Washington Post: On second thought, maybe we were a little too Pro-Obama

It has been less than a week since “He who has not been vetted” became our President-elect. While the citizen journalists who volunteer time on blogs like this and others have done their best to search for answers about the man who will be our 44th president, they simply did not have the time and resources to uncover much and certainly did not have the ability to share what they did find with an American public that has a right to know.

The readers of No Quarter understand that the Free Press is one of the institutions that helped take America from a fledgling group of colonies and in just a little over 230 years transform us into one of the great empires in history. We are also aware that that particular institution is in as deep a decline as is our nation. The two go hand in hand.

The main steam media (MSM) let all of us down in this election season and if Barack Obama is not up to the job, they will be largely responsible for helping continue the American decline that the Bush team has so skillfully worked on for the last eight years.

So today, when the Washington Post via their ombudsman admits they were a bit Pro-Obama, it does not make me feel better. The wounds are too deep for an I told you so to clot the bleeding. Nope, after reading the piece from Deborah Howell, I am just even more pissed off.

Read the story here

It’s not like this is news to us.

The op-ed page ran far more laudatory opinion pieces on Obama, 32, than on Sen. John McCain, 13. There were far more negative pieces (58) about McCain than there were about Obama (32), and Obama got the editorial board’s endorsement. The Post has several conservative columnists, but not all were gung-ho about McCain.

Stories and photos about Obama in the news pages outnumbered those devoted to McCain. Post reporters, photographers and editors — like most of the national news media — found the candidacy of Obama, the first African American major-party nominee, more newsworthy and historic. Journalists love the new; McCain, 25 years older than Obama, was already well known and had more scars from his longer career in politics.

The number of Obama stories since Nov. 11 was 946, compared with McCain’s 786. Both had hard-fought primary campaigns, but Obama’s battle with Hillary Rodham Clinton was longer, and the numbers reflect that.

And the Post is not alone. Newsweek’s Meacham and Thomas admitted this week to Charley Rose they have been troubled a bit by the somewhat creepy nature of Obama’s singular being and his hold on his devoted followers. Tom Brokaw opined that he really does not know much at all about our President-elect.

Predictably, now that the man has been elected, the MSM will admit the error of their ways as a way to hedge their bets, just in case things go south. Then they can puff up their chests and say they were right all along. The problem is, no one is buying it anymore. Even many of those who have consumed copious amounts of “Barry Berry Kool Aid” admit the MSM has been in the tank from day one.

The mea culpas are too late, the damage is done. Whatever shred of credibility the MSM once had is as dead and buried as Tim Russert.

The MSM must now be looked upon for entertainment purposes only. Those interested in uncovering the truth must look elsewhere. You can look around the net, there is a lot out there, but who knows what to trust? You can stick with us at No Quarter, our resources are meager, we have but time and our hearts to give, but we will be keep digging. We won’t get everything right, but we will keep an open mind and look at both sides of everything.

Most importantly do not keep your beliefs to yourself. Citizen silence can kill great nations. Keep spreading the word. Door to door, e-mail to e-mail, blog to blog. It is the only way to combat a free press that is no longer free.

There are more Palin assaults coming, but I refuse to offer links. Suffice it to say my retorts have been scathing and widespread.

I think we need a massive movement to fight these smears. Kind of like an organization that does nothing but debunk each one. A marketing campaign.

PUMAS might need to do this. DONATIONS WOULD BE HUGE.

It is their sad attempt to regain their readership after they veered from true journalism. Too little, too late!

Meanwhile no investigations of any kind on Obama or voter fraud.

We live in some dangerous times.

  • mel

Desperation is keeping the MSM putting the heat on Palin because if the Berg Supreme Court holds, it will be Biden as Democrat President, or if the leakings of Obama keep coming through the EC who can vote for who ever they want as the POTUS can switch from Obama as qualified.

Do not let Obama’s new sign “Office of the President Elect” sway anyone, that is what children without any sort of self confidence do, not adults who are expected to lead a country!

72 days is an eternity for buyers remorse and Obama hasn’t even had a week yet and is sinking in public opinion fast!

  • Owllwoman

Perhaps the reason they feel the need to continue the assults on Sarah Palin is their actual fear of her. And a true fear of the future. There is no way Obama can continue his, godlike standing, while working in the real World. He knows it, and they know it. So the continued response is to bury the republican party in order to keep their hold on the unreality they spin.

