Pay to Play Superdelegate Style

(bumped up from Tuesday evening by Susan — because it’s so good!)

There has been a lot of talk lately about Pay to Play. What with Blagojevich getting caught trying to sell Obama’s senate seat? What of Obama and his people perhaps trying to negotiate something for that seat (Read Fitzgerald’s Complaint or Truthteller’s posts.)

There are many unanswered questions. For instance, why would Blagojevich take this direction if he did not think maybe from past experience that Obama would be receptive?

If Obama was the lone virgin in the whorehouse of Chicago politics (as one commenter put it), why would Blagojevich even attempt this at this time knowing that the Feds are on to him? May be our premise is wrong. Obama is not the lone virgin as Obama supporters might dream.

Look at what happened during the primaries. Things got rough and competitive. Hillary Clinton and her supporters put up a good fight. How could they not when many of them knew she got the majority popular vote and would have led in delegates if not for DNC shenanigans? It all came down to the superdelegates. But Obama was ready and I am sure his experience with Chicago politics came in handy. Political Intelligence revealed some numbers back in February:

Obama’s political action committee has doled out more than $694,000 to superdelegates since 2005, the study found, and of the 81 who had announced their support for Obama, 34 had received donations totaling $228,000.

Who gave him all that money and why? He just got elected to the senate in 2004. Would Fannie and Freddie be in there? Most definitely. He was the second politician to get the most money from Fannie and Freddie next only to Dodd. He is a miracle worker. But but..I digress.

Back to the Political Intelligence story from February, because I can hear Obama supporters screaming, “Hillary did it too!” Perhaps. But the scale of the numbers tells you a different story. Looks to me like Hillary was arguing for the merits of the case when many superdelegates were thinking “what is in it for me?”

Clinton’s political action committee has distributed about $195,000 to superdelegates, and only 13 of the 109 who had announced for her have received money, totaling about $95,000.

When the article was written in February, about half the 800 superdelegates had committed to either Clinton or Obama. All those people who partook a share of the $694,000 slowly trickled into Camp Obama without making it of course, too obvious. Sort of Pay to Play in slow motion.

Fast forwarding to now, how is this for a pay to play? We all know how the quiet and very private aristocrat Caroline Kennedy (she seems to have dropped the Schlossberg name) was thrust into the limelight by her uncle, Ted Kennedy during the primary and how she campaigned for Obama. Ted Kennedy is now pressuring NY Governor Paterson to appoint Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg to Senator Clinton’s seat. From NYPost this is what Ted Kennedy told Paterson:

The elder Kennedy (D-Mass.), who’s battling brain cancer, has sent word to Gov. Paterson’s office that Caroline Kennedy, 51, has contacts and family connections that would mean legislation affecting New York would receive prompt attention, family sources said.

What exactly is he saying? That lawmakers don’t do their job without the influence of name and money? Unlike Blagojevich, these people are not crass enough to buy or sell with money but they do want a senate seat for campaigning for Obama.

Elections? Who needs them? Let us just:

* put it on eBay and sell it to the highest bidder
* dig dirt on the opponents’ sex life and eliminate them before the elections, of course
* get an uncle to throw his weight (a lot of it) around
* dispute signatures and other evidence of opponent’s support and eliminate them
* bribe or threaten the corrupt media to start their chorus and sing your tune

All of them have been tested by PEBO and have his seal of approval except the first one. That will be my suggestion and we will save millions of taxpayer dollars.

Wait.. I almost forgot

* scream racist at the opponent and his/her supporters (unique to PEBO but may be copied for future reference by any AA politician.)

{Speaking for me only.}

begs the question — what will Howard Dean be doing next?! With his Obama connection and throwing Hillary to the wolves Dean is must have been promised a sweetheart deal – espeacially after moving the DNC to Chicago.

Investigate Dean, Brazille and the DNC rules and bylaws committee. All crooks and liars every.one.of.them.

The questiion is will we EVER have a Congress or White House with any integrity again?

  • Kal

It does make it tough for democracy to find a way into this corrupt mess.

  • yttik

Great post! You really summed it up well and made all those connections going back to the primary and to the type of politics Obama played to get his Illinois Senate seat.

Isn’t it grand, we’re going to clean up DC by bringing Chicago politics to the capital. Change you can choke on.

