TONIGHT on No Quarter Radio: Sins of Omission with our new host, Paulie Abeles + Open Thread!

TONIGHT on No Quarter Radio: Sins of Omission with our new host, Paulie Abeles + Open Thread!

paulie-bDr. Lynette Long needs to concentrate on her health at this time, and can no longer do her No Quarter Radio show, simply so she can cut back on her many obligations. We are so sorry to lose her important voice for women. But, there is good news too: Last week, Dr. Long asked her friend Paulie Abeles to “sub.” Paulie proved to be a true professional! Special thanks to Dr. Long for finding a great host. Paulie has agreed to be our new permanent host. We’ll miss you, Dr. Long, and we’re rooting for you!

So, NQR is proud to present Sins of Omission on Monday nights, from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m., our weekly call-in show about politics and sexism, now hosted by Paulie Abeles.

Paulie is especially interested in receiving your telephone calls. So, call (347) 677-0792 and ask Paulie a question or share your comments. Here’s the description Paulie wrote about her new show:

“Join Paulie Abeles of Real Democrats for a weekly call-in show “Sins of Omission”— aimed at giving listeners insight into the topics of the day beyond the nightly news.

Each week the show features interviews with newsmakers and an opportunity in the second half of the program for listeners to call in and ask questions. [MORE below]

PAULIE’s BACKGROUND:

In 2008, Paulie Abeles co-founded (with Marilu Sochor) Real Democrats, a 14,000 member volunteer organization determined to combat media bias and sexism in the election.

She has appeared as a commentator on FOX, the Jon Stewart Show, ITN, AOL and numerous radio programs.

A graduate of Smith College, Abeles started her career on the trading floor at Salomon Brothers, served as Executive Director of the Freight Forwarders Council of America and Advertising Director of Stars & Stripes.

Abeles is currently a free lance writer and lives in Maryland with her husband and two sons.”

Join Paulie on Monday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET for her weekly call-in show, Sins of Omission.

To ask questions or share your points of view, please call (347) 677-0792.

The show is transmitted through your computer speakers, not a radio. You can listen while you do your email or chat with other listeners in the NQR chat room. Sign up this afternoon BlogTalkRadio.com so that you can log in and join in the chat room.

[WHEN THE PROGRAM IS OVER, you may listen to the archived show or download the show to your IPOD or ITunes subscription.]

NOTE TO ALL READERS from Susan: FOR THE SAKE OF EFFICIENCY and ENSURED ACCURACY, I am taking the previous week’s promos, and moving them up a week. So you will see OLD COMMENTS below. Just skip past those, and write your own comments. (besides, sometimes it’s fun to see what we all were writing about a week ago.)

Great topic! It’s way paste time that women are given the respect they are due in all walks of life.

    • Doc99

Here’s a tough one from Volokh.com: Is Sen. Clinton ineligible for Sec State? What say you?

      • C.S.

I think the selection in 2008 has convinced all but a few die hards that one thing our government, and the two political parties that make up that government, agrees on is that the “rules”, the laws, and the Constitution does not apply to them.

Whether or not Senator Clinton is “eligible” to be Secretary of State depends upon that same select group that decided she was not “eligible” to be President of the United States no matter how many votes she received. This political “game” of jocking for appointments will not be decided on merit but payback without any input from We the People.

  • harper

nice effort. Unfortunately it seems most women are OK with being second class citizens.

    • Pennsylvania Red

This was the low self-esteem election.

Folks in Pennsylvania must enjoy being called “Bitter clingers” cause they voted for 0bannion. And the self esteem of Western Pennsylvanians must be especially low because they re-elected a man who called them racist rednecks.

And the female vote goes without saying…

    • Winston

More women would be elected to higher office if we would simply take away their right to vote. That is the only way that they will ever get equal representation. ;)

  • snosandy

I can’t wait till Dr. Long’s book about the election! It is the one election book that will be on my bookshelf.

    • elise

It’s good to hear Dr. Long is writing a book about this nightmare. I hope it will be released before Christmas because I can think of at least five women who need to read an expose’ on sexism and it would make a Christmas gift to remember.

I am so tired of the fight, but I can’t seem to surrender to the status quo and save my energy for other fights. So many years trying to convince women they are worthy of more has made my throat threaten to close up on me if I have the conversation with one more person, but I can’t stop. So much pain this year when realization came of how bad it is and how acceptable.

I am so proud to be a woman. My mother, my sisters, my daughter, my granddaughters, friends, Hillary, and other accomplished women have reinforced my pride. Too often, they have undervalued themselves.

I know I am obsessive and I’m tilting at windmills. Just trying to get recognition of the problem seems impossible. I hope Dr. Long’s book can make a real difference.

    • cc

I didn’t know dr. long was ill, I hope she feels better soon. I sincerely appreciate all Lynn’s hard work and hope she does not give up this fight. she was an amazing voice of strength throughout the entire 2008 campaign.

