Three Presidents and their dogs

Even on the question of the White House dog, Obama has no solution to offer.

What say you?

Just pick a member of the press, say like Chris Matthews, as thev’e been Obama’s puppy for the past several years already.

Jesus Christ…I thought this was a joke when Pat had the doggy thread. Someone actually had the lack of smarts to ask about a dog…our economy is on the skids, two wars, people nervous about the future and what do we get? A non answer about what kind of dog he’s going to get. That reporter needs her credentials yanked and then force her to cover small local dog shows.

We’re all in the dog-house when it comes to Obama.
    On a lighter note…..
Looks like Biden got booed at last night’s Eagles/Giants game.
Maybe there really does need to be a re-count in Philly.

We know all about joe the plumbers personal information, we heard all about how much the gop spent on Palin’s clothes, and at his first president-elect press conference obama was asked and went in to detail about what kind of puppy he wanted.

Obama planning US trials for Guantanamo detainees

WASHINGTON – President-elect Obama’s advisers are quietly crafting a proposal to ship dozens, if not hundreds, of imprisoned terrorism suspects to the United States to face criminal trials, a plan that would make good on his promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison but could require creation of a controversial new system of justice.

During his campaign, Obama described Guantanamo as a “sad chapter in American history” and has said generally that the U.S. legal system is equipped to handle the detainees. But he has offered few details on what he planned to do once the facility is closed.

obama “offered few details details on what he planned to do once the facility is closed” because he did not have to offer details. The fawning “liberal media” was too busy swooning over crotch shots and white washing and papering over the holes in everything obama.

  • oowawa

My suspicious mind tells me that this was carefully planned and rehearsed. His invocation of the word “mutt” was the payoff: a mutt is lovable and non-threatening, and not a snobbish aristocrat dog. The term is brought forward to calm those who are nervous about his “mixed breed” black-white ancestry. He’s really safe, cuddly, okay, acceptable to take into your loving family. Very clever nuance. Very manipulative.

  • benny

This is a major decision for obama. I’m sure that hundreds of his advisors are looking into the dog-issue. A very complex issue. Its worse than the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And the economy is nothing compared to the predominant dog-issue. Just hope the chose dog ‘One’ doesn’t bite the president-derelict in the a**.

Nixon’s “Checkers Speech” is known as one of the great deflections in American political history:

Nixon, having been accused of accepting $18,000 (about $140,000 in 2007 dollars) in illegal campaign contributions, gave a live address to the nation in which he revealed the results of an independent audit that was conducted on his finances, exonerating him of any malfeasance. The money, he asserted, did not go to him for personal use, nor did it count as income, but rather as reimbursement for expenses. He followed with a complete financial history of his personal assets, finances, and debts, including his mortgages, life insurance, and loans, all of which had the effect of painting him as living a rather austere lifestyle. He denied that his wife Pat had a mink coat; instead, she wore a “respectable Republican cloth coat.”

The one contribution he admitted receiving was from a Texas traveling salesman named Lou Carrol who gave his family an American Cocker Spaniel, which his daughter named “Checkers.” [2].

  • wodiej

well what do you expect?? millions of people were more interested in Obama’s persona than his substance. I feel sorry for whatever dog has the misfortune to live with that family.

Maybe the moronic mass will eventually awaken from their American Idol stupor and see what is going on.

They should be vetted by PETA or ASPCA before allowed to own animals…and the animals should have the right to refuse adoption.

  • Pat Racimora

Well, yes, sort of a joke, except that if this is done right the Obamas will get a shelter or rescue dog, and that might encourage others to do the same (with hopefully the right motivations).

In the meantime, Grumpy Old Guy is truly a creative joy so I don’t care what he talks about. I just love to listen.

On the other hand, I am kind of hoping NOT to hear about Molly and Socks.

Unreal! (BTW, the link doesn’t work)

This shows us what we’ll be seeing from the Big O. On one hand, our country is in such desperate straits that I think it’s imperative that this man show some sort of spine and decisiveness. However, I really don’t expect too much of The One. This is, after all, a guy who never worked a day in his life for actual PAY. I never dreamed that this country would be in this kind of mess!

I noticed, btw, on his press conference, the first syllable he uttered was ‘Uh’. How very appropriate.