I maintain that much of this pro-Obama coverage was generated by the large dollars he had to spend on advertising. I truly believe there were deals struck whereas they’d give favorable coverage in exchange for advertising revenue. He had what? 8 x more $$ than McCain?

I think it would be far more telling if the columnist above would list the dollars spent in advertising by each campaign, along with the story numbers during similar periods.

    Betcha THAT won’t happen, huh?

Keep up the good work. Great site. As for “spreading the word”, it really gets old being called a racist over everything. You can’t prove a negative, and anything uttered or written is “proof”, even on conservative sites…

My sister-in-law is totally enthralled by Obama’s victory. I mean, she doesn’t have a clue about his qualifications – she just thinks it’s fabulous to have an AA in the White House.

She also tried to tell me about all of McCain’s racist remarks. I don’t remember a single racist remark by McCain.

This is just a shining example of the people who voted for Obama, knowing absolutely nothing about him and just believing what someone else told them. Grapevine politics. Scary.

And we can now know for sure that half of the people in this country are pure idiots.

The Washington Post piece is a joke. They do all their little abacus routines on the coverage, totting up the numbers — but they ignore whole questions that never got asked of Obama, research that wasn’t done, investigations that were never launched.

It does sound like the Washington Post and Newsweek’s circulation is down. It been reported that Newsweek is down by thirty percent and MSNBC might not be too far behind. I was hoping that The PUMA movement could become some kind of a national political movement, but from some of the discussions it does not appear to be happening. I agree with them on all the women issues, but to be successful, I believe it must embrace all the segments of our society, not just women. I hope I am wrong, but I have some realy bad feelings.

I agree that the post-election MSM self-flagellation was inevitable for all of the reasons stated by other commenters. It’s what they’re good at — remember how they belatedly recognized that maybe they went a bit overboard with the Lewinsky onslaught?

With the majority of newspapers and TV stations staving off financial ruin, we should all cancel any ongoing culprit subscriptions and keep your visits to their websites to a minimum or stop them whenever possible.

Another Palin smear has been debunked. This one is actually funny.

The day of the third debate, Palin refused to go onstage with New Hampshire GOP Sen. John Sununu and Jeb Bradley, a New Hampshire congressman running for the Senate, because they were pro-choice and because Bradley opposed drilling in Alaska.
The McCain campaign ordered her onstage at the next campaign stop, but she refused to acknowledge the two Republican candidates standing behind her.

So according to the hatchet man/woman who talked to Newsweek, Palin is such an ideologue about drilling in ANWR that she won’t stand next to Bradley, even though John McCain has the exact same position?

    Right!

  • fluffy bunny

You really need to just put the whole blurb here. Everybody needs to read it all:

    Via Isaac Chotiner, Newsweek reports:

And Palin is such an ideologue that she won’t appear with pro-choice politicians, even though she attended events with pro-choice Clinton donor Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild?
And we’re really supposed to believe that Palin is so dumb she doesn’t know Africa is a continent, but she knew about the voting records of John Sununu and Jeb Bradley in the first place?

Hmmm. I guess that might be remotely possible if it weren’t for the fact that John Sununu has a 100 percent pro-life rating from the National Right to Life Committee.

Glad to see that whoever leaked this story is too dumb to come up with a plausible smear. And kudos to Newsweek for dumping this whopper without bothering to check if Sununu is in fact pro-abortion.
Oh, and by the way, Jeb Bradley isn’t running for U.S. Senate, as Newsweek reports. Perhaps they might want to check out Wikipedia before publishing the next batch of Palin smears.

  • Typewriterstreaming

Thank you so much for this post. I too was infuriated after reading the johnny come late to the party ombudsman. This statement is perhaps the most disingenuous “some readers complain that coverage is too poll-driven. They’re right, but it’s not going to change. The Post’s polling was on the mark, and in some cases ahead of the curve, in focusing on independent voters, racial attitudes, low-wage voters, the shift of African Americans’ support from Clinton to Obama and the rising importance of economic issues.”
Ahead of the curve???!!! Ahead??? Some of us call that undue influence. They are conveniently overlooking the impact of repeated hogwash stories which favored Obama and it’s incredible influence on opinion! What a sleezy pile of horse crap. They clearly continue to think we are all stupid, lazy, plug my butt into msm and think I know everything I there is to know citizens. This half hearted article of admission is yet another piece of bull. Let’s see how fast the msm is permanently positioned to champion the Obama administration. I am afraid this near honesty won’t last. We have got to keep on the media. If we don’t take back a free media this Country will never make its way out of the wilderness. Thank you again for this article.

