This is how upside down my world is! I think Karl Rove’s remarks are so smart and so insightful. Yet I still wish, especially for Joe and Valerie Plame Wilson, that he’d been “frog-marched” out of the White House. But, damn, I do admire this guy’s mind and knowledge, and his ability to CLEARLY explain complex processes to all of us, and to do so without rancor or anger or prejudice (as opposed to Dick Morris’s obsession with bashing the Clintons that fatally cripples his credibility):

Morris’s hatred for the Clintons truly IS amazing. A dark look comes over his face whenever they’re mentioned, and he seems to start babbling incoherently. You’d think he’d at least try to resist looking like a demon is pulling his strings, but no!

He does seem to particularly dislike Hillary. You have to wonder exactly what happened to make him so bitter. That hatred severely colors all of his opinions and diminishes their effect — that plus the fact that Morris is rarely correct.

I have to say that Rove does appear to offer objective analysis in a very cool-headed way. Despite everything that happened, I can see why people in the Bush administration listened to him.

Why I’m asking is that at a time when the huge container ships coming from Asia steam in the the Pacific to Seattle for unloading we saw few to now ships — when usually the major shipping traffic lanes are very busy.

I don’t believe in pre-judging performance. It’s all too common for people to make pre-judgements and then seek confirmation in every word, deed, and action. I’m willing to give the guy a chance. And in any case, I feel certain that whatever he does won’t be as bad as what we would have gotten from a president McCain. But I won’t be giving him a pass when he screws up, as he undoubtedly will in at least some cases.

If he has time and power to influence the Chicago Olympics, he should be able to call a press conference to detail some plans to turn the economy around. He must be waiting for his advisors to tell him what he tinks. He may not be president yet, but a few choice words to indicate what he plans to do when he gets to the Oval Office (other than prop his feet on the desk) to turn things around instead of letting Nancy Pelosi get on the news everyday and confuse everyone, might help.

I’m in Michigan, so you’d have to take this with a grain of salt, but I was out today and stores were pretty busy, but there were sales everywhere. I talked to some salespeople in a Parisienne, who told me that they’re just being sent “whatever they’ve got extra of in Chicago”. Apparently they’re not confident of a big 3 comeback, so they’re trying to keep from sending a bunch of stuff only to be clearanced out later. I also went to a smaller Sears store for boots for my littlest guy (I was hoping for some Lands End boots) and found that they had one pair of boys boots. I’m not talking styles of boots, I’m talking pairs. One. Now, I shouldn’t complain, because, as luck would have it, they were actually his size, but I couldn’t help feeling a little like I was in Russia — “So you want boots? We got boots. What? You no like my boots? BAH!” I have no idea what the price was, but I bought them because I don’t have time to drive from store to store searching for the one store that would not only have boots, but choices of boots. I’m dreading the day that I buy moldy cheese because it’s the only one in the store.

We’ve got empty stores in the strip malls showing up every day. Most empty ones are chains — Pier One, Cost Plus, Linens and More, Bombay, etc. What’s worse than whole stores gone, though, is that the stores that are left are spreading their inventory around to make it look like it’s filling the store. Even the dollar store looks empty, although when I asked, they denied it.

Seeing no (zero) container ships headed for Seattle — while I saw several headed up to Canada was unsettling. Generally we are on constant watch for the huge Container ships when we cross the shipping lanes in our very slow very energy efficient little sailboat.

These containers are loaded on trains and trucks and then they head east.

Without this primary document — there will always be doubts. And then what if a foreign intelligence service has evidence to support one of the many theories — can we say blackmail?

Gee — and women can’t even get the ERA passed. The job requirements for the President have been part of the Constitution for a long time — there should be NO surprises that if there are any questions then PRIMARY documents must be produced.

A Genealogist could not testify in court that Obama is a Natural born citizen based on the remoteness of the copy of an abstract of a birth certificate — that copy is too far removed from the primary document.

