CLASS, Through and Through

John and Sarah — Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin — you must always remember that Barack Obama had to spend EIGHT TIMES the money you spent in order to win the presidency. Barack Obama had to saturate every television station, and buy WHOLE CHANNELS on satellite TV services such as DISH, in order to “win.” In fact, he had to “buy” the presidency. If you had had an even playing field, if Barack Obama had honored his promise to take public financing, you would have won with ease. (And thank you to Truthteller for noting that to me in a telephone conversation.)

We are so touched by the many e-mails you send us, and we apologize if, at times, we have not responded to you. Our Inboxes get overwhelmed many days, and we are not always as responsive to you as we wish we could be. But know that we read your e-mails, and that we care deeply what you think. We appreciate your ideas and suggestions so much.

We plan to keep on keeping on. We will not rest for a single day. We will continue to watch and listen, to critique and question. We will keep writing and asking you questions.

Now, even more than during the election, we will need to keep a close watch on what transpires in our nation’s capital and be watchdogs.

You will need to help us be good watchdogs. And we know you will.

Bless you. Grieve and get angry. But never give up. Never despair. We have too much at stake to let up now. More than ever.

      I am so proud of my hero John McCain. In this election I got to know him much better and God he is such an honorable man, he is a true gentlman. How can we miss to have such a great American as our president and instead have a true charlatan?

        As I watched McCain’s speech last night, I know why I supported that man. He’s a man of honor. Period. This election has liberated me and I feel good knowing that I stood up and not let others take my vote for granted.

        I look forward to seeing Gov. Palin again. She is a humble servant and will be a great leader to our country one day.

        I agree. I got to know him in this election and to admire him greatly. We missed a wonderful opportunity. We are lucky to learn about, meet and come to know people like him in our lives as role models of courage and principle. That’s still true, no matter what the winds of fortune bring.

      McCain’s speech made me feel proud that I supported him.

      I feel the same way I felt when Bush was elected in 2000 and again in 2004. Disappointed that Americans can behave like consumers and can be sold to the highest bidder.

      I feel that we will have Bush III in office, there are too many parallels between those two men. It is as if the same machine is behind them.

            I do think it’s weird.. I remember feeling deep despair, and disappointment in the country in November ’04.. And – I’ve been, unfortunately for the country, proven correct in my apprehension.. My son is a student at the Univ. of Chicago, and he and his friends were ecstatic that they got the tickets to the park yesterday! The young people who realize what is at stake are very energized. I worked at the polls yesterday, and saw, in my republican district, a huge turnout of democrats, and both Obama and other democratic candidates won. I hope Obama and his administration succeeds at repairing the country ruined by the 8 years of mismanagement and ideological divisiveness, No more of those stupid 3 G’s and other irrelevant nonsense… Thank god.. (And I don’t even believe in it).

      “Mary, that McCain Speech was excellent…I almost had tears in my eyes…great stuff”

      Trust me, this woman is no Republican (neither am I) but we agreed. BURN ALL the QURANS….THE MCCAI SPEECH IS ONE STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART!!!

      Obama’s was “synthetic hoopla” and push-button emotionalism…embarrassingly pedestrian for such a “historic first”.
      Of course, here we are not allowed to talke of Gov. Pallin’s equally “Historic First” as our first female VicePresident!
      Nor should we consider the much-vilified Hillary run (the superior candidate) as an equally “Historic First”.

      Diminishing women, who are too obamyopic to see through their own misguided support for the dickhead-elect, is the Obama Agenda….Wait for that baritone voice yelling at you soon:

    I can’t thank No Quarter enough for helping me keep my sanity through all this. When I would travel (I don’t have a laptop), I would immediately try to find an internet so I could get on No Quarter and see what is going on.

    I had to explain to my 10 year old granddaughter why the best man didn’t win last night – because black people only voted for black “just because” and young people voted for a man they knew nothing about – they just knew he was exciting and had rock concerts for them.

    What a sad day this is in America.

      I think you did your granddaughter a disservice by saying what you did… Your intimation that blacks voted for Obama ‘just because’ is very strange and uninformed. As for the young people – I don’t know how attuned you are to them and how closely and how many you know – that’s not my experience at all. I have a 32year old daughter and a 20year old son, and they and their friends are very informed and open minded. They make their decisions based on a lot of research, and certainly not ‘just because’.