  • TeakWoodKite

Great show. Thanks for hosting it NQ.

  • bob

Honest question here: how would women like to be shown the respect they deserve? Make the same money as men? Hold the same power positions as men (CEO’s, President, etc.)? And how will we know when this is accomplished? First woman president and 50% of the CEO’s in the country?

    • noproblama

      50% of CEO’s? I doubt it. That’s a greed position many women wouldn’t want.

Case in point; because of malpractice insurance and other factors making it harder to make a killing being a doctor, (no pun intended) not to mention it’s just damn hard work, women currently make up 48% of med school enrollees. Men are obviously looking elsewhere for a variety of reasons and opening slots.

Women generally don’t have a slash and burn attitude towards career and that will always be a factor in a free market economy. But not getting equal pay for equal work is despicable and inexcusable.

      We can start there.

      • bob

And end where?? Assuming an equal pay amendment gets passed, will that be sufficient or will there be another step?

        • http://ezinearticles.com/?Three-Basic-Parenting-Styles&id=744499 Northwest rain

Trolls are all alike — sexist pigs.

It is the EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT.

Women do not have equal standing with MALES in the US Constitution.

  • Deep Truths

    A bit off-topic:

Last night the ‘ladies’ were representing to the hilt, but you could hardly tell that when you google for it. Jealous, fellas?

    • Deep Truths

Duh, sorry…last night at the American Music Awards. The ladies were smoking…the guys duds…guess who receive the headline press? Yep, tired Kanye West and some obnoxious retro Jonas Brothers.

Rhianna, Beyonce, Alicia, Maria Carie, Pussycat Dolls and other female artists were out of this world.

  • http://uk.yahoo.com/?fr=fptb-bt Josie

Can’t wait for Dr Long’s show tonight (although I listen tomorrow morning as I am a Londoner.

Can you believe that on the BBC’s Woman Hour today, they had 3 female panelists who laughed about Obama making HC SOS. The general feel was that it was a great move by him as he needs ‘to keep her close’ and that she was going to create a lot of trouble for him because her views differ hugely from his! This is on Woman’s Hour! I wanted to cry…. but I sent an email to complain.

  • Jackarooty

Well, since this is an open thread here goes…

CNN just posted an article written by Luci Baines Johnson younger daughter of LBJ. The article is about how her father and MLK created the opportunity for Obama to become president.

Funny, when Hillary talked about LBJ’s hand in civil rights during the primaries she was accused of demeaning MLK and playing the race card.

Where was Luci during the primaries?

    • bob

Did she say if she was a Hillary, Obama or McCain supporter?

      • Jackarooty

She didn’t say anything other than she voted for Obama assuming in the general election.

  • Linda C.

People really don’t get it. Hillary and Obama are not that far apart because Obama is an opportunist. All of that political speech about being a “new kind of politician” is the oldest stuff in the book. Obama gets people to believe that he is one of them, even though he makes no firm stands or commitments. He is anti-Israel to get those people’s votes just as easily to turn and be pro-Israel to get their votes. In the end it is status quo.

I don’t know where the netroots got this “Peace President” when he was talking about a surge in Afghanistan. Obama is the Great Bamboozler” because people obviously want to be bamboozled. Look at those who voted for Bush and Reagan. However, are the American people going to get any benefit from this particular bamboozler versus some of the other ones we have had.

From the propaganda of the MSM to the sexisim to using the race card to threaten riots if BO didn’t win to the manufactured crisis of the 700 billion bailout at exactly the right time to Clinton accepting the SOS position under this horror of a president, this nightmare continues and now the Messiah’s infrastructure plan–can this country survive the frat boy administration that’s taking over(not to mention Caroline Kennedy’s interest in being a Senator, God, when will the myth of that crazy family be debunked.) We needed expertise, judgement, honesty and leadership and what did we get? A man who won because of the color of his skin.

Incredible. BO’s pick to run the EPA:

    Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility

Washington, DC —The track record compiled by Lisa P. Jackson as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection should disqualify her from serving as the next head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, says Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). In many instances, Jackson embraced policies at DEP echoing the very practices at the Bush EPA which Senator Barack Obama condemned during the presidential campaign.

Why don’t we just admit it. We don’t have the power to stop this machine. The Clintons have made it more difficult for us to stop this man. If Hillary and Bill would have just stepped aside, maybe, maybe, we would have brought all these issues to the media and the media might have reconsider to print it. We lost. It is hard when you see a statue over 100 feet built to honor this man, it is difficult when we have our golden girl and Bill breaking their asses to make sure that he is in the office. I have fought this war for over two years and I am tired. If by now, the media has not shown his birth certificate but instead build a statue of 100 feet to honor him instead, you can just forget about fighting to dismantle him. He reminds me of Bush. 8 years of the democrats and liberals trying to dismantel him and nothing could be done. So, if some scandal is to come out and hurt this anti-christ it will be after he is in the office for the first or second year of his term. But, you can blame Hillary for this reign- for without her people this guy would not be in power.

