There’s been a whole lot in the news of late about the “Happy Hour Heard ‘Round The World.” You know the one – Sgt. Crowley, Prof. Henry Gates, President Obama, and the party-crashed Joe Biden, sitting down like some regular Joes, just having a brew. Oh, yeah, just hanging out, tossing back a few and eating some snacks. Uh huh.

In honor of that (in)auspicious occasion, I would like to share this happy little tune with you, one I am sure you will be singing the rest of the day (H/T to NQ writer Ani for this), to celebrate a different kind of Happy Hour:

Now, don’t you just feel better about everything that as been going on for the past 7 months? Make that 17 months? I knew it would. Go have a drink of Kool Aide, and I am sure you WILL feel better in no time!

By the way, Sgt Crowley avoided the rays of Hope and Change emanating from President Obama. He said that they “agreed to disagree.” Hmmm – I wonder if he has some kind of antidote to the Kool Aide? Now THAT would be a study on which I would be willing to have my tax dollars spent, wouldn’t you??

Consider this an Open Thread. Have at it!

While the equity markets retracted somewhat this week, bonds, commodities, and currencies remain well within recent ranges. Away from the markets, the Obama administration proposed a widespread revamping of financial regulations. I look forward to navigating these topics.

The most important topic of all remains the health of our economy. I am extremely pleased to have as my guest an individual who is uniquely well positioned to comment on our economy from a wide perspective. Rob Tortorella is the President and Founder of Corrosion Products and Equipment in Rochester, NY. Rob founded his industrial engineering and supplies company in the late 1980s and has grown it organically and via acquisition into a multi-million dollar enterprise. Corrosion operates throughout the Northeast and also has significant Caribbean based operations. I am not embellishing in stating that Rob and Corrosion truly define the American dream!!

Rob’s business and personal relationships marvel at his vision, integrity, and unbridled enthusiasm. Please join me for my interview with Rob Tortorella, an individual filled with unparalleled perspective and inspiration. I am honored to have him join me this Sunday evening.

These are truly historic times in the global economy. Let’s “navigate the economic landscape” without the pandering or nonsense found elsewhere! What is on your mind? What would you like to address? Please share your questions and thoughts by calling in to (347) 677-0792, and also join our live chat room, which I’ll start up about 10 minutes before the show begins. Many thanks to Larry Johnson and the rest of the team at NoQuarter for providing such a vibrant vehicle as NoQuarter Radio. I look forward to having you join me tonight as we collectively navigate the economic landscape!!

I believe we are now entering the next stage of the Brave New World of the Uncle Sam Economy. As we navigate the trails in this leg of our journey, our primary focus will be on interest rates. We experienced a dramatic spike in global rates over the course of the last few weeks. What do these spikes mean? Will they persist? Do we need to “lighten the weight of our packs” to successfully traverse these hills and valleys? Do the moves in rates indicate that “inflation” is just around the bend?

Listen to NQR’s Sense on Cents with Larry Doyle tonight from 8-9PM as I address all of these angles. Additionally, I am thrilled to have Luke Fry of 12th Street Capital join me to address these topics and developments in and around the world of mortgage-backed securities. Luke is a senior salesman at 12th Street Capital, a leading broker-dealer with untold expertise in the mortgage business. Prior to 12th Street, Mr. Fry was a Managing Director at Knight Libertas, LLC where he was responsible for providing market insight and analysis in mortgage and asset-backed structured products to a wide range of clients that included hedge funds, money managers, insurance companies and banks. Mr. Fry was hired as the first salesperson on the ABS/MBS desk at Libertas Partners and helped expand the group to over 12 salespeople while seeing the company through a merger in July 2008 with Knight Capital Group, the largest U.S. equity market maker.

Mr. Fry began his career in New York City on the buy-side with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., which at the time managed over $90 billion in assets, and became Associate Portfolio Manager in their Fixed Income Department. His responsibilities included the daily trading of treasury and corporate securities as well as maintaining portfolio duration and allocation targets for institutional clients and mutual funds. Mr. Fry left Sanford C. Bernstein in 2000 to begin his sell side experience with Banc of America Securities. At Banc of America Securities, he provided institutional investors coverage in structured and rates markets products, including CDOs, interest rate swaps and ABS/MBS. Mr. Fry played a key role in expanding the Financial Institutions Group at Banc of America Securities before moving to the Los Angeles area in 2006 to join WaMu Capital Corp as a Director.

