In The Spirit of Diversity

At least in the world of satire. Once again, The Onion has come through with a funny piece. This is timely considering Obama’s slap in the face to the GLBT community (AND women) by picking Rev. Rick Warren, the homophobic anti-choice minister from CA, to do the invocation for Obama’s Inauguration. So after that additional (though not unexpected) insult by Obama, I bring you this current story:

America’s First Gay President Concludes Historic Second Term

WASHINGTON—President George W. Bush was unusually reflective in the final weeks of his administration, taking time during speeches and press conferences to look back on key decisions, expound on his legacy, and tout his role in paving the way for the nation’s first African-American president by serving eight years as its first openly gay president.

“I’m inspired by our great country’s willingness to look past the color of a man’s skin—or, in my case, his overt homosexuality—and elect him based on his ability to lead,” Bush told reporters following his meeting with president-elect Barack Obama on Nov. 10. “I’ve always been proud of my homosexuality, and I am so proud of the United States.”

Bush added, “Thank you, America, for taking a chance on an openly gay man from Texas: tight jeans, cowboy hats, and all.”

Well, Bush DID have that “Brokeback Mountain” look when he was out on the range…

Recalling how he worried during his first campaign that voters were not ready to put a gay man in the White House, Bush said he was “shocked and overjoyed” to win in 2000, and could not have done it without homo-sexual adviser Karl Rove, his strong base of closeted gay ultra-conservative supporters on the Christian right, and his “best friend” Laura.

“While I tried to be commander in chief first and a homosexual man second, I knew that everything I did would be judged through the lens of ‘America’s first gay president,’” Bush said during an interview with ABC’s Charles Gibson broadcast Dec. 1. “Looking back, my personal need to prove my man-hood definitely influenced my actions. The arrogant swagger, invading Iraq, my ruthless support of the death penalty—heck, even setting back gay rights 25 years—all of it seems so silly now.”

Former press secretary Ari Fleischer agreed, saying that Bush carefully cultivated his image as a masculine, simple-minded, heterosexual male in order to combat his insecurities about appearing weak before the international community.

“Believe me, sister, he overcompensated with a capital ‘compensated,’” Fleischer said. “But when the cameras stopped rolling and the podium was put away, he was just fabulous. We had a fabulous, fabulous time.”

While many will argue for generations about Bush’s political impact, all seem to agree that his presidency at last proved to a once-disenfranchised group that anything is possible.

“I never thought I’d see this in my lifetime,” said David Nevin, a 58-year-old homosexual living in New York. “And I probably won’t again because he was a terrible f***ing president who ruined it for all of us.”

Added Nevin, “What a bitch.”

I reckon that pretty much sums it up! “What a bitch!”

Back to reality for just a minute, and Obama’s Invocation choice, alert NQ reader, Athena the Warrior provided a link to an Advocate article about Obama picking Rev. Rick Warren, out of all the THOUSANDS of qualified ministers in this country, Rev. Rick Warren, the pro-Prop 8 and anti-choice minister, to be a part of his big to-do in DC. Lemme tel you what, the vast majority of comments were from people who were HOT under the collar about Obama’s treatment. Now, you know I think it is their own damn fault for ever thinking for one MINUTE that Obama cared one whit for the GLBT community. And not all of the people there voted for Obama. But many did, and they are already seeing the errors of their ways. So check out some of their comments. Very interesting.

And, to those who jumped on the Obama Bandwagon, like Joe Salmonese of the HRC, I say, SHAME ON YOU! Shame on you for not supporting the one candidate who walks the walk when it comes to the GLBT community. The one whose praises you sang just last year. That’s right, it was Hillary Clinton. Even if they did support her initially, then throw their hands up once Obama was declared the victor by the DNC’s RBC, I say shame on you for not standing up for JUSTICE, for what was RIGHT, and against playing fast and loose with the rules when it suited them. Same to all of those women’s groups who jumped on that bandwagon, too, and for what, to be cool? To get money? Because you got “caught up” in the moment?? Please. Spare me already. There is no excuse for ignoring the reality that was right in front of your faces – Obama’s anti-gay associates. Obama’s nuanced language over gay marriage. Obama’s continuing flip-flopping on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” And the list goes on. You chose to ignore the reality. You chose to back the man who has NOT backed you up over the woman who did. So now you are upset. Huh. Imagine that.

