By SusanUnPC … I’d like you to review the following regarding a supposed “Deepthroat,” someone high up in the administration who wants to expose NSA/NSC intel gathering on Americans and the Total Information Awareness program. Deepthroat apparently posted several comments at Josh Marshall’s TPM Muckrakers (those comments are repeated here). I’d appreciate your explaining this to us in layman’s terms, i.e. very basic terms for those of us not intimately familiar with government-ese.     Oh Susan, I have spent the greater part of the evening reading all these diaries and the links given in them. My God! It is legit! You have to remember my memory is like what you said early on…;o) I remember a lot of this stuff happening. I happen to think that if they do get rid of gonz. the firewall will be down…The letter given by McConnel to Leahy and Specter was just what it took to confirm this whole thing….I happen to be among the belivers of this whole thing.

    this is why I think we have to get rid of gonz. he is the nut that needs to be cracked and disposed of for good…just think of all the rotten stuff this adm has done and tried to cover-up! It is probably the worst in our history..

    This is what Muller and Comey and others were going to resign over…Just this very thing…never forget this! They do have some sort of integrity. There is just some things that some ppl will not do…why? it is called the constitution

    The DKos diaries are hard to follow as you have said. One has to really be on top of this and really read to understand what is being said by the person who ever he/she is. I am gonna be very interested in what Larry has to say about this.

    The only part is I do not understand about IP and the Internet stuff. Just always remember that this crowd is using other sites to email than the WH email service…I think Congress has already ran across such stuff. I think or hope they have and understand what is going on here…More so about the cover-up than the actual crime committed even tho both are wrong!

    A little on IP’s

    Every poster and visitor on a website leaves behind their unique internet address (IP).

    A site’s administrator can look up those anonymous postings and determine which ones came from the same computer or computer network.

    TPM’s administrator could announce which postings came from the supposed “Deep Throat” and which ones came from other anonymous posters.

    The supposed Deep Throat may have taken steps to hide the source in many ways. He(She) could have used a community server like an internet cafe or a library where they could log on without giving their real name or even having to enter the establishment by using a wireless connection and a stolen falsified or “Hacked Connection.”

    He(She) also may have used a computer, cell phone, or Blackberry with falsified credentials, and then disposed of the evidence in order to prevent any evidence of their true identity from being obtained.

    Specific steps must be taken in order to remain anonymous in todays environment, but with some creative effort, it is possible.

    Just scanning through a couple of the anonymous comments, my first reaction was: Oh, anon sounds like a conspiracy person. Not to discount Bush’s domestic spy programs, which are probably a lot worse than we know…but anon sounds like a conspiracy person.

    Maybe it’s statements like this: “Review the DHS domestic interrogation facilities. Look at the gas mileage for the DHS pick up teams. Review the files they’ve had access to; and the basis for detaining someone. Review the complaints of citizens being forcibly removed from their cars, engines running, or being taken from their homes while school children are present in the early morning. Evidence includes car impound fees.

    He (assume he based on voice and language) seems to be making four sets of allegations based on reading many of his posts – i’ll be as concise as I can be:

    (1) Domestic intelligence information was redirected to political operators in the WH and GOP for political dirty tricks.

    (2) Incriminating docs were destroyed by WH, DOJ and others w/r/t illegal activities by this administration. They relate to exec branch actions before and after 9-11, before and after TSP was publicized, and before and after secret prisons were revealed. Anonymous believes that in some instances these actions might amount to war crimes. Anonymous believes that the docs were destroyed once WH realized potential leaks/liability.

    (3) However, there are third party copies of incriminating documents, including those that were destroyed, that can be found and/or subpoenaed from the right sources. Executive privilege won’t work because non-governmental third parties have these documents.

    (4) IPs, email headers, referrer logs, metadata, etc. from material released to date and the 3p copies floating out there that can show the “networks” of government and non-gov individuals, corps, lawyers, and law firms involved.

    At this point I don’t think its accurate to label him an “insider deep throat” or a “crackpot.” I know he’s got some things wrong – at one post probably from the same person – at CREW – he puts Turley at Georgetown when he’s at GW, see this link… but that could be an honest mistake (it suggests he’s not from DC. On the other hand, some of what he is saying is well researched and makes sense technically (as well as explaining bizarre behavior by the WH, DoD and DoJ as well as bizarre actions by some implicated corps/persons.

    Just my 2 cents.

      I think you’ve just about hit the nail on the head, and thank you for drawing all this together succinctly–after reading the posts I was scratching my head.

      From what I can gather, I agree that from language use it does seem to be a man. I have to respectfully disagree that he is a casual googler however. It would appear that he is able to show where to look far too easily; note his breezy use of government agency acronyms–NSA vs NSC, JTTF, Operation FALCON, CIFA, DSS, etc. etc.