UPDATE: She lost to a 10-member dance team. Videos are here.

There’s no politics in this post! Although, from all the news stories, you’d think this was a bigger story than North Korea! Even South Park is in on the frenzy of worldwide publicity over Susan Boyle, a competitor on “Britain’s Got Talent,” and the televised final tonight in Great Britain (which means, I hope, that if we stay up tonight and check the news regularly, we’ll find out who won):

PatRacimora sent this video to our writers’ list the other day:

The video embedding is disabled, so go here to watch Susan Boyle in the semi-finals.

She blew the second note at the beginning and had a slight problem with rhythm throughout, but I think that that was entirely due to the enormous pressure on her.

If you’re REALLY hooked on Boyle, go to the home page for “Britain’s Got Talent” and check out all the competition and several more videos.

The developments in the markets, economy, global finance, Wall Street, and Washington are occurring at breakneck speed. I will try to slow things down a bit and provide a sense of perspective. What did we learn in the markets over the last week and what does that mean for the weeks and months ahead? We will address a wide range of issues, including economic statistics released this week, the automotive situation, market performance, and the road ahead. Additionally, I am always happy to address anything on your mind as you navigate your own economic landscape.

I will be joined by a special guest this week, as well. John Busacca has been involved in the regulatory and compliance side of the financial industry since the mid 1990s. John has worked as a compliance officer for large wirehouses and NYSE member Clearing Firms. In 2000 he was involved in founding a fixed income firm in Florida. From there he transitioned into a sales role which led him to becoming President of a clearing firm. He grew that firm from a handful of correspondents to over 75.

In 2006 John was elected to the NASD-Business Conduct Committee for District 7 and was also elected to the Florida Securities Dealers Board of Governors. John was involved in the founding of The Securities Industry Professional Association in 2007. The SIPA is an industry advocacy organization. He acquired BDexchange in 2008 and has relationships with nearly every clearing firm and Securities Consultant in the Country. John is an accomplished writer and contributes to many national publications. I look forward to my conversation with him tonight.

Here’s one for the feminists. It’s another tongue-in-cheek song from my musical $ucce$$! (now seeking a Broadway home). The song is sung by an Irish-Latino character named Juanita Fitzgerald. The lyrics are as follows:

JUANITA:
Don’t trust a man or you’ll be sorry
Men just cause worry

CHORUS:
They’ll make a fool of you

JUANITA:
They only bring anxiety
Just take it from me!

CHORUS:
Men will just leave you blue

JUANITA:
Don’t trust a man
He’ll only hurt you
He’ll only make a fool of you
He’ll take what he can
And then desert you
That’s men for you
They’ll leave you blue
There’s nothing much a girl can do

CHORUS:
He will hurt you
Then desert you

JUANITA:
All men are swine as you’ll discover
You won’t recover

CHORUS:
They’re evil through and through

JUANITA:
They’ll promise you the earth and sky
Then leave you to cry

CHORUS:
That’s what a man will do

JUANITA:
You always hope there’s one exception
One who will make your dreams come true
But all you get is lies, deception
That’s men for you; I know it’s true
All men are rotten through and through

CHORUS:
Love is just a misconception

JUANITA:
Men have a single function, namely
They just exist to plug the gap
Most of them do it rather lamely

CHORUS:
Let’s wipe ‘em off the map!

JUANITA:
I think it’s clear that we don’t need ‘em
So we won’t breed ‘em

CHORUS:
Then there’ll be none at large

JUANITA:
We just won’t bear their progeny
That’s how it will be

CHORUS:
Then women can take charge

JUANITA:
We don’t need them as pollinators
Test tubes will do their work instead
Then they’ll have no chance to frustrate us
They’ve had their day; that’s what I say
I can’t see any other way

