Delius and Florida Suite… Open Thread

Below is the third movement called “Sunset – Near the Plantation,” from Florida Suite by Delius (obtained from YouTube**). The bit from 3:59 to 4:59 is perhaps one of the most delightful pieces of music I have ever heard. The text accompanying my CD* attributes the inspiration to a “well enough known theme sung, it may be supposed, by the black plantation workers in Florida, the setting of the sun leading to a dance with elements of apparent Spanish origin, heard through the prism of black America.”

I am no expert but I have this little quirk, my spouse tells me, of zeroing in on the little sections in any composition that have the most melody. When I listen to that one minute (from 3:59 to 4:59), I invariably start swaying and smiling silly — it makes me happy. The rhythm of the strings, the lone English horn (I think) intruding so gallantly at 4:41, and the cymbals at 4:59 (watch out, they are loud) leading to an ecstacy of sound…

Now, tell me about your music and your musical quirk, if any.

Is there any music that goes to a perp walk? Some people from Chicago might be interested in going to prison in style.

  • socalannie

That was lovely, pm317, thank you! I’ve never heard it before.

  • lark

It sounds exactly like 2008. I hate to listen to what comes next. I don’t think it will sound that exiting anymore.

Do you think Hillary feels like those 10 minutes of music? Maybe last week but not this one.

I feel those 10 minutes were just as good when they where played but today I hear them as an illusion.

Did you said ‘open thread’ for the musically oriented?

    Thanks for the Musical Interlude

Our sunsets on the West coast of FLA were the most beautiful indeed but I still don’t miss the heat.

Now, tell me about your music and your musical quirk, if any.

and since you asked, it’s not a quirk really I just don’t listen to music enough these days.

Well, I was having an almost spiritual experience listening to the music and gazing at the lovely sunset in the picture, and then I had to scroll down to this comment and spray the computer screen with beverage (I won’t say which).

Thank you PM317–I like this piece of music very much.

    It’s not at all fussy
    Like Brahms or Debussy,

or maybe some of that stuff Old Grumpy Guy plays . . . very nice. I’ll recover from my gastric spasm and try to listen to it calmly.

Take it easy, Lark. We do have to get away and escape from the uglyness in real life sometimes.

Illinois governor ignores Obama’s call to resign.

lol, looks like blagwitch is pi**ed.

  • pm317

I know that first one (Enya) but it has been years since I listened to it.

  • pm317

I like all three Brahms, Debussy and OGG.

  • oowawa

O God, I can’t resist questions like this. “Song of the Volga Boatmen” gives the proper sense of trudging off to doom. “Flight of the Bumblebee” is probably a little too lively, but it does convey the sense of hysteric joy we’ll feel as they fly Blago away to the “hive.”

  • pm317

    He will spill the beans.

  • oowawa

I wouldn’t confess it to OGG, but I do too.

    Thanks for sharing yours..

  • pm317

I am glad you liked it. You might levitate to the other movements too. It has 4 movements all of them very good. But the one minute I refer to always takes my breath away. Like you said, my laptop does not have good speakers either. In addition to the rhythm of the strings , you should be able to hear the bass going bumph, bumph..in the background and who knew the little triangle could contribute in such a big way. The CD is pretty good.

The thinking Is He will Walk to “JAILHOUSE ROCK…:

  • oowawa

Listened to both Dawnelle–thanks, very nice. I don’t feel the slightest urge to be snarky. I found end-of-the-year seasonal aspects in both songs. TIRED of politics? You betcha. ‘Tis the season to be jolly. We’ll do our best.

  • oowawa

Wow Patrick, perfect! The lyrics to this song tells us a lot about how Blago’s life will be behind bars. First of all, we know what instrument he will play:

Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone,
Little Joe was blowin on the slide trombone.
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang,
The whole rhythm section was The Purple Gang.

And we even know what his “number” in prison will be:

Number forty-seven said to number three:
Youre the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
I sure would be delighted with your company,
Come on and do the jailhouse rock with me.

Given that Blago is #3, I assume #47′s name is Bubba.

I understand as I ride the “SNARK” mobile myself!

    ;-)

I had stopped celebrating or saying Happy anything until Hillary ran and then Sarah and NOW I say it with glee and watch with wonder at some of the reactions.

Mostly all Very Glad to respond. We’re even planning on doing Xmas Eve (Protestant style) for the first time in a decade as well.

It’s not all for snark or spite but for realization that the world is round and I’m allowed to enjoy my OWN beliefs w/out feeling guilty for going or NOT going! Ya know?

  • Dawnelle

speaking of holiday music (were we? lol)
