Somerset’s Girl * Open Thread

Because Larry has shared wonderful photos of his beloved Patton The Squirrel Hunter and his dearly beloved Ceasar The Wise Senior Leader who departed this week, our readers are sharing photographs of their beloved companions. About his “bitch,” our NoQuarter regular reader Somerset writes:

“Our girl is almost 9 years old (on Valentine’s Day) and has twice been a mother. She is an AKC show dog with many nice wins but always primarily a beloved member of our family. …” [The rest of the story is below the fold.]

Somerset continues:

” She has fought mammary cancer twice, and is so far winning the fight. She is the smartest, kindest, most devoted dog we have ever had but we would not recommend climbing our fence without an invitation. German shepherds rule! Somerset”

(Many more readers have submitted photos of their “companions.” We will publish them all over the next few days. However, if you do not see your photo within a few days, please e-mail me again at susanunpc at gmail dot com — it is possible that your image got misplaced in my jumbled Inbox. Thank you.)

      Hello UBM,
I read your post on another thread and from what i can tell you are against quotas for hiring any minority.
That is my view also. I believe in hiring based on the merits of the candidate
many people here are still angry that the most qualified candidate was denied the nomination based on overt sexism.
I’m at least glad that Obama takes my view on foreign policy and has selected Hillary as SOS.
Women increasingly are becoming the more educated of the species and overall do better in college with much better focus and maturity.
I think we are very close to seeing the sexist misogynist barriers break down in this society. i know that I’m ready to help this effort..how about you?

      • http://undercoverblackman.blogspot.com Undercover Black Man

Hi Seattle. I feel blessed to have come along at a time (newspaper journalism in the ’80s and ’90s) where I’ve had women bosses and the workplaces were progressive.

A generation earlier, newspapermen had liquor flasks in their desks and women weren’t taken seriously reporting hard news.

I want a world where each child can rise to whatever level her talents and hard work lift her to.

At the same time, I’m not afraid to acknowledge biological sex differences (in physical strength, for example)… and acknowledge that this can affect the performance of certain jobs (military, police officer, firefighter).

When the idea of equality becomes hard-left ideology and disregards the realities of biology, then I’m willing to speak out and be called a “pig.”

                wowowo,
You really are new here. old school bloggers like UBM and myself understand and predict other bloggers reactions to posts. all part of a community of opinions that we put up with and are not really all that offended with.

Have you ever heard of self fulfilling prophesy?

        • Seattle Moss

          Good point UBM
This may come as a surprise to some here but i’m against women in combat positions. not because they can’t do the job but because throughout history there has been an unwritten law that protects women and children in warfare.

          • http://ezinearticles.com/?Three-Basic-Parenting-Styles&id=744499 Northwest rain

Ok that is a dumb statement — warfare has changed — women are now the TARGETS in many conflicts.

It is up to women — in this volunteer military. Some women want to have combat experience.

YOU do NOT need to protect these women.

            • Seattle Moss

My concern is for women captured in combat. will they be tortured or raped

          • Galt Pizza Parlor

I would have to think about what you just said but what popped into my mind was eliminating the warfare. What a novel idea, huh? ;) I guess in the US, since the military is voluntary (see caveat below) if women wish to risk their lives for their country, they should not be prohibited from doing so in the interest of equality. This idea is not etched in stone, I just thought of it.

The caveat: One could argue due to economic circumstances the military is partially not voluntary, per se, due to people feeling they have no other way of supporting their families. Ugh, this reality does complicate thinking about this.

        • wodiej

a woman is just as physically able to do many jobs as men are, sometimes better. Are you saying a big, fat male policeman can do a better job then a physically fit woman?? Sexist indeed.

          • http://undercoverblackman.blogspot.com Undercover Black Man

In a fistfight with a felon, my money’s on the big fat male cop.

Not saying that women shouldn’t be police officers. But talk to some cops… find out about the reality of it.

It used to be said (in Baltimore, at least) that female cops went to deadly force quicker because they’re less able to handle themselves in a fight.

It’s complicated, is all I’m saying.

            • http://uppitywoman08.wordpress.com Uppity Woman

Which brings me to my argument that nobody’s a tough guy when he’s looking down the barrel of a gun.

