Maybe Resistance To Camelot Is NOT Futile? – Updated

Oh dear. The NY Times this article recently, Resistance to Kennedy Grows Among Democrats. Hmm – seems it is not as done a deal as we have been led to believe by the MSM:

Resistance is emerging among Democratic officials against Caroline Kennedy as she pursues Hillary Rodham Clinton’s seat in the United States Senate, with Gov. David A. Paterson bristling over suggestions that her selection is inevitable, according to his advisers, and other leading Democrats concerned that she is too beholden to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

The governor is frustrated and chagrined, the advisers said, because he believes that he extended Ms. Kennedy the chance to demonstrate her qualifications but that her operatives have exploited the opportunity to convey a sense that she is all but appointed already. He views this as an attempt to box him in, the advisers said.

“You have people going around saying, ‘Oh yeah, it’s a done deal,’ ” said one of the advisers, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the selection process and did not want to anger the governor. “The quickest way to not get something you want is to step into somebody’s face.”

I had been wondering how Gov. Paterson was responding to all of the pressure he has been getting to give Kennedy Schlossberg Clinton’s seat. Now I know:

The governor’s frustration follows reports last week that Kevin Sheekey, a top deputy to Mr. Bloomberg who has been advising Ms. Kennedy, had called a labor leader and told him that Ms. Kennedy was going to be senator, “so get on board now,” and that a member of Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s staff was helping Ms. Kennedy reach out to unions.

It was not clear on Tuesday whether the governor’s reaction would seriously damage Ms. Kennedy’s chances to win the appointment or if it merely reflected Mr. Paterson’s desire to regain control of the selection process after Ms. Kennedy’s very public political debut.

But Ms. Kennedy’s ties to Mr. Bloomberg’s political team and her waffling over whether she would support a Democrat in next year’s mayoral race appear to be angering some Democrats. On Tuesday, Sheldon Silver, the Assembly speaker, became the most senior elected official in the state to say that that Mr. Paterson should not select Ms. Kennedy to the Senate seat.

“If I were the governor, I would look and question whether this is the appointment I would want to make, whether her first obligation might be to the mayor of the City of New York rather than the governor who would be appointing her,” Mr. Silver said during an interview on WGDJ, an Albany radio station.

Mr. Silver has long had a testy relationship with Mr. Bloomberg, fueled by battles over mayoral initiatives like congestion pricing.

I think I would be looking long and hard, too. Isn’t the point of a US Senator to represent the people from the state that sent her/him? It seems from Kennedy Schlossberg’s feet dragging on answering questions on, well, EVERYTHING, that maybe she does not have the best interests of New Yorkers in mind. Trying to steamroll her way in without a willingness to divulge any pertinent information, including whether or not she would support a Democratic mayoral candidate seems to be sticking in a few people’s craw.

As you can probably guess, Kennedy Schlossberg’s people have something to say about the appearance of this freight train:

A spokeswoman for Ms. Kennedy declined to comment. Ms. Kennedy’s advisers, speaking anonymously because they did not want to inflame the situation further, rejected any suggestion that they had portrayed her selection as inevitable and insisted that they had been respectful of the governor’s desire for a decorous selection process.

The criticism over her bid has also frustrated those advisers, who feel that Ms. Kennedy has been whiplashed by assertions that she is at once protected and presumptuous.

Both the governor and Ms. Kennedy’s advisers appear to have been thrown, in part, by Ms. Kennedy’s overwhelming personal celebrity.

Oh, dear – how could we have possibly gotten the idea that Kennedy Schlossberg was pushing for this when the poor thing is being whiplashed by all these reports? I mean, she couldn’t have had anything to do with it, could she? Well, maybe if she put down the phone:

Ms. Kennedy made dozens of calls to elected officials and other leaders to build interest in her candidacy, and many of those with whom she spoke call her thoughtful and self-effacing.

But her refusal to say over the weekend whether she would back a Democratic candidate next year, when Mr. Bloomberg will seek re-election as an independent, set off intense reaction among some in the party.

A follow-up statement — in which her spokesman, Stefan Friedman, said that Ms. Kennedy “fully intends to support the Democratic nominee” — did not assuage those concerns.

Moreover, her ties to Mr. Bloomberg’s operatives have aroused suspicions among Democrats and labor officials that she would be beholden to the mayor. Ms. Kennedy hired the consulting firm Knickerbocker S.K.D., which includes Mr. Bloomberg as one of its biggest clients.

