ANATOMY OF A DIVIDER: PART 1A. WHY OBAMA CANNOT UNIFY

This excellent post was written October 22nd, and has been updated to reflect the current reality. It was cross-posted at www.lynettelong.com.

Imagine yourself at the podium talking to a huge crowd, and the words on the teleprompter say things like: "This is the moment that the world is waiting for. . ." or, "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions." How do you pull it off? Maybe you flash to Peter O’Toole as Lawrence of Arabia, running across the top of a train shouting, "Acaba! Acaba!" with stirring music underwriting your every move. Even so, something in you hesitates at throwing your full self into such grandiosity. Something healthy in you that feels it’s just too way over the top. Besides, isn’t it up to other people to say whether you are a transformative figure?

That something in you that hesitates is not present in some people, such as Barack Obama. When he proclaims that, "we are the change we’ve been waiting for," he goes full tilt with a straight face and no embarrassment. Those caught up in his rhetoric feel like they are part of the "we," and that they are going to be part of something big and wonderful together. Others of us get an unsettling sense that even when he says "we," it’s all about him, quite singular. We don’t sense individuals in a crowd relating to him (as we do, for example, when Hillary Clinton speaks), but a fused entity lost in him. He is not offering to  serve them or fight on their behalf. He is proclaiming that they can become part of him. Many of us get an eerie chill because this is the kind of messianic promise made by cult leaders, not politicians.

And that’s just the beginning of the diametrically opposed reactions to Obama that have deeply divided feminists, progressives, and Democrats, and pitted friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors, networks, interest group members and officials, former political allies, as well as demographic groups against one another. One of the things that keeps us so divided is that his devotees and even many of his converts seem to know so little about him yet consistently reject information that does not fit with their trusting view of him. Many pour out unprecedented—for "progressives"—nastiness, misinformation, and hatred to demean Hillary Clinton and then Sarah Palin, and to intimidate and even threaten those who don’t agree with them. Their bullying has dominated campuses, caucuses, and the convention as well as the blogosphere and media. "Truth squads" aim to silence anything but unqualified admiration.

This is not politics as usual. How can we explain the depth and ferocity of opposing views about a man who portrays himself as a uniter? What is unleashing such widespread animosity and bullying? Is there something about the candidate himself that is inherently divisive?

When a situation has lots of pieces that don’t seem to fit, I look for a lens that can make comprehensive sense of them. In this case, we can get part of the way there via Alinsky-style "community organizing" which Obama says is the best education he ever had. This explanation dovetails perfectly with another that takes us deeper and makes sense of diametrically opposed perceptions and reactions: the anatomy of the candidate’s "self-system." The hypothesis advanced here is that his self-system appears to be organized by "narcissistic personality disorder" (NPD). The NPD lens can illuminate the structure and dynamics not only of the candidate but also of his campaign and the roles of the key sets of players. That is the focus of this article which has grown into two parts: why Obama cannot unify, and how he has divided us.

Having first engaged seriously with NPD 30 years ago and integrated it into my interdisciplinary work, I find the term "narcissist" can be a valuable tool when it is not tossed out casually or without a clue that the self-centered-ness to which it typically refers is merely the tip of an iceberg. We need to dive beneath the surface.

When we do, we discover that NPD is a defective way of organizing the self. Rather than growing around a core, it is cut in half and has no center. The ensuing hollowness and fragmentation explains why "NPDs" lack empathy and authenticity, and have difficulty standing by a principle. It’s also why the psychiatrists who first began recognizing this pattern referred to it as the "as-if" personality. Non-professionals who try to figure out NPDs invariably find themselves
encountering masks and personae, and puzzle over what lies beneath them. Where is the "real" person? Where is the "real" Barack Obama?

They will never succeed in finding him. The devastating truth about NPDs is that there is no "there" there. Nothing substantial and real lies under the masks. There are only masks.

But there is an invisible anatomy beneath the masks. It makes sense of what otherwise doesn’t. It shows us how the pieces fit together and why NPDs are inherently divisive. NPD is not uncommon, and it comes in variable degrees and with different overlays. We’ve all paid an enormous price for not recognizing NPD the last time around. Bush, too, claimed to be a uniter. Despite the disaster he has perpetrated, the Democratic establishment and most of the media have learned absolutely nothing. They can’t wait to do it all over again.

I, on the other hand, being a sociologist, tend to look beneath the surface to social and behavioral processes and the meanings they enact. I have been appalled by what it reveals about this campaign. I am perhaps even more disturbed by the feeble degree of interest and outrage among so many Democrats about these processes and what that bodes for our future. My allegiance is to neither wing of the corporate party nor their candidates, but to getting at the truth—the only basis for any of the
things we say we value.

The issue of divisiveness initially came into focus during the spring because, despite his rhetoric, Obama’s campaign and captive media kept hammering Clinton as "polarizing," and, along with the DNC, as "dividing the Party." How could a candidate who kept getting stronger and winning all the swing states be seen that way—unless, as we now know, the playing field had been rigged before a single vote was cast? This claim had legs, however, because it built on the old shibboleth that Hillary is polarizing. Really? What has seemed obvious to me for the past sixteen years is that Hillary is just the Rorschach onto whom has been projected our culture’s polarizing ambivalence about women, especially powerful women, a deep ambivalence that is carried by many women as well as many men. Not only was Hillary getting a phoney bad rap, but, equally troubling, why were so many voters unable to see through the media narratives to discern that the Obama campaign, their bloggers, and their captive media were the ones generating extraordinarily hateful vitriol and divisiveness?