Thanks for confirming my point, Uppity.

            • Ferd berfle

You do make lots of generalizations, UBM.

In a fistfight with a felon, my money’s on the big fat male cop.

There are more than likely many fat felons. Where did you take your courses on persuasive argument and Logic?

It used to be said (in Baltimore, at least) that female cops went to deadly force quicker because they’re less able to handle themselves in a fight.

Ah, so because people said it, it must be true. That old argument to the populace again. Anecdotes do not reflect the truth but an underlying bias.

I have a few anecdotes I have heard over the years that I could post here but because people like you would accuse me of racism, I won’t. That doesn’t excuse you, however, for your apparent sexism, a form of bigotry that you find to be acceptable. So much for you and your selective indignation. Your arguments are shallow, sophomoric, and transparent–as are you.

        • http://noquarterusa.net/ NoQuarter

I had a great experience as an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, before I went to college. I went to work for a rural newspaper that was very important to a small population spread widely over vast desert lands brought to life solely by irrigation.

They’d liked my writing in the high school columns, and invited me to spend a summer interning. I began with the bottom-of-the-heap news such as the obituaries and the Saturday religion page. During the summer, their political reporter was hired by The Seattle Times, and who do you think they asked to take his place? Me. Because they knew that I knew all about state politics, and a good bit about national politics, because I was such a nerdy political junkie.

Oh, the men in that place. They had liquor not just in their desk drawers but also in the glove compartment of the cars, where they’d go often.

My boss was the city editor with a great name, the kind that newspaper men used to have: Click Relander. And there i was, a GIRL, not even a woman yet.

They had me cover the state Republican convention held in the same small city where the newspaper was located. (Now, mind you, I knew Republicans well. Besides the fact that I only knew one Democrat ever before going to college, I started the first-ever statewide Teenage Republican groups, and we held a statewide convention that summer that I ran from the podium.) That weekend of the adults’ state convention, I sat through it all and took copious notes. I interviewed all of the major players. Because I was familiar with all of them, and their records, I deduced certain strategies being played out and a conflict that seemed to dominate the event.

That conflict. It became my lead. And my story was published on the front page of the newspaper with my byline.

On Monday, I saw an infuriated top Republican official storm through the room where we reporters all sat, and into the publisher’s office, slamming the door behind him. I saw Click Relander go into the room.

The publisher and Click were excoriated for publishing my story. I could hear that top Republican, he was yelling so loudly.

Click came out eventually and told me that the Republican was extremely unhappy with my lead. It was a conflict that was not to be mentioned, apparently. But Click told me that he stood by my story and that the publisher did too.

That was not easy for either man to do since they were Republicans too — hell, as i said, everyone for hundreds of miles around was Republican! — but they stood up for me. An 18-year-old girl, not yet a woman. And for my story.

What is the biggest regret of my life? Well, one of them? That I did not postpone college — even though it was Stanford — and stayed at that newspaper for another two or three years.

Click and those reporters taught me so much about reporting, about investigating, about checking sources, about the perfect way to write a news story.

UBM, I thought you might appreciate that old story. That was 1965. Now you know how old I am, don’t you. Hillary’s age.

Sadly, intervening events during my college years undid me emotionally, and i lost all my confidence. In 1969, I walked into the Seattle P.I., talked to a brusque editor, but he scared me and i couldn’t talk, and i just left. All the confidence was gone. I still could have written just as well at that time. But my belief in myself had dissipated so much, and then there was that nobody had taught me, beyond Click, how to be pushy and badger someone into giving me a job. If they said no, I thought they meant it and I didn’t push back. Oh well. I’ve had another kind of life and it’s been rich and wonderful.

And the life of a newspaper reporter is a tough one. It’s no wonder half those men kept bottles of liquor wherever they could squirrel them away. Every good reporter I’ve ever known got very cynical down the road.

          Just a story.

          • http://undercoverblackman.blogspot.com Undercover Black Man

I not only appreciated the story, Susan… I want to change my name to “Click Relander.” If he’s still using it, I’ll take “Clip Freelander.”

While I’m not surprised you are anti affirmative action (which helps women) this sentence needs a little work…

I believe in hiring based on the merits of the candidate
many people here are still angry that the most qualified candidate was denied the nomination based on overt sexism.

