Burn Desecrated Korans?

* BUMPED UP *

The Obama Administration–from CENTCOM to the White House–has botched the entire response to the report that Korans taken from prisoners suspected of terrorism were burned. I don’t care whether this was intentional or a mistake. The Administration should have kept its damn collective-mouth shut. There was no compelling reason to admit to this. Should they have lied? HELL YES!! I do not believe we should deliberately antagonize or attack another religion, including Islam. But in this case the Korans that were torched had been confiscated from inmates who had written on the pages of a book Muslims consider holy. Muslims had already desecrated their so-called “holy” book.

The initial reports about this incident should have been ignored and denied. This is not a goddamn court case. No one is under oath. The U.S. military and the Obama Administration should have lied. They should have insisted that the Koran aka Quran was not burned. But no. We decided to admit to this error and launch an apology tour. WHAT HORSESHIT!!

The Taliban urged Afghans Thursday to target foreign military bases and kill Westerners in retaliation for burnings of copies of the Quran at NATO’s main base in the country as a third day of violent protests began.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered across the country, some chanting “Death to America!”, Reuters witnesses and officials said. In eastern Kabul, hundreds of youths threw rocks at police, who fired shots into the air to try disperse the crowds.

“Our brave people must target the military bases of invader forces, their military convoys and their invader bases,” read an emailed Taliban statement released by the insurgency’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. “They have to kill them (Westerners), beat them and capture them to give them a lesson to never dare desecrate the holy Quran again.”

We do not owe anyone an apology. Not for this. There is a time to lie. There is a time to deny. Admitting to this earns us nothing. In fact, it costs us dearly. Besides the two U.S. soldiers murdered by a crazed Afghan asshole, U.S. citizens and facilities are at greater risk throughout the Middle East.

What should we have done? Apart from denying the burning of the books, we should have announced that, after inspecting the books, the inmate Korans’ were being returned.

This one is on Obama. Instead of keeping his mouth shut he was back out in public flapping his gums and bowing and scraping like some beaten house servant. “We so sorry Massa Muslim.”

Barack Obama owes an apology to the people of America for being such a spineless wimp.

I’m not a big fan of Newt Gingrich, but he nailed it on this:

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said President Obama “surrendered” Thursday when he apologized to the Afghan government for the burning of several Qurans at an American military base near Kabul.

Referring to the burning of “radical Islamic material” that included the Qurans, the former House speaker said the situation had been “blown into a huge incident by various fanatics in Afghanistan.” He told a crowd gathered at a campaign rally at the Bing Crosby Theater that while the president had apologized for the burning, he had not called on the Afghan government to issue an apology for the deaths of two NATO soldiers who were killed by a man wearing an Afghan army uniform during increasingly violent protests of the desecration of the Muslim holy book.

“There seems to be nothing that radical Islamists can do to get Barack Obama’s attention in a negative way,” Gingrich said, “and he is consistently apologizing to people who do not deserve the apology of the president of the United States, period.”

And a word of advice to General John Allen–SHUT THE FUCK UP. Stop apologizing in public for something that does not merit an apology.

The reports that I have read stated that Afghan laborers found the burning Korans. If that is true (and I have no idea whether it is or isn’t) then denial wouldn’t have done anything to pacify the situation. Perhaps it may have inflamed it even more, if that is possible. However, these nuts will find any reason under the sun to hate us, regardless. When you add things like pissing on the Taliban none of it is helping.

Our Commander the Thief really screwed up this time. And his stupidity has put soldiers and citizens in harms way. Not that I am in any way supporting what he did afterward, but offering an apology seems to be the only thing he could have done (again, referring to my first sentence). And you are right, he does owe the American people an apology. But not for being a spineless wimp because if that is the measure we should hear apologies every single day. Even his teleprompter would go on strike. I do think that he should apologize for being a complete failure as Commander in Thief and offer his resignation. Of course then we would have to deal with plugs and that may or may not be a worse scenario.

If you can enlighten us as to the nature of how this was found out then I may be more inclined to agree with your assessment that Newt is right. I’m going by what I have read and it hasn’t been easy to find the facts. I don’t consider apologizing surrender. I do consider the whole misguided effort in Afghanistan and negotiating with the Taliban to be beyond stupidity.

    This is Obama Ghraib.