  • Diana L. C.

    pm317,

Thanks for the post. It does make it clearer to some–if they take the time to read–why the superdelegate buyout was just plain cheating.

IF anyone would ever get around to really investigating where and how O got his huge campaign war chest, then it will be even clearer.

  • Alibe

I would like to hear just what Howard Dean will receive for selling his soul. Or was he coerced to go along? This is a mystery that intrigues me. Just why did Howard Dean act the way he did? He reminds me of the way Tony Blair alligned himself to Bush. The why has never been fully explained.

  • DeaninMi

    “Democracy”?

Hmm. What a quaint idea. Maybe we’ll try it in this country sometime.

Just when I thought nothing else could possibly insult and infuriate me more than this past presidential campaign, along comes Caroline Kennedy. During the primaries we were vilified and chastised for voting for Hillary just because she was a women, although the same ridicule was NOT heaped on African Americans who were voting for Barry just because he was African American. Then we were told Sarah Palin was not qualified despite being a mayor and then governor of Alaska, and being a successful governor at that. Now, along comes the dregs of Camelot who has never done a thing of substance in her life and we’re all supposed to be delighted. Let’s ignore other qualified elected officials and go straight for the Kennedy. I started my volunteer political life campaigning for RFK so I am far from a Kennedy hater, but THIS is almost too much to bear.

  • candymarl

The fact that you pointed any of this out is racist.

The weak-kneed Hillary has her former President husband to help her. That proves she’s not a real feminist.

Caroline Kennedy has her uncle to help her. He’s pulling political strings on her behalf. These facts mean Caroline is a strong feminist.

What happens when the RNC gets a clue and runs a non-white male candidate (I say male because evidently Evangelicals didn’t like the idea of woman on the ticket)? Will that be historic? Nope. That means that person is a self-hating sellout. And a racist.

Did I mention that my mentioning racism is racist? Unless I’m Barack Hussein Obama.
Obama – he who must not be middle-named – unless he says so.

    I gotta lie down.

  • Objective Analysis

Yeah, Obama (or the One) got his money (at least $402 Million) from foreign investments:

Can you say saudia arabia, Iran, Hamas, Indonesia, Kenya?

If you are a foreign usurper, that is the way to go to complete your coup de’tat. Reminds you of how Obama’s uncle got into office in Kenya. Slaughter the christians and have him come down as “The One” to claim he can heal their land.

Yesterday, TexasDarlin wrote about Kennedy, and said this:

Last week Caroline’s uncle, Ted Kennedy, suggested to Gov. Paterson that the Kennedy brand would benefit New York:

The elder Kennedy (D-Mass.), who’s battling brain cancer, has sent word to Gov. Paterson’s office that Caroline Kennedy, 51, has contacts and family connections that would mean legislation affecting New York would receive prompt attention, family sources said.

What does that mean, exactly? Is Uncle Teddy promising to use his influence to help New York if its Governor appoints his thinly-qualified niece to the US Senate?

I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, but part of your article looks very similar. Honestly, I’ve noticed this a few times before — that NQ articles published after TD articles use very similar words. Maybe something to watch?

Is that the name you want? YOU GOT IT.

Play for play in all different forms.

“Obama Supporter Jesse Jackson, Jr: Black Super-Delegates Who Back Hillary Could Face Primary Challenge
    By Greg Sargent – February 15, 2008, 11:01AM

A black supporter of Hillary, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, has given an interview in which he sheds light on some pretty interesting efforts by Obama supporter Jesse Jackson, Jr., to privately persuade him to rethink his support of Clinton:
In an interview, Cleaver offered a glimpse of private conversations.

He said Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois had recently asked him “if it comes down to the last day and you’re the only superdelegate? … Do you want to go down in history as the one to prevent a black from winning the White House?

“I told him I’d think about it,” Cleaver concluded.

    AND

    Black backers steadfast for Clinton
    By: Josephine Hearn
    February 29, 2008 05:56 PM EST

African-American superdelegates said Thursday that they’ll stand up against threats, intimidation and “Uncle Tom” smears rather than switch their support from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to Sen. Barack Obama.

““This is the politics of the 1950s,” he complained. “A lot of members are experiencing a lot of ugly stuff. They’re not going to talk about it, but it’s happening.”

After civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) switched his support from Clinton to Obama earlier this week, other black superdelegates have come under renewed pressure to do a similar about-face. A handful have bowed to the entreaties in recent weeks, including Georgia Rep. David Scott, but many say they are steadfast in their support for Clinton and resent strong-arm tactics to make them change.

