Adding More Fuel To The Fire (And I Don’t Mean In Texas)

No, I mean the deal this Administration cut with the now bankrupt solar power company, Solyndra. I wrote about this company, the recipient of a $535 million dollar loan, the other day (When It Comes To This Administration…). Seems there were some pretty interesting connections between Obama and a number of investors, as well as officials, of Solyndra. I can put it in one word: money. They gave Obama a boatload of it.

As noted in that post, one of the major investors into Solyndra, and a board member, is George Kaiser. Kaiser, as you may recall, was a mighty generous fellow to Obama back in 2008. Seems he gave the fledgling senator from IL a token of his esteem which totaled $53,500. Yes, that number is correct – $53,500. Those two zeros are supposed to be there.

But Kaiser was not the only one from Solyndra lining Obama’s coffers. According to this Daily Caller article, there were a few more:

[snip] Ben Bierman, executive vice president of operations donated $5,500 to Obama, and Karen Alter, senior vice president of marketing gave $23,000, just to name a few. [snip]

That is not where it ends, however. It seems that once Obama got into the White House, so did George Kaiser. And this is where the plot thickens:

[snip] According to White House visitor logs, between March 12, 2009, and April 14, 2011, Solyndra officials and investors made no fewer than 20 trips to the West Wing. In the week before the administration awarded Solyndra with the first-ever alternative energy loan guarantee on March 20, four separate visits were logged.

George Kaiser, who has in the past been labeled a major Solyndra investor as well as a Obama donor, made three visits to the White House on March 12, 2009, and one on March 13. Kaiser has denied any direct involvement in the Solyndra deal and through a statement from his foundation said he “did not participate in any discussions with the U.S. government regarding the loan.”

But the countless meetings at the White House seem hardly coincidental. Kaiser, in fact, is responsible for 16 of the 20 meetings that showed up on the White House logs. [snip]

I believe I am seeing the origin of the fire here. It would seem it was coming from a big fat liar. Ahem. Let’s just take a little looksee with whom Kaiser (Liar) met:

In the meetings on March 12, Kaiser met with former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors Austan Goolsbee at 11 a.m., Senior Advisor Pete Rouse at 3 p.m., and Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council Heather Higginbottom at 6:30 p.m. On the 13th, Kaiser met with Deputy Director of the National Economic Council Jason Furman at 9 a.m.

Other Solyndra officials that made the trek over to the White House include Chairman and Founder Christian Gronet on September 22, 2009, at 9:30 a.m.; and Board Members Thomas Baruch and David Prend.

Baruch went to the White House May 7, 2010, and September 20, 2010, at 8:40 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Prend visited on September 21, 2010, at 9:15 p.m.

Huh. I don’t know about you, but Kaiser’s denials are ringing a bit hollow for me at this point. This clinches it for me, though:

The visitor logs also show that a number of members of the administration a loan guarantee for Solyndra pressing enough to take meetings. Former Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel and Adviser Valerie Jarrett even took meetings with Kaiser. (Click here to read the rest.)

Yep, that makes it official – George Kaiser is lying his hind end off on this one. But hey, it got him over half a billion buckaroos, so I guess we know what the cost of his integrity was.

Now you know, I am not one skinny bit surprised that Obama promoted this company, gave them a huge amount of our money, and blew smoke up our collective rears on this. That is just another day in the White House for him. But if Kaiser has that kind of cash to throw around to the likes of Obama, you’d think he’d be smart enough to know this simple fact:

THEY KEEP LOGS OF VISITORS TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

Just sayin’.

Instead of putting that money where it might actually have done some good, maybe a modern day WPA fixing roads and bridges, for example, which would have kept some folks actually working, Obama blows it on this clown. Heckuva job, Obie.

**UPDATE: Well, well, well – the FBI is paying Solyndra Headquarters a little visit. With warrants. Oopsy daisy.

And now the FBI is going to the homes of Solyndra’s CEO and Founder. That can’t be good.

Oh, but wait – there is even more! Now it is coming out that the Department of Energy sat in on meetings at Solyndra for MONTHS even as the company was going downhill.

I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to see what the FBI turns up on this.

As for the DOE, they got some ‘splaining to do…

Thank God Obama changed the way Washington works.

We have Chicago style now… which is OK for pizza… not so much for government… well not so good for representative government anyway… I guess it works for Obama.

