The Atlantic, a once-fine magazine by a once-distinguished James Fallows who writes, “Paul Ryan, Mountaineer” — featured at Memeorandum with Huffington Post, Gawker, CNN, etc. weighing in:

Ryan has told his hometown paper that he has climbed” close to 40″ of the famous “Fourteeners” in Colorado, 54 peaks more than 14,000 feet high. [H]e made this claim a few years ago, before he knew he would be under the scrutiny he is now. [...]

[A Fallows reader tells him] To have climbed forty and not be a resident means that you would have had to devote entire summers to climbing fourteeners, in essence becoming a “lifestyle” hiker/scrambler. …

    ***BREAKING*** Tom Brokaw has been hospitalized.

    Trying to put on a brave face, Brokaw said that the grueling schedule from the Conventions was making him feel light headed. My sources, however, indicate conflicting causes for his sudden illness. One claims that he was misquoted and that it was all the gruel the Democrats were trying to feed the country and apparently served to all media spokespeople that caused severe malnutrition. He recounted how he had suddenly found himself standing in a food stamps line, completely unaware of how he’d gotten there.

    Another source said that the illness was caused by being in too close proximity to Chris Matthews. According to my source, who would only go on record anonymously because MSNBC thugs had threatened to make him kiss Rachel Maddow, Brokaw said that when Matthews spoke all the life giving oxygen was sucked out of the room, being replaced by noxious, poisonous gasses.

    UPDATE: I’ve received another unconfirmed report from the hospital that the cause of Brokaw’s mysterious illness is, in fact, Kool-Aid poisoning.

      I am sobbing.

      He says it was that 1/2 Ambien. You know, that could be true. I used to take Ambien and I had no idea how much it affected my little brain … and, if I took an entire Ambien, I had a terrible time keeping my eyes open when I was driving the next day. That is bad stuff.

      Also: It quits working after a while. It stopped working for me – I’d wake up 2 to 3 hours after I went to sleep. That was due to the pain in my back and neck / nothing to do with insomnia. So it is back to the drawing board for insomnia. Wish I could have a glass of wine or a shot of bourbon but I take medications that forbid my drinking any alcohol. (Including (!) Ambien!!! — which thankfully I stopped taking. And I remember when I had NO insurance and I paid $100 at Costco because there was no generic at that time. STUPID. But I was desperate to sleep, yet again it was pain that awakened me. Oh well.

        Despite my obvious snark and his just as obvious liberal lean I’ve always enjoyed Brokaw. He now narrates a great series about the baseball Hall of Fame members. Seriously wish him the best. But he hasn’t looked well the last few times I’ve seen him on television.

          Oh dear. That is sad to hear. Let’s hope he is okay. And I really hope he doesn’t take Ambien. It is dangerous, and I believe that Kennedy who had taken an Ambien and had a car accident. It is a heavy-duty drug and it slows reflexes, makes one too sleepy for too long, etc.

        I have a sleep disorder that raises its ugly head often. The more tired and wound up I get from working, the more difficult it is for me to sleep. I’ve gone for a few days at a time without sleeping, which is a very unhealthy thing to do.
        Most over the counter and other prescription sleeping medications make me so darned groggy the next day, I don’t like to take them even at small doses. The same goes for some of the “natural” pills.
        The doctor gave me Ambien, and I loved it. I had no side effects—until the third time I took one. I took it to soon and didn’t do as the directions said and take it only when I was going to get into bed IMMEDIATELY after taking it.
        I did what many people do on that drug: I was walking around asleep–naked. It scared the bejeezus out of my kids who quickly grabbed a robe and put me in bed until I stayed there.
        I got off that immediately. Finally the doctor told me to take an Actifed, which did the trick. However, now I can’t get those because of the meth craze. So, I just take one over the counter pill with the diphen…. sometthing (I think?) ingredient in them. They do the trick if I am just experiencing one night of inability to sleep.

