Electronic voting machines–both Optical Scan Systems that interpret paper ballots and Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) Systems– now record more than 80% of the votes cast in US elections.

But the integrity and security of these machines have increasingly been called into question. Computer scientists at Stanford, Johns Hopkins, University of California at Berkeley and Princeton– have independently “hacked” these systems—Even as independent testing and investigation has been stymied because the three major suppliers of these machines (Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia) consider access to their machines and its source code proprietary information and refuse to allow state and county election officials (who own the machines) to inspect them.

Does it make a difference? Consider that in Florida in 2000, county election officials discovered 18,412 “negative” votes for Al Gore—when the system’s memory card (theoretically) contains no software that would allow it to pre-record votes.

Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies, received his BA from Yale in 1970, and his D.Phil. from Oxford in 1974.  He is editor  of the Journal of Palestine Studies, and was President of the Middle  East Studies Association, and an advisor to the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations from  October 1991 until June 1993. He is author of Sowing Crisis: American  Dominance and the Cold War in the Middle East (2009); The Iron Cage:  The Story of the Palestinian Struggle for Statehood (2006); Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America’s Perilous Path in  the Middle East (2004); Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness (1996); Under Siege: PLO Decision-Making  During the 1982 War (1986); and British Policy Towards Syria and Palestine, 1906-1914 (1980), and was the co-editor of Palestine and  the Gulf (1982) and The Origins of Arab Nationalism (1991).

Executive Director

Mr. Lakenbach brings expertise in the Middle East, conflict resolution, bridge-buildiBiosng and government relations. He has worked with a number of organizations active in Israeli-Palestinian conflict resolution, serving as Washington, D.C. representative for Jerusalem Peacemakers, an interfaith alliance of community and religious leaders in the Holy Land. He has also served as the Communications Coordinator for the Center for Religious Tolerance, a US-based NGO that is active in projects both in the Middle East and in the United States.

Mr. Lakenbach worked in the office of Senator Joseph Lieberman, and was the Managing Editor for a Middle East newsletter at a prominent public affairs organization active in Middle East issues. His academic background includes a Master’s Degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University’s School of International Service in Washington, D.C. His thesis, which passed with distinction, explored in depth the missing components of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Mr. Lakenbach earned his undergraduate degree, in Political Science and Economics, from Washington University in St. Louis.

After graduation, he worked at the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in the communications department.
Mr. Lakenbach has been described as one of the most important up-and-coming leaders in the field of international conflict resolution.

Chairman of the Board

A senior legislative assistant in the US Congress, Mr. Segal is recognized as one of the most successful and committed organizers on Capitol Hill. Mr. Segal covers Social Security, veterans affairs, housing, HIV/AIDS in Africa and poverty issues.

He founded the Free China Movement of over thirty groups working inside and outside of China for peace and democracy.

He has also played a central role in the founding of several other progressive causes including the universal healthcare movement and increased funding to treat HIV/AIDS in Africa.

There will even be a tribute to the late Dom Deluise who left us today that is likely to enflame some gay activists and we will play some Don Rickles that will probably piss of everybody. But the question is, were we better off when were allowed to laugh at ourselves and everyone else, or are we better off today, when every comedian has to be careful of being labelled, sexist, racist, homophobic etc.
