Iran Thread

As some of you have noted, news breaking tonight that a deal with Iran has been reached that will lift economic sanctions on Iran:

Iran and six major powers agreed early Sunday on an historic deal that freezes key parts of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for temporary relief on some economic sanctions, diplomats confirmed.

The deal was reached after four days of marathon bargaining and an 11th-hour intervention by U.S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry and other foreign ministers from Europe, Russia and China. the sources said.

The deal, intended as first step toward a more comprehensive nuclear pact to be completed in six months, freezes or reverses progress at all of Iran’s major nuclear facilities, according to Western officials familiar with the details. It halts the installation of new centrifuges and caps the amount and type of enriched uranium that Iran is allowed to produce.

Iran also agreed to halt work on key components of a heavy-water reactor that could some day provide Iran with a source of plutonium. In addition, Iran accepted a dramatic increase in oversight, including daily monitoring by international nuclear inspectors, the officials said.

The concessions not only halt Iran’s nuclear advances but also make it virtually impossible for Tehran to build a nuclear weapon without be detected, the officials said. In return, Iran will receive modest sanctions relief and access to some of its frozen accounts overseas, concessions said to value less than $7 billion over the six-month term of the deal. The sanctions would be reinstated if Iran violates the agreement’s terms.

Israel and its supporters are going ballistic. But there’s not anything Israel can do about this. This also pisses off the Saudis and the Gulf Arabs. As I have written before, the Sunnis are alarmed that the Shia state of Iran is becoming more dominant in the region.

This is not likely to help Obama domestically, but, in my opinion, this is a positive. When it comes to terrorism, I worry more about Sunni radicals than the Shia.

What do you think?

  • TeakWoodKite

I think it is a fools errand to even think Sunni or Shia are more or less a threat comparatively. They are both a threat and are to be given no quarter. So I respectfully disagree that Iran and it’s proxy abilities are less of a threat to the stability of the region and the world in the same wacko reality Sunni’s are any less dedicated to the destruction of the USA. Or pitiful history of Foreign policy not withstanding.

OT: WSJ has a good feature story about Obama meeting with business leaders who set national priorities.

Obama conceded he is now looking at immigration reform incrementally. (In direct opposite to this wholesale categorical Obamacare mess he stupidly thought he could pull off.)

Nice to see what happens when adults are put in charge of the national agenda instead of obot ideologues.

    List from the CEO Council:

    1. Immigration reform – should mirror labor needs

    2. Education reform – more focus on career paths in K-12 and on technical, STEM and ongoing continuing targeted education to meet business needs

    3. Tax reform – current code hurts US competition

    4. Business/Government: build better bridges rather than viewing each other as adversaries

    5. Focus on health care quality outcomes – evidence based medicine, eliminate $765 billion health industry waste for unnecessary services and administrative inefficiencies

  • gracepmc

Yep. Less than 24 hours in– Iran says it has right to enrich uranium. Lurch says nope, that’s not true. Looking good. I’d hang my hat on this crackerjack deal.

And then there are the diplomatic and secret shadings, shadows, and intrigue way beyond the capacity of the average American imbecile in Obama’s realm to comprehend.

If this crew wasn’t so dangerous it would be laughable.

Obama’s foreign policy makes Obamacare look like the gold standard of medical care.

    • Deapster

Sounds as good as Ukraine playing two ends against the middle too.

International diplomacy is not for the faint of heart or those who still need training wheels and tele-promters to let someone else behind the curtain script their every move.

My guess is Romney knew how to tell a good deal from a bad one and know when to walk away, but still leave some cards on the table for re-appaisal.

That is how you get to be a mega-millionaire. You know, live and breathe the art of the deal. Better than the other side.

      • gracepmc

So true. And you have to recognize that you are not the only person in the room. That’s tough for our Barry.

In the meantime, POTUS is in SF right now for a fundraiser. And he gave a shout out to Batkid. Now he knew about that event, but…nevermind.

OT: Some interesting new posts (plants?) on the prior Mike Rogers Benghzi thread.

Claims that Romney and the neo-cons set up the attack and exploited the aftermath to make Obama look bad: http://www.noquarterusa.net/blog/76573/what-is-mike-rogers-covering-up/#disqus_thread

    • ME

Well, if Romney and the neocons had the power to not only control a radical mob, but to assure the outcome and to mold public perceptions of it…..we should have elected him president! Seriously, that would be some amazing leadership skills right there.

      • Deapster

This new posters claims Romney was able to send posts to 50 embassies claiming that the Ambassador was still alive, so nothing needed to be done.

Is this the Obama defense line floating out there among the obots and how/why did this obot come to the Mike Roger thread and plant this stinking pile.

Is this how Obama forces operate when Obama is up against the wall? An intentional mis-information campaign. Particularly now that Romney is speaking up in the face of Obamacare’s disastrous roll-out.

It was more elegant when Reagan said it: Trust, but verify.

      Somehow Kerry saying:

We don’t trust those slippery bastards as far as we can throw them, but we trust we will be able to verify every sneaky move those slippery bastards will pull off in their own country where we will position ourselves to know everything these sneaky bastards try to put over on us.

……just doesn’t have the same effect.

Plus, it is the economy, stupid. Really, this will not distract people from higher health insurance premiums. Most don’t even know where Iran is on a map, and if they do they don’t care.

    schumer disappointed by Iran deal

well chucky baby, backtrack is all yours. you did everything you could to install him in the white house.

    • Deapster

Well, “disappointment” might be a good word since wiki describes Schumer as such:

Schumer was a supporter of the Iraq War Resolution, is an American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) member, and a strident pro-Israel member of Congress,

      • TeakWoodKite

That is a joke by AIPAC standards

    • KenoshaMarge

Now Schumer gets to explain this to the Jewish voters in his district. Although why he should I don’t know. A majority voted for Obama so this deal from him belongs to them.

The 6 month sequential aspect of the deal is brilliant strategy to milk this out for all its worth for as long as he can.

And to keep focus away from his continual stream of domestic scandals. Now He is occupying his Mind on more lofty and worldly things.

So don’t go rocking the boat. This Man now has more important Things to do. Almost as good as becoming a War Time President.
