Open Thread * With Video from Reverend Amy & Perspective on India’s Terrorism Crisis

Okay, warning: As I watched this video, I ended up with coffee pouring out of my nostrils. No joke. Do not drink while watching this:

Many people were touched by Deepak Chopra’s remarks on CNN’s Larry King show last night. Yeah, I know. I usually can’t reach the remote fast enough to switch channels when Chopra comes on my teevee set, but he makes some good points, albeit while missing ALL the components of knowledge that someone like Larry Johnson and his Thanksgiving Day guest today have in abundance. Special thanks to John for sending me this link which, otherwise, I wouldn’t have ever read. You see, it’s a good read if for no other reason than it stimulates thought and opinions galore!

Sometimes I like listening to someone I disagree with vehemently — or who I think is hopelessly naive — because it forces ME to hone my own arguments, to think of the optimal phrases and emphases, and so on.

(CNN) — The Indian city of Mumbai exploded into chaos early Thursday morning as gunmen launched a series of attacks across the country’s commercial capital, killing scores of people and taking hostages in two luxury hotels frequented by Westerners.

Deepak Chopra says extremists could be reacting to Barack Obama's gestures toward Muslims.

Deepak Chopra says extremists could be reacting to Barack Obama’s gestures toward Muslims.

CNN’s Larry King spoke with author Deepak Chopra about the situation.

Larry King: Let’s go to Dr. Deepak Chopra, the physician, philosopher. His new book is "Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment."

Where were you born in India, Deepak?

Deepak Chopra: I was born in Delhi, but I have been in these hotels many, many times. I have stayed there, so I know the scene; I know the restaurants. I have been trying to get in touch with my friends and relatives, some of whom I have spoken to, some of whom I can’t speak to. The lines are jammed. We’re texting each other.

A friend of mine from Egypt was in the restaurant at the Taj hotel when the firing started, and somehow she managed to avoid the fray, hid in a basement and is now holed up in a room which is right next to the Taj hotel and is waiting to be told what to do.

The situation is complex, Larry, because it could inflame to proportions that we cannot even imagine. It has to be contained. We now recognize that this is a global problem, with only a global effort can solve this.

And you know, one of the things that I think is happening is that these militant terrorist groups are actually terrified that [President-elect Barack] Obama’s gestures to the rest of the Muslim world may actually overturn the tables on them by alienating them from the rest of the Muslim world, so they’re reacting to this.

You know, this is Obama’s opportunity to actually harness the help of the Muslims.

You know, there’s 1.8 billion Muslims in the world. That’s 25 percent of the population of the world. It’s the fastest-growing religion in the world. We cannot, if we do not appease and actually recruit the help of this Muslim world, we’re going to have a problem on our hands.

And we cannot go after the wrong people, as we did after 9/11, because then the whole collateral damage that occurs actually aggravates the situation.

In India, this is particularly inflammatory, because there’s a rise of Hindu fundamentalism. We saw what that did in Gujarat, where, you know, Muslims were scorched and they were killed, and there was almost a genocide of the Muslims.

India has 150 million Muslims. That’s more Muslims in India than in Pakistan. So this is an opportunity right now for India and Pakistan to recognize this is their common problem. It’s not a Muslim problem right now; it’s a global problem.

King: Do you think that this is just the beginning, that there’s a potential impact, or more?

Chopra: There is a potential impact of a lot more carnage. But it can be contained. And right now, one of the questions, you know, after I heard Barbara Starr talking about how coordinated this is, that there are militant groups that cross international boundaries, is who is financing this? Where is the money coming from? We have to ask very serious, honest questions. What role do we have in this? Are our petrodollars funding both sides of this war on terrorism? Why are we not asking the Saudis where that money is going that we give them? Is it going through this supply chain to Pakistan?

It’s not enough for Pakistan to condemn it. Pakistan should cooperate with India in uprooting this. They should be part of the surgery that is going to happen.