        Rachael. The vast majority of blacks (I am a 63 yr old female Hillary supporter) did vote for him exactly because he is half black and on no other basis. I did not, neither did one of my sisters and one of my 2 daughters. The other 10 members of my family voted for him precisely because he is black and they said so. They are college educated middle class people who grew up as I did in a hard life (chopped and picked cotton) in MS then moved north. They seem to think voting for Obama makes up for the racial slights we encountered during our growing up years. None of them marched as I did with Dr. King. With his racial lies he has dishonored Dr King’s legacy. I can’t stand to look at the lying phony.

    I am so sad. I had hoped to give my children a better America.

    Yesterday at the polling station I had some woman tell me Barack is “half white” so I shouldn’t worry. This election was never about race for me. I could give a shit about the color of his skin–the content of his character that was and is the issue. For me it was about integrity and honesty. The honest attempt to make a more transparent government.

    Those words have no meaning to Barack Obama or many of the congressmembers that were re-elected or elected last night.

    I will never again buy a house in America because money from MY mortgage will be used to fund organizations that commit fraud and intimidation against me.

    Secrecy is the beginning of Tyranny. Bush gave him the patriot act tools and DEMS already used them against Joe the Plumber.

    Get a copy of the constitution and cling to it for dear life–it is all we the regular citizen have left because as we have seen we have no voince in the 4th Estate and we have no standing in the courts.

      Why would those who ‘support’ Hillary’s political views and philosophy support McCain? Her positions are almost identical to Obama’s, really, if folks bother to study them. So why such animosity towards Obama? And – no, you seriously misunderstand why the majority of the country elected him – it has nothing to do with ‘white guilt’, or reverse racism.. There are a lot of thoughtful, intelligent, non-paranoid citizens here.. And now they reached a critical mass. A lot of it has to so with the bright new generation that grew up informed and hopeful. And they deserve to be given a chance to inherit a decent working democracy, not a broken-up one.

    No it was never about the color of Obama’s skin. My partner is African-American and she is the love of my life (I am caucasian). She didn’t vote for Obama either. We didn’t vote for him because we felt he lacked experience and that his past associations have been wreckless and questionable. We felt that his proposals (when they were his own) lacked substance and clarity. So many reasons. My partner has been through hell. Her family, friends, and co-workers harassed her mercilessly because she would not vote for Obama. It was terrible — more so for her than for me. We did not watch the election last night. We watched old movies instead. I hope I have enough old movies on DVD to last me for the next four years…

    I hadn’t seen the concession speech of McCain. I hadn’t cried until I saw it . The first time my husband or I ever voted for a Republican. McCain is a genetleman-a real gentleman and I feel honored that I voted for him-a man who loves his country and serving her. And I love Palin too for her feistiness and grit.

    God bless them both.

    There is one part of me that is glad that McCain and Palin will not have to deal with with the debacle the country is in.

    Unfortunately many did not see it that way, they rather give the reward to a man that no one is sure how deep his love lies for this country, for even now he says his faith in this country was only restored when he won the nomination, but so be it.

    Thank you John McCain, you have given me a greater appreciation for words ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.

    Its just sad that some of the people of this great country let you down.

      I sure wanted McCain to win, I personally felt that for a man that gave so much for this country this was a small reward for his service.

      I voted for John McCain not because he wanted to win, but because he wanted us as Americans to win. Watching this speech once again reaffirms in my mind that I made the right choice.

      He is truly a gentleman and I am greatly moved by his love for our country. I also see, today, that he wanted us to all go out and do what we can to make this country greater than it was when we found it.

      We must be vigilant, and courageous, and honorable in our doings going forward as the loyal opposition of Pres. Obama.

    Since Hillary’s candidacy was stolen from her, and US, McCain was the next best thing. His speech last night is evidence of why so many of us believed that. Despite disagreements in policy, he truly loves this country, and has given his entire adult life in service to her. Obama, quite simply, is nowhere near the man McCain is.

    I echo No Quarter when I say what a privilege it has been to write for NQ, and to have so many smart, funny, knowledgeable people commenting here. You have helped me keep my sanity when my party left me, and gave me the opportunity to share my anger, hopes, frustrations, dreams, and sadness. I thank you from the bottom of my heart – it is an honor for me to “know” such fine people, writers and readers. Thank you.

    Thank you NQ for a community like this. I AM happy for AAs today–it must be a proud moment. As a woman I would have been giddy if Hillary had won or even if Palin had become VP.

    I resent all the charges of racism; how the media never fully vetted him; how his and Biden’s gaffes never made news; how they trashed Sarah Palin…I have to remind myself that this is the same media that brought us the war in Iraq, trashed Gore, never did real investigative work about 9/11; babied Bush TWICE and hounded Kerry.