Those suspicions appeared to be compounded by a comment Mr. Bloomberg made on Monday defending Ms. Kennedy and suggesting that, though the choice was Mr. Paterson’s, the governor should move quickly to select a replacement for Mrs. Clinton, who is expected to be confirmed next month as secretary of state.

“We didn’t tell him to hurry up on term limits,” said another Paterson adviser, referring to Mr. Bloomberg’s move this fall in which he marshaled votes on the City Council to nullify a city referendum so that he could run for another term.

Oh, boy – seems like a whole lot more is going on in the Empire State than originally met the eye:

In a conference call on Tuesday, Mr. Paterson, who was traveling, declined to address Mr. Silver’s or Mr. Bloomberg’s comments. But he reiterated that he had made no selection and would not do so until Mrs. Clinton was confirmed.

“What I’m trying to keep away from is lobbying, coercion and distracting information,” he said. He added later: “I don’t feel rushed by any of this process. I have said from the very beginning what I thought the right way to do this would be.”

Mr. Silver also praised several other potential appointees to the Senate seat, including Andrew M. Cuomo, the attorney general. Should Mr. Paterson pick Mr. Cuomo, the Legislature would be responsible for choosing his successor, and Mr. Silver would have by far the most influence over that choice.

A spokesman for Mr. Silver declined to say whether the speaker had consulted with Mr. Paterson before speaking publicly about Ms. Kennedy.

Even some of Ms. Kennedy’s potential rivals for the seat expressed some sympathy for her quandary.

“Any true Democrat loves Caroline Kennedy,” said Thomas R. Suozzi, the Nassau County executive, who has said he is also interested in the Senate appointment. “I think the way that her handlers and strategists are pushing her and trying to box in the governor is damaging the reputation of someone that we all care about.”

Oh, yes, poor unqualified, inexperienced, secretive Caroline – what difficult spot for her to not get exactly what she wants without having any publicity. Must be hard to be her to be asked questions, and for people to want ANSWERS to those questions before she can be considered for a US Senate seat…Poor little thing. Ahem.

And here’s a question: if she and/or her handlers were NOT trying to give the impression that this is a done deal, why is it we hear about few other potential replacements for Clinton? Nope – it’s been pretty much Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg all along, except for a mention here or there of Andrew Cuomo, which, of course, means they have to mention how he was married to Caroline’s cousin. So that’s it, then, just those two?? Um, no. There are more, of course. But somehow, someway, all the focus has just been on CAROLINE. Can’t imagine how that happened. Ahem.

Bottom line, glad to hear that Gov. Paterson is a little frustrated at the pressure, and that other Democrats might be taking another look. Kennedy name or no, it helps to have some experience. Especially since the PEBO doesn’t have any…

    - Gall isn’t a strong enough word to describe this woman. She really thought that she would just glide through all of this, attempt to fill Hillary’s shoes just like that? CK reeks of entitlement. Secretive about her finances, never worked a full-time job, now we are finding out that she’s taking credit for charity work that was put together by someone else…. kinda reminds me of That One putting his name on legislation while someone else did all of the work.

She campaigned against Hillary and now she wants to take her place?? HRC had so many sharks around her this year, I can’t imagine all of the things she had to deal with.

I hope Gov. Paterson shuts CK down.

also: So we saw CK out there promoting Obama, now we see that she had political aspirations of her own, I just wonder what Shriver wants.

She wants to be first lady. Remember, we have eliminated the constitutional requirement that the prez be a natural born citizen.

I have said many times that the reason the Repubs don’t care if Obama is eligible and why Obama supported the Senate in deeming McCain eligible is to make way for President Schwarzengger.

I want to believe you, but the PR against the Bloomberg perception is in full swing (NY Post had a cover yesterday) so, I wouldn’t bet on it.

But she even had lunch with Al Sharpton. How can she be denied the seat after that?

  • C.S.

Doesn’t anyone see the irony here of Soertoro/Obama making lists for his vacated Senate seat as if no one else had a right to decide who the governor would/could/should choose to fill it and Senator Clinton literally being pushed out a her U. S. Senate seat before the Obama man can legally take office and appoint anyone to anything just to make way for a recluse because of…why make way for Mrs. Schlossberg?

Over the years she has made perfectly clear that she did not wish public attention, participated in no political activities until her daughter told her to support the candidate Obama. Is she also going to tell her how to run the State of New York?