When I began this piece in early August, we could still hold out the hope that the pledged and automatic delegates could resist the monumental pressure and intimidation to choose the eminently qualified woman over the unqualified man—and of course, as most people don’t know, they nearly did on Convention Wednesday until they were quashed. Although the short-term electoral context has changed, nothing changes the absolute necessity of untangling the modus operandi of this campaign. Liberal ideologues will consider my critique heretical while I consider their singularity and suppression of other narratives dangerous. I’m in the business of deconstructing false narratives and exposing what goes on beneath them—the job our defunct Fourth Estate failed to do.

Forming a Self: the Right Way and a Wrong Way. To understand NPD, we need to see the invisible structure beneath the masks. The kind of structure in focus here is mental: how we represent images, feelings, and experiences and organize them into a pattern or structure. Because we filter new experience through that structure, it becomes a self-reproducing system. The most basic of these structures is how we configure the self.

Gaining a sense of self while also learning about relationships and boundaries with others is the big task of an infant/toddler. When this goes well, "I" develop a sense of "me" and "you" in relationship with a realistic internal boundary separating us.

• Someone organized by NPD never got that right. Instead, the young narcissist-to-be lays down a different primary pattern: good/bad.

• The profoundly disturbing implication is that his self has no core or center from which to grow himself. Instead, he has two halves split off from each other. They don’t "talk" to each other. His self-boundary is in the wrong place. It divides him in two rather than drawing a line between himself and the other.

• What gets really crazy-making is that both halves of "me" get mixed up with "you" (i.e., my mental representations of you). Both halves cut right across self and other. "Good me" conflates parts of you and of me, and "bad you" conflates different parts of you and of me.

• The mixups enabled by his mislocated boundary lead to unending projections and reversals that are inevitably destructive, and make our heads spin when we try to untangle them. That’s why it is so important to slow them down and have some guidance for how to see their strange anatomy.

To add to our difficulty in seeing through the spaghetti maze, NPD is a deep structure which can be overlaid by later developments and adaptations that obscure its operation to many observers. The bright NPD can use his charm to "pass" with people who aren’t used to looking deeper, and in situations that do not threaten his faulty structure. Things get very nasty very quickly, however, whenever his "stuff" kicks in. That, not his surface adaptations, is my focus here. I begin with half of his faulty self, what the literature refers to as the "Grandiose Self."

Grandiose Self. The surface presentation of the Grandiose Self may be extremely charming, polished, even charismatic. He has a sense of entitlement and an appearance of great independence. Beneath his
grandiosity, however, lies a sense of emptiness and hollowness. How can he not feel hollow when he has no center?

Rather than learning how to "feed" and take care of himself, the NPD’s sense of entitlement leads him to expect to be filled up emotionally and supplied by his admirers. His Grandiose Self requires a steady diet of admiration, applause, and other supplies to feel alive, real, and good; anything less than wholehearted approval may be experienced as criticism. When the applause stops, the narcissist deflates like a balloon.

Beneath his grandiosity and entitlement lies the hidden structure of the NPD’s Grandiose Self. It conflates three streams into the "good" self who the narcissist considers himself to be:

(a) realaspects of himself that he "owns" as being "who I am";

(b) qualities he idealizes and claims for himself but does not in fact embody; and

(c) mirroring aspects of other(s) which feed his fantasy of himself by reflecting the only image of himself he identifies with and will accept and which he appropriates as part of himself.

What’s wrong with this structure? First of all, the narcissist lacks the normal tension between who he is and his ideal or fantasy of himself. That tension is essential to realistic self-perception. Presidential candidates do not normally claim that the other party’s administration is handling Gustav better than Katrina because they are following "my recommendations."

Once we know about that conflation, we are not quite so surprised by the Obama mantras about the world waiting for His Coming. That conflation also explains why the speaker of such words shows no embarrassment in speaking them, or in demanding a Greek temple stadium or the Brandenburg Gate, or usurping a presidential seal for his podium. He feels entitled to these venues, symbols, and much more. When called on it, he does not feel shamed. No acknowledgment of his gross inappropriateness will be forthcoming, only a denial of his intent when turned down ("The Brandenburg gate was only one venue we were considering") or denial of our interpretation ("We never intended to use the seal for more than one occasion"). It’s like a cat who has misjudged a leap: "I intended to change my position in precisely that manner." Yet a cat knows she is pretending; the narcissist doesn’t.

Given the absence of a center and the fragility of the Grandiose Self, narcissists are defensive, thin-skinned, and lack a sense of humor about themselves. This may not at first appear obvious because they conceal their lack of humor and humility with preemptive, inoculating statements about themselves. ("They’ll try to scare you and tell you that I’m ….." the stump speech intones.) But underneath: how dare anyone criticize! Or worse, poke fun.

Nothing hurts a narcissist more than ridicule. Mockery and even simple questions can trigger "narcissistic wounds" that lead to retaliatory behavior—especially if they churn up some truth he is trying to hide. No surprise then that following an acerbic cartoon cover of the presidential pretender and his wife, there was, according to Dana Milbank, no room for the New Yorker on the Europlane.

Obama’s conflation of fantasy and reality is readily observable in his representations of his polygynous father and his union with his mother. Barack, Jr. has created a mythic birth for himself that rearranges facts, events, and time, including the Selma march (four years after he was born!). His inability to represent his parents’ relationship realistically is merely the beginning of fabrications, distortions, denials, and coverups about his birth, childhood, schooling, family, and chunks of his adult life. Like many others, I am concerned about not only what he is hiding about himself, but also his still being a prisoner of his internal family drama.

From the Black Republican Association – Guess he didn’t unify AAs entirely either….

