Its been relatively quiet over the past three days. I have been in the Midwest celebrating my 40th High School reunion. It was great fun. Saw some folks who were still easily recognizable from High School and then there were others who were unrecognizable. That was part of the treat.
Yes, I know the Government is poised to close, but, regardless about what you think or your opinion, the media already decided that this is about drowning widows and orphans. Big bad Republicans, like Nazi storm troopers, will be marching en masse thru the inner cities smashing the heads of minority babies. Few want to have an honest discussion about the merits (or, more correctly, the demerits) of proceeding full speed ahead on the disaster that will be Obamacare.
Members of the House are right to insist on holding the line in defunding Obamacare. They stand for election next year and more accurately reflect the mindset of the public. Meanwhile, Obama is busy surrendering to the Russians and Iranians. Funny thing. He’ll probably win kudos from many for a stunning victory on the foreign policy front.
How so? Peace will break out in Syria and Iran. Well, not really. But both Syria and Iran will have secured support from the international community that will allow Iran to escape from sanctions and will enable Syria to move more aggressively against the rebels, who are actually the ones that used chemical weapons. The Russians will make sure that the language of the UN Resolution on Syria is enforced. Consider the following.
Syria, while giving up useless chemical weapons, got the endorsement of the UN that it is the legitimate sovereign in Syria. Check out the language in the amendment:
Reaffirming its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, PP3. . . . Noting that on 14 September 2013, Syria deposited with the Secretary-General its instrument of accession to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction (Convention) and declared that it shall comply with its stipulations and observe them faithfully and sincerely, applying the Convention provisionally pending its entry into force for the Syrian Arab Republic, PP6. . . .
Stressing that the only solution to the current crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic is through an inclusive and Syrian-led political process based on the Geneva Communiqué of 30 June 2012, and emphasising the need to convene the international conference on Syria as soon as possible, PP13. . . .
15. Expresses its strong conviction that those individuals responsible for the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic should be held accountable; Political transition
Of course Obama will try mightily to take credit for this, but he was completely trumped by the Russians. Better yet, the Russians are now in a position to expose a US backed covert operation that was set up to help arm and supply the rebels. Under the terms of the new UN resolution, such aide is illegal and will be met with international sanctions. This means that Turkey and Saudi Arabia are being forced into a retreat and left abandoned by Obama. Do you really think such a move will bolster US credibility? Ain’t going to happen.
So, get out your popcorn, settle back in your chair, and enjoy the show. We have a full fledged three ring domestic and foreign policy circus. And Obama is the lead clown.