Afghan laborers?  Most of whom are probabaly illiterate.  Did they have I Phones to take photos?  No.  There is ZERO upside to admitting this as a mistake.  ZERO.

Many people in that culture believe that the first group which seeks peace negotiations are admitting that they have lost. I am afraid that they will view an apology for the burning of the Koran in the same manner. It is all to easy for us to believe that because we think of things in a certain way that others from different cultures think the same way.

I remember the interview of a young Pakistani woman, who had an American accent not a British accent and was clothed in western garb. The interview was conducted shortly after the death of Osama bin Laden. She was asked what she thought of the killing of  Osama and she replied, “that she thought it was sad”. The reporter responded, “but he killed so many people”. And she then replied, “that’s what you guys think”.

I don’t think Obama’s back round as a Community Organizer, where being PC might be helpful, serves him well in foreign policy issues. We as Americans even Muslims Americans may respond to an apology differently than the average Afghan would respond. An apology may make the situation worse not better as the President I am sure intended.

Thank you for a very informative explanation. I had never taken their cultural beliefs into consideration. Then again, many will fight for whatever side pays them the most so I’ve never really thought they had any core cultural beliefs to begin with.

There is no need to lie about anything. If the book was deemed damaged  there is a way proper way of destroying a damage Qur’an (Radd al-Muhtar, 5/271 http://www.daruliftaa.com/question?txt_questionid=q-08570775 ).

“In light of the above, there are two methods of disposing of an unusable copy of the Qur’an:

    1) Wrapping it in a pure piece of cloth and burying it respectfully in a
place where people (normally) do not walk about. In cold climate
countries (such as the UK), one may dig a Shiq grave, but a slab should be placed first and over it the soil.

    2) Fastening the Qur’an with a heavy object like a stone and then placing it respectfully in flowing water.

If one is able to implement the above two methods, it would not be
permitted to burn the copy of the Qur’an. However, if the above two
methods are difficult to carry out, then one may burn the Qur’an and
bury or drown the resulting ash.”

All we have to do is follow the belief…. The books should have been turned over to US Military Muslim Chaplains…Simply put, we screwed up….

    • http://noquarterusa.net Larry Johnson

Bullshit, J.  We don’t owe the Koran nothing.  Putting our soldiers to work disposing of a book already desecrated by the Muslims is not an appropriate use of military resources.

      • Anonymous

Larry… forget owning anything to the Qur’an . That is not the point. The point is that we have two of our folk dead because we didn’t classify the operation or even better simply put, follow the religious procedure. I think if following the religious procedure does not end with any our folk being killed by crazed zealots over  stupidity. Then its worth the trouble. We owe our own folk better than this. Forget owning anyone or anything else.

Using military folk of this stuff? Well I agree with that one.

        • http://noquarterusa.net Larry Johnson

True.  But the point is that someone made a mistake.  There is no need to go public and confirm the mistake.

          • Anonymous

    Dear Mr. Johnson,

We should apologize for this. In fact we should apologize for breathing air. Our continued existence? We are so sorry.

Those that worked in clandestine operations like the CIA? Sorry.

Those that gave their lives in wars or served to hold that line that prevented wars, that provided  personal protection, or ran into burning buildings? Sorry.

I’ll be back as soon as I calm down.  I must calm down from my apology. Medic!

I can understand why you feel that way and I almost do. Until some Muslim representative that isn’t a complete nutjob makes the case for tolerance and “peace” these impressions will become more and more acceptable.

I don’t understand the Muslim religion and have no real inclination to do so. I do however respect people’s rights unto their own beliefs so long as they don’t interfere with or impose on others. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Muslim activity is doing little to win my tolerance and respect.

I’ve known a Muslim man that works at a local Speedway for years. We have always had a friendly relationship. I know that he cares deeply about his family and worries when people try to lump him in with the radicals. So I don’t buy that all Muslims are out to kill unbelievers. Perhaps many, if not most, do.

I certainly can’t look at this man I know and distrust him because of his religion. My heart and mind won’t allow it. Maybe he is an exception to the rule, as in the GOOD Samaritan. Don’t really know. And that’s just being honest.

I used to feel that way myself until one day I realized that it was probably Muslims turning in all those terrorists we have been catching or killing lately. I think it must be hard for a Muslim to denounce publicly another Muslim.

