George W. Bush may no longer be in the seat of power, but the same obsession with Iran persists and Barack Obama, despite his undeserved Nobel Peace Prize, has picked up the torch and is pressing forward with it trying to gin up a new war with Iran. Iran remains a raw, festering scab on the American body politic. We were humiliated when our Embassy was taken over by Islamic student radicals in 1979 and by a failed military rescue mission (Operation Eagle Claw) that ended in disaster in the desert of southwestern Iran.
Since the rise of the Islamic Republic, the United States–the Great Satan in the mind and mouth of the Ayatollah–has targeted that regime and fought a covert war spanning many continents. Iran demonstrated unique expertise in carrying out terrorist attacks that left lasting scars in the US memory–bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon, bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, kidnapping of American citizens in Lebanon, bombing of Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia. Quite a long list.
But from the Iranian perspective, they have their own long litany of murder and mayhem carried out by what they perceive as the clandestine hand of the United States Government. So now we have Syria, and despite the original claims in the West that we were just keen on promoting self-determination among oppressed peoples, the real mission has become clear. Getting rid of Iran by first taking out Syria.

It is all about Iran.
Lindsey Graham, the prickly Republican Senator from South Carolina, was just on Bret Baier’s show rattling the saber about going to war with Iran. (If anyone can locate that video let me know.) Of course, this is not new on his part. Just a month ago he was speaking at a conference of Christian extremists and stated the following:
“If nothing changes in Iran, come September, October, I will present a resolution that will authorize the use of military force to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb,” Senator Graham told a cheering audience at the “Christians United for Israel” conference earlier today.
This is war regardless of justification. War for war’s sake.
James Zogby put it into proper perspective a few months back:
In the coming days watch as the Israeli lobby and Neocons step up the heated rhetoric, i.e. “we must strike Syria in order to put the fear of God into Iran.” Crazy talk, but that’s where we are. And the very ones making this argument are happy to ignore the role of the United States, Turkey, the UK, France and Saudi Arabia in fomenting revolution against Assad and the Syrian military. This is a clear case of outside intervention, a violation of international law. But the United States and its band of buddies are quite selective when it comes to the matter of international law. We only care when it suits us. Yet, we indulge ourselves in the fantasy that we are special. Nope, just one more group of self-interested thugs.