Here in Encinitas (San Diego County, CA) some smaller stores and restaurants are going out of business. The crowds at the malls are much smaller, in my opinion. At the Encinitas Target yesterday there were several racks of reduced women’s clothes including a 75% off rack. I don’t remember seeing so much reduced stuff in previous years before Christmas.

The rise of food prices in the summer was taking its toll on my budget. I had eliminated such things as milk and cheese from my meals because they were so expensive. The price of food and gasoline is now going down, quickly for gas, slowly for food. Many restaurants in town are sending great coupons through the mail. I have never before received so many buy-one-get-free meal coupons.

Try powder milk from Walmart. I think is better than bottled milk for the simple reason that it has less calcium and too much calcium is not good also. It tastes great and you never have to run to Walgreens to buy a gallon.

My sister-in-law and her husband have owned the same diner for 27 years in a major city-business this past year and a half has been declining rapidly and they put it on the market so they could retire with the money they now have–they haven’t gotten a bite in 7 months. They’re not looking forward to BO’s tax policies. Consumers have very little money to spend–heating fuel, electricity, food and gas has bled us practically dry. How could we have money leftover for extras? And another thing when Chelsea went to Sidwell Friends the economy was doing much better and I had alot more money–to have so many people out of work and be on the brink of a depression and send your kids to a 30,000 a year school is disgusting but of course they don’t care, just like all the other politicians and CEO’s who are flying around in private jest. Maybe we’ll have a revolution and storm the Bastille(oh I mean Capitol Hill).

That is the crux of the issue, and the one part of the economic crisis you won’t hear anyone in media or government talk about out loud – the fact that you can’t have a consumer economy when half or more of the people in it have no discretionary income, or not even enough income for the bare necessities. In the past 8 years, American businesses overall saw a 20% rise in productivity, and yet none of that got passed on to the workers, it all went to stockholders and CEOs. Meanwhile, gasoline increased in cost 300% (down now, but for how long?), heating oil and natural gas by 100%, food by 50%, medical insurance by 100%…is it any wonder the economy is in the crapper? The sad fact is, economies don’t function when too few people have all of the money, which is the dirty little secret no one dares to speak aloud lest they be accused of “socialism”. Well, Adam Smith, the grand poobah of capitalism, noted hundreds of years ago that the tendency of capitalist systems is for wealth to concentrate into fewer and fewer hands, and we’ve been through some 30 years of policy designed to speed up wealth concentration. Government can essentially slow down wealth concentration in only two ways: by mandating higher wages or through progressive tax policies. These things are necessary evils to keep a capitalist economy functioning at the greatest level of efficiency. But for the past 30 years, the party that has predominated in power has opposed both of those mechanisms, with the predictable results we’re seeing. And now it’s a surprise that the economy is broken?

As for it being somehow reprehensible for the Obamas to send their kids to the same school the Clintons chose for Chelsea, there’s no “there” there. It is by all accounts a good school. Yes, it’s private, and if you will recall, the Clintons took a lot of flack from rightwingers (who routinely private school their own kids) for sending Chelsea there rather than a public school in DC. But DC public schools aren’t really an option, I would think, for the same reason they weren’t a viable option for Chelsea: security. You just aren’t going to be able to have the same level of security at a public school, and if you were to attempt it, it would be at great cost and with great intrusion upon the other students attending the school. I don’t see this as a legitimate source for complaint, regardless of what the Obamas are spending to send their girls to Sidwell. The public isn’t picking up the tab on that – the Obamas are.

I just think in a world where people actually gave thought to how their actions are viewed by the very people they serve choosing an alternative school or one less expensive would say alot. Indirectly I might be paying for the school since the President’s salary is paid for by taxpayers. However, I understand they are millionaires.

I agree with you about the economy for sure. If you want a consumer-driven society then the consumer must have some discretionary capital. Call it what you like, it’s a reality.

The private school issue is one only because Democrats oppose vouchers. That’s the reason Hillary and Bill caught flack. And the same goes for the 0bamas only more so because they’re AA and one of the main problems in the AA community are the dreadful public schools which bleed the heart, minds and enthusiasm of inner city kids. Many AA parents want vouchers but it gets put down by their leadership in support of the oppressive Teacher’s Union.