It’s not enough for Indians to blame Pakistanis. Indians should actually ask the Pakistanis to help them.

And it’s not enough for us to worry about Westerners being killed and Americans being killed. Every life is precious over there. We have got to get rid of this idea that this is an American problem or a Western problem. It’s a global problem, and we need a global solution, and we need the help of all the Muslims, 25 percent of the world’s population, to help us uproot this problem.

King: What does India immediately do?

Chopra: India at this moment has to contain any reactive violence from the fundamentalist Hindus, which is very likely and possible. So India has to condemn that by not blaming local Muslims. They have to identify the exact groups.

And the world has to be very careful that they don’t go after the wrong people. Because if you go after the wrong people, you convert moderates into extremists. It happens every time, and retribution against innocent people just because they have the same religion actually aggravates and perpetuates the problem.

King: Are you pessimistic?

Chopra: I think Mr. Obama has a real opportunity here, but a challenging opportunity, a creative opportunity.

Get rid of the phrase "war on terrorism." Ask for a creative solution in which we all participate.

King: Is it because the war on terrorism really can never be won because the terrorists (inaudible)?

Chopra: Because it’s an oxymoron. It’s an oxymoron, Larry, a war on war, a war on terrorism.

You know, terrorists call mechanized death from 35,000 feet above sea level with a press of a button also terror. We don’t call it that, because our soldiers are wearing uniforms. They don’t see what is happening, and innocent people are being killed. So, you know, terror is a term that you apply to the other.

King: Thanks, Deepak Chopra, as always, extraordinarily enlightening.

Here, they captured a live terrorist. And he said that that they are a part of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (a sister concern of Al_Qaida). It was a strong calculated operation. Reminds me of 9/11

The story here is that the paks came from Karachi by boat to mumbai, and went into terror mode. This is very serious. Expect major tensions between India and Pakistan.

  • Seattle Moss

So whats the difference between a terrorist and a nation state…Terrorists don’t play be the rules and seek out and kill innocent citizens.

We are in the beginning of this war for civilization. Obama won on the platform of dismantling the shield against terrorism. Those that voted for Obama live in a pre 911 mentality and just wish the cruel world will stop on his command.
The terrorists see an opening because they believe that Obama is weak and will refrain from using the brutal tactics of Bush which has kept us safe.
Terrorists relish the fact that Obama got elected by the left wing socialists who coddle to the terrorists and actually agree with them that America is to blame.
We shall see if Obama can keep us safe like Bush.

    • McHope

      Exactly!

    • benny

Seattle, it will end up in disaster. If Obama shuts his mouth and behaves like Carter, the world will just ignore him. And believe me, he will no longer be respected in the international arena.

      • Mert

Nobody respects Obama in the international arena!!!

    • Ks Girl

We shall see if Obama can keep us safe like Bush.

Very doubtful as I see it!!!!!!

Obama said what he had to say to get elected. I’m sure his thoughts are very much the same as Chopra’s. Before long, we won’t be able to call them terrorists, more likely, we’ll call them our neighbors…

      • Seattle Moss

This is the really big problem we have..

        Its called PERCEPTION!!

When somebody perceives you as being weak then they will push the envelope until they break you.

What is not revealed and soon will be is the extent to which Bush has kept us safe. You can’t quantify preventing attacks.
You sure can quantify getting attacked.

Soon all those that voted for Obama will wish that they were not part of what will be known as
        National Suicide!

9/11 happened under GWB’s watch! Let’s not make him out to be our patron saint.

Yes 911 happened under Bush 9 months after being elected..
Have you noticed lately how the pirates are taking over ships with oil?
I know you’re caught up on the Iraq war and the people that died. So was I until I realized that by strategically positioning ourselves there we may have prevented the rise of Resource Wars which could cause millions of deaths.
You can prevent something and never get credit for it. Or wait for it to happen and then get blamed.

Iraq is a Brilliant Strategy for protecting us the rest of our lives.