Sheesh. Enough of you people – I am too through with you all who thought that Obama was on your side. Enjoy the laugh about Bush. Hey, if you think about all of his little outfits he put on throughout the course of his presidency – the cowboy outfits; his flight suit; his wizard outfit with Boy Toy, Putin; elf clothes – oh, no wait – that was a JibJab production…You get my point. So, in that spirit, and in recognition of George Bush being the “first homosexual president” (who just bailed out Detroit), I leave you with this:

    NOT FUNNY!!

  • Rich

    agreed, not funny.

  • NoTrollZone

Acrtually, Obama will be the first gay president.
And he’s going about it just like a closeted, over-paranoid gay guy who’se trying to hide his sexual identity would. Surround yourself with homophobes and no one will think you’re gay.
Well, no one who doesn’t care to see the truth.
I’m sorry the first gay president has to be such a waste of carbon. It would have been nice to have someone who we could have been proud of.
I expect the AA community will be feeling rather
ashamed of choosing such a loser as the first black president as well.

    • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

NoTrollZone you are right. When this blows up it will set the AAs back 100 years and it will deeply destroy race relations for some. It’s a shame they just HAD to vote for the BLACK MAN….ANY black man, no matter how dysfunctional, creepy, criminal and fraudulent he is.

And he’s either stoned or drunk. I worked as a counselor — teenagers — and that’s how they looked when either stoned or drunk.

He’s also full of himself — and not in a good way either.

      YES! you are RIGHT 100%

OBAMA (OBUMMER) IS TRULY THE FIRST POORLY-CLOSETED GAY PREZ IN HISTORY–IN DENIAL AS WITNESSED BY RICKIE WARREN’S APPEARANCE….MICHELE’S ANGER AND FRUSTRATION….

    Funny as hell.

Wonder if the JibJab guys could put W’s face on the Village People cowboy?? He’d fit right in, and could probably keep up with the dance moves!

And yes, NTZ, I definitely think Obama will be our first gay, or at least bi, president. He just REEKS of internalized homophobia.

Yep – biracial and bisexual – there is some symmetry there!! :-)

You are right RRRAmy…Every friend I have in Chicago says “Duh…of COURSE he’s on the Down Low.” They laugh like you’re an idiot if you don’t know that. Wonder how the AAs who voted down gay marriage will feel when they find out Herr Fraudbama is on the DL. ROFLMAO.

      • Obama’s Boyfriend IS Jon Favreau

This explains why Obama doesn’t give a shit about women….or understand WOMEN’S HUMAN RIGHTS!

      • Kal

Actually, there is a strand of queer/race crit theory that tries to untangle these two concepts and how they play against/with each other. Check it out!

  • DanNY

Why do people want to hate on the gays?! I agree this is a homophobic article and its not funny.

Obama AND Bush are both a Piece of work – and shitty work at that.

    • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Huh? Homophobic how, exactly?? Maybe you missed all of the serious part abt actual, real homophobia.

And are you saying I am “hating on the gays”? That is laughable in too many ways…

The Onion article is SATIRE. Spoof. Not real. TO lighten things up a bit after the crapola of Obama and Warren (though anyone who had their eyes half open knew it was coming).

  • DanNY

Well its ridiculous – and to me linking the most hated President this country has ever had with the GLBT community doesn’t do anything for the gay community – funny to you or not. At a time when the country including Obama is again piling on the hate and throwing us under the bus. It is not funny or right to add insult to injury with a story of how Bush is a “Homosexual” too.

    I’m just saying.

    • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Well, I disagree, I reckon. I thought it was absurd enough to be funny.