      White Guilt Emancipation Declaration

We, black American citizens of the United States of America and of the National Black Republican Association, do hereby declare that our fellow white American citizens are now, henceforth and forever more free of White Guilt.

This freedom from White Guilt was duly earned by the election of Barack Hussein Obama, a black man, to be our president by a majority of white Americans based solely on the color of his skin.

Freedom is not free, and we trust that the price paid for this freedom from White Guilt is worth the sacrifice, since Obama is a socialist who does not share the values of average Americans and will use the office of the presidency to turn America into a failed socialist nation.

Granted this November 4, 2008 – the day Barack Hussein Obama was elected as the first black president and the first socialist president of the United States of America.

Everyone is writing a lot of dire warnings right now, because nobody really knows how Obama will govern. Makes sense to me that people are fidgety.

He sounded very determined to deliver on key promises made in the campaign, which is OK. At least he is suggesting that he will have some integrity in his administration, and that not everything was Greek columns and BS.

        We’ll see.

I think the one GOOD point about his election is that the country will give him an opportunity to perform. McCain would never have been granted such a period.

It’s unreasonable to not give a change in administration such a window.

One thing I didn’t like about Obama is that I never saw him as a real Democrat. The loading up of his staff with Clinton Dems signals to me, anyway, that he’s adopted the party.

Now, in my opinion, he has to ignore Pelosi and Reid, who I personally find far more dangerous than anyone. Good grief, I can’t stand them.

I’d much prefer what I’m seeing…..a good solid group of Clinton Dems running the White House.

And if he puts Hillary in as SoS?

        Icing on the cake.

Wow. Ten seconds ago I was on the phone with my mother discussing this exact subject. She went alone to dinner in Dallas at her favorite neighborhood place. Some woman literally got up in the bar and started jumping up and down screaming “We just elected our first African American President.” She was nuts. My mother had JUST been talking to the bartender in the restaurant about how much they hate Fraudbama and can’t believe this happened. Two completely different opinions but soooo far apart. My mother decided she couldn’t even eat, paid her bill and left.

When we spoke of it it was about the Great Divider that he is. We would have loved to share the joy jumping up and down with that woman about this moment in history, and an AA President. Not this one.

Hssien and Michele obama both appear to have a sense of entitlement for what they got through mass deception. They have no shame of modesty about i ll , as if American people had to just give the WH to them and they are entitled to it/

Yes, Obama is a narcissist. And they suck the life out of everyone around them because everything is about them. Drama? We will be worn out by the daily Obama-Dramas.

    • Hard Bop

You mean, like we’ve been so far during the transition?

I love how Obama-haters get all hot and bothered over their own predictions of what Obama will do.

Hard Bop–and yet you and your ilk can’t seem to stay away from this site. Perhaps it is because deep down you know we are right about your NoThereThere selected President. Admit that you were duped. The truth will set you free.

        • Northwest rain

When a bot starts to realize that they were duped — the will first deny — and that’s why they come here.

They think that if we hardcore realist can be turned to the Koolaid — that perhaps they can cling to their illusion for just a while longer.

Those in denial can become very abusive — I’ve seen it with Nixon’s true believers — and with the bush followers. Now we have the leftists — who may be even crazier that the right wing true believers.

Good grief — the bots are coming out of the woodwork — and they are screaming, like toddlers laying on the floor, kicking and screaming.

          • SteveS

Bear with it just a bit longer. It has to burn itself out before much longer; this level of exuberant adulation cannot be sustained, and his core will be displayed as empty.

          • Tricia

            My opinion:
I don’t believe they were duped, I think the folks who voted for Obama didn’t really care and they knew. It seems to me that people voted for a man who is clearly not ready and gave no solid answers as to who he really is (6th graders noticed it – but grown up people didnt- thats a lie they knew). They voted for him because they think that a minority as President will help race relations. I also think these folks felt safe voting for him cause he’s half white and speaks well. I these folks are the biggest racists of all.
My Opinion – I got some news for my fellow African Americans voters I think that many of the white people who voted for Obama are the most giant racists of all. I dont trust these frauds, I think they’ll be the first to turn on our President because they only voted for him for one reason.
It’s really sad, very sad that many of these white folks who voted for him based on the reasons listed above are really ignorant .
Mark my words it will be “we” the voters who voted against him that will stand up and defend him because of honor and respect.
You see we knew he wasn’t ready and we knew that Mr. Emmanuel, Zbignew and others are really the force behind this entire scam. These are the guys telling Obama what to do. They are running things.
We will see a shift from Iraq to Afganistan (not an end to war as promised but a sneaky quiet shift). The Obama voters will pretend that its not happening until maybe 2011 and we get close to next Pres. Election and then suddenly the cool aid will go poof and disappear and the claws will come out of these same white voters who voted for Mr. Obama in 2008. And bam they will turn on him. Why” I’ll tell ya why because in thier eyes they will have achieved some crazy stupid goal and then they will vote him out. These people scare me because they are full of S…. and they put an entire nation at risk to serve some crazy cause that only makes things worse.

I did not vote for Mr. Obama but he is our (my) President and when these animals who voted for him turn on him – it will be the rest of us who defend our President from the smears….
And they (the folks I refer to above) they are vicious look at what they can do an example: G. Bush.
So when you see white people jumping up in praise (no at this time) just keep in mind these are really the ignorant… and in a few years they will be the first to turn…..
            My Opinion……..

        • Kal

Good thing the bots are coming here for the truth. Better pierce through the denial someday, somehow, than to remain locked in fantasy land along with BO and his delusional family/’not friends.’

