I have one, a rescue, and he's wonderful. I adore Akitas! Have had 3 of them in my lifetime and adore the breed. My last one was Yoshi, who lived to be 11 1/2 yrs. I grieved for that dog for a year, and he'll be the last Akita for me. I have 5 dogs now, but no other Akita could live up to him in my heart. Kids loved my akita and always wanted to hug him; he was like a big gentle-ben-huggy-bear, and he was always gentle with them. They are territorial and need socialization with other animals when young, but they are quite protective of, and loyal to, their loved ones. In Japan, they're historically quite beloved as family pets and baby-sitters, too. No one would dream of kidnapping or harming a child being protected by the family Akita!