The insult to injury is ALL Obama. HE is the one who has thrown the GLBT community under the bus, despite his rhetoric to the contrary. I can’t STAND Bush, but he has been pretty clear where he stands, and hasn’t deviated from that. Obama, OTOH, said enough to, clearly, get enough GLBT folks to fall in line for him, and not pay attention to how he really is. That is on him, and on those who allowed themselves to be bamboozled by his lies. All one needed to know was in clear site: Donnie McClurkin, James Meeks, Doug Kmiec, et al.

So, while I appreciate your current hurt, and I am sorry for that, I am not the least bit surprised by Obama’s choice with Warren. He has shown himself CONSISTENTLY to not care one WHIT abt anyone but himself, and will use whoever whenever it suits him. If anyone is truly surprised by that, they have not been paying attention. Hell, he threw his own GRANDMOTHER under the bus – you really thought he wouldn’t do that to the GLBT community?? REALLY????

So, yeah – I disagree – it is not an indictment of the GLBT community to satirize Bush as gay, for pete’s sake. IMHO, that is…

      • Screw-the-DNC

The Onion piece is satirical, no doubt about it, but it seems some people who actually thought Obama gave a damn about LGBT issues are taking it a bit personally. Lighten up.

Fine, you don’t think it’s funny – what do you think about RRRA’s commentary at the end? It should come as ZERO surprise to anyone who was paying attention that Obama would so readily throw us all under the bus.

I can’t stand Rick Warren, but I’ll at least give him this – he actually BELIEVES what he is saying, and he remains steadfast in his belief no matter the backlash. Obama? Not so much. His beliefs are up for sale to the highest bidder, and nothing is ever carved in stone.

Wonder what type of ointment would work best for the treadmarks on my back …

    • bemused

Actually–I think the point of the Onion satire is that it is an allegorical prediction about 4 years from now when someone else is looking back on his historicity, and members of his group are saying….we coulda had a V8. Think about parallels.

There were quite a few of those. Such a pleasure to read!!!

  • AF catfish

Also – don’t forget Rick Warren is a creationist!!

    http://www.thenation.com/doc/20081229/posner?rel=rightsideaccordian

Warren, a creationist, believes that homosexuality disproves evolution; he told CNN’s Larry King in 2005, “If Darwin was right, which is survival of the fittest then homosexuality would be a recessive gene because it doesn’t reproduce and you would think that over thousands of years that homosexuality would work itself out of the gene pool.”

    • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Holy toledo, AF. Well, it’s evident that Warren isn’t a scientist…

    • bemused

If you think about it from a population standpoint, instead of an individual one, a certain number of non-breeding helpers in a society could be very beneficial. It might also be valuable to have fewer men fighting over women; think of the violence from this cause. And of course there is the theory, whether a myth or not, that gay people are unusually creative. This would make homosexuality an evolutionary deadend for individuals, but boost social survival overall. Thus it cannot be disregarded as useful to evolution. Just a contrarian view. ;)

      • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

To this, “whether a myth or not, that gay people are unusually creative” you are going to get no argument from me! :-D

        Interesting comment, AF!

      • Screw-the-DNC

And then there is the fact that breeders always seem to come back to the sex argument. Are they unclear on the concept that lesbians can quite easily reproduce, since there are always so many willing no-strings-attached males available??

To predicate the theory/belief on the judeo-christian idea of marriage and monogamy is the essence of a closed-loop argument. It quite nicely rounds it up for them – and we can all just let them remain blissfully ignorant.

        • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

I definitely think it is the “ideal” for a child to grow up with happy, well-adjusted parents from both genders, the egg and sperm donors, because a) it helps provide role models from both genders and b) the kid is still going to wonder about daddy even if he literally was just a sperm donor.

Not saying that gays shouldn’t raise kids or get married, but it is certainly not a stone age belief that a kid would probably do best with good parents from the opposite genders, the ones whose DNA went into creating the child.

          • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

The problem with all of this nonsense about gay marriage, abortions, etc. is that we have such bigger problems right now. And yet again a bunch of crazy wing nut feminists came out and voted for an issue that’s a NON ISSUE because they couldn’t wrap their heads around a talented, successful woman like Palin who happens to love her special needs baby. Our country is getting ruined over these social nonsense issues when we have WAY MORE desperate things to attend to. I don’t give a damn if people have abortions, get married and raise kids if they are gay. More power to them. People as a rule are more productive members of society if their home lives are stable. Whatever it takes to make people happy members of their communities, great. It’s none of my damned business and I really don’t care. I just wish the social agenda would get off the table and stop dividing people. Enough.