How stupid can we really be? Burned a truck load of Islamic material including the Qur’ans? A truck load and out in open? Then lets make it worse! “Afghan workers said they rescued the books from the incinerator and then smuggled them off the base to show to local leaders.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204778604577243113850631098.html

Forget investigating the incident… Smuggled off the base? Just the books? Or was there other materials? We need to take a hard look at our policy.

I don’t subscribe to the WSJ but appreciate that you linked to the story. I read that workers found them but didn’t know the rest of the story. I agree with Larry that this shouldn’t be the job of the military so I place the fault squarely on Obama. I also agree with you that they should have been disposed of properly, respecting the religion whether we agree with it or not.

I know pols are talented at talking out of both sides of their mouths and can turn hypocrisy into an art form but damn some boundaries please!

He is a politician, lying is not only an option for him, it’s in his DNA.

I had to laugh at Kirsten Powers on Special Report insisting that Obama was right because we are “better” than “they” are and apologizing is what we do when we are wrong. She said it with a straight face too.

I know this is going to sound like age discrimination, but I am more than a little tired of these young know it alls with little history in what life is all about, pontificating about what is right and wrong, criticizing our opinions when they differ from theirs and frankly, aren’t there any intelligent women out there who aren’t little more than eye candy?  It seems to be a prerequisite for commentators.
As to the Afghans and the Iranians, how long are we going to put up with their hatred of Americans, their acting out against us and our troops without just removing these boils on the backside of humanity?  Are they really worth our time, money and lives?  Does anyone really think they will ever change?
They want to wipe Israel from the face of the earth.  I’d suggest a similar resolution to our problems in Iran and Afghanistan.
Aren’t we all just plain tired of this charade of Obama’s?  They are not our friend and they will never be our friends.  Maybe Obama should send them a birthday cake as Reagan did?
        Naive, to say the least.

Barry Soetoro did not give the order to execute the mission to whack that POS until three cabinet level people threatened to expose the WIMP in chief.

No amount of excuses, bowing or apologies from BO can change the absolute fact, the current POTUS is a failure and a WIMP. His own wife called him one on national TV.

Burning any Koran is fine with me. The Saudi’s and other Muslim nations have not one speck of reservation about burning the bible or executing people who read it. The “muslims” who had their book of lies burned after writing in it should have had the koran replaced by the resident imam or their writing utensils removed.
The bigger issue is anyone who apologizes for it and has written he will side with muslims if push comes to shove just gave us a reminder why he isunfit to serve as POTUS.
For the record, burn any religious book you want,be the Quron, Christian bible, Hindu, Buddist or the book of the dead…”spirit is something that no one destroys”.

I think this event highlights how much Americans and foreigners are hated in Afghanistan. It is not really about Korans, but reflects the larger issue of the country being occupied for 11 years and all the death and destruction brought by America. Time to get out and let me fight it out among themselves. If it was not “burning” Korans it would be something else. Who really cares what Obama or anyone else has said? It was a no win situation. Time to leave.

By the way Gingrich is the one pushing for “victory”, whatever that means, in Afghanistan rather than withdrawl. That moron wants to keep America perpetually engaged in Afghanistan. He said he would not even negotiate with the Taliban. He also wants to expand things to Iran and get more involved in Pakistan. We need no lectures from the necon Gingrich.

We are hated by the Muslims whether we “occupy” their country or not. They will always find an excuse to hate the Great Satan even if we were doing nothing more than sitting on our ass and twiddling our thumbs.

We aren’t “occupying” their country. We are trying to stop a remake of 9/11. At least that was the original objective, which I supported despite being a pacifist by nature.

I agree that it’s time to get out because I see no clear cut objective any more. Bush dropped the ball by invading Iraq and now Obama has deflated that very same ball by pretending it’s a bat.

I have a close Turkish in-law.  Turkdy is a a secular country.  It may have a large population with a muslim background, but most are “not religious,” as my in-law insists on saying.  In fact, she finds that the Turkish community near her in the states are here for “religious freedom” because it’s harder for them to practice their religion openly in Turkey.  So when she goes to that community near her, she feels a bit strange because she is “not religious.”

And may I ask what country was represented most in the group that carried out 9/11.