CHORUS:
We don’t need ‘em
We won’t breed ‘em

JUANITA:
A man was born to cause us sorrow
Sure as tomorrow

CHORUS:
That’s all a man is for

JUANITA:
All those I’ve known turned out to be
A burden to me

CHORUS:
Let’s show ‘em all the door

JUANITA:
A man will always try to use you
Then he’ll abuse you

CHORUS:
We just can’t take no more

JUANITA:
I think that we can do without it
No doubt about it
We’ll have no more

CHORUS:
Give ‘em what for
We’ll show ‘em all the door
Clear the floor
Clear them out
Till there’s no more

JUANITA:
We’ll have no more

CHORUS:
When there are none at large
We’ll take charge
When they’re gone
We’ll carry on

JUANITA:
We’ll soldier on

ALL:
And then we’ll all be free
Free to be anything we want to be

We are fortunate to have as one of our loyal readers Kathleen Wynne, founder of Hand Count Paper Ballots Now (HCPBnow.org), and formerly Associate Director of Black Box Voting. I will let her introduce herself and the issue further below, but MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Beginning Wednesday, May 6th, at 9:00 pm at No Quarter, for the NEXT THREE WEEKS (May 6th, May 13th, and May 20th), we will be showing the documentary, “Hacking Democracy,” in three parts, with live chat with SusanUnPC, me, and Kathleen. Below is an introduction to Kathleen Wynne, and the issues the movie addresses:

My name is Kathleen Wynne. I am the former Associate Director of Black Box Voting.org and Founder of HCPB(Hand Count Paper Ballots)now.org. I cannot express how grateful I am to NQ and to Rev. Amy for graciously agreeing to host a live chat concerning the Emmy nominated HBO documentary film, “Hacking Democracy”. The film features the work done by Bev Harris and me, during our “in-the-field” investigations into the election issue.

Black Box Voting was the first election reform organization to be able to test a fully functioning optical scan voting machine in Leon County, Florida. None of the computer security scientists entrusted to oversee the security of these machines were ever allowed to observe a fully functioning unit while it was being tested for use, which made it impossible for them to determine whether the machine was secure or even functioning the way it was supposed to! The reason was, and still is, because the vendors who manufacture these machines are protected by “proprietary secret laws.” It finally took two determined, middle-aged women to be given the opportunity to test a fully functioning voting system!! What we discovered will shock and disturb you.

After viewing the film, I believe you will agree with me that the PUMA movement and the election reform movement have a great deal in common. I joined the PUMA movement because it was what I considered to be “a great awakening” of American citizens that something was terribly wrong with our elections process. Much in the same way the election reform movement was started. It is because of this common belief that I hope that we can unite our two movements and work together in taking back our elections. For it is only by taking back our elections that we will be able to take back our country. Indeed, the only power citizens have to make such a change possible is through the ballot box and we have literally given that power away. Our elections have been privatized and are becoming more centralized, which totally undermines the principle of transparency and the public nature of elections. The United States Congress has sanctioned this privatization, which in my mind, is a huge conflict of interest. Our elections are now virtually owned and operated by corporations, overseen by “experts,” and strictly managed by election officials. Citizens have been driven from the last refuge we have to remain a government by, for and of the people – our elections.

After over 6 years of investigating the many and varied problems plaguing our elections, I am convinced now, more than ever, that the only way “we, the people” will be able to take back our elections is to junk the machines and return to hand counted paper ballots. This is the primary reason I founded the website “HCPBnow.org” in order to garner a “critical mass” of citizen support for the return to hand counts. I am dedicated to this cause. As Dr. Richard Hayes Phillips wrote in his book “Witness to a Crime: A Citizens’ Audit of an American Election”, which focused on the 2004 Presidential Election in Ohio – “paper ballots are the solution, not the problem – but only if counted by hand, at the polling place, in full public view, on election night, no matter how long it takes.”

It is my contention that if we fail in this great cause, we will no longer live in a democracy, but will exist under tyranny. It should also be noted that recently the German Supreme Court banned voting machines as unconstitutional and will be counting the votes by hand in their upcoming elections in June and September! The irony cannot be lost that it was former Nazi Germany who was first in taking steps to preserve election transparency and integrity, instead of America!

Come join us May 6th, May 13th, and May 20th at 9:00 for “Hacking Democracy” and Live Chat!