    • Ferd Berfle

Wow, that is some slack-jawed junk “science”. Where do these dolts come from? Small wonder we do so poorly in math and science when compared to other countries.

  • Linda C.

The legal monogamous marriage idea is actually Roman Law and custom. The Church did not even get involved in marriage until the time of Charlemagne. In the early church history it was considered a civil matter not a religious one.

    • KathyNeocon

Huh?? Talk to the Israelites. Marriage is all over the Bible in text written well before the Roman Empire existed.

      • JozefAL

Yeah, a lot of PLURAL marriages, as well as concubinage, but, if you’ll read VERY CAREFULLY, there is not a single mention of a ritual FOR marriage. (The Bible has plenty of purity rituals for women wishing to return to the Temple after her menstrual cycle and plenty of information regarding circumcision, but not a single ritual for marriage is presented.)
There’s also discussion of prostitution and even incest is permitted under God’s very auspices (remember the story of Lot and his daughters?). But no reference to a marriage ritual. (Even the “wedding at Cana” where Yeshua performs his first “miracle” completely glosses over the ritual aspect of the wedding, completely focused on the turning water into wine. Incidentally, that “miracle” is also a large clue to Yeshua’s getting married since, by tradition, only the immediate family of the groom–not “guests”–is supposed to be responsible for the food and beverage. Why is Mary berating Yeshua into providing more wine unless she’s the mother of the groom? Just one of those things that make you go hmmm.)

    • Kal

And adoption is just a way to fake heteropronatalism. For those who could/can afford it.

  • DixieChkn

Unfortunately, many GLBT felt and expressed the same things about WJC after “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” but they eventually got over it (so to speak). Too many are going to try to Justify & Rationalize their decision to back BO in similar fashion at a later date. Kinda like a child “forgiving” an abusive parent or a DA victim “forgiving” the abuser. They want to believe (and desperately miss the Kool-Aid).

  • rolling_thunder

Satirical? Besides being confusing and boring, it was very oppressive, stereotypical and prejudiced. Portraying Bush as a gay man who needs to act macho because he’s really weak? Whaaaaaaat? The writer appears desperate for material and hey, it’s in style to make stuff up.

    • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Oh, c’mon – you don’t think the rainbow button on Bush’s lapel is funny?? Sheesh – tough crowd tonight! :-)

And if you meant ME in terms of “The writer desperate for material…” you couldn’t be more wrong. I had written an entire post already, and then saw this piece and thought it was pretty funny. Just seemed to me after the crapola from yesterday, a bit of levity might be nice.

Funny how more than a third of this post – where I actually talk abt the serious issues of Obama, Warren, et al, are lost. Glad that some of y’all are linking through to the Advocate and seeing some of the comments there, though. A whole lot of folks in the GLBT community are mighty upset abt the Warren thing. My point is that they should not have been surprised at all.

  • AnnieO

The Onion article was pretty dull.

  • yttik

I thought the Onion snark was pretty funny. Hey, you never know, some of the worst homophobes are sometimes gay.

Speaking of homophobia, Rick Warren was on TV protesting a bit too loudly about how he wants to hop into bed with every pretty girl he sees. Creepy! It was also sexist, I mean how is some teen age girl from his congregation supposed to feel after hearing that??! Then he went on to talk about his “base urges” and how he controls them so gays should have to do it too.

And geesh, lectures about incest and bestiality? Some of these anti-gay ministers are downright perverse! I mean ducks? WTH? Someone mentions the word “sex” and you think of ducks?? Is this some sort of strange free association exercise I’ve never heard of? Oh baby, quack for me?

LOL, sorry rant over. I’ll go scrub my ears out and stop trying to figure out all the poultry references.

  • TeakwoodKite

Rev Amy, you rock like a Sunday sermon “gone wild”… :)

This IS funny. Thanks. Ari …well can I say?