        • Five Thirty

Iraq is a Brilliant Strategy for protecting us the rest of our lives.

There have been too many American casualties to consider it protection.

          • Seattle Moss

Would WW3 and possibly 100 million dead be more satisfying to you

        • gregoryp

I don’t know about brilliant but there are some compelling arguments for why we need to keep our troops firmly occupying Iraqi soil. With Russia making a comeback, radical Islam gaining traction and consumption around the world at all time highs we face some very unstable and unsettling times. You are very right that resource wars could take an extreme toll; however, it is also very easy to argue that we could have put all those trillions to good use right here at home including improving mass transit systems, putting solar panels on all of our homes and building solar energy plants, solar/electric cars, and so much more. Heck, by spending so much money on our infrastructure we might actually get a solar cell with an efficiency of around 50% which would make oil obsolete.

          • Seattle Moss

            Greg,
As a person who was originally against the war I can appreciate your point of view. However, I do believe that the fellows at the American enterprise institute took advantage of a diminished Russia and proceeded to make Iraq part of the American sphere of influence.
            has it been messy…You Bet!

Has it been worthwhile..Time will only tell!

      • KintheNorthwest

Sad to say but it was because of many signs ignored from Bill Clintons watch. Also it was due to a military downgrade under Clintons watch.

You wrote that Bush “kept us safe.” I’m saying that you wrong, in fact that the statement is absurd, in fact that to anyone whose loved ones were impacted by 9/11, Katrina or the Iraq War, your statement is deeply offensive. Armchair quarterbacking has nothing to do with it.

        • Seattle Moss

We know that you’re not connected in any way to the military..Don’t we?
In fact you know nothing of the world.Especially geography or the projection of American power

    • Seattle Moss

      “Bush kept us safe?”
We have not been attacked since 911. If we get attacked again I will blame those that voted for National defeat

      “The Bush team missed 9/11″,
      So did Clinton

      “ignored Hurricane Katrina”,
Bush should know how to control nature

“damaged our military by botching Iraq”,
Surge is working. Saddam is gone. Iraq will be a pro western democracy. Iran is surrounded on two sides. Western civilization continues to get vital resources. Terrorists denied infrastructure and petrol dollars. Now forced to use desperate pirate measures to get money

“endangered us by failing to defeat Al Qaeda and”
Alqueada is in 60 countries around the world.

      “letting Afghanistan slide into anarchy…”
Afganistan has always been in anarchy. The bad lands that no other country wants.

      • sfhillary

With all due respect, you’re so incredibly wrong.

If we get attacked again, it will be in large part because Bush allowed Al Qaeda to reconstitute unmolested for seven years after 9/11.

As for Katrina: if you believe Bush handled that hurricane well, you are pretty much the only American who thinks that way. Oh well, I guess 20% of Americans still think Bush is doing a good job. Congratulations on being one of them.

Iraq will be a pro-western democracy, huh? Dream on. We destroyed that country. The surge is only one of many factors that lowered violence; it takes a bumper-sticker mentality to think it was the dominant one.

If you do not believe that we could have really damaged or destroyed Al Qaeda’s leadership in one place — the wilderness on the Afghan/Pakistani border — then you do not know very much about the war on terror, period.

And that’s just foreign policy. “Protecting us” also has to do with economic and social policy, and let’s not even discuss that.

Bush is a fool. Worst president in American history. “He kept us safe.” What a laugh. What a tragic joke.

        • Seattle Moss

“With all due respect, you’re so incredibly wrong. If we get attacked again, it will be in large part because Bush allowed Al Qaeda to reconstitute unmolested for seven years after 9/11.”
The terrorists got a big surprise didn’t they. Bush has used tactics that show that America means business against these fanatics. Maybe thats’ why we have not gotten attacked since.
But now it’s about perception..Obama won on weakness and justice and talking to our enemies. The terrorists are laughing as we capitulate our position.