I personally don’t blame or begrudge the 0bamas sending their kids to private school. But it is hypocritical. I also think the Security issue is exaggerated. Think the Sidwell School won’t in this post 9/11 world have their privacy invaded on? Especially for 2 high profile AA kids whose father is getting more death threats than any president in history?

I criticized the Clintons too over sending Chelsea to private school although I didn’t blame them. Democrats have to stop jerking the minority community around in favor of the Teacher’s Union political support. It’s hypocritical and I’m personally tired of it.

I have to live among kids who are really getting jerked around because of an inferior education. It’s sad to see the light go out of the eyes of kids before they hit puberty. And then have the rest of the society complain when they have to foot the burden of welfare and the cost of imprisoning uneducated minorities.

This is a larger issue and Democrats should be called on the carpet about it. Sorry, if the 0bamas have to bear the brunt of it, but it had to happen sooner or later.

Even in non-urban areas, such as my state, a lot of states found ways to continue de facto segregation – and consequent underfunding – of majority AA schools after court-ordered desegregation.

And then conservatives want to blame it all on the teachers. For one thing, you aren’t going to get high quality teachers for $25K per year. For another, even with the best teachers, a school with no books, maps, or other instructional aids isn’t going to be able to do a good job educating kids. The voucher issue, for conservatives anyway, has never been about helping poor kids get into good schools – it’s been all about their frustration that there is a large pile of money going to education that none of them can make a profit from, and the desire to reimburse people for re-segregating schools. Over the long term it would accomplish nothing more than making education more expensive while destroying public education altogether. Last of all, here’s a dirty little secret about private schools – a lot of them suck really hard, particularly church schools. Because they weren’t set up in the first place to provide higher quality education, but rather to indoctrinate kids into particular religious beliefs. They still cost more per kid than public schools though – even though they typically pay their teachers less and provide even less in the way of educational materials. It’s a boondoggle, and not one for which taxpayers should be picking up the tab.

How do I know? I spent 10 years selling educational materials, and have been in every school – public and private – in my state. It may not be exactly the same everywhere, but I know from personal experience how it is here.

There are ways to improve the schools, but they have little to do with standardized testing or allowing people to make a profit, and a lot more to do with spending what’s necessary to attract quality people as teachers and provide decent facilities and materials.

mimi – I think it would be far worse for them to send the kids to public schools, because the costs of security in a public school would likely be astronomical, and the taxpayers would be picking up the tab for that. Sending them to private school eliminates a lot of the security costs that would come with sending them to private schools. And we’d probably be talking about two different schools, with large security contigents/expenses for each, thanks to the age difference between the girls. With them going to the same private school, the security detail can not only be smaller, but can cover both kids.

Hard though it might be for you, try thinking for a moment. Say the kids go to public schools. As noted, they will go to two different ones due to the difference in their ages. So you’ve got a security detail posted outside the classroom where each kid is. Then you’ve got another security detail posted outside the school watching everyone that comes and goes. You’re talking at least 2 people per child, at a minimum of $50K per year each, or $200K per year – minimum. I’m guessing it would be more like twice that. It not only wouldn’t be right to pass that off to the taxpayers, it would be stupid of the Obamas to pay it out of pocket when they could send both kids to the same private school, pay the tuition out of their own pockets, and cut the security detail in half or more.

Basically, your argument is that you’d be happy to waste several hundred thousand dollars on additional security – and preferably, you’d like to force the Obamas to pay it themselves – if it would allow you to dictate to the Obamas where their kids will go to school.

Sorry, that’s just stupid. And that’s all I have to say to you on the issue.

A security detail for the presidents kids is typically is one SS guy and an on call unit somewhere nearby, per kid. They also typically blend into the background so as not to disrupt the life of the child. We as citizen accept the cost of these details and they vary from president to president because presidents have different numbers of kids. Now if you are going to continue on with this ludicrous line of rezoning that we can’t expect the change we can believe in because BOBO is trying save us money, LOL, do what you have to do.
