Chris Kyle, a former U.S. Navy SEAL credited with the largest number of confirmed kills, was one of two people fatally shot at a North Texas shooting range Saturday, Texas Highway Patrol confirmed to Fox News.

Eddie Ray Routh of Lancaster was arraigned early Sunday on two counts of capital murder in the deaths of Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, at the shooting range about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.CAPTION:  According to Fox News via Memeorandum.

“Apparently Mr. Kyle works with people that are suffering from some issues that have been in the military and this shooter is possibly one of those people, that he had taken out to the range to mentor, to visit with, to help him, you know, that’s all I can tell you,” Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant.

“Kind of have an idea that maybe that’s why they were at the range, for some type of therapy that Mr. Kyle assists people with, and I don’t know if it’s called shooting therapy,” Bryant said. “I don’t have any idea but that’s what little bit of information that we can gather so far.”

Witnesses told police that Routh left the shooting scene in Kyle’s pickup truck. He drove to his sister’s home in Midlothian and when he allegedly told her and her husband that he had shot the two men, the couple called police.

When investigators got there, Routh fled in another vehicle, but he was captured a short time later.(According to ABC News)

    Tragic beyond words.

Well said @buzzlatte3:disqus, I whole-heartedly agree . The civilian population has to be better about seeing early signs in children and, as a former employee of a state veteran organization myself, I know there are programs to assist veterans with TBI (specifically PTSD) that are under-utilized. This is not because advertising budgets are too small but rather the red tape of launching an outreach campaign is too tight.

Mental illness, no matter what form it comes in, is the real crux of these events. It’s difficult to tell others, from a professional standpoint, that there’s no haven for their ill loved ones or themselves. While I don’t advocate old style institutions, I do wish that the mental health community would wake up and state the truth about the best kind of help for those that suffer.

It’s very sad that the process for having a person deemed mentally ill is so arduous and confusing. It’s darned near impossible until that person does something like this. We do need the facilities, but we also need a better means of determining the person needs a facility.