Where was this beforehand? Friday night… Wanna laugh? Friday night, Charlie Rose Show, Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose.

ROSE: I don’t know what Barack Obama’s worldview is.

    BROKAW: No, I don’t either.

ROSE: I don’t know how he really sees where China is.

BROKAW: We don’t know a lot about Barack Obama and the universe of his thinking about foreign policy.

ROSE: I don’t really know. And do we know anything about the people who are advising him?

BROKAW: You know that’s an interesting question.

ROSE: He is principally known through his autobiography and through very aspirational (sic) speeches, two of them.

BROKAW: I don’t know what books he’s read.

ROSE: What do we know about the heroes of Barack Obama?

BROKAW: There’s a lot about him we don’t know.

RUSH: That’s Tom Brokaw. Grab number three real quick, Mike. Grab sound bite number three. Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose admitting they don’t know diddly-squat. All they had to do was assign a reporter! You had 18 months or two years to find out about the guy, just assign a reporter, Tom! You work at NBC News

    Dear Ms. Howell,

Too little, too late. Your lack of scrutiny and neglecting to report on serious issues of concern for years, has brought untold grief upon so many Americans, I would go so far as to say that all of you are complicit in the war in Iraq, have the blood of countless soldiers and Iraqi citizens on your hands and are as responsible as George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for getting us into those wars. Because of this we are now subject to the incompetence and outright fraud of a President Obama (as much as GW and DC are responsible). Your weak attempt at making amends in this article is insufficient for what you have done to America.

I know many moderate repubs and dems that are pro-life. That is not necessarily right-wing. Most Right-wingers get their abortion stance from the Bible. I don’t. I think it is a medial ethics question as to how fully formed IT becomes before the procedure is allowed. As long as the woman is not harmed.

I am probably stepping in it here, forgive me.

I guess it depends on how fully developed the baby is determines their position. Obama says that even when the abortion is botched it is still OK to let IT die. Does this bother PUMAs.

What is PUMAs stance on botched abortions? Try to save or let die?

Just curious. Hope I don’t offend anyone.

Lol, so the little deatheaters clamed that they were under lord obamamort’s spell huh?.

  • fluffy bunny

ignore it. I’m strongly pro-life but have learned to just roll my eyes at republican abortion hysteria. After all, one of its leading proponents, Romney advisor Doug Kmiec, jumped aboard the Obama express immediately after Romney lost the primary election.

Yeah, Kmiec just bleeds for the “rights of the unborn” if he could spend 6 months of his life campaigning for Obama and against McCain and Palin, right?

    ummm hmmm

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THINK ABOUT WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SPREADING THIS KIND OF CRAP ABOUT PALIN AND NEW HAMPSHIRE REPUBS WHO LOST

Can you say aides to Mitt Romney? I knew you could.

I went over to the Charlie Rose site and watched this entire program. It’s amazing that, after this bizarre exchange, they slip right back into the “yeah, we don’t know, but it’s ok … it’s “historic” … it’s “change” mode that has been the mantra of Obama supporters in the media all year long. The seem drugged and involved in some sort of share hallucination. When you watch this interview, Tom and Charlie seem so ultra calm about these admissions … as if they are very, very far away from it all.

And this sounds to you like a guy who’s in the tank for Obama?

Clearer heads might be inclined to think that Brokaw is attempting to instill a sense of fear into listeners about the man.

As he did throughout the campaign, incidentally. Did you not notice?

  • Mary Schroeder

Regarding the continuing attacks on Governor Palin: I remember how the attacks on Hillary Clinton continued even after they left the White House. There was a concerted effort to establish her in the public’s perception as a shrill, overly ambitious, and divisive woman. It stuck with a lot of people, as evident by comments from individuals throughout the 07 primary. I think the same kind of effort is at work on the Governor, to assure that she has a tainted image should she attempt to run for national office again.

  • Lynda-NoBot

I think they realize how powerful she is and they want to destory her so she has no chance of running for president.

This is OT, but it is what I said on this blog and others in recent days. The next thing to watch for is the fate of Patrick Fitzgerals, and then Barry and the rest of the fools here will have gotten away with everything again. Tony Rezko only has to wait a few years to be pardoned by BHO.

