In the rightwing version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol , Scrooge, the hero – has no awakening and continues to mock the poor throughout the story.
Ne’er do well Bob Cratchit gets fired, succumbs to drink and commits suicide. Tiny Tim, despite his handicap and age – goes to work as a chimney sweep and is horribly killed during a eighty hour week in a work related accident.
Mrs. Cratchit is tossed in the street and committed to an asylum where TB gets the better of her. The rightwing moral? The free market at it’s best. Survival of the fittest.
It’s their deep seated obsession to a return to the Gilded Age.

Oh now! Free enterprise is the answer! God knows programs like SCHIPS will lead us to socialism.

The only proof we need is how well the current private enterprise health care system is working in this country.

Odd, isn’t it, that none of the CNBC questioners asked those jokers on the stage in Michigan why they’re advocating a free-enteprise solution to health care when that’s what we’ve got and it clearly is failing, killing people, costing us FAR more than a program like Medicare (with its 3% overhead), etc.

P.S. Just heard that Bill Maher is describing Fred Thompson — who does look awful and ancient — as “tanned, rested, and in remission.” (That’s awful, but it’s also sick-funny.)

I have been following these stories. Disgusting is too mild a word. It infuriates me to see people who have worked all their lives to accomplish a modest ‘blanket of security’, only to see it wiped out in times when they need it most. Health care is soon to become one of the luxuries that only the rich can afford. And the public health system??? what a joke. We will be in deep trouble when the next big ‘flu’ hits… I wonder what the plan is besides calling on the blackwater crew to maintain order???

Did you listen to those jokers today on CNBC or MSNBC? Private enterprise can solve our health care cost problem! WOW!

And I suppose you’ve read about what the evil people at FreeRepublic and Michelle Malkin and others of their ilk are doing to the 12-year-old boy and his family — the boy who gave the Democratic radio address last Saturday about how the SCHIPS health care system saved his life and gave him critical care. Those monsters are stalking the family and have posted the famiy’s home address on their Web site.

(The last time I went to FreeRepublic was about three-plus years ago. I saw three threads — with LOTS of discussion in each thread — on why the right of women to vote should be taken away, and it so frightened me that people in this country could think like that that I could never bear to go there and check them out again.)

Yes, Susan it is a great diary, and so true. I fought over insurance coverage for years, after I was injured. They have no mercy. I remember people’s jaws dropping to the floor when I told my story; many still never believed until it happened to them. We NEED universal health care. Are you familiar with presidential candidates plans on this issue?

This is a HELL of a diary on health insurance, and it’s scary. It’s also well-documented. And it begins with the story of Kos’s current health problem — terrible abdominal pain that’s been going on for some time. He needs a CT scan but Blue Shield is denying it. The diary lists more terrible stories — even paralyzed people who can’t get wheelchairs, etc.

NSA types could probably help. Look on their signals prior to his taking office, in the campaign run-up and before actual swearing in on the Bush V. Gore decision. Follow the Money. Aspen Institute.

Hoosierhoops, being a born and bred American citizen from the Mid-Atlantic, when I was living in Texas, I often questioned my native Texas neighbors about why so many dis-honest things went on in that state. And I always received the same answer from every one of them: “These kind of things happen all over the USA and Americans are the same everywhere”. This from the mouths of people who have never been outside of the state and who will tell you they are “TEXAN” when you ask about their heritage.

Macaca I don't know how Fred Thompson's naming of former Virginia Sen. George Allen as one his three campaign co-chairs can be seen as anything other than a nod and a wink to a certain brand of racially-charged Republican voters. ... read all.

It was the first thing that occurred to me because what other reason could Thompson have for appointing that loser?

Let me know if it keeps happening. What it might be: Moses is working on the coding for the comments. As if politics doesn’t enter into enough of our lives, politics has complicated the world of WordPress blog software too. Moses told me that the person who created the code for comments got in a huff about something, and split. Can’t we all just get along?! (Obviously that’ll never happen! I’m laughing.)

HUGS to you and your family … I think about your son every day. It doesn’t help him, but it reminds me just how personal this war is for so many families.