I felt all along that Obama seemed to have a personality disorder. At first I just thought he was naive, immature and that he had not resolved his identity. For example, why did he choose to identify with the father who abandoned him and whom he never knew?!

Really he was abandoned by both parents. I think that his grandparents really did give him a lot. I just think that he was too damaged already by then. He was 10 years old. However, I also think that without them he could have ended up a lot worse – as a drug dealer or something.

I did not want him working out his issues on our time.

    • bethtopaz

He actually is a drug dealer: dealing the hopey-changey powder – that his cult followers and addicts are snorting up their noses and shooting up their veins on a regular basis – sending them into some kind of mindless nirvana, until they need their next fix.

      May God Almighty help U.S.

A good follow up to this article would be about the psychology of the enablers or Kool-Aid drinkers. Why do they let themselves be duped?

    • BerlinBerlin

He decided to love his father, because he was a myth, not a real person.
It is much easier, than to love the mother with her human flaws.
We had a person in our circle (he passed) that also adored his father who was far away and also higher in society.
His mother that raised him and gave him all she had was rejected.
He had major woman-hate issues and a strange obsession to buy only expensive stuff.
We only found out after his death that he was raised in a very tight financial situation.
As I write this I see quite some similarities to Obama, only that the friend actually was good at something (music) and had built and run his own company.

    • OldGrumpyGuy

They say that traumatic damage done before the age of 6 never really heals.

    • C.S.

The man known as Obama is not young; he is close to 50 and yet the myth that he is a “young man” goes undisputed even by teenagers and college kids. He has lived almost a half century; a half century filled mostly with wars, genocide and starvation.

He was here for the major terrorists attacks upon our country from 9/ll, the World Trade center bombing in 1993, Pan Am 103, the attack on the CIA headquarters in Washington, D.C.; the Chinese shooting down and holding hostage airplane and crew, the USS Cole bombing – all that has shaped our country we now live in.

And yet he has no empathy; it is as if they did not touch his life. Like GWB, he has a child’s comprehension of these events and we don’t need someone representing our country who can only see events as they apply to him; dictators do that. Leaders see events in terms of how they harm or help the country they love. And appointing Clinton “people” to positions will not help because their work will be judged by the same man who judged the Clintons and frankly, I believe they will only last long enough take the blame. It is the Soertoro/Obama way.

  • Mr. X

What if Obama is appointing Clinton people to the cabinet just to fire them? Isn’t this what Polesi means by flushing the swamp?

Obama is someone that uses the divide and conquer approach. He means to split the electorate exactly in two and then act as the victim so that just enough will switch to his side. Divisiveness is l’ordre du jour. And he has the attitude of shutting down any kind of dissent. His entire essense of being reeks of divisiveness.

    • http://www.marklevinshow.com/ Seattle Moss

      Mr X.
I have heard this argument all day. I agree it’s risky for anyone especially Hillary to give up her senate seat for a chance in an Obama administration.

My gut says go for it Hillary. She already has succeeded in every way possible in NY and on the campaign so being on the world stage could only enhance her prestige

      • Fran

I’m coming over to your thinking on this.

        • PKJayne

He can’t get away with that.

My mother is a big Clintinista. I love the Clinton’s but voted Mccain to show my disgust with the DNC. My mother caved when it came down to getting in the polling booth. She actually said to me she would have voted McCain if it hadn’t been for the dopey Palin lady.

When I proded her she couldn’t give me examples of Sarah being dopey, just maybe she had watched too much SNL and listened to co workers. I replied well Mom I hope you like picking up Dog crap in the park to get your SS check.

The point being he can not crap on Hillary or Clinton supporters twice and go on to tell about it.

The buck has to stop somewhere.

Hillary and Bill could make a mint on tour, and I have been wondering why she helped Obama as much as she did. Bill as well. They owed him nothing but the disdain I feel for him.

NO way! It is all a chess game for NoThereThere. This is how he intends to “flush out the swamp,” as someone just mentioned.

      • SteveS

Taking on SOS in the Obama Administration will be a career-killer for Hillary. Most cabinet secretaries do not survive the entire Presidency, and then they wind up working for a think-tank somewhere. Is that what you want for her?

I think that she will be a much better, much more notable, much more effective leader from a postion where she can set her own agenda and priorities.

      • ownaa

        SeatleMoss

That where you are wrong. when was it ever Hillary’s qualifications for any job in question. We all know that she is much qualified than any one else during the election. But still they forceably removed her. she will be the best one in the adminstration but that will never register with the masses because they only have ears to what the msm tell them. They will lie about what she did like they did during the primaries and that all the people will know. IT IS A BAD IDEA.

      • csuzeq

I have decided that Hillary as SOS means a safer country, while it lasts. I was concerned about this ending her career in a damaging way, but now I will think about the country and not Clinton. This would be great for America and the world, as would McCain as SOD. When it mattered, Hillary played politics instead of pulling out all the stops to keep her promise to her supporters. she chose to keep her promise to Barfy and the Do Nothing Committee instead so let her play politics and further her career. Hopefully she will stand up to Odrama whe he goes all insanity about Israel and makes friends with Armedinajhad.

We can’t worry about Hillary the person anymore. she stopped doing that when she sold her soul to the devil for political gain. Now she can have that gain.

I hate to say it, but these are all politicians guys. We do not have one who is for the people anymore. We had one, but she left us at the end of August. she wasn’t willing to risk her political career to do the right thing, but she is willing to risk her career for more power. We have to face that by now. And no, don’t go all, Hillary will be POTUS someday. That is over. She gave it up to Odrama for some reason. She cannot run against him in 2012 and in 2016 she will be too old because to the media will assault what they will label as “the old bag” and as we have seen, American/Chicago politics is not about who has earned a job.