CHICAGO (WLS) — Barack Obama’s election this week will create an opening in the United States Senate.
Those who want the job are jockeying for position.
The decision on who will represent Illinois in the Senate is Governor Rod Blagojevich’s to make. But Obama friend and confident Valerie Jarrett is the president-elect’s preference.
Whether that is merely Obama’s personal opinion, or if he intends to lobby on Jarrett’s behalf, remains to be seen. After all, Obama has to focus on a national agenda and may not want to be seen trying to influence the governor’s call.

We also may see a battle joined between the Weekly Standard, which supported McCain, and the National Review, which supported Romney.

The NR was where most of the obnoxious Palin bashing was published over the last month or two…many of the NR columnists were hard core worshippers of Romney and were just furious that McCain chose Palin. It was absolutely disgusting.

Unfortunately the Weekly Standard has Fred Barnes, who is a total sack of inside the beltway sh!t that I haven’t been able to hold my nose and subscribe.

BUT if the Weekly Standard will get out fast and hard against these Palin smears, I may have to reconsider it.

Did anyone notice that ridiculous sign that was on the podium at Obama’s press conference…Office of the President Elect. HA! Does he not realize that everyone is laughing at him for that? It’s like that fake presidential seal that appeared on the podium that “one” time and then disappeared. What a putz. I didn’t hear the MSM say anything about it either. They still have their heads so far up his butt that they can see his tonsils. They are admitting to bias while still giving him deference at the same time.

    There are fundamentally two arguments.
    one that is legal…Pro choice.
    One that is religious…Pro life.

If a person believes in True Equality of the sexes then imposing controls on WOMEN ONLY should be held in contempt by anyone who holds that the state should not have that power over the life of the individual…
It cuts both ways…It gives the state the power to implement reproductive policy whether that be forced pregancies or forced abortions and population controls…This is the leagal argument behind Pro-Choice.
The religious argument is a legal fallacy and a distraction…and a successful one at that…imho…

What about late term abortions, botched abortions, or abortion on demand? For me it is a medical-scientific question, not religious.

The term pro-choice is vague. I don’t want to tell woman what to do but Medical-Science disallows certain procedure for ethical reasons alone, not religious.

“imposing controls on WOMEN ONLY” sounds like a straw-man argument. Are you saying that medical procedure should be totally unrestrained with no ethical oversight.

I believe in true equality of the sexes meaning equal rights. There can’t be true equality of the sexes, whatever that means. They have equal rights under the law. Men and woman are different.

Here is the info I have from an Obama Timeline regarding Jarret’s relationships…

In 1989, Obama works briefly at the Sidley Austin LLP Law Firm, as a summer associate from Harvard law School, where he meets future wife Michelle LaVaughan Robinson; she is his mentor at the law firm. Also working at the firm is Bernadine Dohrn (1984-1988), former Weather Underground radical, terrorist bomber, fugitive from the FBI (having achieved “most wanted list” status), and wife of fellow radical William Ayers. (Although Dohrn works for the law firm, her criminal record prevents her from being admitted to the Illinois bar.) [50,55,324]

Obama’s summer job at Sidley Austin is likely arranged by William Ayers and Ayers’ father, Tom Ayers, (CEO of Commonwealth Edison, 1975-1986). [259]

    1991-1992

In 1991, Michelle Robinson is hired by Valerie Jarrett to work for the City of Chicago, for $60,000 per year; Jarrett is rumored to be the likely chief of staff in an Obama Administration; she was born in Iran in 1956, to American parents, while her father was working there on the staff of the Nemazee hospital. It is said that Obama makes few major decisions without referring to Jarrett. [245,246,352]

These are the positions that Jarrett has had:

    Chicago Stock Exchange – chair
    Chicago Transit Authority – chairman
Richard M. Daley – deputy chief of staff
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago – board member
    University of Chicago – trustee

You can regurgitate what you learn in grad school. But the question really is can your analyze it and then apply it, can you investigate something yourself or do you believe everything you are spoon fed by your party and the media? so while i applaud your spelling abilities, you still have poor judgement. Is it sound judgement to know that person with no experience and who takes three tries to get a response to russia taking over Georgia to get it right and then vote for that person to run his country. Or allow someone to create national health care system when he doesn’t know what a child who has asthma uses for treatment and his wife works at a hospital. And why would you trust your personal safety and that of your family in the hands of a man whose on VP says he will be tested, and no matter how it was spun you have know that he said it would not happen if mccain was elected. then how about the fact that obama wants to bankrupt the coal industry when coal provides 50% of our energy, obama wasn’t to change your behavior as if you were a pigion pecking mozart for bird seeds ,are gas prices not high enough? is there not enough unemployement that we can just let miners and processing plants go under. Hey wca, serious suggestion. One of Obama’s promises was to create an “army of new teachers” … if he delivers on anything, this may actually be it. Have you looked into a teaching position? Most districts will hire you on a provisional basis as long as you go to weekend classes to work towards your license.

