Jordan’s Open Thread

Send your positive thoughts to Jordan, who is Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy’s beloved horse. He has colic, and so far isn’t responding well to treatment. Jordan is 22 years old, so quite naturally Amy is concerned for him. She reports that the veterinarian has given him quite a few drugs, and he’s a bit out of it. We wish Jordan well, and are sending electronic BIG hugs to our beloved Amy! (Read more about Jordan here at Amy’s blog.)

    Reverend Amy, I am thinking of Jordan and his speedy recovery. I had a beautiful quarter horse years ago who also experienced bouts of colic, so I understand the stress you are going through. Jordan is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing his picture. cc

    Thanks, CC! I appreciate your kindness, and sharing your experiences. The vet said he thinks Jordan may also have had ulcers (possibly still does), which made tubing him to give him fluids a bit difficult. He’s going on Horsey Previcid for that…

    Btw, Jordan is a Thoroughbred/Standardbred, and is 16.2hh. We got him from another equine vet who rescued him from an abusive owner. He was a hunter/jumper before he came to us (he is now retired).

    We’re off in a few minutes to go walk him again…Thanks again for the good wishes!

    i was at a ranch yesterday where the family keeps horses. one of them loves people more than his fellow horses. he was a delightful fellow. i understand he has the run of the place and often shows up at the back door looking for carrots. he and jordan both sould like delightful creatures of god. here’s wish you and jordan well rev amy.

    Amy, I send healing love and my kitties Maxwell and Jack send gentle paw taps to Jordan. He is absolutely gorgeous! My two fur guys are old and and sick so I understand the stress level treating ill companion animals. It’s hard work but the love that is returned is always worth it.

    Ah, thanks folks! I really appreciate it. Jordan has been a real gift. I had to give up riding long ago (crappy knees), but I just love horses. He brings so much joy to our lives. Since he is prone to joint pain, we’re a good pair. I get to groom him, pet him, and give him treats, which he LOVES. And he gets to live out his retirement with other retired horses, and his beloved pet pony. Life is good!

    And yes – the woman who runs the stables takes exceptional care of the horses. She got up every two hours during the night to walk Jordan – that’s the kind of person she is…And she made him alfalfa tea – twice.

    Reverend Amy, I will be praying for Jordan he is a beautiful boy…I did notice that he is around a lot of sand…we used to live in Florida and I had a couple of my horses colic every once in a while my farrier told me it was the sand and to make them a warm mush once a week with wheatbran and a scope of dry with there evening meal for the rest of the week…the sand clings to the bran and passes normally. They never had colic again. Thank God for knowledgable farriers. If you chose to try this I hope it works out for Jordan. Best Wishes!

      Good eye – yes, he is around a lot of sand, but gets monthly “sandblasting” (the first week of the month). The vet last night checked for sand levels to see if that was causing the problem, but it was minimal…

      As of our last visit (just got back), no real change. Our wonderful stable owner had just made him more “tea,” and will check him every 3 hrs overnight.

      BuzzLatte, LOVE the name of your kitten! I do hope she recovers fully from her ailment. And awesome abt the Reiki treatment! That is really something! Cool!

    RRRA – I’ve lit a candle for your Jordan. Our little “Wednesday” (as in ADDAMS), the kitten with the surly attitude is recovering from a cold-type virus after a trip to the vet and some distance reiki from a friend who is a reiki master. Actually, Wednesday is more active after her reiki session…it’s a trip!!

    Reiki might help Jordan…

    RRRA: As the owner of a 26-yr. old horse,(who still thinks he’s 6), I know full well what you are going through. My prayers are for Jordan’s complete recovery. Heck, Jordan is a youngster compared to my Prince, so I know Jordan will get well.

      RRRA, I forgot to mention that my 26-yr. old Prince has gone through two surgeries to remove bladder stones and was laid up for a full year after tearing 90% of the tendon in his right hind leg. He is on a special diet to try to prevent any more bladder stones.

      Prince sends a nicker Jordan’s way.

    My horse whisperer gave me the following advice:

    Many causes for colic. It can be very serious. Do you know if they caught it early? Tubing and getting mineral oil into system so that bowel cleared is traditional treatment, unless twisted intestine. Where are they in the treatment process?

    I will pray that they have caught it early enough. What are the gut sounds? Still active? They usually start w pain reliever and walking to see if movement will activate bowel. Then move to tubing w oil. If these are not working, not good. At age 22 surgical intervention on this horse is still possible, but risky.

    My horse whisperer is my dearest childhood friend who has among other four-legged friends: numerous Arabians, a collection of other horses including horses she has rescued from death, rescue dogs, and cats.

    She quit practicing law, bought a mill and now internationally sells specialty horse feed and has several mills. She developed the feed to save a blind mare who wouldn’t eat.

    A month later, the blind mare delivered a healthy foal.

    I grew up with horses as did many of my friends. One of my friends is a horse trainer who also has Jack Russell terriers, another is seriously into dressage and has an empty house where she lets cats live, another girlfriend is a barrel racer – quarter horses, and we used to “round up the cows and donkeys” at a ranch her parents owned, but never visited.

    My heart goes out to you. They are such innocents. And Jordan is so handsome. I’ll keep him in my prayers.

    Have you considered probiotics for Jordan?

    Natasha Trenev at Natren has formulated beneficial bacteria specifically for horses. Could improve digestion. Certainly will do no harm.

    We have had near miraculous results with probiotics specific for our cats and dogs.

    This may sound weird but Chihuahua’s help with human colic. Old folk remedy but I have seen it work miracles, just bringing one into a room with a suffering child. Something in the dander. Don’t know if bring a chihuahua near the horse would help but it might be worth a try. Best wishes for Jordan!