    • Kal

I totally agree with Mr. X. Pelosi/Reid/BO for sure do NOT really want Hillary all of a sudden, and they are psychologically incapable of thinking that they need either her or Bill.

So, the only game must be to lure them in and then shoot them down, allege some breach of something, manufacture some ‘proof,’ create a scandal — something that will be very hard to fight against, especially once that Senate seat is filled by appointment and not by election.

Even if Hillary can’t be Senate majority leader, even if she can’t have a special health committee, even if she is just an ordinary senator, she will have more swag than anyone else in the Washington crowd, and can set her own agenda, not get landed with BO’s twisted agenda, and can bide her time.

      Hillary asap!!

Rather than growing around a core, it is cut in half and has no center. The ensuing hollowness and fragmentation explains why “NPDs” lack empathy and authenticity, and have difficulty standing by a principle.

WOW. Great read. So much to chew on. The projecting is key. The lack of healthy boundaries is glaring.

Thank you, mydress, for the info.– I thought maybe, since he threw Grandma under the bus during the primaries, she wasn’t important enough for him to care.– But then, this wouldn’t have surprised me either, given the fact only HE is important, and nothing else.

      • C.S.

Most Christian religions place emphasis on attending funerals as a sign of respect and love. This says a great deal about his character that he couldn’t be bothered to even show up. Maybe his grandmother wasn’t religious but I doubt they just let the coroner disposed of the body and, as “good Christians”, he and his wife should have wanted to be there.

His business-as-usual attitude toward his last remaining relative’s death (except for half siblings he barely acknowledges)shows a callousness that will translate to his obligation to We the People because we’re just a bunch of strangers he has no respect for.

Great. The wing nuts put a psycho in office. Ughhh….WTF?

    • Kal

This NDP analysis is very useful, but there is another dimension to it — the whole addictions thing.

I have always felt that Bush’s inability to do anything but lock himself up in a fantasy world in which he was slaying the dragons of Al Quada because that is the sort of thing a lot of not-really-healed alcoholics do. Political power seems to have simply taken the place of excessive alcohol; it provides the same insulation from reality, lots of buffer zones, a way to feel ‘good’ by doing something, etc.

As the campaign unfolded this time around, I thought that a lot of the grandiosity of BO’s style of speech, use of self and others as symbol, not to mention the odd and disconnected cultural symbols of Selma, MLK, JFK — all the ‘keys’ on the piano of greatness as he sought to express it — came from his use of cocaine for apparently some time. If he is another not-interested-in-healing addict headed to the WH, we are in for another rough ride as he looks for the biggest pieces on the board to move in the most possible dramatic and ‘good’ way possible. ‘Cause he can’t actually solve the real problems of anybody.

And to help shore up his empty hurting inside, he will need to destroy all of those whose own greatness might overshadow him in history. I’m thinking that he for sure will bear Bill and Hillary no more genuine good will or gratitude than he ever did before, so I think they may well be his main short-term targets.

And I expect to see a slow demonization of Israel and deification of the whole Arabic world, not just of Palestinians.

      Hillary asap!!!

      PUMA!!

  • ILBlue

OMG . What an outstanding article. I didn’t realize until I started typing that I sat with my mouth open the entire time I was reading it.

So well written, so easy for the un-College educated, like myself, to fully understand.

    And so true.

The ones of us who just can not fathom how people can listen to his speeches and be blown away? I keep saying ” Are you kidding me, Man?” That’s just doesn’t make sense !

And this is why I am obsessed because I feel unless he continues to get this adoration we could really be in trouble. I can not trust this man, I can not get over the hateful things he has said and done that others want to ignore.

How will he deal with world leaders , will he give them the finger if they point out something he has done that they disagree with? I guess I would have to hope that is the worst he will do.

As you said this country , co-workers, family members, spouses etc. are divided deeply .

I’m not a natural , worrier but I am where he is concerned.

    • jbjd

That’s what I don’t get. How could people not have made that parallel? If you give the finger to the former First Lady, now a sitting U.S. Senator, because your response to interviewers’ questions exposed you for a fool, in front of her; why wouldn’t you give the finger to a foreign leader, in whose presence you are again exposed as a fool?

      • Tess

My understanding – actually I saw it – is that while the O was thanking McCain for a well-fought campaign, he gave McCain the finger too.
Way to stay classy, Boorak! I kinda like that. Boorak.

  • Ellen D

I’m tired. I’d just like the truth. Someone, somewhere, in a US or foreign intelligence agency knows the truth about this guy’s birth and childhood and school records. I just hope it comes out somehow so everyone in the U.S. can deal with the reality, not the myth that they fell in love with. Otherwise everyone is just building on quicksand and that can’t be good.

    • PKJayne

Ellen that is what I have been waiting on.

      Somebody knows the truth.

    • http://www.anvp.typepad.com/soldier4hillary soldier4hillary

I feel your pain. On one side I have the hope and belief that these things are not true and there exist a really good reason behind why no one has answered the questions about his birth and records.

For me I can’t even fathom that this is true no matter how much evidence or proof that is provided that raise questions. It has never been just a simple question about “just show it”. There is not even the simplest remark like “well if it comes out later” or “if another country has the info” that is even important.

You have people that say ridiculous remarks about how much rioting will happen and how my fellow AAs will be so upset etc etc. Those things mean absolutely nada, zilch, nothing. Anyone using any of those as a excuse is just plain ignorant and small minded. Even more, a word, I hate to call people. But just plain stupid.

If any of those things were true it would literally CRIPPLE this country. That would mean nothing, I mean nothing he would sign off on as president would be valid. Nothing.