      This implies that the subject matter is–or was–his bread and butter, and for those posting here who work or worked in the government, let’s just put this on the table: Ordinary citizens just simply don’t talk like this. They just don’t. So what does this mean? He is in government in some capacity, or was in government. It also implies that he is not in a position of responsibility where he can whisper into a congressional investigator’s ear, or provide evidence. It’s just that using his professional knowledge of government–by the fashion in which he berates lawyers, he may actually be one–to put all the evidence together.

      Another thing I take issue with is the suggestion that his interest in DHS mileage and vehicle impoundment records coronates him with a tin foil crown. Although I think these seem like unproductive avenues for investigation, consider this: IF you take as given that the administration has either been conducting illegal intelligence gathering activities –or– that they have at least been skirting the law by subcontracting these activities to corporations, perhaps even foreign concerns, THEN how would their acting on the information manifest itself? It doesn’t seem like they would go through all this trouble just to sit on the information; they’re action-oriented. Explanation #1–funneling internal DNC and Kerry Campaign emails and phone calls to the RNC–seems the most logical manifestation of using ill-gotten information. Another explanation may be that they were using ill-gotten information to secure FISA warrants, so as to sever the connection between the poisoned tree and its evidentiary poisoned fruit. In other words, they needed a way to enter admissible evidence in the event of finding a bad guy, even if their first indications of criminal activities were gathered illegally.

      Furthermore, there was a time when talk about CIA gulags, prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, unwarranted wiretaps, yellowcake uranium, and the Downing Street Memo would have elicited incredulity and accusations that proponents were “conspiracy theorists.”

      At any rate, he does seem to have fashioned a credible larger picture from all the various tesserae, as well as an ingenious bit of comarative analysis to demonstrate who knew what and when. I’d give him a pass on some of the unusual musings. (I hope you fellow posters will give me at least some indulgence for my musings here!)

      I guess the real question is, what is he missing? And, how do we persuade congressional investigators, States Attorneys General, or US Attorneys to start investigating this and bringing it to light?

    i tried to read thru the stuff… i can’t figure it out so i’m counting on some really good “figure-outers” to make some sense of it for people like me.

    when i first started reading thru it, i was reminded of the movie,

    The first line of evidence is in the Congressional correspond logs. These are the notification dates to Congress on FISA violations, illegal activity, prisoner abuse, and other things.

    The second lines of evidence is the IG memoranda they get from the ranking Members related to problems.

    The third line of evidence is the audit engagement and workflow.

    The fourth line of evidence is the audit report of compliance related to that audit engagement.

    The fifth line of evidence is the safeguarded information which the President, Congress, and legal counsel have been exposed to and either: Ignored, reacted to, panicked, or did what they were supposed to do.

    This information relates to the safeguarded information provided to outside personnel at the EU; and has been transmitted by the CIA to foreign entities.

    C’est ridicule,

    do not try to discourage whistleblowers by getting a little too close to origin.

    Most of this info was public and culled from search engines.

    Someone with perhaps some experience in the IT field appears to be the most likely source.

    Broad portions of it match word for excerpts of a PBS interview.

    Someone may have embellished with information from their work, or it could be the same person.

    As for the eharings, was Cindy Sheehan was in jail and unable to attend? Mission Accomplished?

    Rumsfeld has lied and will play the security card. I’d recommend asset forfeiture, since he is a subcontractor and had to divest roughly a billion in shared interests to resume DoD work.

    Also, Sen. Frist ran a day trader’s network fromt he Senate office when he was Majority Leader. I’d suggest a closer look at thosae items, especially conversations with the White House/OVP from his office.

    Had Wilson found their claims to be true he would have been celebrated. Why no relief that he essentially found no basis to fight the wrong war at the wrong place and time?

    That should constitute intent, the fact that his diplomatic effort and its findings were ignored is basis for motivation. Thus Cheney’s extreme prejudice in having Libby out Plame.

    Bob Parry’s got a really important article up re the overall goals of the Bush plan of which the NSA spying is only one of the smaller pieces. I know most of us know this, but this is the first really cohesive presentation I’ve seen putting this all together:

    The periodic report of large institutions “losing” personal data, some reported “stolen”, some lost, seems to be a part of this. I recall data losses at the VA, several health insurers, employee retirement funds (Calif?), etc… The data is apparently never used by thieves, no one is ever caught, and we hear nothing but the initial report.

    It would seem that to run a TIA program there would have to be an ENORMOUS memory capacity, which would cost billions and provide a foot print, both physically and in the budget.