Yeah, to bad it wasn’t a change for the better. Maybe all those adoring obots should have asked for a more specific definition of “change”. Instead they “hoped” it would be for the better. Oops.

Kenosha, I don’t think obots have the mental capacity to ponder things like that.  They don’t think for themselves…they wait for instructions from the mother ship.

Yes – he was getting lots of suspect contributions. Unlike Clinton and McCain’s respective websites, who made sure they could follow the money and make sure it was legit. What a surprise – not.

The level of cronyism by this administration has been unprecedented and using money we have had to borrow.

A thorough investigation on the abuse of power for the benefit of specific loyal corporate executives would bring about an impeachment of Obama. I really don’t think he understands what has been done under his watch. I don’t think he is that intelligent.

Now you get to the Internal report from the State of California for Recommendations to monitor the grants

Recommendations As soon as possible, the Energy Commission should take the steps necessary to implement a system of internal controls adequate to provide assurance that Recovery Act funds will be used to meet the purposes of the Recovery Act. These controls should include those necessary to collect and verify the data needed to measure and report on the results of the programs funded by the Recovery Act and to mitigate the potential for fraud, waste, and abuse. Such steps should include quickly performing the actions already planned, such as assessing the Energy Commission’s controls and the capacity of its existing resources and systems, and promptly implementing all needed improvements. The Energy Commission should promptly solicit proposals from entities that could provide the services allowable under the Recovery Act and should execute contracts, grants, or loan agreements with these entities. http://www.bsa.ca.gov/pdfs/reports/2009-119.1.pdf

Yes, KenoshaMarge, in normal times this would  be the case, but since the dawning of Thee One with the complicity of the MSM, these have not been normal times: Obama don’t never got to splain nothin’ to nobody no-how.

        • Ferd_Berfle

Indeed. It is quite all right for this administration for flagrantly violate acquisition laws with impunity because the Anointed One is never wrong and works in mysterious ways.

That has been the case thus far oh wise pink bunny. All things are subject to change. And if things get bad enough, if enough “truth” actually gets to the public, splainin will be the least of their worries. Stand to one side so the rats don’t trample ya.

  • Elliott

It is even worse than described. It was fraud set up by the White House for a group of large donors. Kaiser et al took over a failing company by putting in money to get majority ownership of stock. They then finagled and enormous loan from the DOE with enormous pressure from the WH. It continued to go belly up even with the almost zero interest government insured loan. In February 2011 Kaiser kicked in another 72 mil supposed to keep it operating with a cutoff date of August 2011 but with an enormous poison pill: Kaiser becomes the senior creditor not the bank. This simply is not done. And a government agency simply does not approve this except in the world of Obama. Now Kaiser is attempting to take over the entire company and assets and of course not repay the government loan which is clear by the bankruptcy filings of Kaiser. He is a fraud.

    • Anonymous

Thank you for more of the story on this, Elliott. That really sets the stage for the fraud this was, doesn’t it?

    • Elliott

I also spotted the following Asia Times business blog discussion which includes this quote “Including this bit that show complicity in the actions of Energy Dept officials in a fraud.

Solyndra officials had recently pronounced the company financially healthy. BUT AT THE END OF 2010 they had privately confided to Energy Department officials that the
company was rapidly going broke and on the verge of shutting down,
according to newly released records and interviews. Solyndra’s
inability to repay its debt leaves taxpayers liable for repaying the
      loans.

      IN FEBURARY,
the Energy Department agreed to a refinancing for Solyndra that allowed
investors who put in new money to get their funds repaid first — before
taxpayers — if the company defaulted on the federal loan.

Given the timing the least that can be said is that government officials
participated in a fraud against the US Government. The questions are
from how high up the chain of command did this come? And will Obama
Admin officials be willing to fall on thier swords for Obama?” This is dated Friday September 9, 2010.

The cat is out of the bag and people have already figured out what went on and why. Will the media cover it up for Obama and will the Republican Congress let it all go away?

Isn’t it time for the people to demand of their legislators that they install rules against any administration doing business (promoting, appointing, gifting, etc.) with any, and I mean any donor to that administration?  That would mean if any of them contributed in any way, shape or form to a campaign’s coffers, anyone’s pet projects, that they would be prohibited from getting any ‘stimulus’ monies or grants for the list of the president’s term.
In addition, a rule of law requiring the full, independent auditing of the outgoing administration’s financials up to and including the President, which should then be made public, would show whether any of these ‘politicians’ got rich off of the people’s backs.

