The Irreverent Side of Christmas (open thread through tomorrow)

It seems a bit crass to put this below Larry’s nice Christmas greeting to all of you. But the photo below the fold cracked me up. First, here’s an image of the decorations put up by a woman named Sarah Childs in New Orleans, as well as part of a news article about what happened to Ms. Child, reported by the CBS affiliate in Houston, Texas:

NEW ORLEANS, La. (AP) — A Louisiana woman ran afoul of police when she gave her neighbors an unusual holiday greeting, hanging Christmas lights in the shape of a middle finger.

Sarah Childs was in a dispute with some of her neighbors in Denham Springs, just east of Baton Rouge, so she decided to send a message with her decorations. Neighbors complained and police threatened to arrest her, so she and the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana sued the city.

A judge ruled in her favor Thursday.

Below is the photo that cracked me up.

This photo is from Philly.com:

Can you imagine the time wasted by Houston police and the city’s legal teams? I find it unbelievable.

Just so you do NOT get the wrong impression, I am strongly in favor of allowing people to put up Christmas displays, and I side with the ACLU in defending this woman’s right to display the decorations as she wishes.

She’s not screaming “Fire!” in a crowded theater. She is simply exercising her constitutional right to free speech.

I love driving by Christmas decorations. And I am particularly fond of a beautiful statue at a local Catholic church. There is no harm done to anyone that I can think of. Too many people are going overobard with this “politically correct” nonsense. Let people be who they are.

Merry Christmas. and to all, a good night.

    • Deapster

Listened to “progressive” talk radio on a drive trip home from the SF Bay Area – it is amazing how many issues they want the government to keep funding and paying for.

The moderators (Rachel Rose or something) sell is the victim part of the equation with a good dose of shame and class warfare, if the government does not provide the services.

Pay for all these goodies? Just send the bill to the “rich” who should be paying their fair share to pay for their increasing lions share of the public wealth.

In their world there is no end to what the government should provide and no end to the untapped resources from the “rich” to pay for them — the whole bundle is to create armies of victims who will tear this country down.

I don’t understand their motivation since they are all “rich and famous” themselves and you never hear about them handing over any of their money — no, just the unidentified “rich” are supposed to keep growing this expanding dependency class.

Talk about falling off a cliff – we need a new definition which I think is Obama 2012.

The truth is often painful but nonetheless it is important that we live in the real world. Just as little kids have to come to grips with the fact that there is no Santa Claus, it is necessary for millions of liberals, including many who think of themselves as highly knowledgeable about economic matters, to realize that President Clinton’s policies sent the economy seriously off course.

This was the economy that President Clinton handed to President Bush in January of 2001. It was an economy that was being carried by an unsustainable bubble that, in fact, already was in the process of deflating at the time Bush took office.

Even Huffington is going to croak when she gets her new tax bill. As long as taxes let someone else pay, they are okay among the progressive elite, But these new ones are coming down on their heads now too and their kids inheritances are at stake now too.

Don’t forget dear Arianna started out as a conservative and a charge of plagerizing of a biography of Picasso. Also don’t forget how important gay rights are among this crowd.

PBS Susie Orman sold out this country with her endorsement of Obama who was violating every economic principle she endorses, but since he was fostering more rights for gays, this was good enough for Suzie to sell us all out.

No problems with gay rights but not at the expense of the rest of his bankrupt agenda. That is where I part company with this crowd’s comfortable thinking. So I hope these new taxes bite them hard.

        • KenoshaMarge

I had a “good” friend who absolutely loathed Obama but voted for him because Romney would take away her gay rights. After she emailed me that she was voting for him I’ve just ignored her.
She still emails me from time to time and I continue to ignore her. Since she’s a one issue voter, and that isn’t my issue, we have nothing in common.

I hope all the kids that see this don’t take it in as part of Christmas and what it’s meant to mean. But how will they know what Christmas is supposed to mean when most likely Mom is off to the Mall today to return or exchange all the presents someone spent so much time and effort to buy.

Christmas means little to most people anymore except rampant consumerism and tacky cretins like a woman who gives the finger in “Christmas” lights.

GM bailout protected wages, not jobs

The announcement that the federal government would sell 200 million shares of General Motors back to GM for $5.5 billion and then dispose of its remaining 300 million shares by early 2014 makes a vast taxpayer loss close to a certainty. If the remaining shares sell for the same $27.50 as the initial block of 200 million shares – and GM’s many headaches make a big stock surge unlikely – the hit would be $12.5 billion.

    http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/dec/23/gm-bailout-protected-wages-not-jobs/

    • KenoshaMarge

But Harp, we have to “protect” those union jobs. Because union members then pay union dues which in turn are spent to elect union friendly Democrats which in turn protect union jobs. See how nicely that works. For them!

      • elizabethrc

But, but, but, if companies fold or stop hiring or reduce jobs, who will pay the union dues? How can the unions not understand that? I guess goons just don’t have a lot of smarts, if Trumpka is any indicator of how or if they think. Knuckle draggers like him would be very much at home in DC, where self delusion has been raised to a new art form.

No, and neither are most voters.

They don’t know or understand the issues, they believe whatever pap the MSM feeds them and then they bitch and moan about the government they have.

It’s the government they elected and they deserve it. We, those who voted against it, don’t!

Let’s face it my friend, the media now runs the country. And the media is biased and very liberal.

            • Deapster

You know deep down how good it feels to be smug about this, but to really feel good we have to also make a difference.

Which is harder and harder now because while some of us lived in a smug partisan media bubble, the Obama team snuck up on us and walked away with the whole kit and caboodle while we were not even looking; instead being caught up in our selective echo chamber.

        • Deapster

Stop worrying about private sector union jobs, it is the public sector unions that are killing us.

And that means: teachers, fire, police, nurses, government employees. They all now make sure they elected friendly representatives on every single elected board whether national, state or LOCAL.

It all starts with your local school boards but who often bothers to care at that level, but this is where it starts. Any elected public agency that hands out tax dollars is fair game for the unions.

So forget the national issues and start making a difference down at your grass roots. Electing fiscal conservatives at the local level creates tomorrows legislative farm team.

Think globally but now start acting locally – Happy New Year!

          • elizabethrc

Deap: that is a great slogan: Think globally but act locally! It needs to go viral. Maybe people will start to think when it gives a hint of how it hurts all of us in our towns and cities when our ‘leaders’ make arbitrary decisions. It’s our lives that are affected, not theirs.
I agree with you about the government employee unions but I can’t forget the wholesale blackmail practiced by the unions throughout the country.
Doing away with both (or at least scaling back, in the case of the government employee unions) is something I would favor.

            • Deapster

Uhhhh, that slogan “think globally, act locally” came out of the social revolution days of the 1960′s – it is/was standard bumper sticker fare. But happy to reacquaint a new generation.

I think it is already now part of our everyday vocabulary like “if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.”

Occasionally those 60′s pot-head, acid tripping radicals could coin a meaningful phrase…. before twitter.

          • KenoshaMarge

You are so right. Public sector unions have representation on both sides of the table. Not anyone with a brain’s idea of negotiations.

            • Deapster

This is why California dropped off the deep cliff a few years ago – they required all public workers belong to the unions and have those union dues sent directly to the union bosses.

The union bosses then found it was easier to buy enough legislators to make an new and favorable majority vote to get everything they want in Sacramento by regulation than to bargain individually with their local agencies.

Terms limits out here let this happen. Don’t ever think term limits is an answer for stupid voters.

Term limits just ensured we have a permanent supply of really stupid legislators now being dragged around by the nose but the “special interests” who as public employee unions have a special interest in getting every thing they can for themselves and get us to pay for it.

We all watched this train wreck happen bit by bit until California is now past a tipping point. The only hope now are local elections to stop the damage because that is where the little money that is left over still gets spent.

          • foxyladi14

            AMEN

      • Deapster

Yada, yada, yada, unions were wonderful and saved the American worker back in the old sweat shop days. This is the Democrat vote getting line.

But today they moved well past representing the workers against management in contract negotiations.

Voters indeed did put the unions now on BOTH sides of the bargaining table when it comes to government and public jobs. And that is the sorry tale about unions today which are strangling taxes and throwing public service sector into dysfunction.

Getting voters to stop putting union-friendly legislators, city council members, county supervisors, school board members, special district member, judges and sheriffs is Job Number One to save.

California’s Largest Corporation is Headed for the Exit

Chevron is California’s largest corporation, but it seems to be making the move to becoming Texas’ largest corporation instead.

    http://frontpagemag.com/2012/dgreenfield/californias-largest-corporation-is-headed-for-the-exit/

    • Deapster

For about 20 years, Chevron has been threatening this. Calif is not friendly to oil and ever since GOO was formed after the Santa Barbara oil spill, Chevron and the state have had a very uneasy relationship.

I am only surprised it took them this long. This is not news out here. Just that they finally are doing it. Don’t blame them – why when Calif enviros kick them in the teeth, and now will be starting cap and trade Jan 2013.

On my road trip Christmas visit home I got to listen to both conservative talk radio, and the closer I got to the SF Bay Area it switched to liberal talk radio – two absolutely opposite ends of the spectrum, but surprisingly similar in format. (And advertisers)

Conservatives traditional boogey men they to bring out and flog: unions, government, liberals. taxes etc. Worthy conclusions. I tend to agree.