The pay is pretty good, and believe it or not, middle school students can be quite charming. And a great teacher has a chance of changing a middle school kid’s life. By high school the hard core devotees of Barry O’s favorite musical artists’ lifestyles are too far gone, sadly.

Well Fluffy Bunny I reside in the mildly fascist state of Texas and the Arts are considered a sort of non essential ( especially when compared to Football…chuckle…)
I have never considered teaching in the secondary schools as the legitimate classical curriculum would be so heavily censored by concerned and ignorant puritans that it is pointless to even engage…Better to wait until the young artists achieve adult status and introduce the rigorous classical curriculum ( It’s hard to teach figurative drawing if the models are aways clothed…and teaching aesthetics is impossible to do in a politically correct way…chuckle…)
As it is I have never fallen into what was fashionable…And so gave up on the Trendy Galleries since my ART wasn’t correctly tribal…And have given up on the college/University system since a classical curriculum with it’s attendant demands are not popular with students who expect to say deep and profoundly interesting things at 18 and hve no need to learn such disciplines as drawing and painting…much less anatomy…
Why bother?…We have Anime and Graphic novels…chuckle ( comic books in my day ) passes for avant guard literature…( sigh )

    I’ll see what develops…chuckle…But I’m not holdin my breath…

The good news is this…Barky and his movement have been very inspirational…I have been making some fine pieces that Barky and his fascists would probably classify as DEGENERATE…FASCISM IS SO INSPRIRATIONAL…

IMHO, the democrat PUMAs are now getting a taste of what it’s been like over the past decade + being a pro-choice and pro-gay rights republican. For that whole time, I’ve watched so-called “conservative opinion leaders” like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter savage good people like Christie Todd Whitman and Rudy Giuliani and John McCain as RINOs simply because they aren’t obsessed with what people do in the bedroom and women do with their bodies.

No matter that McCain has a 100% anti-abortion voting record…because he’s not a spittle-flecked screamer on abortion and other issues cherished by Coulter and her ilk, he’s a RINO. Coulter announced in Feb 2007 at CPAC that she would never support Giuliani or McCain. And she has legions of drolling males who worship her on the right, and to around extolling her virtues and “hotness.” I’m female, but I’ve never understood that.

If the Pro-choice argument is a strict legal one then it is clear that restricting access is prejudicial and outside the bounds of Responsible government and veers dangerously into abuse of power. Now the religious conservatives have successfully upended this argument to say they resent their tax dollars going to fund organizations that propose access to reproductive facilities that don’t jive with their moral agenda…
And so we are at the stalemate we are in where the two factions cannot come to terms amicably.
If Women as a unified faction can unite under the legal cause and draw into this faction those who oppose giving any government too much power then I think we can return to the business of rational and effective management.
Until males are willing to concede that this is the issue then we will be stuck in the morass of fallacious quibbling…
Here’s another way to look at it.
If the federal government will enact laws to sterilize at random every 3rd male…say from the age of 13 to 75…then by all means repeal the pro-choice laws…I mean if the power of the state is going to be that intrusive then lets be fair and apply it equally to both genders and you can put any ideological dressing on it you want…

It is for this very reason that I am opposed to the death penalty… Because I am opposed to the potential abuse of power of the state over the individual. It is also not humane in terms of mechanics and impractical both financially and as a social deterrant. But that’s just my opinion…To me they are similar arguments that have gotten caught up in the sway of popular rhetoric that abandons any real logic or investigation of philosophy and is dressed up in fallacious distractions that confuse in order to achieve a tactical advantage…
Democracy like philosophy and logic is hard work…ever evolving and messy…

  • Newly Independent

The MSM has cut their own throats with Obama and they know it. They were too damn greedy & short-sighted. They saw all of that money coming from the billionaire jerks in Obama’s corner and couldn’t resist throwing away journalistic integrity for him.

The MSM thought – and still think – that they would have the luxury of reporting Obama propaganda and treating longtime, loyal customers like s— through the election cycle. They figured once they got what they wanted , then they would maybe admit just a little bit to their blatant Obama bias to try to lure back all of those loyal dollars they’ve lost.