    He used thug tactics to steal the primary with help from the Gang of 5 and then he bought the general election. I guess democracy is for sale.

    I have no regrets about supporting McCain. He would have been a fine President.

    I just feel robbed. I should be thrilled to have the Dems back in power as I was when Bill Clinton won but I don’t.

    i feel that same deep grief that you have when someone dies. you know, deep down, you will survive, but the sense of a world turned (temporarily) upside down…and the surrealness of people around me, assuming since they know I’m a dem, and liberal, that of course i must be celebrating. as i told my 12 & 6 year old today: we will not be bitter, sore losers, we will hope for the best.

      Teach your children to be fine people like John McCain and Sarah Palin. Teach them to research and to speak eloquently.

      Teach them to doubt all public figures until they prove their word.

      Work to fix your local community and take steps to fix your state. If your congressmember is a bum petition against him.

      In 2 year we have the opportunity to replace the ensconced criminals in congress. Find a good candidate, one who didn’t go to Harvard or Yale.

      Elect regular people not rich ones. Send small business owners and women to congress. Make it your dream to the common person’s voice in government.

      Harvard and Yale have damaged us beyond all by taking from us our voice and replacing it with an elitist voice against the public good.

      I’d like to see Palin run too, although I would counsel her to lose “of course” and “also” forever, and to take some debating classes to sharpen up her ability to make a point.

      Keep in mind, too, that there are lots of talented women coming up through the ranks and after what happened to Hillary and Palin, there may be (certainly SHOULD be) a sense in the country that next time is women’s “turn”.

      The world crisis didn’t even wait til Obama gets sworn in. Russia is on the move and demanding our capitulation in the defense of allies Poland and Lithuania.

      This would not be so had McCain been elected. Putin knows how to measure a man–and Obama has come up lacking in all important ways.

    John McCain is a great man. I voted my conscience for McCain and have not regrets. However, I wholeheartedly agree with everything he said in his speech and we need to come together and work with new President. Even though we do not agree with the way the Presidency was obtained, clearly millions of our fellow country-persons did not feel the same way. Obama won the largest popular vote since Johnson–therefore the people have spoken. If Obama lives up to our expectations of what most of feel on this blog–he must be held accountable. Who will hold him accountable? Once again, we have to have faith in our system and let the electorate decide. Obama changed how the game is played–but remember, this opens the door for those who can defeat him in the future.

      If there is ever a war, I will stand behind Obama, because I stand behind my country. But the truth of the matter remains, that America was not designed to just agree with the president or any of its politicians. America is more than its president. As we have done in the past, we should always question our leaders. That is how we remain who we are.

    This has been beyond a doubt the worst year of my life.

    I still can’t believe an ordinary citizen was ripped to shreds for having the audacity to ask Obama a question.

    A simple question that caused the chosen one to commit an act of truth.

    It was bad enough that Obama’s goonies beat Joe up but for the media to pile on to, was absolutely horrific.

    I don’t think I ever saw so much voter fraud and out right cheating in all my life. The sad thing is in a few months it will all be forgotten until our next election.

    Makes me wonder why should we bother? Why should we give them our money and time? The outcome of this election makes me feel stupid for devoting myself to such a corrupt dishonest system.

    Everything we discovered about Obama will also soon be forgotten, nothing will be done. I am just going to except our government is corrupt and the majority in this country don’t care.

    In a few years this country will be in such a disaster no one will own up to voting for Obama. Although we will have a pretty good idea who did.

      Me too. I threw away $200 on John Edwards not realizing the fix was already in and he would throw his support to Obama. Then I threw away a couple hundred on Hillary only to see her cave to a candidate who was getting his donations from the Gaza strip.

      I’m not going to pay one penny more in taxes if Obama lowers that magic cutoff number into my income range. I’ll write a letter to the IRS and tell Obama he can blinkin’ well get his tax increases from the Gaza strip as well.

          thank you, I don’t know how much I donated but I called and they are sending it back. I’m not supporting anyone who supported Obama. If Hillary wants to support a mysoginist pig she won’t be doing it w my donations. Her and Bill can absorb their costs.

          I just called and told them I heard they were making refunds. The person who answered the phone agreed and said someone would be calling me back. He wanted to know where I got the information about the refunds, I told him from a “friend”. He was professional, but you could tell it was hard for him to disguise the disappointment. I had to take out loans that I am still paying on to send to Hillary and stopped spending on all other extras for me and my family while she was in the race, however, my heart isn’t in it anymore. Hillary and Obama have a better chance of getting donations from the folks in Gaza than I do.

