Old age, I decided,

is a gift.

I am now,

probably for the first time in my life,

the person I have always wanted to be.

Oh, not my body!

I sometimes despair over my body …

the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt.

And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives

in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life,

my loving family for less grey hair or a flatter belly.

As I’ve aged,

I’ve become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself.

I’ve become my own friend.

I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed,

or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need,

but looks so avant-garde on my patio.

I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends

leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom

that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m.,

and sleep until noon?

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60′s, and if I, at the same time,

wish to weep over a lost love… I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body,

and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to,

despite the pitying glances from the bikini set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful.

But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten .

and I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken.

How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one,

or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car?

But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion.

A heart never broken is, pristine and sterile and will never know the joy

of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn grey,

and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face.

So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

I can say “no”, and mean it.

I can say “yes”, and mean it.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think.

I don’t question myself anymore.

So, to answer your question,

I like being old. It has set me free.

I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever,

but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been,

or worrying about what will be. but will continue to rejoice in

what was.

My Dad passed at 65, really a young age, in retrospect.

But until that day, he was always mentally active, learning the new computer technologies, keeping up with the tax laws, reading.

I took from him that learning is a life long process, you must always seek knowledge, and create, if only for yourself, life is never static, the human mind must progress.

I guess the people I admire have aged gracefully, on their own terms, I’m hoping I can do the same, I’m hoping I am doing the same, not dependent upon others for my sense of self. I gave blood last week, the others at the Red Cross faculty were either middle aged to older ladies, or men. They’re the ones who keep the country running, you know, they’re the ones pointing when our politicians are criminal, they’re giving blood on a Saturday, donating time and money to a food bank, all without notice, or pay, because its’ the right thing to do.

Public service as a contribution to the common good is my responsibility as an American.

Having said that, I really hope Obama doesn’t choose Danzig as sec of def, he’s not qualified to run the war, it’s my impression he’s not even smart enough to understand the war…

I worry a lot. I’ve been so worried that we have not adequately served you readers sufficiently. My attempts at humor have been, at times, probably very lame, but I was desperately trying to make you giggle or even laugh.

We want to do anything we can to be helpful to you. Do let us know.

That said, Larry Johnson feels very strongly that we cannot be all things to all people, and that we must stay true to ourselves. If we lose readers, so be it, Larry says.

We make NO money from this blog. In fact, we make far less than it takes to run this blog. Our monthly server costs are HUGE, and the charges of our software expert run hundreds of dollars per month. It takes @ $2,000++++ to run this blog every month.

Yet, we get no advertising — well, very little. The Amazon purchases you make do help us a lot — please click on any of the Amazon links if you’re going to buy something at Amazon anyway, and it helps us so much. The % is extremely small — like 1 or 2%. We get maybe a couple hundred dollars a month, if we’re lucky.

I write about politics to escape my personal, poverty-stricken reality, and the incessant pain that wakes me up all night, and only lets me sit for 10-15 minutes here at a time, and unable to stand for more than 30 seconds, or drive further than 1 to sometimes a whopping 10 miles — and it’s very scary to drive too far from home because I never know when the excruciating back spasms will start, for which the only cure is to lie in bed on a heating pad or cold packs.

Must the Obamabots strip me of the only escape I have?

I can’t begin to fathom why they are doing that. They won. Why are they such “sore whiners”? It’s beyond me.

It also cost the little agency that helps me a LOT of PRECIOUS TIME that they should have had to help OTHER DISABLED PEOPLE!

It cost me a lot of money and time too. I can’t get into all the details, but I had to hire help to aid me in doing all the paperwork and then send off the documents with a tracking # so I could be satisfied that they received the documents.

And now I sit here wondering what next they’ll find to torment me.

It is why I had to “disappear.”

Also, in “outing” me, they weren’t content to attack me. No, they had to go after a relative’s business — which MUST NOT BE NAMED HERE — DO NOT MENTION THOSE NAMES.

Those relatives had NOTHING to do with this blog. They NEVER PAID US A PENNY when we once advertised their business. We just put up their ad to be nice to them, because Larry is also fond of them.

Here we are in this CRISIS time for all American businesses, and the Obamabots had to go after a true-blue American business — the only one of its kind left that manufactures everything in the U.S. The ONLY one left of its kind that hires ALL U.S. employees. The ONLY one left of its kind that makes sure all of its U.S. employees ALL have HEALTH INSURANCE and a VERY LOVELY working environment. Owned by people who voted for Ralph Nader this year, as an act of conscience since it was a DONE DEAL that Barack Obama would win this state, but who otherwise voted for ALL the Democrats AS DID I. (WELL, I did vote for the GOP Secretary of State because the Progressive Democrats group recommended him — ENDORSED HIM (!) — because he is the most honest, fair-minded, and decent Secretary of State we’ve ever had, and he looks out for all Democrats as much, if not moreso, than all Republicans.)

My wife is also disabled and has entrenched pain for which there is no cure.
This campaign has been heated and the Obamabots have shown how low they can go. Neither you or Larry ever gave a preference during the campaign and have always shown your loyalty for democrats even going so far as supporting Gregoire.
The obama people need to back off or risk a backlash from the community here at NQ and elsewhere.

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,

I hope that someday, the majority will wake up to the fact that BHO is not a juggernaut with a mandate. And it was obvious that the Democrats in charge of the DNC had pre-selected their candidate as far back as 2004, and they were equally determined to prevent the Clintons from recapturing the White House and leadership of the DNC. So number one, BO didn’t “beat the Clinton machine,” the rigged DNC did it – BO was just the tool they used.

And in the General Election, BO didn’t win a mandate based on his strengths and positions. He one because a small majority of Americans wanted to punish the Republicans, including many conservative Republican voters.