This is the beginning of the half-assed, empty, meaningless gestures that will be popping up in the MSM for the next four years. But every time Hillary and McCain supporters see Obama, they will be reminded of 2008.

    LOL…Gosh Fluffy I am too…I am Caholic…lol…..
    Here’s how I see it.
I am pro-choice because I don’t want the government to force me to abort or sustain…I want to be able to make that decision as an individual.
I also believe that the government has a responsibility to enforce oversight as to legislation to prevent abuse from any quarter that would harm…
I also have access through my faith to a confessor…and seek solace in trying to reconcile the two…As long as I focus on the legal argument I can live with the moral consequences because I am also an American who holds dear the constitution and the Bill of Rights. And as a Roman Catholic I know to well the danger of Theocracy as well as the danger of Secular Fascism…A delicate balance we have here in America…One worth preserving…

No. This is an orchestrated effort on the part of the media to destroy Sarah Palin.

Don’t you get it? She’s dangerous to the frat party that’s been going on in D.C. for decades because she does have the political courage to expose corruption and because Washington is literlly filled with it, the Washington insiders are scared to death of her.

It’s going to be up to the us citizens to defend Sarah and stand by her, while the power elites make every effort to destroy her. We need politicians like Sarah, if we ever hope to bring “real change” in our government(and I don’t mean obama’s bullshit of I will say and do anything to get elected kind of change talk).

We should commit to always responding to any and all attacks against Sarah and continue to build up support for her, should she decide to run in 2012 or any other leadership role within the republican party, for that matter.

We have to make it clear to those in D.C. that we are not going away and we have every intention of supporting any candidate that truly speaks for the people and understands that those elected by the people are intended to serve the people and that Sarah Palin is one of those people.

BTW, I saw an interview this a.m. with Swartzennager and a CNN guy and when the Governator was asked who are the new leaders of the Republican party, he mentioned just about every new guy in the party, but never mentioned Sarah. Very telling of what women are still up against when running for higher office.

The boyz in power still haven’t learned a thing and are obviously still frightened of any woman getting elected to high office and doing the job better than they have.

This is an interesting article written by a sociologist on obama the narcissist

“And that’s just the beginning of the diametrically opposed reactions to Obama that have deeply divided feminists, progressives, and Democrats, and pitted friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors, networks, interest group members and officials, former political allies, as well as demographic groups against one another. One of the things that keeps us so divided is that his devotees and even many of his converts seem to know so little about him yet consistently reject information that does not fit with their trusting view of him. Many pour out unprecedented—for “progressives”—nastiness, misinformation, and hatred to demean Hillary Clinton and now Sarah Palin, and to intimidate and even threaten those who don’t agree with them. Their bullying has dominated campuses, caucuses, and the convention as well as the blogosphere and media. “Truth squads” aim to silence anything but unqualified admiration.”

  • JozefAL

I’m not sure what you’re talking about regarding Thomas. The Dems went “nuts” over his nomination was because (like Obama) HE WASN’T QUALIFIED. Bush the First is reported to have wanted to nominate Thomas to replace Brennan (this was in 1990) but finally decided on Souter because he worried that Thomas hadn’t had enough experience as a Federal judge. Then, when Marshall decided to retire (in 1991!), Bush the First–who had wanted Thomas a year earlier for lack of experience–decided to nominate Thomas. (Oddly enough, the main reason Bush wanted Thomas before was to avoid the appearance of TOKENISM that inevitably came up. Bush and other GOPers believed that Thomas was the only qualified Black CONSERVATIVE at the time. Sounds pretty much like “tokenism” or “affirmative action”–the latter a phrase that Thomas had long opposed.) In the end, it was actually Democrats (who were in charge of the Senate) that confirmed Thomas. (While the GOP members voted to confirm by 41-2, the Democrats voted to confirm by 11-46, for a final vote of 52-48 to confirm.)
As to your comment about “the Republ were first to put a Black man on the Supreme Court”, I think someone needs a history lesson. LBJ (a Democrat) nominated Thurgood Marshall (the BLACK man whom Thomas would replace). The Senate approved Marshall’s nomination by a 69-11 margin (which means 22 Senators didn’t vote). When the Senate met in 1967 for the vote, the Dems had 64 seats compared to the GOP’s 36. The vote was 35 Democrats, 32 GOPers to confirm (I know that only comes to 67 but the NYT source, in a list of names in the roll-call vote, only listed 67 names on the “to confirm” side) compared to 10 Democrats, 1 GOPer against.

