ABC’s Jake Tapper Tells the Truth about Media Bias — a blockbuster interview in polite language

Add Jake Tapper, one of our more reliable reporters, to the list of people who have left the reservation – at least for the moment. Back in late October, 2008, John King of CNN gave an interview calling his own media colleagues “out of touch,” lambasting them for media bias in the unfair treatment of Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and John McCain. Tapper goes on the record to make some of the same points here, but clearly we did not need to wait four years to have this answer. From Mediaite:

In an interview on Tuesday with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham, ABC News’ White House correspondent Jake Tapper …said that he was concerned that key issues, like the economy, were being ignored in favor of political issues like Mitt Romney’s tax returns. Tapper said that he hopes the media does not unfairly cover this election and favor one candidate over another, as he says the institution did in 2008.

Listen to the entire Ingraham/Tapper interview here:

Tapper pointed out that regarding the economy, that “People are hurting out there. I’d like to see more action taken and more emphasis given to this issue.” He goes on to offer up the money line, which he is clearly hesitant to say:

“I have said before… [that I] thought the media helped tip the scales. I didn’t think the coverage in 2008 was especially fair to either Hillary Clinton or John McCain,” said Tapper. “Sometimes I saw with story selection, magazine covers, photos picked, [the] campaign narratives, that it wasn’t always the fairest coverage…and I hope that doesn’t happen again.”

But it is happening and it will continue to happen until we shed lots of sunlight on this issue.

To this day, the media is still far more preoccupied with Hillary Clinton’s hairdo, make-up or the lack of it, her wardrobe, ass size and age. Otherwise, we might have to dwell on something significant — like a world event or an accomplishment. Likewise, in the current Presidential contest, the media seems far more preoccupied with finger pointing than pressing for answers about concrete policy proposals — and sharing them. Is this the way we want the debate to play out?

Ms. Ingraham also plays Mark Halperin’s sound bite that the “media basically does whatever the president wants.” Clearly, President Obama is not the first to enjoy Presidential media cover. President Bush got lots of it.

In all cases, we deserve better. Both sides need to be grilled – but good. Regarding Tapper’s statements that any politician will “take wiggle room” if you give it to them, no politician should be allowed to skirt the issues when so many are losing jobs and homes.

It must be the tanking ratings of major news outlets that is forcing the likes of Wolf Blitzer, Norah O’Donnell, Tapper, King, Campbell Brown et al to finally notice what we have been complaining about for the past five years.

I encourage you to listen to the entire interview. Tapper is currently writing a book on Afghanistan. He and Ingraham discuss the horrifying situation there regarding our troop draw down and the behavior of Afghan security forces, some of whom are murdering American troops. Why are we not talking about this?

It is about 70 days to the election. Are we going to focus squarely on the economy, health care and foreign policy – rather than the latest flying squirrel designed to distract and demagogue?

What’s it to be, mainstream media? I won’t hold my breath.

Rasmussen is reliable and there is another key date coming up (don’t know what it is) where Akin MUST drop out.

      • jrterrier

i think the deadline is late Sept, maybe Sept 29. That’s what I heard reported. The problem of course would be that whoever replaced him would have a very short time to battle McCaskill.

      • Dissentispatriotic

I believe that he must drop out by September 25 or 28 but it has to be done by court order. Not sure who tries to order him out – the candidate himself, his own party or another candidate – but he missed the deadline for a simple fix. Plus, he cost the candidate who may take his place a month of vital campaign time.

        • foxyladi14

He should drop out the day the dem convention opens. lolol

Just saw a news article that his donations are “pouring in”. Jeez. I hope that’s just his campaign being hyperbolic. Even though he was discouraged from going to the RNC, he decided he had to go to Tampa anyway, just not the convention.

Great post. I like Tapper. He treats his journalist role seriously and questions authority. Call me crazy, but I actually think both parties may be looking for distractions because they are scared to death to really talk about the economy.

I wholeheartedly agree that Biden is crazy like a fox. I think he is very attractive to the DEM base and we kid ourselves if we think that his “crazy” talk turns them off.

More than two-thirds of Iowa, the nation’s biggest corn producer, is suffering extreme or exceptional drought – @AP
and the EPA will not change the quota that is to be used for ethenol

    • FLDemFem

The biggest problem with drought-stricken corn is that if you try to use it or feed it, it causes nitrate poisoning from the fertilizer that has not been properly used by the corn due to drought. I remember seeing deer dead from it during a drought where they had been snacking on the corn and it killed them. So you can’t use drought-stricken corn even for cattle feed. That causes a huge rise in feed prices and also in the cost of beef which goes up.