If we were to get attacked, how would he be able to sign off on anything? Any orders? Promotions for Commissioned Officers? Invalid. I could go on and on with scenarios but everytime I see people discuss this they always talk about black people “rioting”. As a black person myself, and in the military, it simply amazes me that anyone wouldn’t grasp the global impact as well as how it will affect us defense wise.

I might not of voted for him and yes, the questions people have made in regards to this makes me curious and I hope there are reasons that are beyond my understanding for why it has not been resolved or acknowledged.

But no one would ever put a president in office that was not fully eligible and not fully documented natural born citizen. With zero questions to there eligibility. No changing the constitution to fit there needs.

We will not have a sitting president with eligibility questions. Not only would we not be able to govern as a country and nothing valid, it would obliterate our world standing with other countries. There is no good legitimate reason that exist on earth for anyone to even attempt to give why we would have someone who wasnt eligible to become president actually became president. I struck this from my list of concerns after the Dems nominated him.

I doubt very highly they would be willing to go to jail for the rest of there life and have a label like that following there names for eternity. Hell people deployed would be flying back to the states on there own dime saying “f$ck it I am ready to go home and just leave. Orders would be null and void and can be used like toilet paper. Shit even I would be stuck after my medical board and radiation therapy and surgery was finished. That is why I always leave out the birth crap as a legitimate reason to dislike Obama because those rioting comments are equivalent to disney world compared to the actual hell on earth, literally if it was even remotely true.

      • /www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibsP6XN2dIo&eurl trixta

Biden would be the defacto Prez if BO is not eligible — at least, one hopes that this is the case and that a shadow government is not lurching in the wings when the proverbial shit hits the fan.

  • caligirl

The California action was filed by Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation on behalf of Alan Keyes, the presidential candidate of the American Independent Party, along with Wiley S. Drake and Markham Robinson, both California electors.

“Should Senator Obama be discovered, after he takes office, to be ineligible for the Office of President of the United States of America and, thereby, his election declared void, Petitioners, as well as other Americans, will suffer irreparable harm in that (a) usurper will be sitting as the President of the United States
, and none of the treaties, laws, or executive orders signed by him will be valid or legal,” the action challenges.

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen

The petition is a request for the Superior Court of California in Sacramento County to issue a peremptory writ barring Secretary of State Debra Bowen “from both certifying to the governor the names of the California Electors, and from transmitting to each presidential Elector a Certificate of Election, until such documentary proof is produced and verified showing that Senator Obama is a ‘natural born’ citizen of the United States and does not hold citizenship of Indonesia, Kenya or Great Britain.”

It continues with a request for a writ barring California’s electors from signing the Certificate of Vote until documentary proof is produced.

All he has to do is show his vault birth certificate — created in 1961 — typewritten etc.

Such a simple thing to request — ALL of us here have had to produce our valid birth certificate numerous times during our lives.

He wants to be President without presenting a valid copy of his original BC.

That is not much to ask for.

But a Narcissist sees no need. Also notice how he lies with ease — and he expects to get away with his lies.

I’ve been saying for months — that He has no core values — and he is not an empathetic person.

Others have noted that he has no sense of humor.

Oh and he is extremely vindictive — he will be getting even with Hillary Clinton and John McCain for as long as they live.

Ironically his wife seems to have a similar Narcissistic personality. She feels that she is owed — and yet I fail to see what she has done — other than figure out how to get rich and live in a mansion.

You know, I’d read a few more articles on that “blow-out.”

The actual statistics are just now being reviewed and commented upon by thoughtful writers. The youth? Did not turn out any more than in the past. A mandate? McCain took the white majority voters by 14 points, and that’s even with discouraged Republicans staying home. The huge voter turn-out? Failed to materialize. Less than 1% difference from the last election.

So unless Obama is stupid, and even I don’t think that, he’ll take note. He’s definitely on probation with the American voters.

This is a great article–thanks! I am wondering what happens when the NPD does not get the adoration, as will definitely happen sometime in this administration. Self destruction? Fellow Business Executives:

As the CFO of this business that employees 140 people, I have
resigned myself to the fact that Barrack Obama will be our next President, and that our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way.

To compensate for these increases, I figure that the Clients will have to see an increase in our fees to them of about 8% but since we cannot increase our fees right now due to the dismal state of our economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been eating at me for awhile, as we believe we are family here and I didn’t know how to choose who will have to go.

So, this is what I did. I strolled thru our parking lot and found 8 Obama bumper stickers on our employees’ cars and have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem. These folks wanted change; I gave it to them.If you have a better idea, let me know.

        Sincerely,

First of all, the narcissist lacks the normal tension between who he is and his ideal or fantasy of himself. That tension is essential to realistic self-perception. Presidential candidates do not normally claim that the other party’s administration is handling Gustav better than Katrina because they are following “my recommendations.”

“I don’t think anyone can deny I have the ability to inspire people.”

“My debates aren’t up to par because I like to think about the answers, that process is what makes me such a great writer.”

    “I think I’m a pretty cool dad.”

(Referring to himself while talking to his law students): “Barack Obama, now there’s a good looking guy.”

Good article. In the New Yorker’s post-mortem of Obama’s “flawless” campaign, the one time they were caught off guard was when Hillary, then McCain made fun of his big crowds. Very telling. They just didn’t think the screaming Germans would be material for ridicule.

  • /www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibsP6XN2dIo&eurl trixta

The NPD person can’t take mockery. Obama has given the media and entertainers their marching orders when it comes to mocking him. Is it any surprise that the enabling liberal comedians have declared BO off limits?