But she isn’t being put forward as a replacement for Senator Clinton based on her father’s achievements (Soertoro/Obama couldn’t be further from Kennedy’s ideology) or comparable accomplishments to Senator Clinton’s. She is being “paid for services rendered” to the Obama campaign the very same way that Governor Blagojevich was promised. Unfortunately, this quid pro quo is getting out of hand. We need change all right, but what needs changed is the political party that allowed this madness to coalesce!

Caroline does not have a sister. Caroline and her late brother John were the only two children of JFK and Jackie to reach adulthood.

    • http://rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Quite right – I MEANT to say COUSIN. I’ve fixed it now – thanks.

And C.S. – excellent summation. Obama is nowhere CLOSE to JFK, and it makes me ill that he has been portrayed as being anything like him, or MLK, for that matter…

She IS a horrible choice – heck – if being educated is the only criterion these days, I think any number of us could just step right in there.

      Ahem.

      • susan

        RRR Amy:

I totally agree – every time obama is compared to JFK, MLK, Lincoln, etc….. it annoys me so much! I think the reason he gets compared to so many great people is that he’s nothing, empty of ideas (that he didn’t steal from Hillary or somebody else), convictions (that he doesn’t flip/flop on) or any morals at all (as evidenced by his pals from Chicago).

And seriously, is anybody else wondering if his obsession with President Lincoln is beginning to border on a psychological disorder?

        • IndieDogg

BEGINNING!? to border on a psychological disorder???!!!

Nay, I say begun, redone and done.

And you are even more right on the other point you make. Historians study Presidents for years to compare and contrast them one to the other. None of them has been a clone of another.

But, as you say, you have to BE something before you can NOT be something else (does that make as much sense as it was meant to?).

Now we have a “to be” President (not yet inaugurated) who is Abraham Lincoln, JFK and MLK with a little Ghandi and some (wanna be) P Diddy all mixed together in one amazing package.

I’ll say this. If that were true, it would be amazing. As it is, it is only sad and frightening. I see an image of the rubes outside the tent, buying snake oil and paying a nickel to see the Man With Five Heads — Lincoln, Kennedy, King, Ghandi & P Diddy.

Just don’t look at the man behind the curtain, assuming there is a man behind the curtain.

        • http://baddemocrat08.wordpress.com/ obamastolemyboyfriend(akaCsuzeq)

Oh, Obama has a psychological disorder alright. It’s so obvious I just don’t see how professional psychologists aren’t screaming to someone. He scares me. Mentally ill leaders bring much harm. American voters have signed America’s death warrant!

The only comfort I have in Obama comparing himself to Lincoln and Kennedy is that those Presidencies didn’t end very well. Obama, careful what you wish for is all i can say!

    • http://truthisgold.blogspot.com truthisgold

Thank god for small favors. She has enough cousins to populate the entire Senate singlehandedly. We do NOT need another secretive, elitist, know nothing, recluse in there. 40 years of fairy tale illusion is waaaay too much of an imposition on the American people. Being a New Yorker, I will be DAMNED if I will sit idly by and watch another useless usurper weasel their way into the Senate without even running for election. I am not about to allow an Obamaton shove their way into office the same way HE did, not once but TWICE. Anyone who supported a man who NEVER WON AN ELECTION AGAINST A VIABLE OPPONENT does not have sufficient judgment to be my senator.

  • lightacandle

Maybe Princess Caroline should first have to submit to having a life-size cardboard figure of herself GROPED by Obama’s chief speechwriter, Jon Favreau.

I believe the Gov’s wife is a Realtor who handled the sale rather than an attorney.

Government officials are not allowed to take bribes or gifts and unless the Obamas can produce receipts for rent he could be in trouble for this nefarious plot before he became a Senator, while he was a Senator and after the Oath to “protect and defend” the Constitution. We’ve investigated many elected officials over the past few years and more than a couple are now in jail. Time for the IRS to investigate the shady dealings of mystery man Soertoro, aka Obama. Now that would be a “legacy, first “president” to do time for fraud.

My heart is breaking for poor little Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. Why shouldn’t she just be able to walk into Hillary’s Senate seat without answering any questions about anything. After all her last name is Kennedy, isn’t it?

Oh no, actually she has always used the name Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg as far back as I can remember, since she got married. Could she possibly be trying to exploit the glorious Kennedy name? Oh, she could not possibly be doing that, could she?