I am happy to report that ALL of our puppies have found new homes! On Friday, Leila (the brindle one) went to a post mistress in a nearby town; on Saturday, a family with several children (including teenagers who LOVE dogs) picked up Lucky (the woman said, as she was putting Lucky in the back of the car, “Now I have a new baby! I can’t wait to go buy him some things!” Translation: he will be spoiled.).

On Sunday, as I was grooming my horse, some folks came by to pick something up. I had Lani with me, and the woman was like, “Well, she’s awfully cute!” The man: “We don’t need another dog. We got two dogs. One’s a hundred pound German Shepherd. He could hurt her, just playing, of course, but still.” The woman: “He doesn’t hurt the other dog, and besides, we have a kennel to keep them separated if we need to.” Man: “Grumble.” Woman: “Well, what do you think?” Man: “(Sigh) Whatever you want.” Me: “If she doesn’t get along with y’all’s dogs, I’d gladly take her back.” Man to woman: “Well, whatever you wanna do.” Lani: Licking the man’s arm and face as he holds her, not squirming one tiny bit like she usually does, on which I commented.” Man: “I got a way with animals…” Man looking like a boy with a new puppy…So, she is going to go live on a horse farm, with lots of room to run and play.

Jordan, by the way, turns out to be about 4 yrs OLDER than we thought he was! Witness Protection and all that, but ironically, I had just said to him, “Jordan, you look GOOD! Are you SURE you’re 22???” No wonder he said no! Ahem.

So, thank you all for your support, for your queries about the pups, and for wanting to see photos/videos of them. They are all living with nice families who will take good care of them.

Here, then, is the last one we took of the three of them romping around:

I’ll get back to the serious stuff again soon, but after the VERY informative Live Chat on Torture Sunday night at No Quarter, PUPPIES are a good thing to see…

As much work as it was to have them all here, and as expensive as it was (and as it ever), that all pales in comparison to the joy, delight, and love they brought us. We will forever be thankful for the opportunity that presented itself in the form of a stray dog who needed a home…

The Warrior e-mailed me, and revealed tonight’s plans …

Tonight on the Nocturnal Warrior Show it’s all about laughs. And not just the always hysterically funny Obama administration. The Warrior and Puma Pam will touch on Chrysler, Souter, Specter and Mexican Flu…But then after that it really gets funny and serious.

We’ll examine the state of comedy and political correctness. Is Jay Leno sexist or just a bad comic? There will even be a tribute to the late Dom Deluise who left us today that is likely to enflame some gay activists and we will play some Don Rickles that will probably piss of everybody. But the question is, were we better off when were allowed to laugh at ourselves and everyone else, or are we better off today, when every comedian has to be careful of being labelled, sexist, racist, homophobic etc.

Join the Nocturnal Warrior, Puma Pam and Jay for the discussion. You can join us in the chat room and voice your opinion on air by calling (347) 677-0792. That’s tonight at 9:00 PM EDT on No Quarter Radio.

A former parishioner sent this to me tonight. Now, I know this is a serious issue, and we must take care. But sometimes when things are the most frightening, a little humor goes a long way.

That being said, allow me to share this Swine Flu Tip with you.

DON’T DO THIS:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ohjlmIeE2rI/SfkPuEK6X-I/AAAAAAAAAc8/QpVCaQll8GA/s400/swine+flu+tip.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330308918037602274" />

So, it’s an open thread. What’s going on in your world?

To ruin such a beautiful day, which is what we are having here in the Lowcountry, with a post on something serious. Sure, there are lots of contenders (aren’t there always?), but since I’m easing back into writing after my most excellent adventure, I am going to claim a Scarlett O’Hara moment. You know, “tomorrow is another day” kind of thing. I hope you don’t mind.

And since so many of you have been kind enough to ask, I now present to you a video compilation of the most adorable puppies in the world (in my humble opinion, of course):

As a reminder, these three charming puppies are still looking for good homes!

If you have anything on your mind you wish to share, like how in the hell the Yankees could have given up the game to the Red Sox on Saturday (my birthday no less), not to mention Friday night (Mariano Rivera seems to cave when he steps into Fenway Park), or if you want to lament the sad, unfortunate deaths of the 21 Argentinian polo ponies as a result of erroneous supplement amount, or have anything else on your mind, feel free to share!