    • Anonymous

Sorry.  My anger got the best of my fingers.  That would be “for the life of the president’s term”.

  • Ferd_Berfle

This isn’t the first time I’ve said it, RRRA, and it won’t be the last: This administration is a criminal enterprise and should be investigated under RICO.

I didn’t like what companies such as Haliburton did under the Bush administration and thought they should have been fully investigated and, if warranted, barred from further government work. It appears that the progressives are even worse than the neocons about fleecing the American taxpayer. Go figure.

I worked for a very large privately-owned company for over 20 years that has been involved in government work since the 1930s so I do know a little bit about this. Companies like Solyndra give all government contractors a bad reputation by association and it angers me no end as the good get lumped in with the bad causing citizens to think that they’re all crooked and on the take. They aren’t and I do hope that this doesn’t turn into a general witch hunt where good companies that do things strictly in accordance with the law are considered guilty unless found innocent.

I further hope the House (Issa’s committee) locates, investigates, and refers for prosecution those companies that have violated the federal acquisition regulations (FAR) and Department of Energy Acquisition Regulations (DEAR)–including any government bureaucrats involved in these potential violations of law.

Under That One, the more things promised to be changed, the more things stayed the same it appears. New boss/old boss.

If Issa gets his teeth into this he won’t let go. That is one reason, other than reflex attacks on Republicans, that made the New York Times do a hit piece on him when he started investigating Gunwalker.

Typical NYT’s action. Don’t do any investigating on the subject of their own, just attack and smear whoever is doing the investigating of their adored administration. Even then Lichtblau made so many errors, or downright lies, that the NYTs has had to issue several retractions. Lordy how absolutely “bush league” the NYTs has become.

Mark my words, money has been thrown around far too loosely, and with so little regard for the integrity we used to assume was just naturally practiced, that a special court and an army of investigators just to deal with the corruption of this administration will have to be established, once he’s out.

Sadly, no such investigation into the Bush Administration’s corruption were held, and that just emboldened the present administration to do what they wanted.

Had there been a precedent for holding the dishonest within ANY political party accountable, at least a framework for dealing with it in the future would have been in place, and it all may have served as a deterrent.

Now, there will be no objectivity.  Partisanship and the blame game will continue to rule the day and the crimes will amplify in magnitude.

This whole thing just reeks, but then isn’t it pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Barry and company.  At least Obama can’t blame this one on G.W. or the Republicans, even though I’m sure some troll will come here saying as much.  The Feds will undoubtedly come up with lots of interesting information, but will we ever know what they find? The Gov never does things like this, but that $535 million dollar loan, allegedly for job creation, they should have just given each employee a quarter million and told them to go start a small business of their own. Some would fail, but some would succeed and start hiring more people.

It’s just the nature of government to waste money. I swear they could fly over and throw money out of an airplane and it would be a more efficient way of spending it. Here we are with Solyndra, 535 million dollars of taxpayer money spent, and a few months later we didn’t “save or create” one single job.

R3A:  Thanks, again, for another fine thread.  It appears this critical mess is reaching critical mass.  Anyone who can piece together the right info to repair a computer problem (ta da!) or read Ikea’s instructions for putting together an entertainment center can figure out the so-called “too complex” details of this crooked govt’s plans to gain in what apparently amounts to a money laundering scheme.  No internal controls (aka auditing) of massive amounts of Chinese dollars backed by American taxpayers (those evil corporate, jet-setting workers), finding their way back into the pockets of the Democrat party and joining the piles of money from the unions.  The price of Democracy just keeps going up, you know?

My hope is that the FBI hasn’t been deployed as a way of screwing up the investigation and making the prosecution of this crime shaky or to shield it from public scrutiny.  In the opening salvos from Issa on Fast and Furious the DOJ people kept trying to wave him off by saying they couldn’t answer any questions because “there is an ongoing investigation.”  Any misstep on execution of fact and evidence gathering and Solyndra officers and investors as well as the DOE and other govt people involved in this could walk.  I recall the fiasco between the DOJ and FBI in the investigation of Archer Daniels Midland?

Some of the facts, m’am:  The FBI has 57 field offices.  57?  In 2010 its annual budge was 7.9 B and as of 5/11 it had 35,437 employees.

Many thanks to you and others here for summarizing the salient points.