Rep. Diane E. Watson (D-Calif.), a black lawmaker and Clinton backer, said the intense lobbying for Obama would not alter her vote.

“I’ve gotten threatening mail,” Watson said. “They say, ‘Your district went 61-29 Obama and you need to change.’ But I don’t intimidate. I can hold the ground. … I would lose my seat over my principles.”

The problem with all this is: no one can be “hoodwinked and bamboozled” unless they allow themselves to be. We can blame the press for not doing their jobs [I certainly do]. But this information about pay to play “was” out there for those interested in searching, reading and considering.

Most voters did not search, read, let alone consider. They hated the Bush administration [with good reason]. They bought into change [in a dopey fashion] and they decided to trust in the “hope” mantra and other stupid memes: we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

How many people asked themselves: what the Hell does that mean?? It sounds poetic [I actually read that this was a Hopi saying], but what does it really mean in a political sense, America 2008? Vagueness, lack of details and specifics, elevated language all worked for Obama because his supporters . . .

did not question the content. They wanted to believe; they still want to believe, regardless of any evidence that may be exposed. There are always excuses, explanations and howls for any and all critics.

I read an incredible exchange the other day on a progressive site arguing that CK’s appointment to the NY Senate was a fantastic idea for the very fact that she comes:

untouched by politics, fresh and smart, a Constitutional lawyer with several books and a passionate interest in and dedication to education reforms to her credit.

These comments? I’d wager there was no research, no consideration of the facts before people started spouting the merits of Caroline Kennedy.

And qualifications, experience? They’re passe, obviously. And so is honesty and integrity. Ted Kennedy and Caroline came out early to support Obama. Now it’s payback time.

pm313 has written to the pay to play scheme very well. And we’re seeing the game played out, all around us. Different variations on a theme, from superdelegates who sold their souls during the primary to Senate seats sold crassly, directly, or the velvet sell for political favors and/or access to funds in the future.

I almost wish I could close my eyes and dream of Camelot. Or take a sip of that koolaid. But I can’t and I won’t.

It’s going to be a long four years.

Jackson, Jr. an informant to Blago investigations
    Posted: 06:25 PM ET
Sources close to Rep. Jackson, Jr. told CNN Tuesday that the Illinois congressman has supplied information regarding Gov. Blagojevich to federal law enforcement officials since 2006.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (CNN) — Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. — who was cited in a criminal complaint against Rod Blagojevich — has been an informant for at least a decade with the U.S. Attorney’s office, and has informed on the embattled governor of Illinois, though not in the case currently under investigation, Jackson spokesman Kenneth Edmonds told CNN Tuesday.

In addition, two sources close to Jackson told CNN that, in 2002, Blagojevich — then running for governor of Illinois — solicited a $25,000 campaign donation from Jackson, which he did not get.

At the time, Jackson’s wife, Sandi, was a candidate for the job of director of the state’s Lottery Commission, a post she did not win, the sources said.

After Blagojevich took office, in early 2003, he told Jackson something to the effect of, “You see what $25,000 would have done?” the sources said.

In 2006, Jackson reported the incident, which he believed to have been an attempt at a shakedown, the sources said.

The corollary to that is, “never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” This last election cycle certainly makes this statement appropriate.

  • Matt P

    Wow…

You have to be a VERY ANGRY and BIASED Hillary supporter for that argument to really speak to you.

Obama won the majority of the elected delegates, and somehow you try to spin it as though he only one through dirty use of Super Delegates?

    Wow….

    Wow…

  • Ferd Berfle

Won? LMAO. Hey rube, the correct term is scammed, bamboozled, misdirected, and others too numerous to mention in the short space here.

You get an “A” for utter gall and an “F” for naivete. You’re just all over the place.

  • stodgie

gee mat, wow? that sounds so obot! can’t you do any better than that? biased? go look it up in the dictionary. clearly you don’t know the meaning.

  • Seattle Moss

    Right on Oiaf!

Maybe this will teach people to honor and respect the voting process next time.

These Obots thought they were voting for American Idol.
Obama has already destroyed the rich and isn’t even president yet.

FDR..Brother can you spare me a dime!

Obama…All they have left is CHANGE in their pockets…

I’m glad I saw it coming!