“As for Katrina: if you believe Bush handled that hurricane well, you are pretty much the only American who thinks that way. Oh well, I guess 20% of Americans still think Bush is doing a good job. Congratulations on being one of them.”
Katrina was bigger than anything since Galveston or Camille and was a direct hit on New Orleans. Our defenses were focused on anti-terrorism so America was caught off guard on natural diasters. Since those mistakes FEMA has done a great job. Sometimes you have to learn from events like 911 and Katrina.

“Iraq will be a pro-western democracy, huh? Dream on. We destroyed that country. The surge is only one of many factors that lowered violence; it takes a bumper-sticker mentality to think it was the dominant one.”
I’m bullish on Iraq..In fact I’m investing in Iraq big time!…

“If you do not believe that we could have really damaged or destroyed Al Qaeda’s leadership in one place — the wilderness on the Afghan/Pakistani border — then you do not know very much about the war on terror, period.”
You’re pretty dumb as I have said on geography. Have you ever looked at a map. Do understand what type of mountains exist in that area. Do you understand why we needed to work with Musharref in country that is almost a terrorist state with nukes..More arm chair quarter backing.

“And that’s just foreign policy. “Protecting us” also has to do with economic and social policy, and let’s not even discuss that.”
Lets not talk about how the democrats Franks,Waters and Dodd destroyed our economy with the sub prime mess..

Bush is a fool. Worst president in American history. “He kept us safe.” What a laugh. What a tragic joke.

How tragic for you…Truman was just as unpopular during his time. You can’t see the forest for the trees..Most sheep can’t see over the rear ends of other sheep.

Clinton was out of office on Sept ll, 2001. He took terrorist expert Richard Clark seriously throughout his administration; GWB et al did not.

        • Seattle Moss

So why didn’t Richard Clark tell the President that four planes would be hijacked on the day of Sept 11th with the airlines and airports and the precise departures.

          Hindsight is always 20/20

          • Strawberrybitch

They did Seattle. Google up that cow Rice and the infamous Bin Laden determined to attack INSIDE the US memo video. They knew. They just chose to ignore anything Clinton. And I loathe Bush. Many military folks do. Don’t even mention Bush around my husband. He’s one of the main reason’s we chose to get out.

            • Seattle Moss

The threats were real but still how were we to prevent them. Shut down airspace. Maybe frisk everyone and have long lines.
I’m sure the arm chair quarter backs would be the first to complain about the adverse effect to the economy. They would also say the threat was overblown.
If there had been no attacks I’m sure they would say there never was a real threat.
              20/20

              • Strawberrybitch

Not after the first Tower bombings and the Oklahoma bombings…you know the one that Bill Clinton and his FBI guys solved. They caught both Tim McVeigh and the Blind Shiek. Both tried and convicted. Where’s Bin Laden? And I’m sure if you asked the loved ones of all the dead from 911 if they should have shut down travel for a few days or go on extreme alert to avoid what happened, they would have agreed. I know I would have.

                • Seattle Moss

I think Bin Laden is probably dead.
A short time after 911 Bin Laden said to his followers that he would be gone in two years. The guy is 6’6″ tall and on kidney dialysis.. Sure not in some cave somewhere.

As for Tim McVeigh..He was caught by Oklahoma patrol agents 30 minutes after the attack because he was driving without plates.

          • TeakWoodKite

Seattle Moss, I was wondering if you had read Richard Clarke’s, “Against All Enemies”…

            (p351-2;

“At the beginning of the Bush 43 administration, thought was given to demoting the National Security Adviser by having Vice President Cheney chair the key operating group, the cabinet Principles committee. What happened instead was that the Vice President attended the principles meeting, out ranking the NSC adviser, who nominally chaired the meetings. With the Vice President’s support the Secretary of Defense instructed the Pentagon staff to ignore any attempt at oversight by the NSC staff. The inter-agency control system broke down.

