Looks like the Saudi/Israeli plan to isolate and weaken Iran has been derailed. As I have noted previously on this blog, the furor over Syria was manufactured by the United States and the United Kingdom as part of a broader strategy designed to go after Iran. Syria was just a proxy, Iran was the real target. But that’s all moot now with Russia’s bold move to put Syria’s chemical weapons under the auspices of international inspectors.
This is a very shrewd move and ultimately will either buy Iran protection and/or isolate Israel. How so? Take a look at the countries who have not ratified the chemical weapons treaty:
1 Israel 13/01/1993
2 Myanmar 14/01/1993
And the states that have neither signed nor acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convention
3 North Korea
4 South Sudan
Yes boys and girls, Israel is one of the countries flouting international law. Let me suggest one way this may play out. Watch Syria agree to accede to and sign the Chemical Weapons Convention. If they go along with allowing international inspection, guess who will be singled out for its refusal to ratify the Convention? Israel.
Puts Iran in the cat bird seat where it can ridicule Israel for its hypocrisy. This has the potential to cut in some ways not anticipated when the Saudis and Israel were trying to isolate Iran. This also potentially gives Russia and China far greater influence in the middle east.
Obama now is desperately trying to take credit for this turn around, but that is laughable. At least he is smart enough to jump on this train since his war wagon lost its wheels and horses. Obama was going to be completely emasculated in the House and the Senate had he pressed forward with the Syrian version of a Gulf of Tonkin resolution.
Only problem was that the United States and the UK lacked the intelligence to buttress their bullshit claims. You do not even need access to classified material to come to the quick conclusion that Al Nusra and Al Qaeda in Iraq each have been implicated in trying to create and use Chemical Weapons, including Sarin, inside Syria. DIA’s Deputy Director reportedly discussed aspects of this during his presentation in July at the Aspen Institute.
War fever will ratchet down a bit for the immediate future. However, look for Syria, with the help of Russia and Iran, step up efforts to crush the Islamic rebels creating mayhem in parts of Syria. Count this as a victory for Assad and a loss for Obama. However, by not starting a new war, America and its citizens are a winner.