If you must blame someone for the election of Obama, let it be George W. Bush. Not only did he conduct a toxic administration for the election of another republican (even if it is McCain) he even made sure that the so-called economic melt-down happened so close to the election, there was no way McCain could have survived after that.

The mistake is to think the press is anything more than just another mediocre business entity, reflective of those who own it.

We make our mistake in expecting the press to advocate for the public, to act as independent thinkers, they don’t, they simply print what they’re told, they print what their bosses tell them to print, whether that boss is Cheney, or the guy who owns the Tribune.

It really doest function anymore as anything other than a flossy PR unit, it’s dull and predictable, for the most part.

But there is still some worth.

    imustprotest,

All the more reason to take Arnold on every chance we can!

If the republicans can say great things about Jyndal, the governor or louisiana, then they certainly can include Sarah with high praise, because she has been extremely successful in Alaska and has the highest approval ratings of any governor in the country. No elected official can achieve such high approval ratings from one’s constituents unless they are doing an exemplary job. Something that could never have been said about Obama while he was state senator and particularly, U.S. senator. Yet, no one questioned his “qualifications”! Such a freeking double standard and it must stop because the world cannot take any more power hungry, incompetent men!!

No matter how well a woman does, powerful men just can’t seem to acknowledge it. They’d rather destroy the world than let a woman run it, which is why our country and the world is in such dire straits right now!

  • Newly Independent

That is why Clarence Thomas was attacked so vigorously. The repubs were first to put a black man on the US supreme court.

    Just a slight correction. :-)

Thurgood Marshall was the first African American appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967 by Lyndon B. Johnson.

Republicans were definitely the first to appoint an African American man AND woman (Colin Powell & Condoleezza Rice) to Secretary of State. Bill Clinton appointed the first woman (Madeleine Albright) to Secretary of State & first African American (Ronald Brown) to Secretary of Commerce.

I absolutely know where you’re coming from though.

Democrats – I realized for the first time this year – thrive and survive on keeping most minority groups (especially African Americans) strung along to retain their power. I’ll be here all day talking about that.

The Democrat party does exactly the same with women. Just look at how often “Roe vs. Wade” was thrown up in our faces for example. Fellow Dems helped to rip Hillary Clinton to shreads, then got jealous because a Republican was willing to help another intelligent, tough, charismatic woman be elected to the second-highest office in America. So they resorted to threats of losing abortion rights, losing equal pay (even though it was proven that McCain paid his women staffers MORE than Obama did his), and the ultimate boogeyman – THE ECONOMY.

Sadly, the difference is that most African American Democrats stood their ground in the party and got Obama. (Though judging by what Obama’s done in Illinois he’s not going to do a damn thing for our community.) Most women in the party, however, either backed that Obama fraud from the beginning OR buckled to the threats & pressures from the Democrat leaders and didn’t get Hillary nor Palin.

Most Democrat women have allowed themselves to be bullied & suckered yet once again:

    - Obama doesn’t know nearly enough to fix the economy. And he will probably remain too arrogant to hire the people who can help to fix it.

    - Obama probably won’t appoint any decent women to meaningful Cabinet positions because he seems to hate women deeply.

    - Equal pay for women is dead under Obama now. He now has what he wanted – the Presidency. Through most women’s votes. His female supporters accepted the fact that his women staffers were only paid 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers were paid. So why pay women more now?

    And….

    - “Roe vs. Wade” will remain under serious threat. The U.S. Supreme Court is still predominately conservative, and is very likely to remain so for the next four years. Should a case make it to the Supremes that will overturn Roe (just like the D.C. handgun ban was this year), Obama can’t stop it. And he isn’t exactly crazy about women’s rights.

    Ain’t is great?

If I remember correctly, it was several years before some in the mainstream media starting admitting that “Yeah, we gave George W. Bush a pass”. I have a friend who was a stand-in for a female movie star in a film Arnie producing. The entire crew was in on his little fling with one of the make-up women. The story went that cutie pie was sitting on Arnie’s lap in his directors chair canoodling, groping, to the embarrassment of many (in Hollywood that’s not easy)on the set. • Idiocracy08

I’m pro choice to a point.

However, in this day and age, we should be having much much less abortions.

We have so many different kinds of contraceptives these days, including the day after pill – which I don’t consider abortion. With AIDS, we should be using more condoms.