Another cause of the weakened NSC system was the limited scope of interest of the National Security Adviser. During the transition period in January 2001, Dr. Rice expressed surprise to me that my office was involved in so many things that were not “foreign policy”.

…When in October 2001, there was an outbreak of Anthrax attacks, Dr. Rice told the White House Chief of Staff, in my presence, ” I didn’t take this job to work on things like that”.

            .

…I would only say we do NOT need folks like this ruinning the show.

It is also well documented that during the transition from Clinton to Bush 43, Clarke was indeed, “running around with his hair on fire”. It does not mean anyone listened. It is also documented that Richard Clarke and the shop he ran, were “demoted” below the principles group level.

When Bush got that Aug 6, PDB, it had been seven whole months of filtered communications via DOD or dis-interested NSC advisor… I wonder if he, Bush, even read the PDB.

How you had a nice turkey day.

Sometimes I write long-winded and digressive e-mail replies to people who send me links and tips. My mind wanders a lot as i write like this — it’s very different than trying to write a focused article on one topic — and i rather enjoy the freedom to let my mind wander. Anyway, this is what i wrote (typos and all):

Thank you, John. Chopra’s not a terrorism or c-terr expert, but he’s a very bright, highly observant man — who, to be truthful, usually makes me switch channels — but this is quite good. Larry could add his EXPERT touch to these questions.

But i suppose it’s naive to presume we could ask the Saudis what they do with the proceeds of their sales of oil.

    – couple random thoughts i had as i read it — i vividly recall that Hindu/Muslim carnage — it was so vicious and cruel

I trust we can find courageous “moderate” Muslims with whom we (the nation) can work effectively.

An old West Wing episode touched on this – that it is to Iran and Syria’s great benefit that any peace accords (Israel/Palestine) FAIL because it keeps their own people riled up and under control. It was said during a later episode following Pres Bartlet’s extraordinary but failed attempt to bring resolution at Camp David, and then the assassination of the Palestinian leader who’d come to Camp David. (It was heartbreaking because that Camp David episode was so riveting and rich that I watched it three times — and want to watch it some more.)

Do the Saudis et al. also wish to use Israel/Palestine to keep their own people beefing about something beyond their borders and thus controlled?

Will Obama’s idealistic efforts towards “peace” unleash monstrous terrorist attacks around the world? It would seem that that would be their logical reaction because, as Chopra says, the terrorists have no meaning without exploiting these problems to recruit people.

So very many people are increasingly believing that the extremists will destroy BO, and while I’m no fan, I have enough regard for him, and wish him to succeed so badly (solely for the sake of our nation and its future), that it would be devastating for me and for the nation. I’ve heard hints on TV that there’s a near army of agents around him. God I hope so.

I was in high school when Kennedy was assassinated, and the principal came into each room to inform us. We were stunned. The only Democrat I knew in the entire high school sat right in front of me, and she turned around and gave me the dirtiest look because I’d been outspoken in my support for Nixon — I’d read his “six crises” book and was very impressed by him. But, god, I was just as upset as she, and we ALL were. Even my parents — even relatives who’d feared he’d be ruled by the Pope — …

It is SO GOOD that Hillary will be SoS. She is the realist with idealistic aspirations. She will help him see how — for now — baby steps will be the smart thing to do. No grand makeovers for Israel/Palestine, etc., etc …. just slow progress. Otherwise, terror will rain down on him and every country in the world like we’ve never seen before.

I’m blabbering now. … hugs, and HT!

    • benny

NQ, the fact is that obama wants peace all over. and belive me, I have lived in the middle-east. They know that we support Israel, and they are s**t-scared of us. Thats why there is not much upheaval on that side of the world. But If the arabs come to know that obama sympatises with them, it’ll be a nuclear holocaust. Have no doubts bout it.

You’ll find it funny, but in India, GWB is very popular. He brought the two countries very close together, especially when the Indo-U.S nuclear deal went through. Obama is looked at with suspicion. And if there is a problem with pakistan, India will go out.