It was insulting when O told many AAs who supported Hillary they were racist.  It was insulting when O played Jay Z’s “99 Problems and Bitch Ain’t One” on taking the podium after a primary victory.  He was insulting when he claimed I would vote for him while his followers would not vote for Hillary.  It was insulting when he used the “lipstick on a pig” comment and then pretended he wasn’t really referring to Palin.  It was insulting to a female reporter when O called her “sweetie.”

With you progressives the insult is always the stench of your sense of superior attitude and your condescension.

What is insulting to us is that you feel you can define what is and is not insulting.  You post a comment that is about something that only an idiot would not understant–that we are unpopular in that part of the world.  We all say, “DUH!  You think so”  And then I pointed out how there are times we don’t mind being hated because we consider the source of the hate.  I may have hit a nerve or something, so somehow you are never not being nasty, but I and we are.

The only way you would ever consider us intelligent or would ever concede a point to us is in the unlikely event that we would all drink the O Kool Aid and become lobotomized obots.

the apology took place in Sterling, VA.

STERLING, Va. (AP) – A senior Pentagon official apologized Friday to Washington-area Muslims for the burning of Qurans at a military base in Afghanistan.

Peter Lavoy, acting assistant secretary of defense for Asia and Pacific security affairs, said the military is investigating what occurred and that all 140,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan are being retrained in the handling of religious materials.

Lavoy apologized multiple times during a brief speech during prayer services at the ADAMS Center in Sterling, one of the largest mosques in the country.

Afghan Policeman Kills Two U.S. Officers in Shooting Over Quran Burning

Two high-ranking U.S. military advisers were killed Saturday during a clash with an Afghan national at Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry headquarters, according to Afghan and Western officials.

An American colonel and major were both found shot in the head at the busy ministry compound that is the nerve center for the Afghan law enforcement, according to one Western official in Kabul.

Afghan and American officials shut down the compound as they launched an investigation into the killings in one of the most heavily guarded parts of the capital.

Top U.S. military officials said they were still trying to determine the identity of the attacker. But one Western official in Kabul said that the two Americans were shot by an Afghan policeman upset about the burning of Qurans earlier this week at a U.S. military base.

Hours after the shooting, the Taliban issued a statement claiming that the attacker was an insurgent infiltrator who killed the Americans in retaliation for the Quran burning. In the statement, the Taliban said the assailant called to inform the insurgent group that he had carried out the attack and escaped unharmed.

Clinton’s approval skyrocketed the last time some frisky Republicans made good on their impeachment dreams.  At the end, he would have been reelected in a landslide had he been able to run for a 3d term.

Clinton’s impeachment was about lying under oath about his affair with Lewinsky which many people thought was “petty” and should not have been an impeachable offense.  I agreed but Obama could be impeached on “real issues”.  However I don’t think it’s going to happen unless Obama does win re-election and the repubs. win a majority in the Senate and maintain and/or increase their numbers in the House.  Then Obama better watch out.  Basically that’s what happened to “Tricky Dick”.  Of course Nixon resigned rather than face the almost certain knowledge of impeachment.

One of the reasons I come to this blog is because issues such as these are brought up by someone with credibility to discuss them. And after much consideration of the issue at hand I have concluded that after an initial apology for an obvious boneheaded decision that should have been the end of it.

I still do not agree with Gingrich that making an apology is “surrender.” And I doubt anyone’s arguments could sway me to change that opinion. This is now very clearly Obama’s war.

HelenK2  -can anyone blame them with being fed up? Not to oversimplify – but I think back to elementary school.  There were always a few bullies in the crowd.  If I recall, it never worked trying to appease bullies and certainly not apologizing to them because they used some “stupid or irrational reason” for being offended.  The only thing that works with bullies is standing up to them and saying “you’re not going to put up with their bullying behavior anymore.”  Somehow our nation’s leaders never learned this basic principle back in elementary school.

Another article by NQ that promotes an environment of hate toward Muslims. Reading through this thread of comments suggests a high level of ignorance about Muslims and what the U.S. is doing in Afghanistan.

Wishful thinking by you LJ, to say we should just ignore this incident and carry on like nothing has or is happening in Afghanistan. No apology is needed. That really is your solution. That everything is fine, as long as we do not apologize.