To avoid looking like a loon (and making this site less than credible) perhaps the next time you go on like this you should be a bit more careful.

        Perhaps try this….

I believe in hiring based on the merits of the candidate
many people here are still upset that the candidate they viewed as most qualified lost the nomination. Despite her many gaffes and poor management of the campaign, many of us think sexism had a lot to do with her losing.

After all, there are only three qualifications to be president and both Hillary and Barack had them all.

The rest is subjective, and as Larry wants to open up this site I feel comments like yours do little but annoy new readers with your faux certitude.

        • Seattle Moss

How about obama’s many gaffes that were overlooked by the media. The fact is that the media wants to make money so they chose the most profitable candidate for their long term interests.
Obama gamed the system. I was a victim at one of the caucuses. The fact also is that much of what obama raised in contributions came from foreign interests. What about all the sealed documents. there clearly was bias and obama benefited. The DNC were tired of the Clinton power and decided to depose it.
having said all that i look forward to a centrist obama who has brought in much of the former clinton structure
you can game an election..But when you win you have to lead. obama can’t make it without the people he previously scorned.

          • wowo

Which caucus were you a victim of, and can you link to any credible reports of problems in your state?

Obama’s gaffes were not unreported. They just weren’t as bad as Hillary’s.

You do remember the 24/7 Rev Wright don’t you?

Do you have any evidence at all that more than 65k of 700 million was a foreign contribution?

Despite your many conspiracy theories Obama ran a much smoother, proficient, and disciplined campaign and that is why he is President-elect.

And finally can you name 10 Clintonites in official White House positions and not Transition team?

Rahm, Hillary, Bill Richardson…. there you go all I need is seven more.

            • Seattle Moss

Plenty of problems in my state with ACORN. also it is common knowledge that Obama gamed the caucuses with acorn. i know that at my caucus three additional buses with people outside my area with bull horns were intimidating the Hillary voter.
Obama gaffes were sexist and rude and showed a lack of maturity. maybe he might learn form them.
I’m glad that obama is throwing the left wing fringe under the bus. I guess he wants to win over the 56 million that voted against him.
my theory is that in 4 years it maybe the conservatives that support obama and not the defeat and retreat liberals.
Obama is an engineering project and as the figurehead of that project was able to win.
As for the other clinton cabinet appointees. Up to 30 have been announced at various levels that you can google. I’m not here to do your work.

              • wowo

                wrong wrong wrong.

30 transition jobs. Big Difference. Who would know more about transition than Clintonistes that had done it. And learned from their many mistakes.

ACORN?? What a joke. Funny how not a single charge was laid re ACORN. Not one.

Not a single voter charged with fraud. Not One.

Wonder why ACORN isn’t in the news anymore?

Where are the official complaints or accusations, not fud on the internets.

So you never really liked Hillary then did you? It was all just a rat fuc*ing con job huh?

Hillary got and clapped like a great American
Obama has listened to the conservatives and now realizes that it is a cruel world.
No more fantasy.Obama has seen the briefings that bush gets and has decided to on a hawkish foreign policy.

    Hi Larry.

Could you please clear a few things up for the people here that insist on repeating fud.

Was Pakistan on a state dept No Go list in 1981 that would have prohibited Obama from using an American passport to travel there?

I can find no such evidence.

Is there a single bit of evidence that the state of HI has ever issued a BC/COLB with city of birth as Honolulu when the applicant was born elsewhere?

I see it claimed over and over that HI allows for after the fact registration but that is a far cry from changing the birth city.

If the COLB is real, game set match no?

Leo and Judah are hoping to get the SCOTUS to define, for the first time, Natural Born in such a narrow scope as to disqualify Obama.

I read here all the time that this is matter of fact and that the scotus would be negligent if they refused to act.

The reason I ask for clarification is because it is almost impossible to have a serious conversation with some of your commenters here who insist the above is true fact.

Not only does it become annoying to read this over and over but it makes serious people go elsewhere.

A post to clear up some misconceptions would go a long way for people wishing to link to a respected authority here.

    Thanks in advance.