    Love the lapel pin too!

  • jimbob

oh here they go again … yes, yes, that Rick Warren is just such a meanspirited, nasty, hater … why just today, I saw him goosestepping around Washington in preparation for his speech to the Obamanation.

    • Strawberrybitch

Goosestepping? No, guys like Warrren are more into ripping off the poor, desperate and lonely in the name of Jesus Christ. So how much have you given to the good reverend?

    • WildChild

This is an interesting little twist in all that change we can beleive in. BOBO is taking the same old evangelic influence from the bush administration and changing it into the new envagelic influence of the obama administration. Pretty nifty eh?

  • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Wildchild and the Bitch…ROFLMAO…No, it isn’t about BUSH like you nuts think EVERYTHING IS. It’s about the fact that a major part of this country IS evangelical (translate AMERICAN) and Fraudbama perpetrated the lie that he was going to take a shit on evangelicals. Can you EVER leave BUSH out of your conversations? I have a cold sore? Did Bush do that too?

    • WildChild

Evangelics aren’t American. If they were they would respect my freedom of religion. They’re just bible thumping authoritarians who brought the money changers back in the temple when they allied themselves with the greed before country conservatives. Considering the founder of the Christian religion was executed for trying to throw the money changers out the temple, I’d have to say that the evangelic aren’t Christian either.

      • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Yeah Wildchild….we’ve been through this…NO ONE is “American” unless they subscribe to your wing nut shit. ROFLMAO. You’re the sad other side of Fraudbama. You want all of your so called COMMIE “liberal” freedoms, but no one else can have them. Evangelicals aren’t going anywhere. They founded this country. If you people don’t like it…Castro wants you. And, by the way, all Fraudbama is going to do is cause a massive swing to the left. People who have values. Too bad for you. Your atheism, hatred of America, etc. isn’t going to go over well in a few years.

        • WildChild

I never figured the US constitution to be wing nut. I just figure that if you’re Americian that you’ll respect the provisions in it. The evangelic don’t. The conservatives don’t. The progressives don’t. To find the people who do you have to be as far away from the wings as you can possibly get.

        • Ferd Berfle

You want all of your so called COMMIE “liberal” freedoms, but no one else can have them.

I would like everyone to have their freedom, so long as it does not affect mine. The old adage concerning rights and noses comes into play.

  • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

PS Wildchild…who exactly is it…the “evangelical” who has ruined your life? What FREEDOM of yours has an “evangelical” taken from you? Are you in prison? Do you walk the streets freely? Express yourself freely? So, what EXACTLY have a bunch of people who believe in Christ, etc. done to YOU? ROFLMAO. What a joke you people are.

    • WildChild

LOL are you talking about people who practice the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth or are you talking about the evangelic. Because the former make some of the best liberals this country has.

  • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Yeah right. You can get back to me in six months when you are really WTF happened to my freedoms? You have every freedom in the world, other than what you are making up. Your life is as free as it gets. Wait until that changes. You must be black or gay, so you can whine that you aren’t “equal” to everyone else or something. Get over it. We’re all equal…other than those who wallow in pity. What is it that your life is missing? I already asked you how some poor, pathetic Christian is harming you? What freedoms are you missing? You didn’t answer. Thought so. Guess you made that up.

    • WildChild

I see you’re still injecting those boogie men into the void.. LOL and then freaking out about them.

      • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Guess you just can’t answer that Wildchild…what exactly Christians are doing to ruin your life. Typical liberal crap. Let’s don’t discuss the economy, the war on terror, keeping America safe, etc. Let’s discuss our hatred for people who don’t use abortion for birth control, have values, and pray. Like I said, when you can tell me exactly why your life has been ruined by Christians, let me know.