Greenwald has it right as he usually does with his comment here:

        http://www.salon.com/2012/02/26/the_causes_of_the_protests_in_afghanistan/singleton/

As Greenwald says and as I said in my original post here, it is not just about burning Korans.

“Protesters in Kabul interviewed on the road and in front of Parliament said that this was not the first time that Americans had violated Afghan cultural and religious traditions and that an apology was not enough.“This is not just about dishonoring the Koran, it is about disrespecting our dead and killing our children,” said Maruf Hotak, 60, a man who joined the crowd on the outskirts of Kabul, referring to an episode in Helmand Province when American Marines urinated on the dead bodies of men they described as insurgents and to a recent erroneous airstrike on civilians in Kapisa Province that killed eight young Afghans.“They always admit their mistakes,” he said. “They burn our Koran and then they apologize. You can’t just disrespect our holy book and kill our innocent children and make a small apology.” “”Members of Parliament called on Afghans to take up arms against the American military, and Western officials said they feared that conservative mullahs might incite more violence at the weekly Friday Prayer, when a large number of people worship at mosques.“Americans are invaders, and jihad against Americans is an obligation,” said Abdul Sattar Khawasi, a member of Parliament from the Ghorband district in Parwan Province, where at least four demonstrators were killed in confrontations with the police on Wednesday.”"It’s comforting to believe that these violent protests and the obviously intense anti-American rage driving them is primarily about anger over the inadvertent burning of some religious books: that way, we can dismiss the rage as primitive and irrational and see the American targets as victims. But the Afghans themselves are making clear that this latest episode is but the trigger for — the latest symbol of — a pile of long-standing, underlying grievances about a decade-old, extremely violent foreign military presence in their country. It’s much more difficult to dismiss those grievances as the by-product of primitive religious fanaticism, so — as usual — they just get ignored.”By the way it is protestors who are being killed outside of U.S. bases by it looks like Afghan police.

How can the military on one hand claim that the reason the Korans were confiscated was because the radicals had written messages to one another on them and on the other hand claim that their destruction was an accident?

Please understand, I am not taking sides. The logic baffles me. And the lack of real information is so minimal and full of spin.

    Hello
I heard you on the Batchelor last night and am in agreement with you and the language here is even more forceful – congrats on a good piece.   The creepy boot-licking, the bowing and scraping of President Obama and others down the chain of command is breathtaking in its obeisance and bewildering in its intent.  But I think yourself and others have accepted the presupposition that the prisoners should be supplied with, or even possess  Korans in the first place.  Is it a prison or is it a Madras?  Here is a bit I wrote ( when the story broke, before anyone was killed):

Afghans were unexcited, even blasé, when our Marines were recently
caught on camera urinating on the dead bodies of their(the Afghans)
Taliban comrades. Hey, no problemo, amigo, we can dig it. But
accidentally toss a Quran in the garbage and all hell breaks loose.
Plainly, the whole of Afghan society is gripped by a kind of collective
hysteria, an obsessional behavior rooted in a sick pit of superstitious
tribalism, whipped to a psychotic fury by so-called Imams (aka opium
dealers). Good job, President Obama. The prison library for Taliban
terrorists is well stocked: books of inspiring Islamic songs and poetry,
“hadith” interpretation tracts, 70 different editions of the Quran,
along with a a new “I Moved Your Cheese: For Those Who Refuse to Live as
Mice in Someone Else’s Maze” as well as an old dog-eared copy of Dan
Greenberg’s “How To Be a Jewish Mother”. Oy.

Does anyone really think it a capital idea to stoke the religious mania
of those who ALREADY COMMITTED A CRIME IN THE NAME OF ALLAH with more of
the mumbo-jumbo that forms the filamentous skeleton of their mania?
Kinda like giving the alkie whiskey for breakfast.  Here’s an idea: at
Bagram, we confer the jailed terrorists with unlimited access to The
World Book Encyclopedia and bequeath the Qurans to The Afghan home for
    Advanced Alzheimer patients.

what does afghanistan have that is  worth the price we are paying to be there??
Other than heroin poppies and a great drug smugglers route , no oil, nothing of real value that I know of.

no change in backtrack’s policy of having our military train the afghan military.
before one more  of our military dies trying to teach the unteachable , let backtrack get his skinny ass over there and start the teaching
