(bumped up from Wednesday morning)
George Soros, maybe? The problem in appeasing these activist groups is that there are profoundly serious intelligence-gathering and counterterrorism implications, and extraordinarily time- and energy-consuming legal tasks and confusing agency expectations behind what Obama is suddenly proposing that could suck all the oxygen out of his presidency and the [...]

Mind you, I received the following from a downcast Obama supporter and longtime pal who worked ’round the clock for Barack. Hey, we tried to warn these people, didn’t we, that he does not care about, or know about, policy. They dismissed us as racists and Republicans. No. Our candidate, Hillary Clinton, promised to end [...]

I’ve decided, when possible, to write up an update for all of you on Hillary’s and the State Department’s most interesting and newsworthy events, including, below the fold, news about Envoy Richard Holbrooke’s progress in Pakistan as well as Hillary’s remarks on her vision for Envoy Holbrooke’s role. Below, we’ll also discuss Secretary Clinton’s important [...]

(Bumped up from yesterday by Bronwyn’s Harbor. Hey, Josh Marshall, since you’re not content being a leading liberal blog owner so now you’re hangin’ with all of Barack Obama’s friends like Bernardine Dohrn — and we dig it because, well, you were never the cool kid in class, but now you see a chance, and [...]

Major Eric Egland, a major in the United States Air Force, former lead intelligence specialist in Iraq focusing on terrorist networks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), in Allies Obama Overlooked, once again reminds us of Obama’s uninspiring inexperience. He even says that Obama wouldn’t have overlooked our allies if he had held just one meeting, [...]

Rebecca Traister this week writing in Salon thinks she knows how 18 million people think:
The attack of the PUMAs, or a dozen reasons why Clinton voters are still too angry to come home.
If you’re a dedicated Democrat — or perhaps even one of those fed-up Republicans we’ve heard about — there’s a good [...]

Upon being discharged from the Navy, John F. Kennedy worked briefly for the Hearst newspapers covering the newly formed United Nations. He wrote to a friend from San Francisco:
When I think of all those gallant acts that I have seen…it would [...]

Hello No Quarter Readers–
Here’s expressing my deepest gratitude for your Larry’s and your support for National Security Drone. I have striven to produce the strip once a week or so, but now I must move over to a monthly production schedule.
I have a great excuse: two book projects! I am in the process of [...]

Powell’s UN Fiasco: Fresh and Festering
By Ray McGovern
Yesterday was a difficult day for Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. It was hard to celebrate the fifth anniversary of our first corporate memorandum, a same-day critique of Colin Powell’s Feb. 5, 2002 UN address, when we could not escape the reality that this speech greased [...]

I keep thinking about those early December CBS Evening News candidate interviews I mentioned. Each was asked which country scares them the most. Sen. Clinton correctly responded, “Pakistan” (CBS video). Sen. Obama said “Iran,” (CBS video).
It hit me that Obama has drunk the Bush/Cheney/Neo-con “Kool-Aid” exaggerating the threat of Iran — like he [...]

“This is a time for leadership, not politics. Senator Obama’s campaign seems to believe that Senator Clinton’s actions led to the tragic events in Pakistan. This is an incredible and insulting charge. It politicizes a tragic event of enormous strategic consequence to the United States and the world, and it has no place in this [...]

A boyish, inquisitive face with an innocent look peered out from the Washington Post’s lead story on torture. It was well groomed, pink-shirted John Kiriakou, a CIA interrogator who could just as easily pass for the local youth minister. …

Michael Mukasey, the recently confirmed attorney general, wrote “A FISA fix,” an op-ed for today’s Los Angeles Times. It’s worth reading in full, but includes these troubling statements:
… Until recently, our surveillance efforts were hampered by the unintended consequences of an outdated law, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, … [...]

I’m sure you’ve also had this experience: You watch a candidate or official make remarks on television, and you get a sense of what they’re saying, but the media ends up reporting an entirely different interpretation, and you wonder if you’re the only person who heard the candidate/official as they intended to be heard!
The [...]

We’ve seen the decimation of critical federal agencies like the DOJ and agency missions of the FDA, CPSC, and EPA (see TPM today on Bush letting polluters off the hook). But the FBI? Somehow this important Seattle P.I. story fell through the cracks of the blogosphere on Sept. 27, but you need to [...]

Imagine the climate adjustment required for that solitary Icelandic soldier stationed in Iraq. The member of the “Icelandic Crisis Response Unit” (Iceland doesn’t have a “formally constituted military”) is actually a media representative in Baghdad, but Bush used him to bolster his B.S. claim of a coalition of 36 countries in Iraq.
Thank you to everyone [...]
