Internet Petition concerning Michael Vick

From Pat Lang (and, as the owner of two Rotties, I share his outrage):

Those Virginians who wish to join me in petitioning Governor Kaine in support of state prosecution of Michael Vick For illegal dog-fighting can find the petition at the link below. Text of the petition follows. pl

———————————————————————————-

“We, the undersigned citizens of Virginia petition the governor of the commonwealth asking that he ensure that Michael Vick, the confessed patron of illegal dog fighting within the borders and on the territory of Virginia be investigated and prosecuted by the Commonwealth of Virginia to the fullest extent possible under state law.”

I’m not a Virginia resident either, but I applaud the sentiment. To me, it doesn’t matter that Vick’s victims weren’t human beings – some things shouldn’t happen to any animal.

I love reading everything at Pat’s blog, including the very good comments. This post by Pat, and now by Larry, meant so much because what Vick did was so cruel and ugly. It is important to prosecute and convict every person involved in this unspeakable “sport.” Someday, perhaps, we can put an end to it.

A couple weeks ago, I read a newspaper story about Vick’s life. One of his relatives said that, when he was a boy — for entertainment — he and his friends would “sic” dogs on neighborhood cats. I just can’t comprehend why anyone would do that or that the adults in his life didn’t try to teach him humane treatment of all animals. Now, he’s a highly disturbed adult who’s probably beyond education, and that makes punishment our only option.

Larry, someday you’ll have to post a photo of your Rotties.

Hmmm, maybe we can have a Friday night pet blogging open thread sometime soon. That’d be such fun. I think we can post images in our comments here, right?

I’ve signed several petitions regarding this, I’m not a VA resident, so I don’t want to tarnish the effort.
I’m looking at my two pooches right now and I have extremely strong feelings on the matter. Both of our dogs and our three cats are rescues. The cruelty in the Vickmatter and all those that participate in this barbarism is beyond my comprehension.
My wish is that good will come from this, perhaps a Saul of Tarsus – Damascus moment of redemption for Vick. 18th century English slavetrader John Newton comes to mind. Will this happen? I know not.