    I started out supporting McCain because of my anger at the party and what they did to Hillary but I ended up going to my polling place wanting to vote for him. He is a class act. His humility really touched me and even though it may have cost him the election his refusal to use negative advertising like the whitey tape puts him heads above Obama.
    John McCain and Sarah Palin walk the talk. Obama just talks. It is a sad day for our country.

      Very nice message.

      The military started bracing itself for an Obama victory a few weeks ago. Funds for 1st quarter fiscal year travel expenses were released to his unit and then a few days later they were taken back. This happened to all the reserve units. The Navy, at least, is hoarding all the funds they can right now. My husband cannot travel to do his monthly drilling.

      We are already feeling the effects of an Obama Administration.

        I have the utmost respect for John McCain and Sarah Palin. I have deep gratitude to Larry Johnson and the people at this site, both the writers and the regular people. We are in for horrendous times. We must have faith and trust that God will bring us through.

    Geraldo Rivera was on Fox and Friends this morning and said that John McCain was the most honorable man to run for President in his lifetime. My sentiments exactly.

    We have now entered the American Idol phase of national politics.

    But maybe we’ll get lucky. Maybe Barky will pull a Taylor Hicks on us. Hicks got a record deal, they yanked it from him due to low sales and he vanished.

    My prediction. Barky’s honeymoon lasts less than 3 months. More investigations launched on him than Nixon, Bush and Clinton combined. Before the end of his first term, his approval ratings will be as low as Bushs’, if not worse.

    thank you for this website and this post. I have voted for both democrats and republicans over the years, and this year I wholeheartedly supported John McCain against Barack Obama. I hope the PUMA movement survives because it is my new political home. I tried to read and participate in right wing blogs this election season, but so many of them today are full of nothing but attacks on John McCain.

    These same people refuse to countenance any criticism of George Bush but have gleefully torn into McCain for years. I gave more money to McCain than I have ever given to a politician, and to see him lose because his own party wouldn’t come out to support him against an opponent like Barack Obama…well, let’s just say I’m not going to look at the GOP again for a long time, if ever.

    John McCain will always be an American hero and last night proved that he is a class act. I think that he always knew that he would not win but somehow kept hope alive in his supporters ( I was one of them) until the very end. President-Elect Obama is very lucky to have Senator McCain in the Senate because I truly believe that Sen McCain will put COUNTRY FIRST and reach across the aisle. I wish President-Elect Obama well. It is a great moment for the country to be able to celebrate the first African-American President. Now it owes it to African-Americans and the country to be a great President.

    My mother always says “wrongdoing brings pain”. We can all hold our heads high that we did the right thing and played fair and there is never any shame in that. No one ever really gets away with doing the wrong things. Good always, always prevails over evil. Obama and his supporters did alot of despicable things to win. But their victory will not nearly be worth the price they will pay for what they’ve done.

    Today, I must grieve. I don’t know how long it will take to come to grips with what has happened. I am still in denial and disbelief. I don’t know how all of this has been so clear to us,and yet, so many could not or would not see what this man will do to our country. Last night, I let my tears flow as John McCain gave his concession speech. How tragic to see this wonderful heroic man, whom I have come to respect so much, be rejected by a country he loves so much. I would have been honored by his presidency. I never allowed myself to grieve for Hillary because there was so much to do, but now it’s like I’m lost and wandering. What can I do to heal this terrible pain in my heart?

            I caught some of Rush today, and he’s convinced that McCain’s loss means that America has rejected the Moderate Republican – and should go back to full-bore conservatism.

            As a moderate Republican myself, I saw the fact that Rush disliked McCain to be a Good Thing. I was hoping that McCain would pull the Republican party a bit more towards the center.

            I figure two things can happen… I will discover that all my uber-liberal friends were right and I was wrong, and Obama won’t be so bad after all – or I will find out that I was right, Obama will show his true colors, and he, Pelosi and Reid will be shown the door in their next elections.

    If nothing else she has the reason he had a fighting chance as exit polls show he picked up 4% by adding her to the ticket.

    The GOP needs to regroup. As much as I’d love to see Palin run again, the media has destroyed her too much. She is too damaged.

    I sent the following email to several friends this morning and think it appropriate to share this with you all as well:

    I cannot tell you how saddened I am with the results of yesterday’s election. I cried so many times last night and I get tears in my eyes now thinking about how this country was conned into voting for the most unqualified candidate for president ever.