But when you listen to Liberal talk radio and their knee jerk callers, they royally demonize the “rich”, the defense department, corporations in very general terms, and glorify any sort of state dependency programs as the only humane way tax dollars should generated continue to be spent.

Tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich ……. ad nauseum all playing to the victimhood of the “working man”.

They claim there is no fiscal cliff, it is all made up and only talked about of late because the Republicans keep failing to plug the tax loop holes granted bt lobbyists to corporations, while the little people suffer because the little people can’t afford lobyiists to get similar favors..

One sees why Obama won, that is for sure. There are more “little people” than there are rich people or corporations or even those who still believe in personal freedom, personal responsibility for their own consequences and personal initiative that is not equal.

2012 Romney campaign said it best — we want equal opportunities, but after that there is no guarantee of equal outcomes.

Liberal want unequal opportunities for themselves, but then they also want equal outcomes which means we have to pay for what they fail to produce.

This makes perfect sense to the callers and spokespeople on liberal talk radio – very, very pro union. Unions to them are also the “little people” and not in fact a corporation themselves, and a wealthy one at that.

Conservative radio had the best line when he said let’s substitute “successful” for “rich” when the liberals throw “rich” around constantly as their pejorative whipping boy. Let’s start trashing successful people and see how that sounds to the American Dream – what ever tatters of it still exist.

      • Deapster

Bottomline: there is free money out there that is not getting picked up and given to the little people.

And that free money is all in the hands of greedy corporations, who are inherently evil and have no humane purpose to even exist.

Corporations only exist to take money from the little people and give it to someone else – they are vague about this. I guess they give it to greedy fat cats.

End of discussion on Liberal Talk Radio

        • KenoshaMarge

Rinse, lather and repeat. Endlessly. Then express fauxrage when corporations move out of your state.

          • Deapster

California in 2013 with “cap and trade” and the entrenched tax the rich mentality is sending a lot of business out of this state.

Prop 98 guarantees 50% of all state revenues to go to schools. If revenues go down, guess who is the first to get cut. Let the teachers unions who have destroyed this state figure how to deal with that one.

Again, LOCALLY voters in California are now asking to tax themselves with local parcel taxes to make up the difference ….only because most rent, seniors can vote for the tax, but opt out of paying the tax ….. and voters still assume “someone else” (the rich) will be picking up the tab, not them.

BTW these voters are all products of Calif public education. From the CSU trained teachers down to the teacher union cells machines, we used to call classrooms.

            • KenoshaMarge

When classrooms are filled with union teachers who only “teach” what to think and not how to think you get your average voter. Indoctrinated and not even able to “think” enough to realize it.

How do you “deprogram” a whole generation?

      • elizabethrc

Deapster, you made a statement which bears repeating when you spoke of liberals glorifying state dependency programs as the only humane way tax dollars should be spent. You used the word generated and I started to think that one of the unique things about America is that our tax money has worked for us (not so much lately). These ‘dependency’ programs generate nothing, nor do the majority of those on these programs contribute a thing to the economy. They add to our debt.

        • HARP2

I swear these loons have this impression of “the rich.”

          • Deapster

You got that exactly – Richie Rich.

Except it does not include the liberal elite, entertainment and sports moguls, George Soros, or the tech elites. It just covers white Republican elite.

And most progressives are waiting around doing nothing with their lives except waiting for their parent’s inheritance who were part of the Frugal Generation.

A million dollars earning 4% generates $40,000 which is a typical teachers pension.

So teachers and other public workers retire living like “millionaires” on their defined-benefit pensions, but they are also 100% exempt from being included in the “rich” — they just get to act like them.

            On our tax dollars.

Again, someone else (part of the younger Rep farm club) said it better when he asks before he votes on government programs:

“Does this increase government dependency, or does it facilitate getting off government dependency.”

          • KenoshaMarge

Good question. And a question you should ask yourself about anyone before you consider voting for them. “Will they vote for or against anything that increases government dependancy?”
We cannot trust someone to be fiscally responsible simply because they have an “R” after their name. The Bush Administration proved that.

Governor Perry certainly did himself no favors with his poor performance during the primaries, but man, he sure knows how to stick to his guns. I’m beginning to think that his kind of common sense approach, his plentitude of backbone in how he runs Texas is maybe catching hold, at least it would seem so with the number of corporations moving to his state.
Or maybe it’s just that these corporations are just a case of reality meeting the road.

    • KenoshaMarge

You treat people and corporations like shit, trash them in the media every chance you get and then wonder why they don’t want to live in your neighborhood. Chevron was stupid for staying this long.

Did they think that California, so true-BLUE would ever treat them with any dignity or respect. If they did they are as stupid as the state they’re no leaving.