      • HELENK2

thank you. I did not know that. I thought that maybe it could be used for feed and help bring food prices down

    • HObama HObamanana

  • http://noquarterusa.net Larry Johnson

great piece Ani! Tapper is a true journalist.

    • AnitaFinlay

Thanks, Larry. But even Jake is hamstrung. If you listen to this interview, he is honest and also not given to hyperbole at all, which I appreciate. He is so in the minority when he asks an intelligent, probing question and sticks out like a sore thumb so much that there really doesn;t seem to be room in today’s press corp for any pressing beyond that, even though he would just be doing his job.

  • jrterrier

here’s another recent example of media bias.

“White House Aide David Plouffe Takes Money Indirectly from Iran — and Nobody Seems to Notice”
    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/08/23/david-plouffe-iran

  • DianaLC

    Anita,
Thank you for bringing this issue back for discussion. We take it so much for granted nowadays that most of those in the media are biased for their chosen one. The anger, the frustration has just worn me down, and I assume it’s true for others. If I begin to get as upset as I was during the ’08 primary, I will experience a heart attack or stroke, I’m sure.
It is slightly hopeful that some are trying harder to get off the reservation, as you call it. And, I understand completely your adding the “at least for the moment.” I certainly won’t be holding my breath for a major stampede away from that reservation any time soon, and I am sure the pressure to stay is great.
Makes me so sick to think about. Our supposed fourth estate, the supposed guarantor of truth and honesty from our politicians, the ones supposedly keeping our representative republic alive.
I sit here thinking of all the things that Obama has done that have not even caused a squeak from the media. Laura Ingraham pointed out Obama’s habit of being very good at getting things done by “fiat,” but not so good at trying to get things done if he has to work with Congress, and those things are the major things that need to be done.
However, those things he’s getting done by fiat scare me very much. We need to develop a list of all of them and then, if (crossing my fingers here, hoping with all my might) Romney is elected, we need to remind him of them constantly until they are either overturned or discussed publicly so the people can give their opinion about them. Most of the public know nothing of them because the media ignores them as “not interesting.”‘
Please, there is much about Fox that makes me nervous, but I try to watch other stations and I just get entirely upset, so it’s back to Fox I go and try to ignore the personalities that bother me. (I have to admit that I like it MUCH BETTER when Laura replaces O’Reilly on his nights off.)
Otherwise, my news nowadays comes from the Web instead.

  • jrterrier

the sunday show is so much better when he is moderating than when stephanopoulos is.

  • no_longer_a_democrat

nothing new… I remember in 2008, I just realized how liberal and blatantly just a shill for the dems the MSM was… Hillary wasn’t their “chosen” candidate so they lambasted her with everything they had. Same will happen in 2012, they’re job is to re-elect their Messiah Barry, they’re just too stupid to realize the sane independent minded Americans have figured that out and basically tune them out.

    American Media ==> POS.

I don’t trust them or rely on them for any information anymore and or in the future.

    • HARP2

      Media is dead.

  • HObama HObamanana

Juan Williams was on The Five today and when asked about Tapper’s comments would not admit that he was speaking the truth. He would only admit that most “journalists” were Dems. Regardless, thank you for posting this obvious truth.

    • AnitaFinlay

Well, that is why I posted it, even if it is obvious. Mr. Williams is one who will still not admit it. :)

    campaign cash from media companies.
    boatloads to backtrack
    romney not so much

  • akaPatience

Thanks for bringing this to our attention Anita. Unfortunately I have little hope media will improve. For instance, it seems that abortion conveniently becomes (IMO) a much bigger issue right before a presidential election than it deserves to be and media gleefully place it on center stage in order to rile female voters. Thus, witness the controversy surrounding the Missouri Republican candidate for US Senate. According to the Washington Post, this man’s primary campaign was bankrolled by liberals to the tune of $1.5 million. And he’s delivered for them Big Time by making his now-infamous and totally boneheaded remarks. Yep, just what the spin doctor ordered.
Now, I wonder if the NYT will come through once again with an election-eve front page story of unsubstantiated rumors about marital infidelity on the part of the Republican candidate? It happened 4 years ago with McCain and if memory serves they also did it to GHW Bush. In Romney’s case maybe it’ll take the form of an election eve article about Mormon polygamists. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.

    • HObama HObamanana

Here is a link to the Washington Post story making this assertion.