Dr. Long – I hope to be able to tune in tonight. This is a cause near and dear to my heart.

Head’s up if y’all hadn’t heard – Virginia Governor, Tim Kaine, has agreed to serve as Chairman of the DNC. The story hit the Va news circuit late yesterday afternoon. Not sure what I think about it. Certainly his decision to accept the Chairmanship flies in the face of what he told Virginian’s just weeks ago, that was, he would not accept any role in an O WH until his term ended next year. Said he didn’t want to be distracted and that Virginian’s deserved a full-time Governor. Geesh! In just two weeks he’s changed his mind. He’ll serve both roles part time. Who does this doublespeak sound like…hhhmmmm oh yeah, his new boss. They’ll do great together!

Also just read Leon Panetta will head CIA. Hopefully Larry will provide us with some perspective on this choice. I’d be very interested in learning his thoughts. Panetta always struck me as being more “putty” than “grit”. Then again, haven’t followed his career to closely.

    Updated 3:28 p.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut and Joby Warrick
Leon Panetta has been chosen as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Democratic aides said Monday. Panetta, a former member of Congress who served as chief of staff to President Bill Clinton, has most recently been the director of the Panetta Institute, a non-partisan policy center at California State University in Monterey. A biography of Panetta, from his institute’s Web site, is here.

Obama has also chosen Dennis Blair as his director of national intelligence, two Democratic officials said. Blair, a retired admiral, had long been rumored for the post, but the announcement had been delayed, reportedly because of the extended time it took for Obama to choose Panetta to head CIA.

Panetta, a nine-term California congressman and accomplished deal-maker, will replace Michael V. Hayden as director of the 51-year-old agency and its global network of about 20,000 employees, the sources said. The choice of a longtime Washington veteran with little previous intelligence experience came as a surprise even to some Obama insiders.

In choosing Panetta, Obama, appears to have opted for a fresh start at an agency plagued by numerous scandals during the Bush tenure. Obama bypassed several candidates with CIA backgrounds for a politically savvy manager with personal ties to Obama and to Congress.

Officials familiar with the choice noted that Panetta, as Clinton’s chief of staff, participated in the daily intelligence briefings in the Oval Office and had intimate knowledge of the interaction between the agency and the White House. Panetta also was a member of the Iraq Study Group.

“He has sufficient gravitas to ensure that CIA equities are going to be protected, and the agency continues to have a strong voice,” said a former senior CIA official told of Obama’s choice.

Although Panetta was a surprise pick — his name was absent from most of the lists of contenders circulating in Washington in recent weeks — the selection was historically consistent with previous CIA directors, only a few of whom were agency veterans, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“There may be some people at Langley who will look at this and say, ‘What?’ ” he said. “But when they stop and think about it, I think they’ll be enthusiastic.”

Leon Panetta to head the CIA?

But he’s not an outright batshit incompetent, right, how can that be?

    I thought, oh, never mind…

    Larry:

I think we should all hope (not hopey) that Barack is successful. Tomorrow Barack will become the President of the country WE live in and hoping for his success is in the best interest of all Americans. But Larry, don’t put too much weight into the fact that Barack is loved by his daughters. It is true that children don’t make good actors where the sincerity of their feelings are concerned, but I have known children who adored parents who were criminals, so being loved by your children doesn’t necessarily merit the Good Housekeeping seal of Approval. Now if Barack offers workable solutions to this countries woes, then I will believe he has something viable to offer instead of the rhetorical flourish that is in actuality his most measurable accomplishment. As a citizen it is his job to prove to me and all citizens that he’s willing to work for the people, not the powerful elite, not the mainstream media, not the politicians who have strangled us nearly to death. When he does those things I will believe he is “the one”, until then you’ll have to continue to label me and nearly half of the population, skeptical.

    Hi Paulie,

Thanks so much for carrying on this great show. I really enjoyed the one you hosted last week, as much as Lynette’s. I hope Lynette will come on as a guest when she can.

  • I’m a Linda too

Welcome Paulie. I do hope Lynette is OK. Good wishes ensuing.

    BE WELL.

The “Getting a Handle on Hate” thread is jammed with traffic. It is interesting that there are so many passionate and polarized opinions about Obama already. Doesn’t really bode well for the country, imo, but I guess we shall see on that count.

For my part, Larry, I am confused by that post. You are going to go by the “show me” argument, and yet, after all the things Obama has already shown us (as many other commenters listed), you now think he “seems” decent? He did these things. We did not imagine them.

I will not “soak in bitterness or hatred”, but I also will not give Obama any respect because he has not earned it yet. He’s pretty far in the red with that, actually. There are no words and actions without consequence.
