Below, a short excerpt from the beginning:

By HANS VON SPAKOVSKY

It’s easy to complain in the midst of a stressful holiday season. But my family has a unique remedy: We remember one special Christmas in 1919 that gave us the freedom and liberty we enjoy today. This will be the 89th anniversary of the year my father celebrated Christmas Eve deep in the snow-laden woods of Russia as he fled the Communist takeover of his homeland.

When I tell people that my father was an officer in the White Army who fought the Bolsheviks in the Russian civil war, they usually look at me with disbelief, because I am only 49. But he married and started a family later in life, after he lived through both world wars.

He had been an officer in the Russian Army in World War I; after the Bolshevik putsch he ended up fighting against them in the far north of Russia. In 1919 he was close to the Arctic Circle in the port city of Arkhangelsk, where at the beginning of the year, six feet of snow fell and the temperature was regularly 30 degrees below zero.

The Allies — the English, Americans and French — had put military forces in Russia, including in Murmansk and Arkhangelsk, in 1918. When they withdrew in September 1919, the White Army forces faced dire peril: Their source of supplies, including arms, was gone. Many regular soldiers deserted en masse to the Bolsheviks.

As the situation deteriorated, my father and his unit were surrounded. They fought until very few supplies remained. By December, their commander told them that they would soon be unable to continue to fight and that the Bolsheviks had promised that surrendering White forces would be freed and sent home.

But my father knew that the communists shot the officers they captured. The only way he could escape. …

Thank you for a wonderful Xmas story!

We just watched “DR. ZHIVAGO” the 1965 classic movie that everyone who wants to understand Russia at that troubled time, and understand the depth and feelings of these people, should run and rent the DVD!

      Thanks…..

YEP, THE SAME YEAR that my own living dad was born. Times were so tough, during the depression his mom died at age 35 from unknown causes.
    *************
ARE you afraid that the economic downturn could get out of hand? I mean, really out of hand? Well, don’t worry. The US Army is on the case – ready to handle unforeseen economic collapse and the rapid dissolution of public order in all or significant parts of the US. And you thought we were just dealing with a recession! . . unforeseen economic collapse, loss of functioning political and legal order, purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency and catastrophic natural and human disasters.

United We Stand Divided We Fall. We all need to be ready to stand for one another as Americans, as the common people who will be the one’s being opressed. After all, think about this, if they are taking the rights of a stranger, they are also taking the rights from all of us. If you saw a FEMA prison train in your town loading folks up, would you try to free them, or turn your back and walk away? I would hope as fellow citizens we would try to free those folks. It’s very sad to see the USA at a cross road that we would even have to ask what would we do if or when this or that happens.

“US economy in danger of of absolutely tanking”.-Joe Biden. Say it isn’t so Joe. And when? Jan 21 and through February?
95% of business owners have loans they cannot pay. Church’s are going default from lack of donations.

Rumbling continues in the distance–as I close my eyes hard and try to wake up–
It’s not working. I can’t wake up! Oh God!

Oh, and by the way, have a Merry Christmas!

Great story, thank you for sharing. I get to see our son, who has been in Iraq for a year, on the 26th, a surprise he doesn’t know he gets to see Mom. But for tonight he gets to put his year old son to bed, and sleep next to his wife once again. Mom gets to breathe, once again.

    Happy Holidays to all!

Wishes to everyone for a wonderful holiday. Thanks for sharing the story; it is great. I have spent time today listening to a history of New York City. They have been discussing conditions in the l830s.The apprentice system was breaking up and there was unrest and agitation to form labor unions.Inflation was a problem; there wasn’t a national currency so paper money was issued by banks. People often wanted specie rather than paper bills. There was rampant real estate speculation and unavailability of credit. The book is “Gotham.” Many of those events seemed similar to what is happening now. Some of the major crisises came to a head in 1837. This was a general history but it made me wish for a more detailed financial history of the time.
