I had wondered all along, “Why aren’t they paying with checks, like everyone else pays their workers?”. And now the possible answer: That wouldn’t be fair, that wouldn’t be inclusive, “because many in his canvasser demographic might not have bank accounts and aren’t used to the idea of a paycheck and how to turn it into spendable $$.”

(I personally know several chronically-unemployed. When they occasionally need to cash paychecks, they sign them over to their parents, to cash at the parents’ bank. Requiring someone to have check-cashing access would be discriminatory, just like requiring people to have incomes to qualify for mortgages is discriminatory.