    In his concession speech, McCain said that he failed us. He didn’t fail us… the main stream media did by covering up for Obama and for not exposing him for who he truly is… a narcissistic con man with a thin record, questionable past and shady friends. People who voted based only on what they heard on the news and saw in commercials failed this country by not doing their homework. I think they will soon be very disappointed with their choice and unfortunately we will all have to live with it for the next four years.

    Now I have to pray every day that he doesn’t take this country down.

    It was nice to know that there were a few fellow McCain supporters out there. It was a source of comfort during the election season so for that, I thank you.

      I too cried last night. I watched John McCain’s speech last night with a mixture of grief and anger. How could Americans be so fooled by the snake oil salesman that will soon be the leader of this great nation? The media…yes, I agree…they are the ones who failed us.

      A funny thing happened this election. A lifelong Dem, I’ve left the party…never to return. There is a “New” Democratic Party…the one that Donna Brazille, Howard Dean, and Nancy Pelosi tried to cram down our throats. I was told after all…I wasn’t needed. They too have failed us.

      All those Republican that did not get behind John McCain and turn out to vote yesterday…failed us.

      The one person that did not fail was John McCain. When you considered everything that was stacked against him…he did not quit. He will, in my heart…be MY President…BO NEVER will!

    In hindsight, this might be the best thing that happened to John McCain. I think whomever will be president the next 4 years has a rough road to travel. And better Obama go down than an honorable man like McCain.

    If I was a republican looking to run for office in the next 10 years, I would not hire any McCain campaign staffer who bad mouthed Sarah Palin. Either on the record or off. Frankly, what employer wants someone who has spoken poorly of their previous employer? Sarah Palin might have contributed to the campaign not winning, but she was not the only reason. A lot of those people complaining might not be on the losing side today if they had implemented some new, fresh, hip and exciting ideas marketing their candidate and his message. Pretty much the only thing fresh about the way the McCain campaign went was Sarah. I would’ve fired quite a few of them a long time ago and gone with some new blood!

    I especially like the very very classy statements coming from senior McCain campaign adviser calling the Palin’s the Wasilla Hillbillies and saying that Sarah Palin went wild in her shopping ON HER OWN after being told to “buy 3 suits”!

      The Palins are Hillbillies! And they wanted to drag the rest of the country to be just like them, the regular joe-six-packs. Who cares about science (she snickered at fruit fly research, the foundation of biological research..), or education, or art, culture.. But the majority of people do aspire for higher goals and role models.. And that was part of the young people’s energizing – they are looking forward, to be better, not to conform to the image of a redneck alaskan frontier woman and her dude.

    I learned a lot about John and Sarah this election. They are truly honorable, humble, and extraordinary. They are connected to average folks in every walk of life.
    Americans had the right to reject them for sound-good telepromter reader. I wish no harm to our great nation but I’m sure many Americans who voted for Obama/Biden will look back and regret for not hiring McCain/Palin for the top jobs.
    Whatever their agenda, McCain and Palin would always put the country first and that is the difference.

      I just can’t help wondering – where is this idea that either McCain or Paling puts the country first? He totally ruined whatever chances he had of winning by choosing as VP a woman who obviously is ignorant of the world outside of Alaska (and who barely managed to graduate from college after changing 5 of them, somewhat of a record..),and who couldn’t have stepped in to be POTUS. Who is so devoid of any curiosity that she never even thought of visiting a foreign land, even Canada, or that same Russia, her of-so-close neighbor. McCain sold his soul for the last chance to get that ultimate prize. And I wonder what he sees in the mirror now..and whether he regrets having run such a dirty and dishonorable campaign, Obama, on the other hand,never lowered himself to McCain’s level, and conducted a decent, clean campaign. Which is just another proof of the kind of person he is.

    A sincere thank you to Larry, SusanUnPC, Amy, and all the rest whose articles I read religiously the first thing every morning and the last thing every night. If only there were some way of making it required reading for every voter!!! Oh well, we must look forward, not back. My poor sister is so disillusioned and despondent, she has vowed to never again get involved in a political campaign. She is a struggling single mom who donated what little savings she had to Hillary Clinton’s campaign, then fought hard for John McCain. But I’ve convinced her that John and Sarah ran a great race, it was much closer than Dems ever dreamed it would have been, considering 8 years of Bush, war, economic crises, Katrina, etc, and many states were within 1 percentage point. One thing we know is true…time flys; let’s hope it does for the next 4 years, that we survive as a nation, with a shred of democracy left intact.
