You Be the Judge

There are certain cans of worms I’d prefer not to open. I’m a mere hobbyist blogger and really don’t need a lot of added aggravation in my life. Having said that, I’m not going to editorialize at all. I’m going to post a story that was brought to my attention by the Council on American Islamic Relations. I have a feeling that, unfortunately, it won’t be the last dealing with this explosive topic and these sorts of disturbing allegations.

OK I lied. I will editorialize. If the story is true then the attackers should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If it isn’t then the same goes for the accuser. Not to diminish the seriousness of the allegations being made by the alleged victim, but there’s a certain Bonfire of the Vanities quality to this story.

This is the kind of story that could lead to rioting and violence and could have all sorts of repercussions. I just happen to think that if you’re going to publish such a story it would probably be a good idea to make damn sure it’s true.

    Staten Island is NYC’s Republican borough. There are a lot of racists over there. Anyone who lives in NY knows this.

    Not that this justifies the behavior. Of course not. But if you had asked this native New Yorker where I would not have been caught on Election night I would have answered: Staten Island, Howard Beach Brooklyn, Pelham Bay, the Bronx.

    Sadly, 0bama’s election had little to do with these people’s behavior. There are incidents like this in these locations that crop up from time-to-time. In recent history, illegal latino immigrants have been the brunt of these kinds of race crimes.

    But yes, if true, the people should be arrested and punished.

      A Brooklyn-raised Marine sergeant and his new bride were tortured and killed execution-style in their California home – allegedly by four other Marines under his command.

      Sgt. Jan Pawel Pietrzak, who was raised in Bensonhurst, and his wife, Quiana, were found bound and gagged in the ransacked house, each shot in the head.

      Pietrzak was the suspects’ sergeant at Camp Pendleton, Quiana’s mother said Wednesday.

      “They’re monsters,” Faye Jenkins told the Daily News. “They’re monsters.”

      Pietrzak’s mother, Henryka Pietrzak-Varga, said she had prepared herself “for the possibility that my son could die in Iraq.”

      “But to die like this, in their own home?” she told The News. “They were good kids. They didn’t deserve to die like this.”

      Investigators said the motive for murder was “financial gain.” Neither mother believes that.

      On Oct. 15, deputies were dispatched to the Pietrzak home in Winchester, an exurb of San Diego, when the Marine did not show up for work.

      When they arrived, the deputies found the Pietrzaks in the living room and evidence that the robbers had tried to cover their tracks by torching the house.

      Charged with murder and other crimes are Pvt. Emrys John, 18, of Maryland; Lance Cpl. Tyrone Miller, 20, of North Carolina; Pvt. Kevin Darnell Cox, 20, of Tennessee, and Pvt. Kesuan Sykes, 21, of California.

      Lawyers for the men could not be reached for comment.

      Pietrzak’s mother said she can’t understand how Marines could have committed such a crime.

      “Don’t the Marines screen out people like this?” she said. “Didn’t they know they had murderers under their roof?”

    Wow! This is a Pandora’s Box isn’t it? Not much to say until the police investigating this find out more about it. If those guys really did do it, I hope they will be able to find them quickly, and yes, prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. No behaviou like that should be tolerated.

    Haven’t we already been down this road once form the other direction? I am not trying to diminish the impact or seriousness of this type of violence, but are we going to judge our society by a few crazies? The guilty, whichever side they are on need to be brought to justice, but lets not label everyone racist for the acts of a very few.

    That has already been done by Obama’s campaign.

    Unlike obama supporters. I don’t have relative morality. So this is wrong. I don’t care what party the person is, people have a r ight to walk down the street and not worry about being attacked like this. However I’m not sure if this kid being islamic has anything to do with. I was probably some already hateful white gang memebers who probably didn’t even vote. My problem with the democrats this year is that they seem not abide by their own supposed values. My mine are still the same, no one has the right to put there hands on anyone without their permission. Period. I don’t up hold people in their wrong doing no matter the color. What applies to the Obamacorns applies to these young men.

      I’m torn. Such a thing could happen. But, it’s true, he didn’t look beaten up. I never would have questioned such a story a year ago, but after all the media lies I have seen, I now question everything they publish. I certainly hope it is not true as it is despicable and deplorable behavior. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true only because I saw how angry Obama revelers could get if someone wasn’t happy enough about Obama’s victory. Human weakness exists on all sides.

    Hate to be cynic — I lie, I’m actually pretty comfy being a cynic — but that young man looks to be in pretty good shape after being beaten viciously with a baseball bat about 36 hours ago to the point that he told his mom on the phone, “I’m dying.”

    And — not exactly too related — because I’m an equal-opportunity cynic, I couldn’t help but snicker this morning as I read the Letters to the Editor in my local paper from white people who are congratulating themselves for the idea that now racism has been taken care of and we’re all equal. Gosh, I never knew that it could be so easy to end racism, guys! You just go into a private booth, push the right button, tell your white friends to all do the same thing, and viola!     When confronted with the story about the girl who allegedly got attacked by Obama supporters was reported, O’Reilly immediately said that he thought there was a good chance that it was bogus and that we should wait and see.

    I agree that these types of stories are often manufactured because someone either wants to make a point and/or gain attention.

    I do feel though that Obama’s presidency will not heal racial wounds because he has sabotaged his own rhetoric of inclusion with his divisive tactics and actions.

    Yes, it’s the kind of story that can lead to violence. Oops. It is the violence that IS the story.

    If this is an accurate story–and it would be easy to verify, if there are photos or a record of a hospital or doctor’s visit, or if his blood matches that on the towel–then the story is that there are people so filled with hate and racist frenzy, that they would beat a young man over his color.

    The story reminds me of Matthew Sheppard, who was beaten and murdered by young men who hated him because he was gay.

    These things happen, and they are horrifying. Most people wouldn’t respond to the story with more violence; they would respond with outrage at what was done to this young man.

    These things, moreover, are happening more and more across Europe, as anti-semitism is growing there. Race hate, religion hate, gender hate [effigies of a hanging Sarah Palin anyone?] are all variations of bigotry which engender violence. Committing hate violence in return is just as bad.

    I still revere Matthew Sheppard’s father who argued before the court AGAINST the death penalty for the young men who killed his son. Let them live a long and miserable life in a hell-hole of prison, so they can regret every single day that their hatred and ignorance is what placed them there.

    I feel pretty cynical about this too, the kid does look like he’s in pretty good shape for an attack by four people with bats….
    a lot of people will do/say a lot of weird things for their 5 minutes of fame.

    If this IS true…the perpetrators should be caught and prosecuted but I fear this may be the beginning.
    I heard an interview on NPR with some Aryan Nation spokespeople who said their memberships and inquiries have skyrocketed.

    If CAIR is promoting this story then in all likelihood it’s a fake story.

    They run stories like this all the time. They’re trying to make off as if there’s a general Violent Anti-Muslim hysteria in the country. They want Muslims to feel alienated and separate.

    In strict Islam.. Muslims are to separate themselves from Non-Muslims.. not even taking them as friends. Non Muslims aren’t even regarded as having human dignity. They are just to be put up with until the time comes where the Muslim can take political control of an area.

    CAIR is doing its part to ensure animosity and enmity are stoked in the mind of Muslims.

    I din’t know if is real, but I read that Obama was born in Mombasa, Kenya. After his mother married. she renounced her American citizenship and moved to Indonesia with Barry, who was adopted by Lollo Soetoro. That’s mean, he is naturalized citizen not native born citizen. What will happen? He can’t be president. How cam Bush is updating him with our country Security???

    I am REAL curious what the “civil rights” division of DOJ is going look like.

    Call it what you like, but I seriously doubt much will change. All the illegalities that have occurred on W, will make for a real big lump in the Oval office carpet.