          Exactly. And that diphen…etc. (HA!) works. Just do not do what I did in the 1980s when I was so desperate to sleep that I would take 4 or 6 (sometimes MORE!). BENADRYL is what I took. That is the only drug I have ever abused … and it is a miracle my liver still works. It also gave me “restless leg syndrome,” which despite what Bill Maher says, is a REAL CONDITION and maddening because it is impossible to sleep then! I stopped Benadryl, no more restless leg syndrome. These drugs are scary.

          I haven’t taken any for nearly a year. I believe in taking as few drugs as possible because they ALL interact with each other, even if doctors and pharmacists deny it. And none of them explain WHEN and HOW to take medications. I know enough not to take ANY drug when I take Prevacid (formerly Prilosec, which does NOT work). I wait at least one hour — usually two hours — before I take any other drug, even blood pressure medication. Prevacid surely messes up how the drugs get into my system.

      I kind of identify with the young delegate who quit (not because I agree with his views) but because the vote was just a charade. It’s what happened in 2008 to Hillary and her supporters. Obama was selected – not elected.

        I imagine there are a number of us here with exactly the same voting record, myself included. Although I had to really force myself to vote for Kerry, the weakest candidate the Dems could have fielded. It was then that I started to realize
        the Dem party leaders did not have the country’s
        best interests in mind.(I had campaigned hard for Wesley Clark, but he was way too intelligent and independent for them to manipulate.) Their asinine treatment of Hillary Clinton sealed the deal, destroying any loyalty to the Democrats I had left. I’m not crazy about Republicans either, but right now they have the best game in town with Romney.

      You BET I voted for Bush Sr. and for Robert Dole. And I would vote for them again. I always voted. And I volunteered for Bush Sr.’s campaign — I made telephone calls at the Seattle headquarters where my little girl got her photo taken with some of Bush’s children.

      I grew up in a state where there were as many FINE Republican candidates as there were Democratic … and I was raised to vote for the person, not the party. Yes, at times I have wandered over to the left and then back to the right — but NEVER the far left OR the far right. I wish there were a moderate party, but both parties have been taken over by EXTREMISTS, although at least the Republicans are more polite to Democrats (most of the time). I am PROUD of my voting record and, yes, I woud have voted for Bill Clinton because I knew about Bush Jr. in 1998 and KNEW he was not the best choice. (But he had too much money for any other candidate to have a chance. JUST LIKE I supported Bill Bradley rather than Al Gore, who I didn’t like and thought he went overboard on global warming. But Bradley lost and so I supported Al Gore. I also headed a Howard Dean Meetup and even flew to Vermont — but Dean’s campaign was BADLY mismanaged by Joe Trippi who spent money like a drunken sailor.

      THEN, in 2007-2008, I was STUNNED to find myself called a RACIST because I supported Hillary Clinton instead of Obama. (Thank god that the Daily Kos favorite choice, John Edwards, didn’t make it .. they are so good at picking candidates over there. Not.)

      You Obamabots BLEW IT by trying to destroy the lives of people who voiced their concerns about Obama. NOT VERY SMART. Never again will I trust a Democrat — oh, except the Democrat I am likely going to vote for in an open Congressional race. Because he has great business experience as well as government know-how +++ he knows this district intimately.

    The MSM is digging deep to try to find anything to tarnish Paul Ryan’s reputation, no matter how trivial. First, it was his marathon times from the 1990′s, now it’s the number of mountains climbed. It’s all they have against him, they can’t claim that his budgetary proposals are inherently racists for a very obvious reason.

    I began to ponder over all this sudden MSM fascination about exaggeration. Then I recalled Wilt Chamberlain’s famous boast that he had had sex with some incredible number of women. I recall performing a quick calculation at that time and, even assuming a very early age of 11 at which he might have entered puberty, he still would have needed to have sex, as such term is particularly defined by Bill Clinton, with 2.7 women per day, every day. up to the day he made that comment.