I say this IS our weapon for exposing this ever so naked Emperor.

One question though, how do psychiatrists treat NPD? Is it even treatable?

Grandiose Self. The surface presentation of the Grandiose Self may be extremely charming, polished, even charismatic. He has a sense of entitlement and an appearance of great independence. Beneath his
grandiosity, however, lies a sense of emptiness and hollowness. How can he not feel hollow when he has no center?

Rather than learning how to “feed” and take care of himself, the NPD’s sense of entitlement leads him to expect to be filled up emotionally and supplied by his admirers. His Grandiose Self requires a steady diet of admiration, applause, and other supplies to feel alive, real, and good; anything less than wholehearted approval may be experienced as criticism. When the applause stops, the narcissist deflates like a balloon.

Artemis — thank you for this amazing article.

While I am no sociologist, my instincts have been telling me the same thing about this man for the better part of a year — his grandiosity masks the hollowness underneath — without adoration, he caves in at the center.

He is a well-marketed souffle. It is not physically, or mentally or emotionally possible for such a person to provide strong leadership. Since 100% adulation cannot be forever given to any effective leader — this leaves him with only two choices — to squash those who would criticize, or to keep changing his positions in order to please.

I am very sad to say, that is not a good prescription for a leader.

Danger: can Sarkozy and Gordon Brown exploit his narcissism? Can he give up the adoration of Europe? Or will he sell out our country just to keep the crowds in Berlin chanting his name?

he only won because of the timing of the meltdown. Swing voters blamed the meltdown on Bush (rightly) — but once Americans get a taste of “fallen superpower” status, expect a resurgent nationalism and ‘Putin’ envy in the USA. ‘We The People’ won’t give a damn what Europe thinks. We’re not going for that ‘internationalist’ bullshit. But he’ll still need that global adoration. I think he’s already a lame duck.

It appears he never registered with SS as required by law, that the records now on file for him were probably created in 2008 by some inept bureaucrat/friend of Obama. Was his failure to register because his birth certicate would have revealed his citizenship status, or some other reason related to NPD? And he’s going to be the Commander in Chief of our military? I trust Hillary to be savy enough to make the right decision if Bobo offers her the job. And no one could be more suspicious of him than Bill, and I’m sure Hillary will consider his counsel on the matter.
If Bobo gets past the lawsuits and gets inaugurated, our one hope may be that he fully realizes his responsibility and knuckles down with common-sense measures. There’s unfortunately no sign of this yet, given that he hasn’t even shown enough horse sense to go to grandma’s funeral. I’m glad that other people have spoken about the highly suspicious nature of this man’s background, because I often feel like a tin-hat lunatic-fringer obsessing over nebulous conspiracy theories! My husband is retired and watches a lot of political discussion and news on TV and has heard NADA about the funeral! Could it be there is a different senario to this that he is just a puppet. Yes he has the personality defects but someone else is pushing the buttons. Just go back and study him all his acheivements were at best questionable(academics). Then he moved into politics and systmaticly any one or thing stood on his way was removed one way or the other. Ususally for some one to muster that kind of power in the past must have had a strong famillial background which is not true here. I don’t know why I so immuned to his charm, but I don’t see or hear that greatness and power in him to produce all what the article suggest. I am afraid to realize what or who exactly is pushing the buttons.

“Could it be there is a different senario to this that he is just a puppet.”

I’ve been suspecting the same thing. The good luck he’s had in his political career is uncanny.

Is it plausible that he hasn’t been vetted by the FBI/CIA for eligibility? I don’t get that at all.
The one action of showing his birth certificate would quash all the ineligibility rumors. So it begs the question why is it sealed?

the goal of propaganda, and any non-fact based literature is to de-sensitize the reader/viewer to anything that would remotely challenge the myth being delivered.

a repetitive and wide-scale attack on reason, thought and judgment basically disarms the reader/viewer with the cognitive tools to discern fact from fiction.

once comprised, denial usually can only be broken when the reader/viewer is confronted with a personal circumstance that forces him/her to come to terms with facts, and also the coping mechanisms in place to maintain that alternative reality.

I have been a psychiatric nurse for most of my long career. It is true that BO is a pathalogical narcissist but he also has several other of the personality disorders, such as borderline personality disorder which is very difficult to deal with. A person can exhibit several of them at one time. They come in clusters and a person can have a cluster of them and even a combination of clusters. I would have to be a psychiatrist to actually diagnose him. He is a very mixed up soul and definately not one to be ruler of the free world. To me BO is a VERY dangerous man!!

I saw a documentary on Body Language and Voice Interpretation on The History Channel recently.

Regarding Obama, they pretty much stuck to his oratory and voice and concluded that his rhythm and rising cadences had a hypnotic affect on his listeners. This substantiates another past NoQuarter article (or was it a comment) that cited a study about how Obama incorporates a variety of hypnosis techniques in his presentations.

Mr. Obama became the president-elect of all the Americans last week. No man’s coffee tasted better on Wednesday morning than it did on Tuesday…no woman’s perfume smelled sweeter. But all over the world, people felt better about themselves, as if the human race had achieved something important.

At least a McCain victory would have caused the press to hold its tongue. Instead, commentators drew all the wrong conclusions and made fools of themselves. Some thought it meant America’s redemption from the sin of slave trade. Others saw a historic transformation that they couldn’t put in words and shouldn’t have tried.

“They did it. They really did it,” wrote the Guardian. “… [T]he American people yesterday stood in the eye of history and made an emphatic choice for change…” It’s the “End of the National Nightmare,” said TIME magazine.