  • stodgie

ferd, i bow to your superior ability to put obots in their place. i can’t hold a candle.

  • Diana L. C.

I am sooo waiting for the final release!

  • Indy G-Dog
  • lark

That’s what I said. Besides the case is that if he was Fitz rat I will bet Blago walks.

  • Ferd Berfle

You do quite well, stodgie. You have the gig down pat–hit them hard and quick so they either back off or, being the gluttons for punishment they are, they come back with their bot friends for group self-abuse. I do think some of them get some sort of perverse pleasure in being verbally spanked. Yuck.

  • stodgie

maybe that is why blago is so not wanting to resign. i bet in the end blago sings for fitz. the name of the song? who’s sorry now?

  • Ferd Berfle

As a staunch HRC supporter, it chaps my backside to see that sycophant even being mentioned as a replacement. I certainly hope New Yorkers don’t buy it and let the gov know in no uncertain terms.

  • Seattle Moss

    I always Copy mine now.
    I understand your frustration!

  • stodgie

yup, i too support hillary. right now she is above all of this and that isn’t a bad thing. patterson might better think about the fact that ted won’t be around for long. the rest of the kennedys don’t have that type of power anymore. most certainly caroline won’t. she won’t have any real support either. who would? obama will have his hands full and patterson doesn’t have necessary toughness to survive.

  • I’m a Linda too

His career is over. Dirty and a rat. An opportunistic rat who chooses when to tell when it best suits him. OUCH!

  • bemused

Maybe something happened in 2006 to make him see that not reporting felonies is conspiring to commit felonies? And he decided to be helpful to someone, say, a prosecutor? It seems to me he looks like he feels darn guilty about something, but I suppose it could be bad for his health to be a snitch as much as if he were a crook.

  • IndyBoomer

I just finished watching the parts 3 and 4 of HBO’s “House of Saddam”. The strange thing was, the whole time I watched it, I felt like I was watching Obama. It was eerie and frightening. Saddam always wanted to give speeches in times of crisis while he did unspeakable stuff in the “back room”. He had school children singing his praises (remember the Obama camps?) He insisted upon loyalty. He stole money from the people and the government. He hid behind the Qu’uran. The “people” weren’t allowed to do things, but anyone in Saddam’s family could do what they pleased.Saddam lied to everyone, often and openly. He was highly narcissistic and wanted his portraits everywhere. He loved going out into the crowds to feel “adored”. Holy crap, 52% of the sheeple in the U.S. just elected a dictator! We are doomed.

    well….duhhhh…

  • Seattle Moss

You know things are dire when you have Bush saying this…
Bush said in an interview Tuesday he was forced to sacrifice free market principles to save the economy from “collapse.”

“I’ve abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system,” Bush told CNN television, saying he had made the decision “to make sure the economy doesn’t collapse.”

Bush’s comments reflect an extraordinary departure from his longtime advocacy for an unfettered free market, as his administration has orchestrated unprecedented government intervention in the face of a dire financial crisis.

“I am sorry we’re having to do it,” Bush said.

HOWARD DEAN A CROOK? You are totally deranged, and miss the mark by so far, your supposition is totally ludicrous. Why don’t you stick to something real and verifiable, instead of blowing all of your credibility with suhc an insane comment!

  • benny

Saddam was executed due to his capture by the U.S. Maybe his spirit has possessed the inexperienced kid from Chicago. And he wants revenge.

  • dhelz

    lol! very funny.

  • stodgie

stephen fox, cut the crap! we don’t need your nasty little comments. and speaking of deranged, have you sought some help for those anger and lack of judgment issues you so clearly have. please note stephen i didn’ find it necessary to darken my type or cap.

Do you think the DNC is clean, no pay to play?

Actually, for some reason, a picture of Michael Jackson flashed into my mind.

Do we have a real live example of Obama’s adoring media — the ones who were supposed to vet the ONE — but obviously the media might have to do an honest days work.

Or is this just an Obot troll who is using another tactic?

  • pm317

I don’t know Texasdarlin’s site. I don’t go there and read. I am quoting NYPost here. That is the only Ted Kennedy quote in print (I first saw the quote from NYpost on Riverdaughter a week ago). There are not a lot of ways to react to it. We all have only one language, and only a few relevant words to describe our reaction.