    As far as wild exaggerations are concerned, the biggest whopper of them all is “the private sector is doing fine!” as attributed to Barack Obama, August, 2012.

They also are making a big mistake by even associating him with mountain climbing. I saw Wilt Chamberlain during the 1990 Goodwill Games, and he was with the SAME BLONDE every day — and I saw him at least 5 days in a row because I went to all those basketball games as did he.       Well, I am a heathen who wouldn’t be caught dead going to church (and probably would be if I were to permit a funeral service, which I won’t) … but even I found the omission of God offensive. God is a very generic term — the word applies to a great many different religions. And I do believe that there is SOME kind of being because it is nearly impossible to imagine the birth of the universe by pure chance, even though that’s probably how it happened.

    Are there any armchair doctors in the house? I am very curious about something. Since I got a flu bug, my pulmonologist put me on antibiotics and steroids. It’s the damndest thing but my brain synapses seem to fire better. I just played my goof-off game, Mahjongg, and beat my all-time high score. And I notice that I can remember people’s NAMES so much better than usual! (I don’t have to search Google or Wikipedia to remember people’s names, like I often did and was concerned about.) Is it the steroids? What are they doing to my brain? If I could keep thinking like I am, I would love to take them all the time. (Nothing else is different in my daily life.)

      I wouldn’t advise taking either drug for long periods of time. Steroids will kill you from the inside out and antibiotics will destroy your immune system.

      Here’s my armchair doctoring. Perhaps it’s the antibiotics working. Whenever I get antibiotics, I feel an immediate improvement in my mood and mental functioning. I think my body switches from keeping my brain functioning to trying to fight any infection I have.
      Recently I had to go back to the doctor for more antibiotics because my sinus infection had returned. They were hesitant to give them to me again, but I believe I just had an evil long-term infection and it required the second dose to get rid of it. My mind cleared up also.
      Once when I kept getting kidney infections one after another, the doctor decided to hospitalize me for a few days and zap the germs with all he could give. I never got another one of those infections again.
      You may have had a long-term infection.
      But, I can’t compare my feeling to anything in regard to steroids, as I don’t really remember ever having a prescription for steroids other than the tiny dose in the prescribed nasal spray that I use every so often.

        THANK YOU! That makes a lot of sense. I do sometimes get bugs that linger on and on. I had one two years ago that landed me in the hospital for a week, although much of that was because no one checked my blood/oxygen level, which was 83 … after a smart nurse checked it and my doctor saw the # 83, he freaked out and called 911. (A bit of overkill, if you ask me … and it cost me a fortune for the stupid ambulance that took me to a hospital FIVE MINUTES AWAY, and my neighbor was with me and was driving anyway.) And we wonder why medical costs are soaring!

          I went to a clinic to see a doctor and was told I needed to go to a hospital immediately. The nurse said she was going to call an ambulance to take me. I assured her that I could drive there on my own. When I arrived at the emergency room they then chastised me that I drove myself. Lovely people. Ain’t life grand.

    In an unexpected bright side to the DNC’s, they were against Jerusalem being the capital of Israel before there were not really sorta for it, the Palestinians and the Israelis have reached a mutual agreement. They both say it was done for political purposes.

    First, the Israeli response:

    The addition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital to the Democratic platform does not make up for the party’s original intentions, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin said on Thursday

    “I have no doubt that [US President Barack] Obama put Jerusalem back in his party’s platform out of political and electoral considerations and because of the sharp criticism from Israel and the US,” Rivlin stated.

    Next, the Palestinian response:

    Nabil Abu Rdeneh, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the Democrat’s decision might just be “election propaganda.” He said a failure to recognize the Palestinian claim to East Jerusalem will “destroy the peace process” and lead to “endless war.”

    Gee, those Democrats are outstanding stewards of our nation’s standing in the world. I expect the planet will be healing any moment now.