Amid the effervescence came the French. Obama’s victory “arouses a wild yet reasonable hope,” claimed Bernard-Henri Levi in the Financial Times. Mr. Obama’s election will affect us in “at least three concrete ways,” he continued… a decisive turning point in dealing with the ‘racial question’ in the US… hope for an America that began doubting its “famous mission”… and with Obama representing the USA, “anti-Americanism… will have a harder time surviving and it will be forced to revisit its sales pitch.”

Nobody knows what America’s “famous mission” is – certainly not the Americans themselves. And if those are his ‘concrete’ ways, we’re glad Mr. Levi is not building bridges. There was nothing concrete about the hopes Mr. Obama’s victory arouse. Just the contrary…they are all in the ether.

They shouldn’t let French philosophers comment on American politics; they take the whole thing far too seriously. Besides, you never know what they are talking about anyway. But Le Monde saw it clearer. Not only was the paper happy to see the United States finally rinse the stain of racism out of the Stars and Stripes, it was glad to see Americans give free market capitalism the flush too.

Obama will be “reviving the role of regulation in the U.S.; [devising] tax policies to smooth out increasingly wide socio-economic divides; planning a health-care system appropriate to the country’s wealth,” said the paper. In other words, he will be putting in a system of state-directed capitalism, just like they have in France.

None of the commentators we read really understood Obama’s triumph. They saw it in a yearning for truth and a stretch for progress. It was nothing of the sort. The last thing voters want is the truth; they will reject it if it is put in front of them. Instead, what they want is diversion from the real world. What they hope to get from their leaders is a kind of entertainment…in short, a fantasy. Something to cheer them up when they are down. Or something to give them a fright when they are up.

You’ll recall from last week, the last period of Great Calamity – 1914-1945, with its wars, epidemics, Dust Bowls, hyperinflation, Great Depression, mass murders, bankruptcy and revolutions. It was in the middle of this period that Americans elected Franklin Roosevelt, who told them they had “nothing to fear but fear itself.” It was all in their heads! It was a whopper, but it was the whopper they wanted to hear.

And then, on right side of the Atlantic, Britain chose Winston Churchill as prime minister, in May 1940. Churchill crossed his fingers and put his hand behind his back immediately, claiming that Britain was not fighting to save its overseas empire, but to “save the whole world.” He promptly kicked out any official who was “exercising a disturbing or depressing influence,” that is, any who dared to tell the truth about Britain’s disastrous military situation.

Just weeks later – in France, after suffering the most humiliating defeat in their history, the French recalled an old man to power, Philippe Petain. The hero of Verdun made the French feel that they had just regained their national glory, not just lost it. But at the time, France’s fantasy seemed on more solid ground than Britain’s…which just goes to show how unreliable history can be. Sometime make-believe becomes real; usually, it doesn’t. Britain got the backing of the Roosevelt administration – which had promised voters to keep America out of the war – and beat the huns; Churchill died a hero. Petain died in disgrace.

Today, in the U.S.A., the Bush Administration has worked hard to make people fearful – with its torture chambers and preposterous “threat levels.” But the terrorists wouldn’t cooperate; they failed to blow up even a trash truck. Alas, now the mob sweats – and for good reason. People are afraid of losing their houses, their jobs, and their retirements. Losses in equities worldwide top $25 trillion. In U.S. housing alone, some $4 trillion has disappeared. That’s why Obama won; it has nothing to do with national redemption or Sarah Palin. When the world was safe and plush…the mob wanted to feel the frisson of danger. What the public wants now is safety: a movie with a happy ending, not a horror flick. Obama appeared the calmer, more intelligent, candidate. Voters could imagine him as the “black Roosevelt” giving soothing fireside chats and telling the lies they most wanted to hear.

And so, in the national narrative, one cockamamie bamboozle takes the place of the one that went before. Americans were supposed to be fearful; now they are supposed to be confident. They were supposed to be racists; now they are supposed to colorblind. They were supposed to defend free market capitalism to their last breath; now they turn to the state and beg it to protect their last dime.

Excellent article, thank you. Puts a tangible issue on and behind that mask. He can’t keep it up forever, imo. And when a narcissist falls, he falls hard.

Well, all the speeches are over, so let’s hope the President-elect can demonstrate he also has substance too. He at least deserves a chance to try.

Not sure what you mean about the truth. I’m not an Obama supporter by any means, but I think Hillary’s statement about a vast right-wing conspiracy while she defended her husband’s deceptions was pretty polarizing. Of course, she’s done an effective job of putting her finger up to test the direction of the wind, but this new Hillary you are talking about is really pretty much political expediency on her part, isn’t it? I was shocked to see her drinking in a bar but do you really think that didn’t have political play? Come on, get serious. Your assessment of NPD and how Bush exhibited that quality falls flat considering the transparency of his personality surrounding the 9/11 event and the fact that he had a quite excellent economy for 7 years, for which he has gotten no credit from you folks. We were doing fine economically until the Democrats precipitated the economic downturn by refusing to support drilling and by means of ACORN and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac which are all Democratic controlled organizations. Are we really being objective here? I’ve got my problems with Obama and agree that he is not a uniter…his problem will be how to unite a country around socialism and fascism. I, for one, won’t get a beautiful collective moment over his policies because I know the damage and decline that they represent. The only way for Obama to be a successful President is for him to embrace free market principles and since we know he won’t that means his Presidency will be a failure…pure and simple. If you want to analyze his personality, ask how it is that a person could get elected President by appealing to prejudice against the rich, hatred of the rich, envy, military withdrawal, reduced military spending and negotiating with terrorists. Then you could look at the rise of Hitler and get some parallels.