This is what I wrote up in the post here and I don’t need TexasDarlin’s help to say what I feel:

What exactly is he saying? That lawmakers don’t do their job without the influence of name and money? Unlike Blagojevich, these people are not crass enough to buy or sell with money but they do want a senate seat for campaigning for Obama.

I think you owe an apology to me and others at NQ for your blanket unfounded accusation. We are all professionals in our primary life and we strive to convey news and opinion in our own way here.

  • http://ezinearticles.com/?Three-Basic-Parenting-Styles&id=744499 Northwest rain

Well both Michael Jackson and Obama has very similar noses before both decided to have their noses FIXED.

Check out one of Obama’s photos when he was a new hire at the law firm — he had a young Michael Jackson nose — compare that photo with any one of many of Obama taken recently — it’s obvious that he’s had his nose adjusted.

  • TeakWoodKite

    {Speaking for me only.}

    Plus one Pm317!
The numbers for the BO delegate trough is very interesting. One pac gives to another till the original intent of the is cloaked and obscured.

Pay to play, with a return on investment to rival any high flung hedge fund.

    Great read Pm317 thanks.

  • Hot Librarian

Stephen please send me a copy of your world -wide esteemed journal so I can wipe my bummie.

  • pm317

Thanks, Teak! Superdelegates gave up their duty and responsibility and negated the primary purpose of their existence in this election. Next to DNC and the media, they are big culprits here.

  • http://deleted Buzz Latte

Is it just me or does it seem like the air is hissing out of the HindenObamaburg?

Or is it flammable gas with which it will only take one singing match to completely go up in flames?

Who will do the honors? The Chicago Combine imploding in on itself? An individual such as Blago, Rezko, Levine, Obama himself? The pissed off public whose goal is to clean the corruption out of the DNC?

Definitely, Obama has lost his messiah status. He’s as fake as Jim Jones.

  • cc

I don’t want to wait either…I want justice served and this man kicked back to chi-town where he belongs.

  • noproblama

    You mean here in Scamerica?

  • http://baddemocrat08.wordpress.com csuzeq

I have found it ironic that the US removed Saddam from power and now we just put someone very Saddam like in power here. I have frequently mentioned that the Obama controlled press is like living in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

  • noproblama

    LOL!!!!

  • free Blago

Well, she does do a great Aunt Esther impression. That’s got to be worth something!

Had his nose adjusted ? That would explain why he holds his eyes to the sky. He’s proud of his nose. See my nose ? It’s presidential.

  • dannyb

    http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/2008/06/superdelgate-firewall-failed-clinton.html

“It was the sense among many superdelegates that they should follow the voters’ lead rather than loyalty to the Clintons that prompted many to come out on Mr. Obama’s behalf.”

Your conspiracy bribery explanation is fun, but it doesn’t really explain what happened.

  • pagar

The fact that someone printed something in -demcomwatch -doesn’t make it fact. The facts are that Obama sent a lot of money to superdelegates. What was the money for? A reward for doing something later sounds like pure bribery to me.

  • http://myfugue.wordpress.com Barrington

That makes NO sense, as Hillary won the popular vote. If they wanted to follow the will of the people, they would have voted as they were pledged to do, which would have been in line with the primary vote.

The regular delegates were threatened, and the superdelegates were bribed.

    Democracy my foot.

    Matt,
when you get a moment-please inform yourself…I will give you the benefit of the doubt in that you may have been grossly misinformed by the msm…

Learn about what REALLY happened with regards to ‘HOW’ Barack Obama was propped up because he was the pre-ordained Democratic party presidential candidate…HRC never stood a chance…

View the video’s released on August 9th 2008 by the Sam J Ervin Jr, former chairman of Watergate commission, library and museum in Morgantown NC. According to producers, the DNC (with the support of the MSM) has perpetuated a crime and fraud against the American voters by claiming Obama as the presumptive nominee.

  • bumpdown

This endless “bumping up” of old articles is tedious. Recycling old stuff that’s already been chewed over doesn’t make this blog any better. And it just calls attention to the fact that you’re short on new material.

A related complaint: posters who are so narcissistic that they quote their own previous comments in the same thread. There’s a reason nobody responded the first time. Get over yourselves.

  • bumpdown

An additional observation about the pointlessness of recycling old articles: this one got TWO new comments in the first seven hours after it was “bumped up…because it’s so good.”

If Hudgens were a stockbroker, the SEC would fine her for churning.