  • hadenough

A look around the news shows obama is gonna do hundreds of wonderful things. Yet during the primary and election we heard no specifics about anything. ‘Hope’ is not a plan. ‘Change’ to what? The “liberal media” allowed obama to remain a blank slate everyone who wanted to could project their own hopes and dreams on. I don’t the press did obama a favor. Jan 20th the rubber meets the road. The oborg will meet reality.

no open thread this morning, so please forgive.

a very interesting, if lengthy article on Illinois US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, who prosecuted Rezko and Libby (separate prosecutions, of course) and whether Obama will keep him. All with info about Rahm Emmanuel’s role in the Chicago scum machine and the exposure of O himself.

Why wasn’t this published before the election?

Here is the first paragraph of the story:

    The Fate of Patrick Fitzgerald

    To Reappoint

The big question here…in this citadel of the national Democratic party (the nation’s oldest political machine) and the home of the walk-on-water messiah…is whether a ramrod-straight Irish Catholic federal prosecutor will reappointed by President-elect Obama. If so, Patrick Fitzgerald will continue to prosecute more members of the bipartisan combine which runs this town and state. For now, he is a distinct threat to the man known as Richard II, Mayor Richard M. Daley, the Democratic apparatus here including the governor-and very possibly Obama. So don’t hold your breath that his service will be renewed by our reformist president.

Okay OT but…this scares the hell out of me. Oh my God…so OVomit’s going to PAY for TERRORISTS to be brought here to be prosecuted to the tune of 100s of Millions of Dollars, maybe more…but we can’t have HEALTH CARE. ROFLMAO…Wow…tick tock, tick tock OVomit…Gee all the folks waiting for Obama’s ride on the WELFARE EXPRESS are going to have to wait until he’s done coddling the terrorists we imprisoned. If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying ATTENTION!

Terrorists Will Now Be Treated As U.S. Citizens

By SP Editor at 10 November, 2008,

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama’s advisers are quietly crafting a proposal to ship dozens, if not hundreds, of imprisoned terrorism suspects to the United States to face criminal trials, a plan that would make good on his promise to close the Guantanamo Bay prison but could require creation of a controversial new system of justice.

During his campaign, Obama described Guantanamo as a “sad chapter in American history” and has said generally that the U.S. legal system is equipped to handle the detainees. But he has offered few details on what he planned to do once the facility is closed.

Under plans being put together in Obama’s camp, some detainees would be released and many others would be prosecuted in U.S. criminal courts.

A third group of detainees — the ones whose cases are most entangled in highly classified information — might have to go before a new court designed especially to handle sensitive national security cases, according to advisers and Democrats involved in the talks. Advisers participating directly in the planning spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are not final.

The move would be a sharp deviation from the Bush administration, which established military tribunals to prosecute detainees at the Navy base in Cuba and strongly opposes bringing prisoners to the United States. Obama’s Republican challenger, John McCain, had also pledged to close Guantanamo. But McCain opposed criminal trials, saying the Bush administration’s tribunals should continue on U.S. soil.

The plan being developed by Obama’s team has been championed by legal scholars from both political parties. But it is almost certain to face opposition from Republicans who oppose bringing terrorism suspects to the U.S. and from Democrats who oppose creating a new court system with fewer rights for detainees.

Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor and Obama legal adviser, said discussions about plans for Guantanamo had been “theoretical” before the election but would quickly become very focused because closing the prison is a top priority. Bringing the detainees to the United States will be controversial, he said, but could be accomplished.

“I think the answer is going to be, they can be as securely guarded on U.S. soil as anywhere else,” Tribe said. “We can’t put people in a dungeon forever without processing whether they deserve to be there.”

The tougher challenge will be allaying fears by Democrats who believe the Bush administration’s military commissions were a farce and dislike the idea of giving detainees anything less than the full constitutional rights normally enjoyed by everyone on U.S. soil.

“There would be concern about establishing a completely new system,” said Rep. Adam Schiff of California, a member of the House Judiciary Committee and former federal prosecutor who is aware of the discussions in the Obama camp. “And in the sense that establishing a regimen of detention that includes American citizens and foreign nationals that takes place on U.S. soil and departs from the criminal justice system — trying to establish that would be very difficult.”

