I have friends who are either teaching at, or have retired from, universities. To a person, they are pro-That One. I love them dearly but they are so misguided. That is a wonderful program which helps citizens become knowledgeable about specific issues in foreign affairs so that they can become effective advocates for what they believe should happen. It is a non partisan effort that uses foreign policy experts, to devise informative discussion booklets for local chapters to use in their discussions. Many chapters have speakers on topics being studied and there is a PBS show dealing with the chosen topics. I have found the meetings to be very informative and the discussions thought-provoking instead of the usual simplistic drivel that masquarades as political debate in our society.

The League of Women Voters is another group that studies issues, international, national and/or local in depth. Each local group chooses what to focus on and also has access to the national organization.

In both of these groups members vote on positions only after they have been studied. I was involved in our local chapters investigation of health care in the early 90′s. After studying the facts, we presented it to our local chapter, which then voted on what kind of health care system they wished to see. If this kind of thing happened on a larger scale, our democracy would function much better. Instead the sqeeky, uninformed wheels get the grease, so to speak.

I wonder how authentic that photo is. I recall a photo of him, was it a year ago, in Hawaii, in the same attire, and he was quite thin, little muscle tone with a “tummy”.
