When EMS arrives, they use a bag valve mask. The thing with the AED is that even when you don't get a pulse, you still have some electical activity in the heart for a while. You might have V tach happening, and that can sometimes be shocked into a rhythm that pumps. So, attach the thingeys as soon as you can, it will tell you if you should shock, and when to resume compressions.