India trusts GWB, but not obama. Funny, but true

Obama made comments during the campaign that were sympathetic to Muslims and Pakistanis in the context of Kashmir (just like his pro-PLO pronouncements). India does not want outside interference in resolving Kashmir issue and will resent lectures from Obama in that regard.

    • susaninbosque

I have never ever noticed you blabbering… ever. I respond to O just about like you do however, I have read every book Chopra has written and he is not an intelligence intellectual but he has a deep – very deep – understanding of that part of the world (even though he was raised by very very British Indian parents – his father, I believe, was the specific personal physician to the Brit Royal family while in India and it is well worth contemplating his perspective. BTW, he writes far far better than he speaks. Period. It’s an odd but very real variance in more than one human being.

Be well and please continue “blabbering.” I also remember the day I sat in HS and heard the news of JFK. And am also glad that O seems to recognize that he absolutely needs the Clintons on the world stage. There is hope, perhaps.

Actually, I would have watched Rosie before turning on BW and the (I can barely say this) the first family elect …. as it is, I am now permanently on HGTV.

        • bert

beebop, there is more variety than that on TV. Try USA, tru, Discovery Investigations (DI), National Geographic, History, History International, Food Network, AMC, TCM,and Animal Planet. I read this and a few other blogs, plus the occasional Brit Hume for news. I am better informed than I have ever been.

What is happening in India looks like a very well planned, sophisticated operation. It even looks like the perpetrators may have holed up in those places for months scouting their surroundings (according to an Indian minister.) Where is the money coming from?

    • Seattle Moss

No doubt Petrol Dollars.. and I speculate ransom money from the over 90 pirated ships in the past year.

    • http://ezinearticles.com/?Three-Basic-Parenting-Styles&id=744499 Northwest rain

Yes that is the question — it takes money to fuel any sort of terrorist attack. We know that Saudi money has been used to indoctrinate children in many Islamic countries.

As for GWB keeping the US “safe” — I’ll wait for the evidence from non partisan experts in the field. GWB was warned repeatedly that the US would be attacked and he chose to ignore the warnings. Once the predicted attack happened — he went overboard in his reaction. There is some solid arguments that GWB has in fact made America less safe by attacking Iraq and creating a new haven FOR terrorists in Iraq. By attacking a country that had NO involvement in 9/11, no at the time had NO Al Quida — (remember Hussien & Osama bin Lauden hated each other) — GWB succeeded in creating a whole lot of new potential terrorists out of people who had nothing to lose and scores to settle.

One of the points a political science Prof of mine pointed out about Middle Eastern politics — the people that make up the cultures of that region have a VERY long memory. They are still fighting blood feuds that are generations old. Meanwhile the western culture can’t remember events that happened more than a few months or a few years.

What I do know is that Obama is a naive bimbo who has already caused riots and death in two countries because he opened his mouth and spewed out words without considering the consequences. (Pakistan — riots because he said the US should invade their country. And then Kenya when 0-zero supported his murderous “cousin”.) If Obama appears weak or appears to the radicals that he will side with the Muslims (as he stated in one of his books) then they may in their warped minds somehow believe that they have his support.

One of the major problems is that the world has too many people which means there is a huge population of disposable individuals who are already enraged because they don’t see a future — so they can easily be conned into believing in rewards in an after life. And this also related to the worth of the female life. In China the female child has long been considered disposable or worthless. To control the population the female child is discarded. Women are devalued — considered less than human and are stripped of human rights in many backward cultures (including America).

This is a global issue — controlling the birth rate doesn’t mean slaughter of female babies — it means EDUCATION for females — Educated females reduce the number of children. I doubt that most leaders can see far enough into the future to make the necessary adjustments required TODAY.

These terrorist were produced by women who are held in bondage by a culture that has little regard for their women. There is little regard for life — because life is cheap and people can be conned again and again with the “rewards in the after life” — BS. (The ultimate pay offs of benefits or wages.)

