Well, it had to happen. Another large group of people went for Hillary and now they get to join the “bitter, uneducated [and largely old] white” people clinging to guns and religion.

Can you guess who our newest racists are? Surprise, surprise! It’s Puerto Rico!!!!! Congratulations, Puerto Rico. Now, you’ll notice that no one actually says “Puerto Rico is racist.” But, hey, let’s just review what’s been said, shall we?

The CNN [Puerto Rico] exit poll results are now in and it appears that the ugly racial fissures which have so dogged the Democratic Party in recent primary contests are set to continue. Matching the previous high (in Mississippi), 31 percent of voters said race was a factor in their vote. Of those, 63 percent voted for Clinton and 37 percent for Obama.

How do we explain the prominence of race in the Puerto Rico primary? According to scholars, many Puerto Ricans deny their cultural heritage and physical characteristics and buy into an ideology of “whitening” through intermarriage with light skinned groups. As I pointed out in a recent article on this site, 81 per cent of Puerto Ricans called themselves “white” on the 2000 U.S. census.

All of which is not to say that the Puerto Rico result was a foregone conclusion. Perhaps, if the island had voted in February and not in June then the outcome would have been different. What I suspect happened was that the media, by hyping the recent Jeremiah Wright story, turned voters against Obama and brought some latent racism to the surface. In a sense it’s not so different from what occurred during the West Virginia primary when the media and the Clinton campaign exploited the Wright controversy to win over white voters.

The Clinton camp now seems intent on exacerbating Latino-Black tensions yet further by arguing that Obama has a Latino problem.

Apparently, Puerto Ricans are not only in denial about their own racial make-up but are racists to boot. And they showed their racist colors just like West Virginia did. Oh, you say you’re NOT racist? So sorry, once you’re labeled, that’s it and personal preference, actual visits from the candidates and any other lame excuse you see fit to give just won’t cut it.

Welcome to the club, Puerto Rico. We’ve got your guns, religion and free cups of bitterness right here!

COMMENTS are now closed. Go to Thread 2 to continue this discussion.

CNN reports that Hillary swept Puerto Rico in a win that contradicts previous voting patterns in this primary:

Clinton won 70 percent of the male vote, 65 percent of voters under 30, 70 percent of voters who attended college, and 66 percent of voters with an income of over $50,000. Clinton also performed strongly among those demographic groups that have long constituted the backbone of her base. She won 70 percent of female voters, 77 percent of those over 65, 69 percent who did not attend college, and 71 percent of voters with an income of $15,000 or less.

Nevertheless, here’s how the NYT reports Hillary’s win in Puerto Rico:

Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, Terry McAuliffe, called the island’s primary “another convincing win for Hillary” on CNN, and Mr. Obama conceded the race to her in a speech in Mitchell, S.D. “She is going to be a big asset going into November” in efforts to defeat the Republicans, Mr. Obama said.

A big asset? Only an unscrupulous sexist ass would say such a thing, and we now know beyond all doubt that Barack Obama sets the gold standard in sexism.

Obama appears to be under the impression that he can appropriate Hillary’s victories and more importantly, Hillary’s supporters. Can I say it any more clearly: I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA. Obama not only doesn’t represent me, he exemplifies all that I find despicable in politicians. What we’ve learned about Obama since this primary season began is that he is the complete opposite of who he claims to be.As Deb Cupples points out, the RBC assigning half votes to Florida delegates was business as usual with Obama: a two-faced hypocrite stealing votes from Hillary. How do you think Obama’s come this far? We all know that the majority of his “votes’ came from caucusing and we know how the caucuses worked. Working people, those with young kids, and the elderly among others, couldn’t get to the caucuses, and the reports of Obama’s thugs threatening, destroying, forging, and corrupting the caucus process are manifold. Has the DNC done anything to check out these reports? Not to my knowledge. The question that I’m asking myself now: does the DNC represent me? Why did they give Obama four of Hillary’s Michigan delegates? Anglachel posted a theory about this:

Taking away delegates from Hillary and handing them to Obama, however, is not within their purview, and this will come back to bite them in the ass. First, as I said above, it indicates that the internal count of the Obama delegates is weaker than they claim. Four delegates should not make that big a difference, yet they obviously do even with the count reduced by the 50% rule. There is no other rational reason to force this misallocation for such a small number of delegates, given the blowback that will occur.

What’s this blowback going to look like? According to the NYT, Hillary and her supporters need to fall in line behind Obama:

In order for us to be successful in November, the runner-up is going to have to go all out in support of the nominee,” said Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “The runner-up is going to have to be there from Day One. The support is going to have to be more than just lip service.

However, I strongly agree with Harp, a commenter on NQ, who writes:

I have been a Democrat longer than Hillary and if she endorses BO she will lose my respect and my vote. This is not about Obama anymore. This is about the pillaging of the party. The DNC are corrupt and MUST be purged. No other outcome is acceptable.

ADELANTE HILLARY !!!! TU ERES NUESTRA PRESIDENTA.

It’s hard to post when your bloggy compatriots are doing such an able job of covering and analyzing the salient points of what’s amounting to be a debacle, but after last night I thought it was time to emerge from my bunker and have at it.

What we’re looking at here is one of the most blatantly dishonest, rigged elections seen in any country in recent years, including (fill in the name of a banana republic here). You thought Lyndon Johnson’s ballot box 13 episode stunk? Or that the Florida recount was a travesty? Well pull up a chair, folks, and get a good look at Election 2008.

This is not the ranting of a bitter, gun-clutching, God-lovin’ Obama hater. This is fact.

Florida and Michigan are still unaccounted for. Repeat: There is still no solution to the Florida and Michigan mess. Oh sure, Howard Dean promises to “do” something, but all that we’ve seen is that in this case inaction IS action; keeping Florida and Michigan out of the calculus is achieving the goald that so many in the party and press long for.