I too would like these facts cleared up.
I find it strange that HI says they have Obama’s records on file but do not say he was actually born in HI. This is even true after many have asked for an assurance by someone in charge as to Obama’s birthplace. Many are now finding it strange that HI is not celebrating having someone born in their state elected as president.(For some reason Kenya is celbrating being the birthplace of Obama but not Kenya.)
I too have tried finding records as to Americans being allowed into Pakinstan. In the late 1990s while taking a World Geography course in college, a professor told us that certain countries in the Middle East were off limits to Americans. Sadly I no longer have the notes nor do I remember the names of the countries.

I know the BC issue is not a question just anyone can answer, for so far it seems that Obama is unwilling to bring forth a copy of his long form BC.
But it would be nice if someone could show some backup on the Pakinstan visit questions.

      • wowo

Larry is former State Dept. He will know about Pakistan.

HI has said ALL it is legally permitted to say. They said they are in possession of his ORIGINAL BC.

There is no earthly reason they would have an original BC from another country. Period.

All the ‘confusions’ is fud. Parsing in order to keep the conspiracy alive.

Even the idea Obama could spend $15 to produce a ‘vault’ copy is crap. He asked for a copy of his BC and that is what he was sent.

He did not ask for a short form.

‘Many people’ say the colb isn’t valid for many different HI applications but what they fail to say is that the COLB is what they accept and then the agency must do FURTHER follow up with the records department. Not from the applicant. The process takes longer and those agencies recommend you submit a long form if you have it.

        • KintheNorthwest

Ok Wowo, I will admit I am a bit skeptical. I do not mean to judge or jump on you. But here are a couple of facts that make people question what is happening with Obama’s BC.

Several of Obama’s Kenya relatives have stated they witnessed Obama’s birth.

According to a Kenya ambassador they plan to errect a monument in the city where he was born.(Why isnt Hawaii celebrating? Their state is supposively the birth place to not only the first US black president, but this is the first time a president has been elected from their state—strange). So why is Kenya is celebrating but not HI.

Remember that in HI one could record their child’s birt after the fact (is this what HI is talking about?–Dont tell me you know what was on their mind when they spoke to the media, for I am only asking).

If indeed Obama got a short form instead of a long form as you seem to think he thought he would get , then why in the heck didnt he just reorder his BC. Come on Wowo $15 is not even a drop in the bucket for Obama.

If you search the internet you will not only find out where McCain was born but the hospital.—Hmmm you can do that for Obama too, but there seems to be a conflict of information–He was born in two different hospitals … Strange most people are only born in one.

To top off all the conflicts in Obama’s place of birth, we still have him registered in school as an Indonesian citizen under the name of Barry Soetoro. (Hey maybe his parents lied to get him in school, or maybe his stepfather legally adopted him. Who knows, Obama wont answer this, and if anyone asks about it you are considered a Racist.)

          • wowo

“Several of Obama’s Kenya relatives have stated they witnessed Obama’s birth.”

Nope. Just a bogus affidavit produced by a really whacked out preacher. In fact the transcript was cut short to hide the clarification in translation. Hardly evidence.

“According to a Kenya ambassador they plan to errect a monument in the city where he was born.”

I’m sorry but those two shock jocks intentionally tried to put words in his mouth and the embassy has stated clearly he was talking about Obama’s father Barack Sr.

“Remember that in HI one could record their child’s birth after the fact”

After the fact HI BCs list the city of birth outside HI. Obama’s colb says he was born in Honolulu.

“then why in the heck didnt he just reorder his BC. Come on Wowo $15 is not even a drop in the bucket for Obama.”

More FUD. Did you read my first post on this subject? HI does NOT issue long form BCs. This is a freeper myth. The agencies that do not accept a short form alone do the additional research themselves. They do not demand you posses your original BC.

“He was born in two different hospitals … Strange most people are only born in one.”

More freeper imaginations. He is clear on which hospital he was born in and nobody has contradicted him. Despite what the freepers post. You need to stop believing everything you read.

“Who knows, Obama wont answer this, and if anyone asks about it you are considered a Racist.”

Obama has answered this, saying he knows nothing about it because he was 6 years old and he never saw the school enrolement form.

Even if Soetoro adopted him it makes no difference AT ALL. A minor is not able to renounce citizenship, and no guardian can do it for them. Simple.

            It can’t be clearer.