Obama has said the civilian and military court-martial systems provide “a framework for dealing with the terrorists,” and Tribe said the administration would look to those venues before creating a new legal system. But discussions of what a new system would look like have already started.

“It would have to be some sort of hybrid that involves military commissions that actually administer justice rather than just serve as kangaroo courts,” Tribe said. “It will have to both be and appear to be fundamentally fair in light of the circumstances. I think people are going to give an Obama administration the benefit of the doubt in that regard.”

Though a hybrid court may be unpopular, other advisers and Democrats involved in the Guantanamo Bay discussions say Obama has few other options.

Prosecuting all detainees in federal courts raises a host of problems. Evidence gathered through military interrogation or from intelligence sources might be thrown out. Defendants would have the right to confront witnesses, meaning undercover CIA officers or terrorist turncoats might have to take the stand, jeopardizing their cover and revealing classified intelligence tactics.

In theory, Obama could try to transplant the Bush administration’s military commission system from Guantanamo Bay to a U.S. prison. But Tribe said, and other advisers agreed, that was “a nonstarter.” With lax evidence rules and intense secrecy, the military commissions have been criticized by human rights groups, defense attorneys and even some military prosecutors who quit the process in protest.

“I don’t think we need to completely reinvent the wheel, but we need a better tribunal process that is more transparent,” Schiff said.

That means something different would need to be done if detainees couldn’t be released or prosecuted in traditional courts. Exactly what that something would look like remains unclear.

According to three advisers participating in the process, Obama is expected to propose a new court system, appointing a committee to decide how such a court would operate. Some detainees likely would be returned to the countries where they were first captured for further detention or rehabilitation. The rest could probably be prosecuted in U.S. criminal courts, one adviser said. All spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing talks, which have been private.

Whatever form it takes, Tribe said he expects Obama to move quickly.

“In reality and symbolically, the idea that we have people in legal black holes is an extremely serious black mark,” Tribe said. “It has to be dealt with.”

It looks like Obama will do something for everyone. For the left, the right and the center. We’ll just have to pay the price for all of those nice things expected to occur. Yet, I don’t think anything will get really done.

Expect Guantanamo to be close but it will not be. It will be half closed and half open.

What else do expect him to do? Whatever that is it will be done half way and half way remain undone.

2012 campaign. Change we need to finish. Hope without end.

  • jrterrier

and the blank slate personna is for real. yesterday i read a story where apparently the President of Poland understood after talking to Obama that he supported deploying a missile-defense shield to protect the former Soviet republics and others under Soviet domination. Shortly thereafter, an Obama spokesperson “clarified” that Pres-elect-Obama had not yet determined his position on this point. I wonder how long it will take for the world’s leaders to realize that the O talks out of both sides of his mouth.

The only thing people will wake up to is more violence in the streets, more robberies, more criminality. Obama will keep sending messages to his supporters from his campaign lists, directly out of the WH. He will create a tight hordes of supporters willing to tackle any form of dissent here and abroad. Obama will be likened to a God all over the world. He will rule by sending messages from the WH to supporters and operatives worldwide. FISA will be used to suppress any dissent against his supporters here and abroad. Those who oppose Obama will be listed in a ‘no fly’ list worldwide and be monitor 24/7 for every telephone and internet message they produce.

Obama is a Constitutional professor so you do not have to worry about a thing. He will create a special court by Executive Order from the dictatorial powers given to him by the Constitution.

But only half the cases will be brought to the U.S. The other half will remain in Guantanamo for at least 4 more years. Closing Guantanamo will be part of the 2012 campaign including his trip to meet with Cuba’s President.

If the “whitey tape” becomes available (the Obama campaign, by claiming that the words were misunderstood, actually confirmed its existence) I certainly hope that it is never released. After watching that waste of human protoplasm masquerading (and now “unleashed”) as a Catholic Priest, Father Pfleger, over the weekend, it is clear that the release of any “whitey tape” would meet with nodding approval from the O-Bots, and would further solidify their support for the Obama tag team.

Does that mean they don’t believe in Santa Clause? That is such a fun American tradition for children tied to the celebration of Christmas and the birth of Jesus…..