And yet, and yet. Despite features with adorable, fair and balanced titles like “Hillary Deathwatch”, the senator CONTINUES to blow Obama out of the water in key states. And no, she’s not Reanimator. She’s what we in the biz call “a candidate” participating in a thing called a “campaign”, where you don’t throw in the towel until all the goddamned votes are counted and there’s a clear winner. And what a nudnick her husband is! Only an insufferable blowhard would say the following about the Florida and Michigan mess:

“The Democrats said, ‘We’re going to decapitate them, smudge them, step on them, act like they never existed, act like they never voted,’” the former president said. “It’s very strange that the Democrats would be more authoritarian and more hostile to the voters.”

Good God! Who does this man think he is?? But then again, according to the Obamatrons, he’s just a racist anyway so whatever he says is driven by his twisted, KKK-mindset.

Just think about what happened after Florida 2000. Michael Moore became a gajillionaire. The Democrats becamed the wronged party, the party that stands for one-person-one-vote. Now Michael Moore is uncharacteristically silent on the subject of enfranchisement and Democratic leaders are shrugging their shoulders or, in the case of Donna Brazile, sending out unhinged e-mails to critics. We’ve come a long way, baby.

And for those of you who are bitchslapping Larry for speaking the truth, well, screw you. If he was a standup guy for, well, standing up for Valerie Plame and calling bullshit on Iraq, well then maybe, just maybe, you oughta give him the benefit of the doubt on this politics thing. They taught him a lot of cool stuff at the Farm besides how to stalk and kill people (not that I would know first hand that this is what they teach at that place, but I saw The Recruit).

Meanwhile, the DNC plans to <del datetime="2008-05-21T17:40:23+00:00">empty the clown car</del> hold a meeting of the rules committee on May 31 to decide…something. Maybe when to meet next. Or what sort of snacks should be provided in the VIP skyboxes in Denver.

And what, may I ask, will they decide that couldn’t have been arrived at weeks, if not months, ago? And what exactly constitutes a “fair solution” to this problem? A do-over? How about handing all the delegates over to Obama outright, and canceling the upcoming matches in Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota and calling it a day? Or how about turning over all of Hillary’s delegates won in contests that “aren’t important”, like races in hillbilly states?

Nothing would surprise me at this point. Except, of course, for a fair, equitable solution where voters are enfranchised and the delegates are apportioned fairly and small-d democratically. But the fix is in. Don’t hold your breath.

She will win the West Virginia, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico primaries.

But the screwed-up, patchwork system the Democrats are using to choose delegates has given small states, which are unlikely to be in the Democratic column come November, inordinate influence.

At the same time, the big states that will play an instrumental role in the November general election–New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Texas, and California–are being treated like they are Iowa and Idaho.

It will boil down to the decision of the super delegates.

I am a pessimist. Even though Hillary is the one who wins the big states that will count in the fall, the “supers” appear to be moving toward Obama. Even though Hillary has more popular votes and polls much better among the Reagan democrats, the supers appear to be moving toward Obama.

Hillary’s only hope is that the super delegates will come to their senses and realize that Barack Obama’s relationships with the corrupt Tony Rezko, the racist-wife stealing Jeremiah Wright, and the unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers will provide the Republicans with ammunition they have never had at hand to use against the Democrats’ candidate. This is particularly true of that flag stomper, Bill Ayers.

Think not? Just read what the execrable Bob Novak wrote today:

The test of Obama’s strategy may be his friendship with and support from William Ayers, an unrepentant member of the Weathermen terrorist underground of the 1960s and ’70s. Instead of totally disavowing Ayers as he belatedly did his former pastor, Obama potentially deepened his problem by referring to Ayers as just a college professor — “a guy who lives in my neighborhood.” He then compared their relationship to his friendship with conservative Republican Sen. Tom Coburn, just as he compared Wright’s racism to his white grandmother’s.

Democrats abhor bringing up what Obama calls Ayers’s “detestable acts 40 years ago,” but they will be brought into the public arena even if that is not McCain’s style of politics. A photo of Ayers stomping on the American flag in 2001 has been all over the Internet this week. That was the year Obama accepted a $200 political contribution from Ayers and the year in which the former Weatherman said: “I don’t regret setting bombs; I feel we didn’t do enough.”

While McCain will not demand a response from Obama, others will. How the prospective nominee handles this will help define whether he is seen as flawed or fantastic in the long campaign ahead.

We may now understand why Barack does not wear a flag lapel pin. He’s afraid that Bill Ayers will stomp on him. In reality, it will be the relationship with Bill Ayers that will empower the Republicans to destroy the candidacy of Barack Obama.

This is not a question of whether or not the Republicans will use this material. They will. So what is there to find? That is the area of greatest danger for the Democrats. Obama has lied about his longstanding relationship with Bill Ayers.

Why? What is he hiding? As I have pointed out before, 1995 was a critical year in the Obama/Ayers relationship. It was in 1995 that Barack was tabbed by Ayers to be the Chairman of the Annenberg Challenge (a failed $50 million project). That same year, Barack sat at a kitchen table with Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, Bill’s wife, a plotted the ouster of Alice Palmer, who Obama took down in order to secure his place in the Illinois state senate.

If the Super Delegates do not insist on a full and complete disclosure from Barack Obama about his ties to Bill Ayers, the Republicans will force the issue in the fall. It is one thing to have a name that sounds like the terrorist who attacked us on 9-11. But it is an entirely different matter to be close friends with an unrepentant terrorist who bombed U.S. Government buildings.

There is no where to run. The relationship is genuine. This is a stonewall that will not stand.