Since I’m a woman, I’ve always felt like it should be the woman’s choice…it’s her body. But there is a baby involved, and I do think men have a right to their child too. The father of the baby might just want the child to raise.

On the other hand, let’s say the father doesn’t want the child and the mother does have the baby. The man has to give child support. If the woman doesn’t want the baby, she’ll just abort it. No child support.

Susan B Anthony was against abortions because back then she felt it was a way for men to control women. But today, isn’t it the woman that is controlling the man with it? We are talking about equal rights aren’t we? Fair to both sexes?!

This is almost 2009. We shouldn’t be having so many abortions. That should be considered “back woods….old freaky medical procedures” unless the mother is at risk.

Also, when you think about it…you could be aborting the kid who could grow up to cure cancer or something.

When I really think about the reason I’m pro choice, it’s because I knew that women were getting back alley abortions before it was legal and it was killing them. I knew it we would revert back to that.

I’m not going to stand up for women for awhile and here’s why:

They have to eat a bit more shit so that they can wake up and smell the coffee. I’m really annoyed at all the women who voted for 0bama and trashed Hillary and Palin.

Frankly, I don’t care if 0bama names one woman to his Cabinet. Ditto AAs. I want to see exactly how much shit these people are willing to eat before they choke on it and get mad. So I won’t be putting any pressure on the president-select.

    Let his true colors show.

On another thread I explained how Hillary’s staying in the race gave 0bama a pass with the msm and may very well have helped him more than any of her campaigning.

You have to give someone with this much narcisissm
and ego enough room to tear their own ass.

My initial shock/anger/despair/depression is already waning. I’m in patience mode and channeling Job.

My strategies for the time being are really pushing the post-racial/racism is over on AAs and not supporting women.

All the while watching events as they unfold and commenting as necessary.

What made me arrive at this state of mind was Republicans staying home. They didn’t want the WH this go ’round and there’s nothing we can do about that. Also, Latinos went 67% for 0bama. He also won the Jewish vote and the female vote. It wasn’t just the AA community.

What that tells me is that we were never able to make the case against him in the minds of the American voters. And without the msm, we lost.

But I’m not fooled. Pelosi’s remark about governing from the center is a clue. So was Howard Dean’s absence from the scene these last months. The Democratic Party is in disarray. Loyal Dems are not making contributions and so they are going to have to rely on these new voters. Pelosi, Dean, et al, know that the big money donors that bundled money are not their bread and butter. They will go whichever way the wind blows.

It was a tough and bitter pill to swallow at first, but 0bama’s first decisions made the pill digest a whole lot easier. Picking all these Clinton people is hilarious. CHANGE! LMAO!

I’m going to find one of those ‘change’ signs, wait and when everything goes south hang it in my window for laughs.

Yes, this is going to be good.

The argument against abortion is neither religious nor fallacious. In fact, your argument in favor of abortion rights is a fallacious. Trying to frame it as a women’s rights issue or an issue of “choice” is the true distraction. The issue of abortion is about life and death of an innocent human being, not CHOICE or WOMEN’S EQUALITY. If the unborn child is human, then abortion is murder. There are laws against murder in every state and they are not framed as “religious” based laws. People are not given a “choice” if they want to murder their spouse or neighbor, etc. Furthermore nobody with any intelligence would make the argument that murder should be a choice because not allowing it would be the same as forcing people to murder each other. Your entire post is complete nonsense.

Hillary Clinton took far more hits than Sarah Palin has even encountered thus far.
From the C word, the B word, pimping Chelsea, everything was up for grabs.
It doesnt make it any less wrong when it is done to Hillary, Sarah or ourselves.
We thought we had overcome much of the ugliness that came to the forefront during this election. We thought that those men who are in power would be role models to our nation of young men, they failed miserably, nothing has changed.
Although it was ugly and hard to look at, it has told us much about the types of men and women we are electing to run our government.
If we cant count on our own leaders to say enough is enough, stop this sexism, stop tearing down those women who have done so much for our country, some much more than any man we have put into office, yet by their silence they condoned those actions.
We could not even count on our women in office to stand up for women.
We need to rid our government of all those who are too busy working on their own agendas to speak up.
We need to make the DNC accountable, the MSM accountable, and our government officials accountable. We can do this by voting them out of office one by one, turning off our televisions and not watching those stations that condoned and even got a kick out of this sexist behavior.
We need to quit buying those publications that printed those words that our most prominent women were called.
We have the power, lets use it before Obama takes our rights away one by one, and we no longer recognize our Constitution.