Deepak Chopra is correct — It’s a global problem, and we need a global solution, and we need the help of all the Muslims, 25 percent of the world’s population, to help us uproot this problem.

Thank you. NW Rain. Another great comment.

    • stodgie

it doesn’t take a lot of money for an operation like this. and these young toughs live cheap. 9/11 was an operation that was relatively cheap when you look at the cost of iraq.

      • Seattle Moss

Thecost of Iraq is very expensive.
However what id=s the benefit of 100 years of American sphere of influence of a country.
Look at Germany, South Korea, Western Europe and Japan. All American sphere of influence
Now add these..Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,UAE,Bahrain,Qater, Israel and Iraq.

Seems we’re doing pretty good after all!

i just lived through hurricane ike. it was tough of course, very hard on the coast. my family has a beach home right on bolivar penninsula where the worst impact was felt. it was built in 2008 21 feet in the air to florida storm standards. even the steps were still there. the perception is that all was lost. there nothing but death and chaos. the media is a bunch of carnival barkers trying to scare us into contining to buy their products.

so yes we are doing better than the media would have us believe. they get viewers by keeping everyone scared.

          • Seattle Moss

My Mom’s house is down at Jamaica Beach in Galveston. She also has a house up by Champions in Houston. When IKE came in my Mom’s house was third from the beach. Now it has the best view and first on the beach with some room to spare.

Life is a crap shot..I live in earthquake zone..Knock on wood!!

            • stodgie

yup, we have a very good view these day though we were on the fifth row back. i like jamaica beach. the good thing is they are bringing in more sand and nature has started rebuilding the beaches. the state of texas will do nothing for a year as it gives nature a chance to rebuild.

              • Seattle Moss

I like those little crabs that hide in the in the sand.

      • pm317

It is close to $500, $600 a night in those hotels and if they set up some kind of control room in the hotel like the Indian minister was talking about, some of these guys stayed there. It is a lot of money for some of these guys. Who is funding them?

One more thing before I leave to go eat Thanksgiving Dinner. Has anyone noticed what Russia is doing in the back ground? Iran, Venezuela and Cuba…. Looks like positioning to me…

Funny, last time I checked Bush is still the president.

NPR had a great story about neither Bush or Obama being able to govern right now. And wasn’t Bush just in South America…wonder if his new ranch has brush to clear?

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and prayers to those around the world suffering from extremists who do not value life!

  • Galt’s Pizza Parlor

Ruh roh! The Globe supermarket tabloid has a nice holiday present for the new Plasticine-(s)elect. I have no idea if anything the tabloid says about this story is true, but I am waiting for this headline: Obama is a Martian, secret photos of him having his antennae adjusted revealed! Seriously though, sometimes the tabloids are right and report things way before the MSM. Well anyway I thought this offbeat comment was in order especially if anyone is intoxicated. Just don’t drive drunk please.

Some personal thoughts more towards the philosophical as I am certainly no expert on counterterrorism: Somewhere in between the hawks and the doves we will find a solution to conflict if we seek it. I see the need for defense and even offensive action on occasion, but we are missing a solution somewhere here. Its something I like to think about. Another that I like to think about is at one time the founders of Israel were considered terrorists. These terrorists transitioned into a country. Mind you I am not trying to justify violence. The conflict in Northern Ireland is another example.

I wish there was a way those in the India-Pakistan conflict would resolve their differences peacefully. And if India is attacked, they have the right to defend themselves. But where does this stop? Attack, counter attack, counter counter attack, ad infinitum. I have no answers for humanity other than discussion that seeks a new direction and ideas to implement them is in tall order. If you think about it, the hawks and doves have had their chance. I think it is time for a new direction. I think Hillary and McCain understand this and would like to move us in this third direction.

Let’s all just love each other and let these religious martyr’s blow us all up.

yup the nation of islam is back in the closet. the leader can put his cute little getup back in the cedar chest. we aren’t interested. the local thugs in these countries will all try and see how tough they can protray themselves. the indian military will soon step up operations and go in for the kill. they won’t allow a long term siege. russia didn’t either. look these things happen. they always will sad to say. for the media and some to go off the deep end tells me they must be bored or easily alarmed. the meida just wants another fire, another attack, another nightmare to shove at us and try to sell sell sell. i feel deep sympathy for india and the people who have suffered from these thugs’ unacceptable attacks.

  • I’m a Linda too

It sure ain’t Obama answering that 3AM phone call. It’s Obama flying that airplane to go play air guitar and give a speech to the masses.

    • Ferd Berfle

      It’s Obama flying that airplane

      Yeah, the Luftwaffle Express.

  • http://Godhelpusall lee M

Larry, since this is an open thread, would you please let me know how you feel about Bush pardoning all those criminals and drug pushers but letting the two border patrol agents rot in jail? Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were just doing their job trying to protect our borders from scum and they are in jail and the scum is free.

IMO the prosecutor who put them there is the one who should be put in jail.

How do we expect honest men and women to join our law enforcement units if we let things like this happen? The prosecutor was trying to make a name for himself (IMO) possibly planning to run for higher office all at the expense of two decent family men just serving their country.

I would like to see bloggers take up this cause and demand that President Bush do the right thing. We take up petitions for everything else. Wouldn’t the rights of these two officers be as important as that of the wolves or the polar bears?

    • hootnannie

Lee M, my husband tells me that W is a friend of the prosecutor. I guess no more need be said when it comes to Shrub.

Merriam-Webster Places Dick Morris’ Picture Next To Word “Pathetic”

    opednews.com/articles/Merriam-Webster-Places-Dic-by-steve-young-081128-565.html

OT, but I just can imagine S. Hannity asking D. Morris about India’s bombing, and would not
be surprised if he blames the Clintons for it, for not stopping some kind of policy’ in the 1990′s or whatever ”pathetic excuse”? The man is so fast to relate Hillary or Bill to anything that goes wrong, well…since he hates them…and his political forecast is not so very much reliable I agree with MW’s editors. I would call him ‘worst’ but let leave it there.

Merriam-Webster Places Dick Morris’ Picture Next To Word “Pathetic”

    by steve young

pa·thet·ic [puh-thet-ik] 1. causing or evoking pity, sympathetic sadness, sorrow, etc.; pitiful; pitiable: a pathetic letter; a pathetic sight. affecting or moving the feelings.3.pertaining to or caused by the feelings.4.miserably or contemptibly inadequate: In return for our investment we get a pathetic three percent interest. 5. Dick Morris

In what Merriam-Webster editors are attributing to the voluminous usage, or citations, the forthcoming 2009 edition of the world-famous dictionary has added political pundit Dick Morris’s picture and name as one of the possible definitions for the word “pathetic.”

“We had seriously thought that we’d be adding it to the definition of “fallacious” or “wrong” as in the sentence, ‘Dick Morris is always wrong,’” said Webster’s VP, Noah Meriam-Webster, ” but one of our editors found an instance where he was right, though it was in actuality him just agreeing to something Sean Hannity said. He came close to being pictured next to “self-promotion” but then we’d have to pull out Bill O’Reilly’s picture. As far as being pathetic, Morris has found it’s way into common usage.”

Morris has spent the part two years, mostly appearing on Fox News to push his books and websites with predictions and other speculation that has been painfully inept. Pathetic, really. From predicting that Hillary Clinton would face a “nightmare” in her 2006 senate race against Republican Jeanine Pirro to theorizing Clinton would face Condoleezza Rice for the presidency in 2008. Morris saved his best for forecasting President Bush’s handling of Katrina. “Responding to disasters is a source of presidential strength and popularity, and Bush is about to show how it is done.”