And I have a question. Why don’t we hear anything about her husband? Is he a stay at home dad or what? Didn’t Bill Clinton have to reveal everything about his donors? But we don’t hear one word about Mr. Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg. I am assuming he is a rich guy, not a truck driver or a or a mail carrier, right?

  • Steve1

Hey the crap they pulled on Hillary Clinton. CK deserves all the heat she’s getting. How dare anyone question the Kennedy’s, they are entitled! She thinks she owns the governor. Who is in a tight spot…OH, dear-what to do? President Clinton should step in and clean up this entire mess. Kennedy has no experience-what qualifications? I respect Kennedy family commitment to progressive policies and the service which they have given, but Caroline is is not entitled to public office. She has to demostrate a will, policies and experience, plus leadership! I guess with an inexperience election of a charalaton as Barry Soetoro as prez, Caroline thinks she can do the same!

    • Steve1

Only completely unqualified males can get this sort of appointment.

She is a woman so it won’t happen, not easily anyway.

I’m not a fan of Clan Kennedy but I am also not a fan of the uneven playing field in American politics.

Also I see that word “unlikeable” flying around.

Its not a requirement to be likeable to be in the Senate but it sure is something folks love to say about females in politics.

Heck even the dictionary has a great example to clarify:

    unlikeable (adjective)
difficult or impossible to like; “a disagreeable and unlikable old woman”

    • Ferd Berfle

Tell that to the poser PEBO.

  • Docelder

I don’t get the assertion that because your uncle had the senate seat that somehow it entitles you to it. Do we really have a democracy anymore? or, has it become some from of a “hopey changey” oligarchy? Sometimes I wonder as of late.

    • susan

Docelder, it only gets worse. If you can believe it (and I try not to), here in MA Ted Kennedy’s wife Vicky’s name is already being floated as a possible replacement for him when he leaves office (during his term, so as to allow the Gov. to appoint her, no doubt)! I’m hoping all this Kennedy flap in NY will help us avoid such a farce here in MA. Here, like in NY, there are so many other people (who we ACTUALLY ELECTED) that are so much more qualified to fill any vacancy.

      • jvsp

You can contact Gov. Paterson via the link below,
http://www.ny.gov/governor/contact/index.html letting him know what you as a concerned citizen or NYer, former NYer, a possible donor (?), concerned citizen, someone who is thinking of moving to NY (I don’t know why anyone would want to. As a resident I don’t recommend it), or for whatever reason, etc. think about the idea of her majesty C. Kennedy being installed as Sen.

Personally, if Gov. Paterson does install her, I will be working to see that he is defeated when he comes up for election. Given his recent tax proposal and the difficult quagmire he faces as governor…

The idea of another Kennedy besides CK being installed is revolting. Please no, MA!

    • C.S.

Do we really have a democracy anymore?

I though that it was obvious from the 2008 sham election we just went through where votes were taken away from other candidates and given to Candidate Obama to boost his delegate count.

And then there was the 2004 election where Conyers asked for an investigation before Congress confirmed Bush.

And the 2000 election decided by the Supreme Court and the 1965 Civil Right Commission Report on the Florida election that was referred to Attorney General Ashcroft for prosecution.

I’d say three strikes and democracy is out!

  • lightacandle

Princess C.K. Schlossberg has never run for any public office and MOST of what she has done in life has been because her famous parents’ names opened doors for her.

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg has not proposed or generated support for legislation or succeeded in getting legislation passed at even the town level of government, and I certainly do not think being ultra rich and raising three children means she has any political know-how. She has served on a lot of boards where people routinely defer to her because of her parents.

I do not think writing a book about her mother’s favorite poems, “The Best-Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis,” is any sort of political experience.

Ms. Kennedy Schlossberg got her first job, as an intern at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, because the executive director there was a personal and social friend of Jacqueline Kennedy’s. It was a favor to Jackie.

And Ms. Kennedy Schlossberg’s books got published only because her mother had worked for many years in the publishing field and that had opened doors for Caroline.
Having the path in life smoothed for one does not prepare one for the rough and tumble of political life.

Caroline: Run for some public office FIRST before thinking you are ENTITLED to have a United States Senate seat handed to you.

Conservative columnist Matt Towery provides some interesting info. on why the Kennedys initially supported Obama. He claims that they didn’t really feel that he would win but rather that he would stop or at least slow Hillary’s ascent so someone else could win. Seems like they were jealous that the Clintons would become the heirs to their throne with the Democratic Party and they would have not of that. If you’re interested in the entire column go to:
