to comment.

I will bet you dollars to donuts that John Brennan and Deputy NSC Advisor Denis McDonough were out selling this story.

But this won’t stop the bleeding of public support. It requires Obama to offer a clear, principled vision to what the US is trying to achieve in Libya. Watching the rebels flee eastward is a reminder that Qaddafi ain’t going willingly or peacefully. If Obama wants him out then Obama needs to commit to regime change. Very simple. As I wrote in a piece earlier this week Obama never should have gotten out in public with the stupid remark about dumping Qaddafi unless he was prepared to do so. Once you go public you set expectations. Now that the CIA cat is out of the bag the entire operation is going to be tainted in the eyes of many of our European and Arab allies. This is only going to get messier and Obama will find himself an easy target of comedians who were previously inclined to give him a pass.

Exclusive: Obama authorizes secret help for Libya rebels

“Former officials say these follow-up authorizations are known in the intelligence world as “‘Mother may I’ findings.”

In 2009 Obama gave a similar authorization for the expansion of covert U.S. counter-terrorism actions by the CIA in Yemen. The White House does not normally confirm such orders have been issued.”

  • guest

Instead of sending the CIA, Obama should have sent Farrakan and Wright as his envoys to sweet talk Gaddafi to voluntarily leave for his ‘son’ Obama’s sake.

  • seattlegonz

It’s so ridiculous and upsetting that this guy is our president. Anyone who didn’t think the cia was in Libya doesn’t know anything about the CIA. But to say so is to destroy the basic foundation of the way the CIA gets things done.

Does this not count as boots on the ground because they’re wearing dusty loafers or sandals?

Are the lefties going to go beszerk because Obama is now talking about waging a covert war? Oh lord. Let’s get the union thugs to storm the white house. They need something to do now that the cameras are off of WI.

Uganda has offered Qaddafi a new abode, for humanitarian reasons, so he needs help packing his bags.
These leaks are not unexpected, for there has been a nonchalant nature to all the discussions so far, even as reports have surfaced numerous times about marines deployed to Libya.
    Mission creep started early!

Anyway, I am pretty conservative but I do not believe in pre-emptive war or Obama’s “kinetic military action.”  Nothing that jerkass says would convince me we have a reason to be in Libya.  It is not our business or responsibility to be the savior of the world and the righter of all wrongs.  I was against going into Iraq, and I am against being in Libya, as well.  To me, this kind of thing should be the last resort, not the first response.

That 40% who think the president is doing a good job are simply delusional, but I think that number represents the American people’s desperation to have their spirits lifted, to feel some pride in their country. I mean, who doesn’t want to be the country responsible for “liberating” people? Wars (excuse me, I mean kinetic military actions to promote dialog) have a way of making people feel good about themselves and their President. So yes, Obama is a complete failure. He’s trying to get the natural bounce that comes from being a war president and he can’t even get it up (pun intended) over 40%.

However Iraq ends up turning out and however poorly it was handled, I did not ever get the feeling that the Bush Administration invaded Iraq to placate domestic political issues such as getting reelected.

I haven’t changed my mind.  I don’t want us messing around in another Middle Eastern country’s mess.  I’m more concerned about our insane debt to China and other foreign countries.  And I don’t see spending taxpayer dollars now on anything foreign;  I’m sick of these political games.  Everytime Obama opens his mouth he LIES.  Humanitarian mission, my ass!  If we were such humanitarians, we’d would have stepped in to stop the slaughter in the Congo, Darfur, Ivory Coast, and Rawanda.  The laying bas**rd said no boots on the ground.  2,200 Marines headed that way, and psst, psst the CIA is sneaked in.  We don’t have the money and we’ve spent enough lives on politicians useless forays into other countries that don’t know or want Democracy.  Look at Iraq.

  • BINKY

  • Politicsisdirty

Agree, looks like Pres Obama went to his Lame Stream Media first. Guess the head of agency and his people were all surprised.

Also, CIA operations are supposed to be clandestine. Why is he telling the world about it? Am I wrong or there is something funny about this declaration..and I don’t mean ha, ha.

  • Politicsisdirty

With Pres Obama, it is always manufactured information…with complicity from the Lame Stream Media (CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, New York Times)

  • TeakWoodKite

Why is it always the CIA getting whacked by the POTUS? This shit is getting really old.

That leak had to have been ok’ed by Soetoro, because if it wasn’t and BO does not have the DOJ busting heads for it, then he is a clear and present danger.

  • ImissReagan

I don’t understand why more people aren’t praising the great job Maobama has done. He’s installed the Musim Brotherhood in Egypt & Tunisia. He is soon to install the Musim brotherhood & AQ in Libya. He is gettting ready to “liberate” Syria and install a Caliphate there.

And his crown jewel is to duplicate the great Saladin and throw out the Jews from the Middle East and install Muslim control of the Holy Land. His goal is near. Maobama is hoping the Middle east will be rid of Jews. Maobama though will insist he is not an anti-Semite. He will do his best the relocate the israeli Jews to Hollywood. Maybe Maobama will throw in in some free lox and bagels.

  • TeakWoodKite

    Spot on.

    I got a feeling….

  • wbboei

    If-

    1. Obama said on Monday that our military goal was not regime change

    2. But prior thereto he signed an order authorizing the CIA to commence an on the ground operation to aid and abet the rebels to that end . .

Then, it follows, as day follows night, that  Mr. Obama lied to the American people–yet again.

  • TeakWoodKite

Eighty-seven percent (87%) of all voters nationwide say they are following recent news reports about the situation in Libya, with 56% who say they are following Very Closely.

This one is a BIG problem for Obama. BO’s polling negitives are almost as bad as his actual performance.

  • ImissReagan

Maobama lied to the American people? Duh.

By meeting with rebel groups, the Americans hope to fill in gaps in understanding who the leaders are of the groups opposed Colonel Qaddafi, and what their allegiances are,
    —————————————
Only now, after 10 days of bombing, and only as we decide whether to arm the rebels, does it even occur to the great Messiah Obama that it might be useful to know who these people we are aiding, if only to know whether the devil you know (Gadafi) is better than the devil you get.  And as Larry says, it is indeed that half wit Brennan (who was once a good man according to my source in the military, but is now a political whore) and Obama toadie McDonough who leak the story that Obama authorized CIA involvement.  The funny part of it is the Messiah has gone to elaborate lengths to show that our role is minimalist, and it is whatever the people decide and yet day by day as he gets deeper into this thing those fig leaves fall to the ground.  This is like Obama’s dance of the Seven Veils, and big media sits there in awe with a big woodie, while the rest of the world sees him for exactly what he is.  What Gertrude Stein said about Oakland applies to Obama as well:  there is not there there.

I apologize for asking dumb questions:

But how in the heck do we get rid of Qaddafi if we don’t get rid of him?

And since our success in Libya is predicated on getting rid of Qaddafi, what happens if we don’t get rid of him?

P.S.  Does the CIA get pissed when their covert operations get leaked by an ignoramus desperate to get those poll numbers up, up, up?

  • William L. Donlon

What are the 2,000 Marines being sent  going to be doing?

The Marine’s standard deployment is for Seven Months.

The Marines on station off the coast of Libya have been deployed for over a year.

They were off the coast of Egypt when that was “hot”.

The 2,000 are being sent to relieve those that are there.

    As for “CIA” Opts. —-

Everyone dropped in may or may not be “CIA”.

There have been men on the ground to talk to our “Air” since it started the “No Fly Zone”.

It’s the only way it works.

And No Fly Zone is the easy part.

We are now after tanks and artillary on the ground, in cities etc.

The closer we get to civilian populations the more we need exact coordinates being sent to the flyboys.

Airforce has its own “Special Forces” that operate “bihind the lines”.

Their programe and P.T. is tougher than the “Seals”.

Every Commander & Chief is an “OJT”

That’s why you get “starts & stops”, FUBAR and flip flops.

    The only question is —-

    What’s the learning curve.

I honestly believe our guys have got this.

The best troops degrade the longer they are in combat.

Gadafi mercenaries have about two weeks left in them.

The next reversal will see them fall all tthe way back to Tripoli.

    Like Monty in 1942,
The rebels need to regroup and train a little before they go tear assing up the road again.

    Gaddafi is no fool
He known since the first air strike that hi days are numbered.
He is already looking for the Exits. and trying to improve his negotiation position.

In the next two weeks he will get weaker and the rebeles will get stronger.

This is over by April 15th!

    .

  • felizarte

Obama doesn’t realize that he can no longer orate the people in line.  The political aspects of his decisions on Libya are so transparent.  It is obvious that he instigated the protest; turns around to accuse Khadaffy of abusing the protestors; standing back to wait for the no-fly zone clamor to get into gear, hides behind the French and the English for what?  Distract the American people from their own economic troubles?  One of these days soon, a fed-up democrat will decide to run against him in the primaries–just as well.

I have to say I really like Gov. Palin’s slip of the tongue, wondering if this is a “squirmish”.  obama has been squirming over this for weeks, he was squirmy in his speech, and now he’s making entire govt. departments and agencies and media types and everyone else squirm.  “Squirmish” seems a much better description than “not-war” or “kinetic military action”.

I think Bush and Cheney did the Iraq invasion for several reasons. None of the even close to honorable. But being re-elected was one, oil another, finishing up Daddy’s war, and going after Saddam because he tried to assassinate Daddy Bush. I am sure Obama’s reasons for the Libya mess are less, but ultimately just as foolish.

Well I have not seen any evidence as in postings ether way so my comment stands… NQ writes about almost everything else but not much on the plight of veterans and my tone is one of disgust…

  • EWard

Katmoon wrote the best comment about Obama’s Libya speech.  Every word is measured to avoid giving “soundbites” to the Republicans.  The voters see no leadership from Obummer because every word and action are driven by 2012.

  • oowawa

You’re a good writer, Agent X.  I kind of think the No Quarter “Editorial Gang” would be open to publishing an article that you might write on the “plight of veterans.”  You seem to know about that subject.  You could write to Bronwyn & ask her.  I’d like to read about it.  I’m sure you’d find a sympathetic audience here on No Quarter.

  • Jim Ticehurst

There have been many concerns about VETS and their Familys written about here in the past Eight years..mostly during the Bush years ands Our invasion of Iraq.and Yes…Our Policys are Sadly selective..and Political…NQ has been up here Eight Years now..AGENT~X..there are so many issues to deal with..Now..But I agree with you…Our VETS Deserve the BEST our Nation can give them..Rather at Walter Reed or on the Streets..Thier Familys too. They are Our Nations Finest…Our Son in Law was a Navy seal who Died on Active Duty..

  • Fred

    I don’t think so.

I’d say Bush genuinely believed that freedom and democracy in Iraq were both doable and a great thing. As great of a president as W was not, I think the Left smeared him and slandered him quite a bit.

For that matter, regime change in Iraq was also a goal under Clinton. Therefore I doubt Bush ultimately did it for self serving reasons.

On the other hand, I am not sure on Libya.

    Jim,

The tip of the iceberg and NQ has just not focused on any of the real issues! Lets look at the current….

I have two vets right now we are fighting for. One got hit with an IED and has not received his Purple Heart. Unfortunately he had PSD and committed suicide. The other crashed in Pakistan in 2003 but is being denied their purple heart because DoD is saying… non-combat…Funny re-fueling fighters is non-combat…. Go figure….

On top of that 11,000 vouchers are being cut by Congress for vets who are homeless…. We know another vet who will not go to bed at night with the lights off and my church found one homeless camping out with at AR-15… At least he decided he needed help after living in a tent for nine whole months…

    NQ only scratches the surface….

    oowawa,

I know the issue but I am no expert and would do the article any justice..and that I am not willing to do a half-hearted story for those who place their lives on the line. Though maybe a guest story from John Driscoll, President of the NCHV would really make it interesting…. Or maybe even maybe Paul Rieckhoff… That would do it justice…

  • Agent X

BY the way…. Libyan bishop claims ‘dozens’ of civilians killed in air strikes

What the hell are we doing over there and for whom and for what????????

  • ~~JustMe~~

As oowawa, expressed above you would be adding to the scope of information by offering an opinion piece, at NQ, so we are kept aware and up to dates on veteran issues.
We need to remember, the No Quarter posters are mainly part time. This is why, we all have to come together and offer information to right the wrongs that are taking place within the country.
You sound as though you have in-depth knowledge in this area, which can only add to getting information out, compared to someone else who is more inclined to offer information on up to the minute events, actually taking place on a particular date and time! Go for it Agent X!

What do you think of this???

What if Obama’s election was a Kennedy pay back to the Clintons??
There is always the chatter of Uranium blah blah..
I was working in Wilmington, NC at ILM when John John Kennedy
came to town, very big deal.  He purchased the red air plane there.
So I kind of followed a little closer than normal when I read or
heard John John’s name and flying.

The week after his death he was suppose to declare that he
running for the senate seat that Hillary won.  In the Kennedy
whisky soaked mind do you think he believed the Clintons
had something to do with the crash?? The political event
where the Clintons are sitting and Edward walked in for
the 1st time with Obama…never seen such a look
on Hillary’s face.   2008 We Will Not Be Silenced, do you
think Kennedy helped rig the Demo primary so Hillary
could not win??  Even with the huge ego of BO when and
where did he get the Ok to pursue being President??
Was Edward Kennedy a Spook behind the scenes for BO??

  • Retired

Larry, for a former CIA officer and State Dept counterterrorism official, you are remarkably ignorant of the Bush Principle, and of the Scooter Precedent therein.  According to the Bush Principle, if Bush did it, it’s OK for Obama to do it.  The Scooter Precedent, which established that compromise of CIA Clandestine Service Officers operating undercover overseas is “fiar game” if such allow advantage in domestic partisan politics, has now been revealed as a key part of the Bush Principle, as adopted by the Obama administration.

By the way, I wonder when the press will start telling it like it really is by saying. “…revealed by United States government officials speaking only on condition of anonymity because they realize that they are committing a felony by violating their security oaths as well as endangering the lives of loyal and brave clandestine service officers operating deep behind enemy lines at extreme vulnerability.” ?  Probably never.

  • EWard

    Puma

Ted Kennedy chose Obummer in 2008 because they shared the same agenda.  I do not believe it had anything to do with Hillary winning the Senate seat or JFK Jr’s plane crash  The deciding factors in 2008 were the abuse of power by Big Media, the caucus fraud, and the illegal donations pouring into Barack’s campaign.

  • Jim Ticehurst

I have read Larrys Articles here for 8 Years…no one tore the Bush principle or Scooter..or Rumsfeld or Cheney a new Ass or fully understood the “Bush principle”..more than Larry did..he was on track the whole time..

I think the Heads of Our Agencys need to be Elected too..Our Government is no longer Operating as the WILL of the People..

I think Kennedy’s main concern was “being on the right side of History,” as the current popular cliche goes.  And the “right side of History” is the “Historic” side, and the candidate with the most Historicity was Obama, although Hillary was also Historic–in a lesser sense of course, since black trumps female.  When it became clear, as Chris Matthews revealed, that Barack was in reality the last Kennedy brother, the wisdom of Ted’s choice became clear….

Jim, FYI, Larry and I are former colleagues at the Agency and enjoy pulling each other’s chains for the comic relief that we need when we see such rank incompetence in our political leadership.  Mutual respect for each other’s work and professionalism allows us to do this, but perhaps, judging from your reaction, we should keep this chain pulling private to avoid confusion.

By the way, as one who has served time out there on the frontiers of freedom, and beyond, I thank you for your sentiments.

For some reason, I very distinctly remember Rick Ames smoking outside the corridor next to the south cafeteria on my forays into “Hindquarters” (as I liked to call it).  Mercifully, I only had to spend a 20 month tour there with Human Resources Mismanagement.  They gave me 24 months to accomplish a project.  I finished it in six in the hopes of reprieve, but stayed an extra 14 until I could get the overseas assignment that I wanted.  My blood pressure returned to normal as the wheels went up on the departing flight.
I think Ames is a treacherous scumball, but realistically, as an espionage agency that understands the human motivations for betrayal, we have to ezxpect some traitors.  They are easily dealt with from a legal perspective.
For some reason, treachery by political operatives against clandenstine service professionals and the support professionals that serve alongside them overseas seems to be generally accepted, even though the result in terms of loss pf human life is sometimes the same, if not worse.  What should happen in the case of the NY Times interview is that the perps should be identified and prosecuted.  Since the leak may well have been authorized with the direct knowledged of the President in this case (neither Brennan or McDonough would have the cojones to do this of their own volition, although McDonough is certainly stupid enough to do it), nothing will happen.
And they wonder why we don’t trust them.

  • Retired

By the way, if it makes your relative feel any better, I was unintentionally compromised on national TV by the then DCI.  I will spare you the details, but when I a retired a couple of years afterward he still remembered the incident and apologized for the compromise and my embarrasment.  My wife said that I really gave the red color adjustment on our TV a serious workout!  Please give your own member of “the family” my greetings.

“According to the Bush Principle, if Bush did it, it’s OK for Obama to do it.”

Yep, and that includes starting wars of choice as well…. and screwing over the Constitution while outing spooks for sport. I find the entire matter no laughing matter at all. While I do not support the invasion of Libya (we should have done that ones when we had international law on our side). I am also not a happy camper with using Agency assets as PR tools. If anyone one of those guys is captured or killed because of this leak someone needs to go to jail, without a pardon…..

When the hell is enough, enough?

  • FlDemFem

Kennedy’s main concern was “being on the right side of History,”
And isn’t it ironic that he will go down in history as enabling the election of the most corrupt, the most ignorant, the laziest, and let’s not forget incompetent, president in our history. Frankly, no one deserves it more than Ted. His insistence on the HCR bill, his legacy, was the nail in his political coffin as far as I am concerned. Ted often claimed that health care was something he had been working on for 30 years. My answer to that was “If you didn’t get it done in 30 years, then you should find another job!!”

And Puma, when Ted walked in with Obama, it was the first inkling the Clintons had that he had tossed Hillary under Obama’s bus. Ted had been a strong supporter of hers, then he went with Obama without telling the Clintons he was doing so. It’s no wonder they went into shock when he walked in with Obama. One thing the Clintons are is loyal to their allies and friends. Ted Kennedy, not so much. It was a betrayal of massive proportions when he went with Obama. I hope he is looking up and seeing what he has wrought on this country, and I hope it causes him a lot of pain. As much as the country will have to endure before we get rid of this buffoon.

  • FlDemFem

Yes, I have seen a chicken dance. It was at a small fair/circus years ago. The chicken was put on a metal plate and, after a few minutes, it started to dance. It wasn’t until years later that I found out that the reason it danced was that the metal plate was heated up under its feet. Congress should start heating the plate under this crop of chickens, right now.

Just one thing to say about your comment on John-John, Puma. Caroline is the smart one in that generation. John wasn’t that bright, very pretty, but not that bright. If the statement by Retired, is correct, and the leak was Obama ” going together with a wink and smile” then how can a president be above the law?

Bush doing “a wink and a smile” doesn’t mean it’s legal when BO does it.
