Saturday Musings [Open Thread]

Where are we today?

  • Labor Day weekend!
  • Republican Convention over
  • Democratic Convention set to start
  • 65 days to the election
  • 141 days until our next president is sworn in

Labor Day weekend is both a time of fun and point of reflection. Summer is over and next week we return to work and school. That is, for those of us with a job and those that can afford to go to school.

As a point of reflection? Are you better off and better positioned this year than last or four years ago? Happy? Disappointed? Angry?

And why are you here and not out enjoying the Labor Day weekend?

    • HObama HObamanana

Brilliant is the only word to describe it. Thank you for turning me on to this blog. It’s refreshing to see someone tell the truth in a language so immediately understandable.

      • KenoshaMarge

        I thought so.

I found the link in a post at American Thinker by Clarice Feldman. I thought her post was worth reading too.

Glad to share. I read “Clarices Pieces” every Sunday morning. Usually worth the time. Maybe because she too is a recovering Democrat.

Pissed off but determined to retool and reboot my business that I had to shut down this last year. I’ll be working this weekend but I don’t mind. I am already sensing that wind of success that will be returning to America starting in November and I’m ready to set sail.

Thanks Helen. Can’t keep an old coach down for too long. =)

Best of luck retired! It’s people like you with guts and gumption that made this great country. And being pissed off is often a good incentive.

Yeah, that black and white TV era – when
    there
were great jobs, Made in America was the standard, not the exception,
housing was affordable, gas was cheap, kids could play outside all day
without fear, schools were good – and safe, and democrats were honest

Yes, won’t it be wonderful to have NICE people in the White House. Just plain ole nice people, the kind you want for a neighbor. That will be so refreshing.

  • getfitnow

    OMG.

Drudge has a photo up of the rains wrecking that sand statue
of Obama in Charlotte. Is that an apt metaphor for this guy’s failures, or
what? The narcissist who dreamed of being immortalized in stone on Mount
Rushmore, now watching his sand-carved likeness being washed away by the RACIST
    rain. Too perfect.

    • jrterrier

i’m dumbstruck that they would put that sculpture up. won’t it remind people of the greek columns that were nothing but artifice?

    • HObama HObamanana

I’m not going to check it out but I bet Chris Matthews is crying hysterically.

it’s now a symbol of the legacy that was Obama…..

  • Popsmoke

i have not posted politically for a while and will not be posting on election postings until after the election is over. I am just getting sick of the stupid spin coming from both sides. We are losing our republic and most are pointing the finger at the other guy to lay blame. When in reality the blame falls on each one of us.
So i would like to entertain you all by asking you to read Colonel Pat Langs (a good friend of Larrys) September 1 posting on his site at

    • http://www.theindependentview.com/ Matthew J. Weaver

What is the “stupid spin” you refer to from Romney and Ryan? I do not see any. They do not need to as Obama’s record is so attrocious the facts speak for themselves. Now Obama, that is a different matter entirely. And as you point out, one that will be solved in November.

    • HObama HObamanana

Even though your link did not post, I found his blog and read the article you intended. While I somewhat understand the point of his post, what he fails to mention is that because Romney does understand how to assemble the best people for the task at hand, he is well positioned to bring about the changes we need. Mr. Lang also ignores the fact that it was Obama who said “I won” when approached by Republicans attempting to work with him.

      • jrterrier

        pls post the link.

        • HObama HObamanana

          No problem. Here you go.

    • HELENK2

I can understand your feelings on the election. but if you do not vote, it is a vote for the greatest enemy of this country in my lifetime to stay in office.
Does anyone expect miracles from Mitt NO. do we expect him to keep his word? from his history he does. It is a start not a finish to get the country back on the right track. It took years to get to this place, it will take years to fix things. It will take the will of the people, much better education and a lot of information sharing to get the facts to the people
If i did not believe that we could make a difference, what hope is there for my children, grand children and great grand children?

POPSMOKE do not let the bastards get you down

      • TeakWoodKite

…although it is one big monster with two cheeks, Popsmoke, we are all in or we are not. What helenk said.

    • jrterrier

I don’t understand your position at all and the article you sent is no oracle. To me it is immediately suspect because it starts with a faulty premise borrowed from yet one more liberal magazine, the Atlantic.
In quoting the Atlantic, it starts out with a strike against it. The argument that in “six years of campaigning for the presidency, [Romney] has managed to leave such a hazy and sour impression in the minds of the mass of American voters that he is barely regarded as a human being” makes little sense to me. It ignores that the inhuman meme is driven by the $100 million of mostly false advertising that the Obama campaign has waged against him, aided and abetted by the MSM, which is increasingly lacking in any journalistic or other integrity.
If anyone is confused about who Romney is it is because they are wilfully blinding themselves to the evidence. He is a married father of 5 sons and grandfather of 18. If you cannot at least know by watching him interact with his wife, children and grandchildren, none of whom have led scandalous lives, that he is a loving human being then I don’t know how you assess a person’s humanity. There are plenty of stories and testimonials in the public domain of his charitable activities, some of which were presented at the RNC.
If you and your Marine friend were looking for words, or political treatises to assess Romney’s humanity then I am not very impressed by your metrics. As we all know, and is proven every day, talk is cheap.
Beyond that, he has a real history that can be reviewed and assessed as the founder of Bain Capital, the CEO of the Olympics, the Governor of MA. It is certainly legitimate to look at that history and come away thinking that you disagree with him but it is completely illegitimate to say that you have insufficient evidence upon which you can judge him.
The second part of the article — that a President is not a CEO — is correct. But certain leadership traits transfer across many fields. While no one can guarantee whether Romney will be successful as President, his experience and past conduct give me great confidence that he bring spending under control, will not engage in rampant cronysm, and that his governing principles are in keeping with my own values.
Beyond that, your friend doesn’t offer an alternative.

    • Hokma

I read Colonel Lang’s post and agree with most of what he said. One thing he said I do disagree with. He said:

“In Romney’s case, his cretin business friends seem to believe, as does he, that he would arrive in Washington with the discretionary power of a corporate CEO.”

He forgets that Romney was Governor did successfully negotiate with his opposition, so Romney knows better. As importantly, Romney was not simply the CEO of a corporation, he was the head of a company that invested other people’s money in other companies who were seeking certain results. So he never had that much discretion. In addition, was his Olympics experience where he certainly had to deal with many levels of country organizations and governments as well as many corporate sponsors and vendors.

      • TeakWoodKite

I think the objection was his “cretin friends”…

The problem is some Republicans are jumping on the same bandwagon. This why they lose. When the Dems decide on a nominee they stay on the same page and criticism is muted. Republicans are the only idiots I’ve seen that are quick to tear down members of their own party in recent years.

A word to the wise Republicans: SHUT UP.

According to new research released today by Rasmussen, more voters
identify themselves as Republican than ever in the last 8 years. More
importantly, by a 4 point margin, more voters identify as GOP than
Democrat. This is the largest spread between the parties ever. Worse for
Democrats, the number of voters who identify with their party is also
    approaching an historic low.

In August, 37.6% of voters identified themselves as Republican. That
is up from 34.9% in July. By contrast, just 33.3% of voters identify
themselves as Democrats. That is very near their historic low in
February, when 32.4% of voters identified as Democrat. The 4.3 margin in
favor of the GOP is the biggest gap ever between the parties. In
November 2010, when the GOP won a landslide in the mid-term elections,
their advantage was just 1.3 points.