        • WildChild

You must be confusing typical conservative crap with what i am. I never said any evangelic took away my freedoms. I said they don’t respect them. Read back a ways. You find those are the words coming from me. LOL not the little boogie man words that came from you as you defaulted to your standard conservative mode of hysteria. If you were really serious about wanting to talk about topics like those you mentioned you would have done so rather than regress to your rather typical slate of conservative accusations. LOL and it’s really funny how you still throw them around as your movement is lost in its dying cockroach moment. oh (LOL) we’re going to miss you.

but lets get back to your craziness. One of the reasons that the evangelic haven’t taken away my freedoms is because I’m a man. A couple of threads up you can find an example of their handy work. A woman with two daughters on their death bed. It’s one of the by products of the last twenty years of evangelic abomination. They’ve done everything they can to use the Christian text a a justification to make women second class citizens. And women are paying for that with their lives.

But then if women have the freedom to use abortion as birth control I guess that makes their slaughter OK with you sick conservative
          fucks.

So.. .what did you want to talk about regarding the economy?

          • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Wildchild…you are one sick man. I guess the Arabs who beheaded a woman last week are Evangelicals too? What a nut. Violence in this country is bad for many reasons. It’s not all directed towards women and it has nothing to do with religion. What a dumbazz argument. But you wouldn’t like my explanation for the violence in this country. It’s too logical, it involves liberal whiners who don’t want to put or keep violent criminals in prison, and I don’t blame Bush. Get a grip.

“My movement is losing it’s cockroach moment?” What in God’s name are you talking about? What kind of wing nut lingo is that? Wow…just…wow. What are you going to do when you get what you want? You and your pals destroy America?

            • WildChild

Actually they are. They’re just the muslim version of our evangelic abomination. But that should be an easy concept for you to grasp. You are no different in your defense of the evangelic and their faith based misogyny then are progressive women in their defense of secular misogyny. You only seem to mind men shitting on you when they’re not your men. When they are yours suddenly they grow a halo and and .. have values… and and(LOL)…. pray.

ROFLMAO You fringers are all alike. One standard for you. One standard for the rest of us…. and yours is always real lax.

    • elise

If Evangelicals support war, torture or violence of any kind, they are the biggest hypocrites in the country. Jesus Christ preached love, not hate. Turn the other cheek; love your enemy;Love your neighbor as yourself. Violence and intolerance are incompatible with Christianity.

      • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

Gee, Elise, I guess you think that when other countries, who don’t subscribe to “Christianity,” and subscribe to the destruction of America, nuke us we should just sit, take it, watch our loved ones die, our country be destroyed and go pray somewhere? ROFLMAO. I just love the wing nuts who think we shouldn’t defend our country. Why don’t you call one of the families who lost people on 9/11 and tell them that you think America should embrace the terrorists who did it. You’ll change your tune when it’s your family.

Bash Bush all you want. There haven’t been anymore bodies in the streets of America put there at the hands of foreign terrorists.

I suggest you take a stand to fight for your liberties, because I don’t believe Obama will. 535 members of congress write our laws. The president signs or vetoes those laws. Better keep an eye on congress too. By the time the laws get to the presidents desk it’s too late.

Congress made it easy for Bush to screw up. He was trying to be bipartisan and should have used his veto power at least a little bit. If 50 % of your income being taken from you is not enough, just sit back and bitch about how he stole the election, blablabla.

In case no one’s noticed congress seems not to care what their constituents want.

I have to agree with you insofar as Congress clearly is not doing what the people want. No doubt, that is why their approval rating is at 20%. AND, they are abt to get their raise – $4,700. I am not kidding.

No wonder they are so quick to bail out all of those poorly managed companies – they are cut from the same cloth: Fail? Get a raise! How abt a bonus?!?!? Sheesh.

And you are also right insofar as Congress is just as liable for the economic mess in which this country is. Bush didn’t do it all on his own. The Dems have been in control for two years now, Obama, Dodd, and others, were/are hand in glove with Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, getting tons of money from them…So, yeah, Congress does bear responsibility for the mess in which we find ourselves now. They failed in their obligations. They failed us. They failed to act as a check and balance. Their approval rating says it all.

That is a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy if there ever was one. There could be many reasons we haven’t been attacked since 2001 and Bush may not be one of them. Bush did us no favors at all in the “war” on terrorism. He went after the wrong enemy at the wrong time for the wrong reasons and missed the prime target.