BTW guess where the following quote comes from…..

A separate *** investigation into Obama’s birth certificate utilizing forgery experts also found the document to be authentic. The investigation also revealed methods used by some of the bloggers to determine the document was fake involved forgeries, in that a few bloggers added text and images to the certificate scan that weren’t originally there.

            • KintheNorthwest

could you give me some backup for your last cmment about it not being a forgery.
ALl I can seem to find is sites about it being a forgery….

Is there an unbias site about it not being a forgery. I can give you about 3 or 4 sites on it being a forgery…

              • wowo

                Thanks for asking….

I left out the link and put asterisks in place of the call letters to make you guess.

Strangely enough that paragraph comes from World Nut Daily, staunch freeper conspiracy site that employs Jerome Corsi.

                http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=73214

                • KintheNorthwest

since there are several sites, two I think since Nov that question the BC in detail….Just a partial sentence in a(or several)newpapers still leaves questions not only for me, but I think thousands of people.

All Obama has to do is get his vault copy and show it to either unbias lawyers, media or some sorce that is unbiased.

I guess the reason I still have my questions is that too much information of his has been sealed. Information that we have on all other Presidents, and presidential candidates. WHY???

                  • wowo

                    You are being purposely obtuse.

Why can’t you link to a credible source questioning his COLB?

Even Michele Malkin, the LGF crew, HotAir and any respectable rightwing site says the colb is real. Even the nutty WND says it is real.

Regarding “Vault” copy… Can’t you read?

Give me a single…SINGLE…source that says Obama could get a copy of his long form BC.

Then tell me why he should waste his time trying to placate people that will always despute the evidence he provides.

Can’t you see it has already happened several times….. the colb nuts are ALREADY saying the long form isn’t trust worthy coming from HI because they are in the tank… they are ALREADY saying even IF he was born right where the COLB says he was born it doesn’t matter.

His dad magically makes him ineligible, even though there isn’t a single legal precedent for such a miopic view of the constitution.

Regarding “Vault” copy… Can’t you read?

,,,,and you have to ask why people don’t take to you well.

            • KintheNorthwest

Oh I forgot —- with the indonesian school registration most are just looking for Obama to address it .

If it was his parents doing and/or they were lying then fine.

Its just strange that Obama has not addressed in in any form.
Why the name change back to Barrack. Was Barry a legal name or ??? If it was a legal name as a child when did he change it back? If he was legally adopted, when and why the name change back?

              • wowo

Obama said he has never seen the document and has no idea how his parents registered him in school because he was 6 years old.

                What are you missing?

Even if Obama never responded to it the paper is worthless because no minor can renounce citizenship or have a guardian do it for them.

Obama would have to have renounced his citizenship after reaching 18 years old.

That’s why the fringes pretend he must have traveled to Pakistan using an Indonesian passport.

I know it is convoluted but that’s the way ‘truthers’ perpetuate debunked theories.

Somerset, that is one gorgeous dog. And that she’s such a love is truly a wonder.

It is wonderful that she has survived cancer. And that you took surely a very expensive route to aiding her. Let us hope that the treatment of cancers in animals has progressed as much as the treatment of humans.

But i will never — i promise — climb your fence. But if i do, leave what’s left of me for the creatures of the wild who depend on carrion.

beautiful dog! My Dad always loved German Shepherds. We had several when I was growing up. One was Duke. If we went somewhere for the weekend, Duke would walk around the entire perimeter of our property sniffing.

Beautiful dog. I’ve had big dogs and now I like little dogs and so do my cats. However, I do know a huge dog who was beloved by his herd of cats — he was a cross between a Poodle and and a one of the sheep protection breeds. The cats considered him to be their heated cat bed — the cats would fight over which one got the dog.

My little dog is very smart — he learned to go potty to “obama” — “Obama time” — or “go do an Obama”.

Beautiful dog as well as Larry’s rotties

We have 5 dogs, all mixed. They were all dropped off when we lived in the woods. Nothing I can’t stand more are those who abuse their animals and children.

Our little female, Girl, (she got that name because that is what she responded to when we found her) rules the roost over her four much bigger brothers.

Herman, our old German Shepherd mix still checks on our now 18 year old every night to make sure she is safe in bed.