So he may be in the driver’s seat, but he’s not there because of he’s so popular. He’s there because he was given the job by the DNC and rubber-stamped by the electorate as the “not-Bush” candidate. Once the DNC rigged the primaries, there was very little choice left to voters. It was either re-elect the Party that has nearly destroyed our economy, military, and foreign relations… or vote for “the other guy.”

He’s just “the other guy,” not our Fearless Leader.

It is just reprehensible that anyone would act this way toward another human being in the first place, but to someone as kind, gentle, thoughtful, funny, and supportive as you are is just heart breaking. I simply cannot believe the depths to which people have sunk – and from which they presumably derive some glee. Heaven knows you didn’t deserve this. The extra effort and expense you have had to incur as a result is disturbing.

What kind of people are we becoming that someone(s) could do something like that to someone else who has done them no harm, nothing more than disagree on a political candidate? When so many people, so many good people, can justify lying, cheating, and stealing?

I am so so sorry they took these reprehensible actions for which they will surely get a karmic reply from the universe.

I have been on the disability road with family and know how the bureacracy can be and what a shame that it had to suck time out of the system to address the whim of folks who surely had more meaningful things to do for their new victory, but you and your family need those benefits and that is what the staff is for to make sure you arent wrongfully terminated.

Some people just never learn and cannot be graceful in victory, sadly others must pay the price. but as we know for every action there is an equal or greater reaction.

No doubt some of the kids responsible are like the one in ‘V’ who turned in the nice older lady who babysat him to the lizards..

I’m so sorry your father died so young. My father was 64 when he passed away and I thought that was young, even 20 yrs. ago. . My husband and I are now 62, and so yes, 65 seems too soon to leave this earth. Our daughter just had our first grandbaby, so we hope we’re around to see that precious thing grow up. My mother is 85, and she’s still so lucid, and such a happy person with a great sense of humor.
You’re never ready to lose them, at any age.

Your post hit home with me. I am 47 years old and have had rheumatoid arthritis for the last 10 – 12 years. I also have a herniated disc in the lower back and carpal tunnel in both hands. In 2000, I started losing my vision in my right eye and while I am grateful for the vision I still have, I fear losing any more. While I have not be diagnosed or labeled as disabled, I think I am. There is no way I could hold a full time job unless the employer was very sympathetic to my needs. Luckily my husband started his own business 2o years ago so I am able to work at home for our business.

This blog has been such a welcome relief to me. It gives me a chance to forget about the pain for a while. It allows me to connect to the outside world. With conditions that come with a lot of pain, depression is usually lurking in the background waiting to take over. Having something to escape to helps keep the depression from taking over.

I am so impressed with all that you are able to do here at NoQuarter and so very grateful. Thank you for sharing your “back story” although I am so sorry though for the grief it has brought you personally.

I’m so sorry for all that you have been through. It really doesn’t surprise me what the bots did to you though, considering what they did to Joe the Plumber – for just asking a question.

It really sickens me. I hope that some day, these people will grow up and grow a conscience and will be horrified at what they did, and if they don’t, I at least hope for karma to return the favor to them. (And then I feel bad for wishing the same thing on them cause I’m a decent person)!

Referring to the recent ‘stimulus package’ President Obama said that the good news is that banks that received ’stimulus’ money were going to be able to lend it out at nine times the amount that they put on deposit. I have news for all, this is not the good news, it is the bad news. What they are doing is exactly what got us into this mess in the first place. This is fractional lending. The banks are literally creating money from nothing (air). Don’t you wish you could do that? Say put $10,000 into an account and lend out $90,000 at interest? You can’t, and the banks should not be allowed to do it either.
All of you that think that it makes sense to go 10 trillion dollars further into debt are not thinking straight. Giving these failing companies and banks trillions of dollars is like putting an additional 5000 passengers on-board the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. It just doesn’t make sense. Let the companies and banks that obviously can’t make good decisions fail. If there is a market for what they previously did that market will arise like a phoenix from the ashes. Free enterprise works, free enterprise does not include government intervention in failing businesses.
Wake up America you are being bilked of your financial future, your children’s and grandchildren’s financial future. These people don’t care about the economy. What they do care about is taking all of the money from you that they can get their hands on as soon as they possibly can. Yes of course you are right and many of us do know what the Fraud and his criminal pals are doing to us. I think that’s what the Tea Parties are about. That was a start of what I predict will either result in some of these people stepping down, being impeached, or the worst scenario some sort of revolution to take this country back from that scum. Am I glad that I found you!  I have needed to vent for a long time and don’t want to burden my family or friends.  I know that I have been blessed but it’s so hard putting on a happy face all the time and not being able to voice my frustrations.
I had six months of chemo and I have been in remission for 18 months.  I know that is a blessing.  But I have not worked in two years and now I have a job that doesn’t pay very much and by the time I pay the bills, there is nothing left for me.  No new shoes or clothes, which I need and definitely no extras.
I live with my son and his wife, which is another blessing.  But I know that I will never have a place of my own and I spend all of my time in my bedroom so that I do not bother them because they are newly weds.
And to make matters worse, last night the car broke down and I will probably have to borrow money from my parents to pay the repair bill.  I owe them money already and hate asking them for more money but my back is against the wall.  I am so tired of barely surviving and feeling like a burden to those that I love.  It’s getting harder and harder to put on a happy face!  There are times when I wonder why I survived chemo to live like this.  I could go on and on but I hate the “Poor Me” attitude as it is and feel that what I have written so far is enough.  Thanks for the opportunity.  It’s nice to get it out, somewhat, and as soon as the tears dry, I’ll pick myself up and go on with my life.  I just feel so weak and tired right now.