    OMG! Stephanie Cutter just spoke the TRUTH. Cutter said that Barack Obama did NOT READ THE PLATFORM and didn’t know about the language re God/Jerusalem.

    Of course Obama didn’t read it. (Frankly, who would, but Debbie Darling spoke as if Obama were intimately familiar with the platform.)

      I read last night, I believe on Breitbart, that Obama had read the platform before the convention and had approved it. It was only after the Republicans jumped all over it, that they realized it was a bad idea to not include God, and Jeresalum.

And today’s Democrats can’t figure out why sane moderate former Democrats have left the fold? And are worried, very worried, about these clowns running the country? (Or ruining the country) This woman, Wasserman-Schultz, is in a Democratic LEADERSHIP position. It’s downright scary.

They send out DWS to lie and say incredibly stupid things so she’ll be the “face you love to hate” instead of Obama and gang. Then after she’s fulfilled her purpose she’ll be sent to the chopping block and maybe someone like Cutter will take her place.

          Her new doo and the makeup really crack me up. It’s impossible to hide the ugliness of her soul, try as they may. And I’m sure they gave it their best shot. On the bright side, once she is finally thrown under the bus for good she has a legendary future in horror films. A remake of Bride of Frankenstein is long overdue.

          I really feel sorry for Debbie! I think she really wants to be liked but because of her natural hyperactivity she has a hard time shutting up! And I think her desire to be in the limelight has made her a perfect foil for the President! You know what I’d do if I were her – since at this point she may have nothing to lose – I’d go do an interview and say I’m resigning as Dem chairperson. Say I’m sick and tired of lying for the Pres.and regurgitating the stupid talking points I’ve been given! She could change people’s opinion of her with one “stroke”. Of course she’d be “persona non grata” with the dems. but who cares! She’d be a heroine to the rest of the country!

      He didn’t read the health care bill either. He hasn’t worked. As Sununu put it, he spent the first 2 years throwing away stimulus money and allowing Pelosi/Reid ram through health care and the last years fund raising, playing golf and making celebrity personal appearances. It really is breathtaking how lazy he is.

    I was a bit disheartened by how little was made of yesterday’s Villaraigosa-DNC Platform fiasco in today’s WSJ and other news outlets. The WSJ article, for example, said “Many people apparently voted no”. That’s about like saying Jaws was apparently a shark. And that’s the only place I really saw much mention of it at all. I had hoped it was going to be a gamechanger but so far it looks like it definitely won’t be.

    Politico reported, on January 23, 2009, that when approached by Republicans expressing concerns about the amount of spending in the Stimulus package Obama told them, “I won.” That would be three days after Obama took the oath of office.

    The exchange arose as top House and Senate Republicans expressed concern to the president about the amount of spending in the package. They also raised red flags about a refundable tax credit that returns money to those who don’t pay income taxes, the sources said.

    The Republicans stressed that they want to include more middle class tax cuts in the package, citing their proposal to cut the two lowest tax rates — 15 percent and 10 percent — to ten percent and five percent, rather than issue the refundable credit Obama wants.

    Evidence that it was the Republicans attempting to cut taxes for the middle class.

    The National Journal reported, on October 23, 2010, that Mitch McConnell made the statement that “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term President.”

    NJ Does that mean endless, or at least frequent, confrontation with the president?

    McConnell If President Obama does a Clintonian backflip, if he’s willing to meet us halfway on some of the biggest issues, it’s not inappropriate for us to do business with him.

    This makes it clear who was/is responsible for the partisan gridlock in Washington D.C. from the very beginning of the Obama Administration.

        Yes, they are supposed to be investigating. I agree, she is no real threat. But it is the fact that she said it, and it is proven she said it, which is troubling. Especially considering how crazy the Dims have been, making baseless charges of threats and acts of violence perpetrated by the GOP.

        I’m all for giving the other side hell, with an extra dose of fire and brimstone. But actually calling for physical harm? Not this human.
